A Vibe Check of Chinatown’s New Taco Bell Cantina | Eater DC

"On my visits to the Chinatown Taco Bell Cantina, I found a fast, city-centric spin on the usual Taco Bell menu—menus largely copy those of the roughly 8,000 Taco Bells worldwide, with the main difference here being the addition of alcoholic beverages—housed in the former home of Irish pub Fado and still sporting a grand-opening banner. The location extended hours to 7 a.m.–4 a.m. (it is not operating 24 hours), and features six digital kiosks (which only accept alcohol orders for dine-in) plus a late-night window that delivery drivers swarm until 4 a.m. I tried the most popular fluorescent-green Mountain Dew Baja Blast Freeze: the $7.50 standard version is topped with a generous five-second stream of Jose Cuervo and is cheaper and quicker than many D.C. happy-hour cocktails; the touch-ordering system suggests adding another shot for $5, but I found that unnecessary. IDs are checked by the bartender pre-pour, though there’s nothing stopping someone from walking out onto the street with a spiked drink. The scene is a mixed bag—opening night drew Nicki Minaj fans in hot-pink cowboy hats, diners overheard chatting about jury duty and lost Apple Watches, Georgetown students in sweats and nearby T-Mobile employees tap in orders, and two TVs inside air everything from The Flintstones to news mixes and Wild Card MLB games. I also experienced the National Taco Day app chaos firsthand: my $1 Chalupa Supreme froze at checkout during its hour, so I waited for the 4 p.m. $1 Doritos Locos Taco and finally scored my dollar taco." - Tierney Plumb

Taco Bell’s Boozy Cantina Joins Chinatown’s Consumerist Corridor | Eater DC

"Positioned as a brightly lit beacon for to-go beer, wine, and “twisted” tequila freezes served until 1 a.m., this Taco Bell Cantina will backfill the long-vacant space that formerly housed Fado Irish Pub at 808 7th Street NW. It’s the third local offshoot after one that landed in Old Town in 2018 and a Columbia Heights cantina; the new D.C. spot seats 21 per its liquor application and will offer takeout and delivery starting at 7 a.m. daily." - Tierney Plumb

Google
I rember the first time I read about a taco bell cantina opening in. "I have to eat there someday!" Well it took over 5 years and I never eat at Taco Bell anymore. (Mind you I used to eat at the bell several times every week for years. Even competing a 30 day "Only Bell challenge".) But I digress. Right down the block from Capital One Arena I couldn't resist. At 11PM this place is wall to wall. You have to use the tablets to order but I saw food coming up quickly. My sister in-law insisted I get the Margarita. She also ordered it with 2 extra shots in it. 2 non alcoholic slushies and the Margarita were pooped quickly. The counter worked explained what they were and which was which. Well I have to admit. It was so much worse than I expected. I mean had to laugh. Cheap cuervo blanco and slushy mountain dew. Not mixed up at all. (Note the cup on the left.) If I were 30 years younger it would have been perfect. You have to dine in, so I drank it about as fast as I could so we could get back to waking. The place is well lit and like I stated... Busy. The staff was friendly and keeping up the best they could. At least I can say... "I finally got to go to a taco bell cantina." Probably won't do it again.

Came to eat here couple days ago in the afternoon! Employees were so energetic and super nice . Felt so welcomed ! This tall middle eastern guy (he said he was the main manager) was going around asking everyone if everything was ok and made small talk with everyone in there ! 10/10 experience! We need more people like the ones that work here in fast food ! Keep up the good work guys !

Google
Taco Bell delivers cheap, craveable fast food—bold flavors, creative combos, and late-night reliability. The crunchwrap and Doritos Locos Tacos shine, but quality varies. 7/10 for guilty-pleasure eats. 🌮🔥

Meal: Lunch Day Visited: Saturday Budget: $10 Closest Station: Gallery Place Reservation Needed?: N/A Payment: Cash; Credit Kid Friendly?: Yes English Menu?: Yes Anyone that follows me knows that I have a passion for Taco Bell. This location, despite its convenient hours (open late) and the fact that they sell alcohol, falls terribly short. The dining area was disgusting during our visit. We had planned to eat in, but immediately changed our minds when seeing the state of the tables - a total mess. Service was also lacking. We won’t be back.

Google
This location is supposed to operate 24 hours; however, during the night shift it takes an excessive amount of time for staff to respond at the pickup window. The service bell appears to be broken, and the music inside is so loud that staff do not hear customers knocking. When I finally received my order, the food was not served hot, which is very disappointing. This was literally like 10 mins from me writing this .

Google
Two separate drivers canceled after the staff prematurely alerted them that the food was ready, making a 15-20 minutes delivery into a 1.5 hour delivery. It took 45 minutes for them to simply hand off my food to a delivery driver, making it the longest wait I’ve ever experienced for fast food. Cannot recommend ordering delivery from this location.

Yelp
This place is decent! Surprised at the amount of toppings we got in our tacos. We came here while the chicken nuggets were being sold as well, and they were sooo goooood! The only bad thing is we tried to order in-person using the machines at the store, and they were all barely working. We initially tried to order from two of the machines, and the screen wasn't working at all. Then we tried a different one, and we thought we were fine, but parts of the screen I assume were damaged, so we couldn't properly tap all of our orders, only from certain parts of the screen. We finally tried a fourth screen, and that one worked well, but it's crazy that basically half of the screens are not working properly or at all.

Yelp
I placed a late night order from this restaurant that was never delivered. Went by the store in person and the manager refunded my charge and provided me with my items gratis. Very friendly staff for such a busy location.

Yelp
Stopped in to try the cantina on a whim - order is via touchscreens, there are tables around one side of the store, they call your name when the orders are ready but it wasn't very quick and people had issues with their orders. the workers there were not friendly or helpful. although they have options for water on the soda machines, they will not give you a cup for water, the restroom was out of service, and the food was pretty awful even by taco bell standards. chalupa steak was tasteless and the chalupa wrap had awful texture, the nacho cheese served with the fries was 1/4 of the cup full and ran out after a few fries, the avocado salsa verde is not worth 20 cents per packet, the cheez it tostada falls apart/is difficult to eat. so many other fast/fast casual options in the area that put a little more effort into their food/experience and don't make me feel sick almost immediately after

Yelp
Terrible experience, with incredibly rude staff. Waiting 30+ minutes for an order that was just sitting there. never coming here, hope they find new faster staff with better customer service skills

Yelp
The production rate is concerningly slow, with an average wait time of 30 minutes per order. Additionally, I have observed at least 8 instances where customers who ordered a drink were unable to receive it due to a malfunctioning soda machine. This has resulted in customers paying for a product they were unable to receive.

Yelp
My mobile order had both missing and incorrect food items, so I asked the manager to fix it. Another customer overheard the manager addressing this with his staff and started aggressively harassing me for bringing up the missing items. While the manager was very kindly fixing my order, security got involved and instead of addressing the clearly intoxicated customer, he targeted me - even keeping me from my phone, which the manager had been referencing to see the original order. To be clear, my phone was on the counter next to an open taco showing that the order was incorrect and security would not allow me to pick it up. Security had no issue with the woman screaming racist insults at me the entire time.
