Coronavirus in NYC: Takeaways from California’s Restaurant Reopening Plan | Eater NY

"At TAK Room, I’ve noticed the recent boom in tableside food preparation that has defined many throwback fine-dining rooms; California’s reopening guidelines recommend discontinuing tableside food preparation, which would put an end to tableside Caesars and other theatrical service, and the guidelines even singled out the ritual of tableside guacamole as something to be stopped." - Ryan Sutton

Google
Such a cool venue, I loved this place! There were lots of TVs with sports on, we were watching Indian wells matches. The service was wonderful. There was live music outside. The food was pretty good, I got a salad with shrimp and my partner had a burger. Only reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is cause the salad was a bit oily (should have asked for dressing on the side) and the burger came too raw.... And then too overcooked. Overall would totally go again!

Google
Long Island Ice Tea. Horrible! Tasted like water sent it back for another one took a couple of sips and left it on the table. The food was just as bad, I order the steak sandwich with onion rings. The sandwich tasted like burnt steak umms and the onion rings tasted like they just came out of the freezer. Disappointed!

Google
Great place and cool location on the Empire Polo Grounds, also home of the Coachella and Stagecoach concerts! The vibe in the area is almost magical. Very green grass everywhere!

Shirle T.

Google
Caesar salad with shrimp very tasty. Pulled pork with onion Wings very good. Server was very attentive but A little too open with her reviews on religion and politics. Atmosphere is great!

debra J.

Google
Cobb tower was delicious! Other items on menu were typical bar food items. It was great for lunch. Lots of outdoor seating with multiple fire pits. It also looked like they had a stage area so maybe they have local entertainment. Service was ok, they brought our food but no utensils. Onion rings and French fries arrived cold. Drinks presentation was nice. Tack Room was a bit of a drive and will only return if I happen to be at the polo grounds.

Google
Cool spot! Didn’t have a reservation but also didn’t wait terribly long on a Friday night. We sat inside but outside would have been cool too as they have an outside patio with heaters and live music. Inside is just as cool and cozy with a ton of tv for sports. Food and service were great. Can’t remember the waitress’s name but she was friendly and prompt with her service. White Pizza is great. Wings are great. They have high chairs. Would eat here again!

Google
A secluded place on the grounds of the Empire Polo Club, home of Coachella and Stagecoach, this place is a gem. Eclectic decor complete with saddles as bar stools, the staff is friendly, the drinks are generous and the food is fresh and perfectly prepared pub grub with some classic items. Burgers are big, shrimp cocktails are great and the menu is pretty diverse for a dive bar. Stop by if you're in the area, you won't regret it.

Google
This place is AMAZING! The ambiance for both indoor and outdoor seating is lovely. There is so much room outside and many booths inside with the bar and cool interior designs. The food is fairly priced and tastes magnificent. Service is always attentive and restrooms are conveniently located a 30-second walk away from wherever you’re sitting. It’s close to the polo fields but never have I smelled manure. Typically when I go, I order the baby back half rack of ribs with mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese as the sides + the polo potato wedges. This usually comes out to ~$50 and feeds myself + 2 others. Seriously this place is a must-visit and has incredible food for a fair price!

Phil Paasch ..

Yelp
Good food at a reasonable price with inside and outside dinning. Have taken people there just to sit in the saddles at their bar.

Yelp
You need to update your site. Drove all the way there to find out you were closed. It says you're open on this site.

Yelp
Food and service are ok. I had a steak sandwich, which was good but a buck or two more than it should be. Hubby had a pastrami sandwich and it was really good. The problem there is a beautiful patio loaded with flies. Probably to be expected with polo fields and horse poop close by. But next time I go to Tack Room, I'm eating inside, no matter how beautiful the day is.

Yelp
Why is this place so relaxing to me? Sundays in the winter it is a lot of fun. YELP SHORT ANSWER: yes, even if you don't get the horse world or polo, this is a family fun location especially if there is a match happening. LOCATION: Located behind the gates of the Eldorado Polo Club off of Monroe Ave 51. Lots of parking. These are huge Polo grounds, really huge I say! FACILITY: Nothing is new, this has been here a while and it is all really nice but not modern or fancy. To me seems perfect for what it is. Excellent outdoor seating and kind of a dark indoor seating area with a lot of patina and history in there. MENU: Large, lots of choices you'll find something for sure. FOOD PREP: Well done. FOOD QUALITY: Excellent, everything we've enjoyed here has been great. WAITSTAFF: Very nice, not really sure who is who but it all works. OVERALL VALUE: Good value, pretty sure you'll be happy and full when you leave the Tack Room Tavern. TIP: Don't pass on this one.

Yelp
I am posting a grade of "4" to not mess up their current average score of "4". My friends and I visit the Coachella Valley regularly. The Tack Room is one of the places that we visit when we are in town. This past weekend, we were surprised to find the gates closed. There was signage saying that the Tack Room was "temporarily closed". In over twenty consecutive years, we've never encountered this. I know that business is very slow during the late summer. I think it would have been more comforting if they posted "closed for the season". (If in fact this is what is going on. I mean, it is not unusual to see a business close "temporarily" never to reopen.)

Yelp
SO sad to post this but this place is not what it used to be. We had chicken lettuce cups which were overdressed and so small that it wasn't enough for one person. The chicken sandwich (breast) was so small the chicken didn't even show outside the bun and was extremely thin, tough and boring. Onion rings served with no dipping sauce. All for $45. Service was good despite the bad foodWon't be back.

Yelp
Tack Room Tavern , what a disaster of food they serve . I order a margarita pizza which was still raw when served . The Tomatoes were raw and the dough was raw not cooked completely. Don't waste your time or your good money . Never going back not the tack room it use to be .

Yelp
What a wonderful experience! Look no further to find a dog friendly restaurant in Indio with great service, ambiance and food. Looking to eat light, we had a chicken salad and lettuce wraps. But, the burgers and pizzas looked amazing. Next time! Our waiter, Daniel, was very friendly, offering water and a snack to our dog. He also surprised us with a delicious lemon dessert. So much for eating light. We demolished it! Daniel recommended checking out the El Dorado Polo Club's Cantina which was also a cool experience. Highly recommend both and asking for Daniel as your server.

Yelp
Love this place. The outdoor atmosphere is great, but they only had 2 servers for the outside patio which made service slow as molasses... That being said, they really tried make our experience a great one. I wish they would bring back the mini corndogs. Will absolutely come back again!

Yelp
Had my birthday dinner there had a horrible experience. Decided to give it another chance because the property is beautiful this time for my husband's birthday experience the same treatment. Horrible

Yelp
Went here for lunch. We were quickly seated. Service was good. My friend and I both had the Del Toro Chicken Salad. It was average. We were in and out in a good amount of time l, which worked since we had limited time. 3 stars are for the food and atmosphere being average. Not a reflection of the service. On another note: The restaurant wasn't really well marked. We actually drove past it before finding it.

Yelp
Tack Room Tavern has easily become one of my new favorite restaurant and bars in the desert. Located off the polo fields there is plenty of signage and it's easy to find. There was plenty of parking and neon lighting guides you into the main check in station at the restaurant. The Tack Room has a large lovely covered patio but with the cool evening weather we opted for inside seating which was also pretty cool. The inside is a dark polo country bar and there are some booths and tables. We loved that near the bar area they had seated made out of saddles, pretty cool. The bar area had a sexy cowboy masculine vibe and the outer table area was more family dining. Loved all of the polo decor throughout the restaurant. The Tack Room has an extensive menu filled with so many bomb looking options, it was hard to pick between the soups, salads, burgers and mains. I had heard rumors that their appetizers and salads / smaller bites were where it was at compared to their main dishes so we took that into account when ordering. The food was 5/5 A+ seriously amazing bites here! I didn't find a dish I didn't like. Here's what I got: Pozole Soup: 5/5 - Just like back home, super authentic delicious pozole. Flavorful red broth, hominy, onion, and all this was a great starter soup. The side of chips were also fresh and a nice paring. Cob Salad: 5/5 - One of the best salads I've ever had. I always say I'm a saucy gal and the secret to a good salad is having a lot of dressing (maybe this isn't the healthiest but we all know what makes a salad better haha). The dressing was delicious and the lettuce was fresh as were all of the toppings. I paired it with grilled chicken which made the salad extra hearty and delicious. My friend got steak in hers and it also looked super good. Trust me, get this salad you won't be disappointed. Onion Rings: 5/5 - Just a delicious beer battered onion ring. No frills but super tasty and the perfect cheat meal appetizer to split with some friends. Also the portions were generous and the side of spicy aioli ranch dip was bomb. The cocktail on the other hand was a miss, but I'll give them another shot. I ordered the watermelon Margarita (which was pricy mind you) but it was really terrible. It tasted like gasoline and like the cheapest tequila was used. I love a stiff drink, I promise I'm not a weenie but it wasn't drinkable. I should have sent it back but I'm too nice. Instead I asked for some lime juice on the side which helped a tad, I just chugged it and made a mental note to try a different cocktail next time. Lastly the service was decent for how busy they were. Probably a 4/5. Our waitress was super lovely and sweet. Kind smile and overall did her best. Again, I do think the crowds were just a bit overwhelming and demanding as she was thoughtful to check in with us as much as she could, sometimes noting the bar was backed up etc. we did have to ask for waters twice and little things like that, but again overall the service was friendly and good vibes. The food was just super stellar here that I have to come back. I also dug the atmosphere and decor. This restaurant is on the pricy side for what we're more simplistic dishes but the quality of the food was well worth it so I can tell you I will be back soon and with some friends!

Yelp
This place is a great find. Whenever I have to fly out of TRM or PSP, this is a must stop. Tonight my colleague and I sat at the bar. The motif is cool with a warm inviting feel. Our bartender was super nice and I should take the time to get her name. I went with the California Chicken Sandwich. It was downright yummy. They put it in what seems to be a cross between baguette and French bread. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked. If you think I'm going to make some adolescent joke about beautiful breasts, I'm way too mature for that. Last trip I had the Au jus (god bless you) and it was great. Their side salad is a mix of greens, tomatoes and diced cucumber. Super delish. Pilots love good chow. This place has it.

Yelp
We spent the weekend in Indio at a soccer tournament located on the Polo grounds. There really wasn't much food offered so we were pretty happy to find the Tack Room located right onsite. We didn't have reservations, but the wait wasn't bad. They have tons of out outdoor seating available and all were nicely shaded. Our server was friendly, and recommended the soup of the day which was a red pork pozole. I ordered a Manhattan, the pozole and a cobb tower. The Manhattan was nicely poured, super refreshing after a day full of sun. I enjoyed the cup of pozole. It had a decent amount of pork, was loaded with hominy and topped with cabbage and onion. They served it with a bowl of crunchy tortillas chips. The star would have to be the cobb tower. This thing was tasty! Loaded with crisp lettuce, giant chunks of blue cheese, turkey, fresh tomatoes, corn, bacon and avocado. Everything was tossed with ranch dressing and piled high into a tower. Our group also ordered a giant lettuce wrapped burger with a side salad and the french dip with crispy whisky onion rings. Everything was delicious and we all left happy and full.

Patrick I.

Yelp
I had a Cobb Stack salad. Chintzy serving, There were no blue cheese crumbles. Bacon was almost non existent. Sadly, not the cobb stack I used to love!! Music was wonderful, though.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and was not that crowded and we were able to get a seat fast, but then waited 15 minutes and no one came by to ask if wanted anything, not even water. There several staff people over by the bar just doing busy work.
google avatar

Erica Q.

Yelp
This was a Fun place! Tried it out before a concert at Spotlight 29. Fast service, good food!!

Brad J.

Yelp
Not the Tack Room we knew under prior ownership. Don't believe their website menu, happy hour info - there is no happy hour and a more limited menu available. There appears to be ample staff (most are for sure new and learning). It was very busy The wine bottle we ordered (at 5:30 PM) was sold out. We ordered a vegetarian pizza and requested added Chicken. Guess what - got no added chicken!!! The menu stated main entrees coming soon - so mostly sandwiches for now! Long ways to go to earn our business in the future. Recommend you go somewhere else for the near future, Winter!!

Yelp
Wonderful veggie burger burger wonderful chopped salad Wonderful french fries. Nice ambiance outside on a beautiful day after the Indio art festival

Yelp
Such a fun find! We were looking for some place on a road trip between Palm Springs and the high desert and found this spot. It is indeed part of a polo field (is that what it's called?), but you can't actually see the field from the dining area. They have a lovely outdoor dining area that is covered for warmer dates and very well ventilated. We just happened to be there during happy hour, so we took advantage of the happy hour specials on food. We got the chicken tenders (happy hour) and the baby back rips from the dinner menu. Chicken tenders were pretty good - you can't really mess this up. Nicely breaded. The baby back ribs were very tender and saucy. They were a bit skimpy with the sides. We got the jumbo asparagus and I think we got fewer than 5 spears... I think that overall, it's a fun and relaxing experience, albeit a bit far from the main highway.

Dan G.

Yelp
So disappointed in the new menu and recipes. We're locals and frequented here a lot over the years. Now with new management and executive chef, we most likely will not return. Service was just "ok". The ambiance was fine, but the food was just NOT good anymore. I presume that the partnership ended really bad and the partner left with the recipes and menu. The pizza was not edible. It tasted like the flour or yeast in dough was old or had turned. It was undercooked and just really bad! This place used to be our go-to spot for nice outdoor dining with good live music and even better food. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll come back under these conditions.

Tom R.

Yelp
what a disaster, close and reopen again with people that know what they are doing! PS substituting french onion soup for au jus is a terrible idea and ruined what could have been a good sandwich.

Arline T.

Yelp
Nothing like the old Tack Room. Food and service was a big disappointment. Hope it improves.

Lynn S.

Yelp
Such a nice outside environment, bright shade, sturdy tables. Love the space. The staff is lovely. Not all the bees, however, went for the open go box of garbage at the edge of the patio; several bugged us at our table, Which scared those with bee allergies. Korean lettuce wraps were delish but chicken ranch sandwich was overcooked and tough, almost too tough to chew. Onion rings were OK. Neat joint but Food is Unreliable.
google avatar

Thelma A.

Yelp
We returned to the Tackle Room Tavern after it's reopening. We ordered a veggie pizza. It was one of the worse pizzas we all have had, right up there with Domino's and Little Ceasar inferior quality. My stomach was so upset for hours afterwards. One of the servers shared that before closing the pizza dough was made in house. Now, it's purchased from some outside vendor. Our party of 4 left almost 2 entire pizzas behind. The server was surprised with the amount we had left and more so that we weren't interested in to go boxes. Lol On the up side, the Ceasar salads were terrific. They were crisp, fresh, and we'll dressed with shaved parm. We'll not be back for pizza. Instead, we'll continue getting our pizza fix from Bill's Pizza, where their DELICIOUS "gut-friedly" house-made sourdough pizza crust is made with superior quality imported flour from Italy!
google avatar

Robin M.

Yelp
What a disappointment. We've been coming here for so many years I've lost track. We attend the horse show hosted nearby every year and have always looked forward to coming here. The menu has been cut in half and the quality of the food has too. The tradition is over...

Robert V.

Yelp
I liked what I ordered. But 2 people of our party ordered the trial new item of chicken-fried steak. They said it was awful.
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Wonderful food. The service was above reproach at the bar. Wednesday karaoke with T Bone kept everything going.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday night. Another gem in Indio. Located right off the parking lot, service was great and very helpful. Had appetizers, which consisted of steak bites and ceviche. The steak was delicious, going to be a repeat. Drinks were cold and delicious. Great for a warm evening. The location had a band, which was good. Always looking for new spots, and this is one we will be back to. Also dog friendly.
google avatar

Janes B.

Yelp
The old tackroom was better even though the previous owner was not a very nice person. We went there recently, and the pizza was undercooked. The menu was terrible and the vibe was off. Something has changed. I know they have new owners now, but the people should understand how to run a business and get it together
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
Food was very disappointing and poor quality/value. Good place to have a drink but not eat!!!
google avatar

Maribel G.

Yelp
Great service, great atmosphere and great food! Love that there is live music and the venue is indoor or outdoor seating.
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
I will never be able to thank Geneva, Julie and the entire staff here for helping facilitate the greatest weekend of my life. We were originally scheduled to throw our private birthday / wedding on Saturday night, but after a change in ownership, we lost our Friday night venue. Without missing a beat, everyone at the Tack Room allowed us to have both nights there. The service was above and beyond. The food was fantastic. They could not have been more accommodating and I could not be more grateful. I hope they are able to reopen publicly soon so I can continue to support and share the good vibes.
google avatar

Pat A.

Yelp
This was my first time back since new management. The service was excellent. The Strami Sandwich was very good! Great portion sizes. Super disappointed that the bread pudding is no longer on the dessert menu.

Yelp
My dad, wife and I dined at the Tack Room after a long day of playing at Joshua Tree. Free parking can be found in the parking lot. Discover is an accepted form of payment. It was a bit confusing locating the Tack Room since it shares space with the Polo Club. They are essentially the same business with the Polo side serving pizza. There are a couple benches outside to sit on while waiting for your name to be called and seated. Indoors is simple and peppered with cool saddles and barrels. Tack Room offers a full bar with an extremely limited craft beer selection. While perusing the menu, we drank a couple 805's and La Quinta IPAs for $6 each. My wife and I shared the California Chicken Sandwich for $15 + $1 up-charge for Whiskey Rings. Our sandwich and rings were standard; it did it's job but left no impression. Meh. My dad ordered the Tack Room Cheeseburger for $14 + $1 up-charge for Whiskey Rings. When I requested the pickle spear that was forgotten with my dad's meal, our server was visibly miffed. When we were ready for another round of beers, I had to flag down our server. Overall, I am disappointed that we wasted one of our dining experiences at the Tack Room while vacationing. Food was sub-par and service was borderline rude.
google avatar

Mariah M.

Yelp
My family was excited for the reopening of the Tack Room but we were a little disappointed in the food. My mother got the pastrami sandwich and found it to be really dry. I got the bacon chicken ranch sandwich, which uses boneless thigh meat but the meat was tough and nothing to write home about. We found the appetizers to be good. We got the nachos, cheese curds, and buffalo wings. The service was a tad slow but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, our mains could have been better.
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
We had a large party of 13. Almost everyone ordered something different. Prices were just a little high; but food was tasty. The restaurant is pleasantly nice. Easy to visit because of low noise level. Parking was a little crowded; but finally found a spot near back. Our drink orders were taken immediately. It took quite a while for them to return for our food order. After food was ordered; food came at a good timely manner Not sure we will come back or not

Moe A.

Yelp
Love coming here after work as it is right next door. I love their burgers for lunch and their drinks love that they have a beautiful atmosphere around the place & can always count on great service and food. Enjoy the mountains and the green all around it as you are inside of the POLO grounds where Coachella Festival takes place every year. Always busy bcos it's just that good employees are always friendly and welcoming to new people as well as very friendly showing you their favorites. I come here after work too for a cold beer they have thee coldest beer. Let us NOT FORGET this is Western style interior you sit at the bar and your barstools are saddles instead of sitting same old lame way. Love coming here
google avatar

Deron R.

Yelp
This is a great place for late afternoon food and drinks, or just some good old-fashioned day drinking. Located at the Polo grounds, the Tack Room has all the basic appetizer, salads and sandwiches that you would expect at a bar and grill. Nice bar setup with some TVs and the bartender was excellent. He was slinging I'm really good drinks. The cobb salad was excellent,. I ordered the basic cheeseburger with the side of onion rings. We also got the artichoke dip and tortilla chip appetizer which was really good. Give them a try
google avatar

Daniel T.

Yelp
This place was amazing to get dinner! After a long day working in record rainfall this place hit the spot! The burger was awesome the onion rings were fresh! The waitress was busy but made sure she checked on us frequently! We will be back!

Joanne M.

Yelp
The food was good but definitely different than before. The menu definitely has changed. Service was excellent and we enjoyed seeing the (very well behaved) dogs hanging with their humans.

Maximus V.

Yelp
The food here was absolutely terrible, my steak (cooked medium) tasted like charcoal and it was chewier than a sandal. The service is fine, nice server, but the atmosphere is bad, inside is louder than a music festival, and don't get me started on the flies. 1 star, don't recommend.
google avatar

Lynne R.

Yelp
Food, service, home made chips, pizza and casual dining. We can't wait for you to please reopen.
google avatar

Brenda M.

Yelp
Every time I eat here it's always a pleasant time. The music and outside patio is nice. The food is ready Farley quick. They no longer have the meatballs for appetizers and I was bummed out but tried the New York steak strips and they did not disappoint.
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
I really enjoy eating here , their food is delicious.. I ate the regular hamburger. The meat was cooked just right and juicy. I took the other half home because it was big enough to satisfy me. The fries were very good too!! My daughter ate the half I took home even reheated she said it was delicious... Keep up the great cooking!!!

Jeff M.

Yelp
Great service and food. Cali burger and steak sandwich were great. Will be coming back for Pizza after 4pm.
google avatar

Joanne E.

Yelp
We came with a party of six, and each of us enjoyed our selections! I had the Tavern burger, pretty traditional, but the flavors were all so good together. The burger was cooked perfectly. The ranch for my French fries was perfect. Loved it - would love to go back and try the pizza they have as well (seems to be from the restaurant next door) and their brunch menu also sounded great! Has a great sports bar ambiance - TVs on every wall and loud but you can still talk to your friends without yelling. Service was great, but just a kind reminder to ask to split the check at the start of your ordering. Our waitress was so fabulous until we asked to split the check at the end, then she was visibly upset. Other than that, service was great. ‍

Yelp
First time to the Tack Room Tavern. A friend recommended we stop in for a bite to eat as we were running errands. The Tack Room Tavern is located at the Empire Polo Club which are the grounds where the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals take place. The restaurant offers both patio and dining room dining. The menu is your average diner offerings and the atmosphere is very casual. I loved my salad and my husband loved his tuna salad sandwich. The four and not five stars was because the service was very disorganized and slow. We had to ask for literally everything... we asked for menus... water... for our order to be taken... and once our food arrived we had to ask for utensils... then refills on our water. Half way through our dinning experience we asked the waitress if there was a problem where we were seated because we were not getting service from the staff ... her explanation was that there had been a shift change. As our meal progressed... the same lack of service continued. Look forward to returning and perhaps receiving better service so I can update this review.

Yelp
Slid in to the bar on a Friday night and enjoyed exceptional wings with some cold beer. Wings very meaty- even the flats, and cooked / sauced perfectly. Bartender service was wonderful, which made my visit a 5-Star one. Well done!
