Review: Taco Bell’s Nacho Fries Are a $1 Disappointment | Eater

"Presented as the chain’s first nationwide fries, nacho fries were rolled out with a splashy Bowery theater launch and immediate retail availability at a New Jersey mall. The combo pairs relatively thick, fairly crisp fries—dotted with visible red flecks billed as "Mexican spices" but lacking cumin, oregano, or chile heat and with an interior like instant mashed potatoes—with a bright, surreal-yellow nacho cheese dip that is thin, forms an unscoopable skin when warm, and tastes more processed than culinary. The sauce’s ingredient profile (processed dairy/oil components and additives including colorings) contributes to its chemically muted character. A loaded variation treats the fries like nachos—topped with seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese, sour cream, chopped tomatoes and optional guacamole—with the beef, guacamole, and squeeze-packet sauces (mild, hot, “fire,” and “diablo”) making the dish notably more palatable. Priced as a bargain on the dollar menu, the offering feels like a marketing maneuver to menace hamburger chains rather than a lasting culinary breakthrough, so its long-term popularity is doubtful." - Robert Sietsema

Food is rhe same as every other taco bell, but the servers here were a little frustrating. They told us the freeze machine was broken , but we saw an employee refilling her own freeze multiple times and drinking it at the counter. The person taking orders also kept asking why we were waiting on our food and what we got even though we were the only two there. She asked us at least 5 times to remind them what we ordered.

The pros: it’s an old school throwback 1990s vibe, if you’re feeling nostalgic this is the Bell for you. Yo Quiero Taco Bell! The cons: this location is a hot mess. Placed an online order for in store pickup. Went in to find chaos. Multiple Dashers waiting for orders. Multiple customers waiting for orders. Apparently someone gave away one delivery order to the wrong driver. Then people started coming in from drive thru that had the wrong orders. Let me point out this important fact: the staff were super nice and friendly. They just had no idea what to do. The drive thru person was trying to help at the front counter. The front counter person was trying to help on drive thru. There were 4 different people going back and forth trying to help. Then they started making the re-orders wrong. At this point I’ve been waiting more than a half hour and they’re no where near making my order as they’re in the weeds behind all these other orders. I simply (and nicely) asked the manager to cancel and refund my order so they could deal with their other issues. Lower their workload. Instead, she disappeared. Without comment. Almost 10 minutes later, she reappeared with my order. So now I feel bad because I did not want to jump in front of all those other people, two of which in the interim have also said they want refunds. Just nobody wants to be a captive prisoner at Taco Bell. Look, if someone has an hour for lunch at work, and they drive 10 min to Taco Bell (and presumably need to drive 10 min back), what’s the point in giving them their order 35 or 40 minutes late? There’s no time to eat the food. The weirdest part is just walking away without saying anything. Like “I’ll make your order now”. She may have had good intentions but … why? When the customer clearly and nicely said “please just cancel”. Is there some sort of internal policy where the people get in trouble for canceling and refunding an order? It’s weird. Again, super nice or at least neutral staff. I don’t think any of them deserve blame, they were all trying to help but it was a failure of training and leadership. There needs to be someone in charge to pull everyone out of the weeds, slow down, and get everyone in position to do their role and get back on track. So: visit for the decor, but probably eat somewhere else unless you have time to kill!

Traveling all over the United States can get kinda lonely & sometimes you need a touch of something totally familiar. Few things score on the point like Taco Bell. I'm a serious lover of tacos. Many things help create a touchstone of course the food and being open late are just a couple. The only thing keeping Taco Bell from 5 stars really isn't their fault. Mexican food is notoriously difficult to eat while driving. That's just a fact. I've watched for decades Taco Bell's valiant efforts to created such things. Some have been okay some not. But alas my beloved tacos are beyond reach. Perhaps that is by design. They require me to stop and take a few minutes from my journey. Allowing me to savior the delicious blending of the ingredients. After all nothing beats a really good crunchy Taco Supreme. Keep up the good work. I'll be on the road again soon.

Everytime I order from here through ubereats they seem to ignore all the add / remove options...got me spending extra money for no reason. It's not that hard yall 😭 and they forgot the chips but sent me 2 queso? 😭🤚 edit: Gave yall an extra star cause yall did me right with this burrito tho 😘

Google
Can I give the atmosphere unlimited stars!!? Drove 40 minutes with my friend to eat at this specific location because of it’s original 90s decor! My cheesy Gordita crunch was really good and the pink and blue booths brought me back to my childhood. I really appreciate this locations classic design, so if you’re looking for a classic Taco Bell experience this is it! 10/10 would visit again :)

It's better than the one near us. Plus, there was a cute chick there, and I was flirting as usual. She had clear glasses on. She was sooooo nice.

Yelp
Taco Bell is my go-to spot for comfort food. My favorite things to order is anything nacho-related, so the bellgrande, nachos & cheese sides, etc. I also love their cheesy gordita crunch and steak quesadilla. My least favorites are the desserts, as they often leave a weird aftertaste- no matter which one you pick. As for salsas, I'm a mild girl, as I don't like anything too spicy. The other kind of sauces they have are hot, fire, & diablo (and at one point they had 'Verde' which is a green spicy sauce). The dining area offers a lot of seating, including booths and chairs by the window. My preferred spot is to look outside and watch cars drive away from the drive-thru while I eat. The customer service is decent, which is better than saying it was horrible. If anything, I think the customers are the ones that are ruder than the staff. I've ordered from this place often through Doordash, and they've never gotten my meal wrong. They'll even throw in multiple sauce packets without you requesting them, which is nice since I tend to forget to add that to my order. Taco Bell is a safe choice for people who want to munch on latin-inspired food for a cheap price.

Yelp
it took over 40 minutes for my order to come out and it was just a supreme box and everyone kept acting confused when we would show them the order number and give them the name of the order

Yelp
This Taco Bell is conveniently located right off of Route 440 near the Hudson Mall, so it is easily accessible while you're running errands, heading home, etc. I have been to this location a few times, and none of the visits have been stellar, but again, I will pass through the drive-thru out of convenience on the way home every so often. I tend to always use the mobile app to place my order so that, by the time I arrive, I can pick up right away, or the order is almost ready to go. However, I placed the order at least 20 mins in advance, but when I got there, I was told that my order was not ready yet and to "please wait in the front". Okay, that's fine; if I have to wait, I'll wait. It's not the end of the world. I parked the car in the front and took a sip of my "Dr. Pepper". I say that brand loosely because I took one sip and almost choked. It was apparent that the syrup had run out in the fountain machine because I got colored, unflavored carbonated water in the cup; a far cry from the Dr. Pepper I requested. I took it in stride and decided, since I was waiting for my food order anyway, that I would get up and and just let the employees know and request something different. I got up and walked inside and I found a couple of employees working behind the counter. Now, as someone who used to work in the fast food industry, I understand that everyone has an assigned job and that each job has specific tasks associated with it. I get it, I really do, however, there wasn't ANY kind of acknowledgement to my existence standing there. Not a single, "hello" or "is there anything we can help you with?" There was nothing. The better part is that I know that the employees saw me because they were talking about me right in front of me still without addressing me. If I wasn't waiting on an order I already paid for, I would have absolutely walked out of there. I no longer wanted the food, I no longer wanted anything from there. I was disgusted with the way they were treating me despite how polite I was from start to finish. I don't know what the issue is, but this isn't what will inspire me to come back. And a tip to anyone reading this? You shouldn't either; you would be better off driving to a location that is further away but delivers better service.

Yelp
I was definitely given old/reheated food from the day prior. I ordered on Sunday 12/8, my food poisoning just barely wore off today 12/14. I've never had such a terrible reaction with this franchise. Someone isn't checking the quality of the food.

Yelp
This is a drive-through Taco Bell near the Hudson Mall. The entrance to the drive-through is narrow so it's easy to miss. We ordered a ton of food with customizations and they almost got everything right, but we were missing a couple of doughnuts. Their chalupa shells were also really soft and not crispy at all. Their cheesy gordita crunch tacos were underdone.

Yelp
I had a taste for Nachos on the go and decided to stop at The Bell! Lol So I ordered the nacho supreme and I haven't had this in years from Taco Bell. I have to say it was pretty good, huge portions plenty of guac which I was shocked about. It wasn't 5 star Tex mex but it served the craving. Young lady in the drive thru was very nice. I ordered some Nacho fries for my kid and they were tasty.

Mason M.

Yelp
This was terrible. The workers were constantly rushing you to order if you took too long they yelled at you and made you go to the kiosk. The food is terrible. Manager was constantly yelling at a worker to hurry up. it took at least an hour and 30 minutes to make the food.

Den C.

Yelp
serving hot coffee in a plastic cup. these people needs to be fired. they even gave me a straw to burn my tongue. wtf. Wednesday 8:45 pm order # 913195 if you are the supervisor reading this you know who to fire.

Yelp
This location makes you exercise. Drive through is always calm and takes extremely long time to make sure for accuracy and to make sure the food is hot... or warm... or I guess until the cheese is... not melted at all in a quesadilla. also, for your safety, they always ask you to park in the front to get your food regardless of if there are any other customers or not). They always ask for your receipt, even though they never tell you to keep it (some receipts, I would imagine end up in the trash can right next to the drive thru window). They always don't put any sauce, and when you ask for it, they roll their eyes. Lastly, if you are lucky, you maybe asked to go inside and repeat to them what you ordered in the drive thru and make you wait for 10 minutes, even though all the people that ordered after you already ate and left. This is truly a remarkable level of consistency that I have never experienced. This franchise location must be examined for their stellar, consistent bad service!

Yelp
Its taco bell. Everyone knows what to expect before ordering and eating this. This type of food is best when craving something around midnight or later. Or after a night of drinking. Or after smoking. That's when taco bell is the best. People might complain but everyone gets taco bell from time to time, as we all have the craving once in a blue moon!
google avatar

Hannah V.

Yelp
It's Taco Bell, so you're already not expecting much. But this was absolutely terrible. The service was horrible couldnt even give me what I asked for. Don't waste your time or money.

Yelp
We are a school. We order from the Taco Bell in Bayonne (21 -33 E. 53rd St) twice a month for our 110 students and have done so for 3 years. We email our order a week in advance and pick it up. When our office personnel went in to get the large order, it wasn't done. They never received word from Reynaldo (general manager) that it was to be prepared. The 2 other managers in charge (Trevor, Marlin) ALSO were unwilling to help us and told our Admin. Ass't she was acting like a 'jerk' then rudely hung up on us. We had 88 students to feed and no one was willing to help. Thankfully, our local pizza parlor MONA LISA's took advantage of the sale and provided. We will NEVER use Taco Bell again.

Yelp
The drive thru line was very long, and they took ages to just take orders. Once I paid, I was told to pull forward and my food would be taken out to me. So I go around the corner, and it's the entire lot plus a long line full of vehicles waiting for food. People that pulled in AFTER me and with BIGGER orders got their food and left. After 45 minutes, I was given my food, except they made it wrong! Another 15 minutes later, and I finally got my ONE MEAL. I don't understand why it's so difficult to make tacos of all things. Never going to this location again.
google avatar

Eileen H.

Yelp
This is a new location and it shows. We went through the drive thru at 10:30pm on a Saturday night. It wasn't fast but wasn't super slow. We ordered 3 hard tacos, two burritos and a crunch wrap. The tacos barely had any meat in them and the crunch wrap had no crunch-- turns out they didn't put the tostada in it. C'mon guys...get your sh*t together...

Yelp
The place in Bayonne 21-33 East 53 rd Street Was awesome Clean food was Great... Just don't know the phone number and can't find them on Yelp...

Yelp
Taco Bell understands me. I lived off the dollar menu in college and, even though we don't see each other as much as we used to, I like to visit every now and then. But there was there was dark time in our relationship where, for two years, this Taco Bell on 440 was the closest location. Let me tell you, folks, I almost had to call it quits for good. Someone from Taco Bell corporate needs to go all Gordon-Ramsey-in-Kitchen Nightmares on this location because it is TRASH. How is it even possible for the food to be so much worse than literally every other Taco Bell. How hard it is to slap some ground up cow/horse/sofa/whatever the hell it is and microwave it for 30 seconds? And how is it so consistently bad? Is it just one guy with ten arms that never sleeps? Shout out to the people who take my order cause you've always been nice and never get it wrong, but damn does your Taco Bell needs Jesus.
google avatar

Bhavnit K.

Yelp
Was visiting near by market when saw this taco-bell. It was quite bigger than usual Taco Bell outlets I have seen. Not so clean but does not look bad either. As per the location, it has less number of staff which results in slow service. I waited for 20 mins to get chicken nuggets and a chicken quesadilla. Tip - If you want quick service, order from drive through.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Slow as hell. Like unbelievably, crazy motherfucking slow. I almost thought I'd be getting table service that's how slow it was. It was also crazy crowded inside, complete with annoying ass teenagers who want to gloat about their youth and sing to bad songs in the middle of the restaurant. But the food was hot, "fresh" (hahaha) and delicious. Doritos Locos Tacos 4eva! p.s. next time when I say, "no cheese," this bitch means no cheese.
google avatar

Delia Y.

Yelp
I love going to this spot due to customer service the food is always prepped to my liking as well as Speedy service
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
I was running through the six with my double decker taco. Eating in the parking lot like a true recluse. Good music to just hang out to. Ambience is very chill. Tacos are great. 2 and a half stars...they always give me basic tacos when I order a taco supreme. Danny Beats on the track. Future. Where ya ass was at when we was recording in the baffroom
google avatar

Andres M.

Yelp
They always close earlier than when they are supposed to, and the food is always messy and stale.
google avatar

Clarity S.

Yelp
Taco Bell thank you I'm so happy for you the Cinnabon delights is mostly the only thing that me and my boyfriend go for but it most likely one of my favorite fast food places to go convenient for the most part fairly reasonably price as well as good customer service depending on location Keep doing what you doing recently they have had to donate three dollars and you get several soft tacos for less which is always a plus because the food is always the same.
google avatar

Trevor L.

Yelp
Probably the best place in walking distance to get breakfast while my car is being maintenance at nearby dealers.

Bigbag B.

Yelp
Super disappointed as a Taco Bell enthusiasts im shocked on how bad I was treated cos I made the staff aware of the most simplest error they could have made I ordered a chicken quesdilla and got a steak I asked for it to be switched then was told there wasn't any chicken left for the quesadillas mind you the person right after me was able to order one ...then I said I didn't get any napkins or utensils and the people behind the counter started speaking in there native tongue and don't realize I could understand they said things far as I should spit in his quesdilla tell him we have no more chicken and take the steak and get the fuck out already I hate costumers like him they think we are a five start this fast food and when I told them I understood They handed me my bag and asked me to leave or they would call the cops I never had such a horrible experience in any place of business I was a valued Taco Bell costumers in my old neighborhood but coming to this one was extramly traumatizing I don't think I would ever eat at a Taco Bell again super upset
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Still the best 'stoner' food out there. The quesarito is the best concoction that Taco Bell has ever devised. The grilled stuffed burrito is awesome (I always order without beans as the beans tend to take over). The Doritos loco taco is delicious. The cheesy gordita crunch is my favorite. Now all this mention of food explains Taco Bell on the whole- tasty food for cheap. In this particular location, fast food it is not. It always takes forever to get your order. I NEVER go through the drive thru- they ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, forget something. Do yourself a favor and park in their massive parking lot, go inside to place your order and check it before you leave. The dining room is always clean and so are the food prep areas. This location has a pretty friendly staff (but remember that it is fast food).
google avatar

T H.

Yelp
The workers are always friendly and helpful to me. This is probably one of the cleaner Taco Bell restaurants I have been to...much cleaner than Manhattan ones! It's nice inside, and sometimes you forget that you are in rotgut dirty Journal Square, lol. I always get friendly service here. It takes a while to get the food, but that's because the employees have such a tiny space to work in...it's literally a narrow food assembly station, about the width of a doorway. The lunch rush gets crazy, but other times it's usually not a super long wait. It's fast food, so don't expect much, but it usually is fresh at least. It's Taco Bell, you know what you are getting, it's not Chipotle, so don't judge it as such! Heh! Overall a good dining experience, quite rare in Journal Square.
google avatar

Angelica S.

Yelp
It's a fast food joint, what is there to review?? its all processed food lol. How can you hate taco bell??
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
You have munchies...you want a quick munch fix...this is it,...its not reallly packed inside if you eat inside...most people go thru the drive thru....its located outer part of 440 hudson mall...there is plenty of parking...and staff are friendly and quick to get your food ready... #fastfood at its best.

Yelp
This is the only Taco Bell that I've ever been to in my life that doesn't have hot sauce or salsa. After ordering, I asked the woman for hot sauce; She said, "We don't have any." She shrugged her shoulders and shouted for the next customer to pick up their food. I drove way out of my way for Taco Bell, but Taco Bell just isn't Taco Bell without the salsa. Wish I could give this place ZERO stars.
google avatar

Ruben V.

Yelp
9pm on a tuesday night. Was quiet. Took them like a minute to get my food out and ready. Food was nice and hot. Place looks clean. Just like all the other taco bells. Whats there not to like
google avatar

Rich D.

Yelp
Fairly decent in terms of Taco Bell franchise locations. The staff is nice and professional, and they keep the place clean. West Side area of Jersey City isn't that bad so there's little riff-raff in here. All you really need to know is this: YES! This location carries the fabled Enchiritto!!
google avatar

RM C.

Yelp
So far i haven't had any problems with this taco bell. My order is always right and the food really hot! The only problem occurs mostly on weekends when everyone decides they have the munchies and hit up the drive thru after 11pm expect to wait in line for atleast 15mins.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Well. Not enough meat in my tacos. Of course there is one price listed and then when they read your total it's 10.00 higher. I rarely eat out so, I guess it is my fault. Wasn't horrible. But wasn't great.

J N.

Yelp
Ordered a few items to go and everything was barely even hot, let alone warm. The food was stale, cold, and bland . Never coming here again.

Manan P.

Yelp
Horrible, disgusting experience today. The employees are not courteous nor do they call the Manager when asked for one. Extremely unprofessional and there was a large line of customers who kept coming back saying their order was wrong at the pick up area. The employee would not even acknowledge anyone and instead kept shouting cuss words at the back
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
I criticized someone for giving the Taco Bell 4stars in Belleville. I'm giving the staff here at the Jersey City location 4 stars for great service and handling a small screw up quickly and professionally. Taco Bell food will always be 2 stars no matter what the location is. But this is the first location getting 4 stars for their staff and performance.

Sunil K.

Yelp
We visited this place and ordered a few things. It took more than 35 mins for order to come. So I asked cashier what's Going. Her name is Jescenia. She was so rude and arrogant. Everyone after us got food. They gave food but one item chalupa was missing. Horrible service. Horrible staff. No customer service at all.

Nasir T.

Yelp
Terrible service always get the order incorrect food is never hot and always put together sloppily! Don't eat here you will regret it!!!
google avatar

Simas U.

Yelp
So this is walking distance to me... I thought I would just walk over and get a couple things and go home. I waited 10 mins to place my order and 20 (!!!!!!!) to receive it. Some people even got their money back. Wow, just wow. I feel bad for the workers to work for such a poorly managed place, even for a Taco Bell.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Pretty decent Taco Bell if you sit in. If you go through drive thru they tend to mess up your order a lot.
google avatar

jessy b.

Yelp
Aww the junk food, got to love it!!! who doesn't? :-). Too bad they are not open past 2 am :-) ...
google avatar

Foodie P.

Yelp
Cheap and okay food. Needs happier crew. I've been stopping by after school everyday for the past week as I am so busy studying that I can do not have time to make meals. Usually the staff is nonchalant but this afternoon one of the male cashier was rudely staring at me while cleaning trays. It made me feel so unsafe. He is there almost every night and I thought he was an okay server but tonight I understood that he likes to talk about the customers as he loudly tells another employee when serving me that he needs to tell him something. I was appalled at the behavior at this restaurant. I don't feel comfortable going there anymore as I am afraid my food may be tampered with by all of this gossip about the customers.

Kurt B.

Yelp
worst taco bell ever. waited 30+ minutes because they forgot my order. no apology, no thing, just attitude from the idiot that hastily put together some terrible food. AVOID

Renita S.

Yelp
I would give this place more stars but they can't get a simple order right. The cashier was very friendly but the people who prepared my food were too busy gossping to see that I asked for my #4 meal have beans and no beef. That's the only request I had. I should've checked my order while I was there but didn't think it was hard to place beans in food instead of beef. So I ended throwing the meal away since I was too far away already.

Jaclyn M.

Yelp
I love taco bell... the service is great and the workers are very nice.. the food is always fresh and workers r very nice....

Customer C.

Yelp
Very slow service at the drive through. I had to wait 30 minutes to get my order. This is undeniably the worst waiting time I have ever had in a fast food restaurant. They need to significantly improve on that otherwise they'll lose good customers.
