Netflix’s ‘Always Be My Maybe’ and the Trap of ‘Authentic’ Asian Food | Eater

"For some diners, authenticity is defined by personal nostalgia for inexpensive, fast-food items—cheesy quesadillas and hard tacos from a national budget chain—illustrating that what counts as ‘authentic’ often reflects individual experience rather than culinary orthodoxy." - Jenny G. Zhang

I'm addicted to the beef muchaco with one salsa container. The fry bread this is wrapped in is just so good. Warm and pillowy. I need one now!

Just pulled away from the drive-thru. And I was short maybe 15 cents. The manager said it was okay this time. And I am a regular so this doesn't normally happen. I just love the community and unconditional love this company displays. Through their food and their service. This is why I come here instead of the bell! Ps: I have like 6 'official Taco of the cowboys' cups. THANK YOU!! 🥹🫶🏾

Google
I bought 3 flowers tortillas for 68c witch is less then 1$ but they only gave me one so don't order online from this store they cheat you your order to save on time or food cost. I work at McDonald's and we will let you know without giving you a scam. It's that the dasher it's the store. They work hard but lazy when it's comes to being to being to late. Super disappointed but they gave me food so I'm not mad just wanted to give anyone a heads up on how this store works.

Went there Sunday and me and 2 other family members are just now recovering from food poisoning, not sure what it was we bought tacos and bean burritos with the salsa. I will say the tacos or shells had a weird taste so I stopped eating but 1 hour later I had projectile vomiting then my husband then my son. We went to the doctor and was prescribed ant nausea medication and told to eat a bland diet. I hope nobody else gets sick. I love taco bueno but it will be a very long time before I buy from them again.

The MOD was very rude! We told them no meat, and they put chili sauce, which chili sauce that I know is chiles sauce. We went back through the line and I told him, I said I Spanish and when u say chile sauce u mean peppers. I mentioned I was Boricua. He said," we'll this isn't Puerto Rico this is Dallas" I was like okayyyyy. He was very rude, never going here again. Lost my appetite.

Google
Typically, I wouldn’t leave a review, but I was so impressed by the food, professionalism, demeanor, and quality of the food that I just had to say something. After a long workout, I ordered taco bueno. I ordered 6 party burritos, and two quesadillas. I asked for extra hot sauce, and sour cream. When I pulled through the drive through around 11:45pm on Saturday night 1/22/22, the cashier was very friendly. He repeated my order back to me, and told me that they were making my food fresh and it would be a few minutes. I pulled around and waited like 5 minutes, and he WALKED THE FOOD OUT TO MY CAR WITH A SMILE, and even wished me a nice meal. I work in a customer service industry, and when I have interactions like this whereby the employee is kind, knowledgeable, and takes pride in his work, especially during times like these, it absolutely makes me want to do business with them again. It may not mean too much, but this experience absolutely made my night. The food was warm, perfectly cooked, and I enjoyed it so much. Taco Bueno, please look to promote employees like this to positions of leadership, and instill the culture of positivity and quality in your organization- Great Job!!

Google
I ordered chicken quesadilla the chicken was dry like leather I threw it out it was gross. Tried to call and this location keeps they're phone off line so you can't reach anyone only a busy signal

Yelp
I've never had a complaint with Taco Bueno. For the last 25 years I've ordered bean burritos, I'm a vegetarian and get the bean burrito excluding the beef sauce. The salsa bar really helps make the burritos outstanding. I'd as soon eat at Taco Bueno, for a reasonable price, as I would a Mexican restaurant costing twice the price. No complaints in 25 years regarding service or ambiance. The Taco Bueno I go to is located on Central Expressway.

Yelp
The tacos are always amazing, not greasy like the other taco fast food place. I've been coming here since I was a little girl. Texas girls like bueno. Ps- bring back cinnamon chips please!!!!!!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
For fast food tacos, I think Bueno is the best. Their tacos are always consistently good and they don't skimp on the ingredients. Their salsa bar is awesome, so I typically eat inside. The staff is always friendly.

Yelp
I have not been to bueno since i ordered cinni chips and the smelled like old oil and i decided to try again and yet again they didnt fail just Disgusting I ordered the mucho nacho and again the chip literally smelled like old oil that had been sitting in a pot for days and tasted like plastic or fake chips Amd ordered extra sauce on some combination burrito and no sauce.

Yelp
I went here last night and they got my order wrong and of course I noticed it after I already paid. So she fixed my order with a little attitude and then when I asked for a return that made her more mad. But I don't care she got my order wrong and it's not my fault

Charles S.

Yelp
More like Taco Excellenté! Great salsa, warm chips, awesome entrees. The people working here were very nice and helpful. Will be back.

Yelp
For good, easy fast food, Taco Bueno, 75 North Central, between Southwestern Blvd and Caruth Haven LN, is a good place to go. Staff is pleasant, very efficient, and service is great.

Yelp
Used to come here before Covid when my office was next door. Food is meh but the dining room seems never busy and it's a goos place to eat in. Their current chicken taquito promo is not great. Taquito is more flaky than crispy. Appreciate the white meat ingredient but it wasn't appetizing enough for me to come back. The taquito poster is misleading. You think it comes with a jalapeño ranch dip but one other dip costs extra. Would've preferred a complimentary dip plus another if 2 or 4 pack taquitos were ordered. Filled out their survey but had no use for the free taco. Won't be coming back any time soon.

Yelp
OMG SO YUMMY!!!!! I always come here or at least 1 time a week. I was starving after my workout and came here! I usually get the nachos or party tacos. It's super cheap and they actually MAKE their beans here.. unlike Taco Bell who just use flakes and water! ANYWAY, the people here are really nice but the guy in the drive thru in the evenings is SO RUDE! He doesn't listen and he literally CUTS YOU OFF when your saying your order. He needs to be trained again... Thanks for reading my review!
google avatar

Alison K.

Yelp
Some days I just want a combo burrito and a simple side taco. Today I got those in the drive thru and requested the usual red salsa. What I got was about the hottest most inedible red salsa ever. Why would they serve this especially in the drive thru? I hope the guy who was working and laughing this afternoon at 4:14pm is happy. Not going back anytime soon.

Yelp
I'm a Buenohead at heart and this location has never disappointed! With the closing of the Lemmon location, this has become my go-to Bueno location. Located off Central Expressway/75 near SMU, this Taco Bueno cranks out great food, always nails my custom orders, and serves it all up with excellent service (having visited both drive through and dine in, I've always had consistent, good service from every worker I've encountered.) So perhaps you're asking "what's good?" The short answer: everything! Since I was a wee young lad I've always had the Mexi Dips & Chips as my go to favorite but I also enjoy their muchacos, potato burritos, and for dessert: don't miss the cheesecake chimichangas! They also have a great salsa bar so you can load up and customize your order to your liking. I always go for their classic red salsa. Also keep a keen eye turned to the menu as they are always running various promotions and featuring limited time/specialty items. So anytime work sends me to Dallas and I need to satiate that Bueno craving this is the location you'll find me at. This location is now open 24hrs as well (drive thru) so no matter when I need my Bueno, I now can get it!

Yelp
service was great but we order bean burritos. not cheese. Went back and was told that how they are made order here before so I know they were wrong and cheese cost more than beans

Update you guys phone number on the internet please I'm out of money and gas cuz I'm not eating hairy tacos Minus the hair Taco Bueno which has some good tacos

Yelp
This place has two drive throughs, I drove through one, waited for about three minutes and no one answered, so I backed up and went into the next one. I had to sit behind someone and they had to give their order three times before the attendant got it. There was a lot of yelling on the speaker. Also there was someone in the other drive-through and they had a repeat their order a couple of times. By the time I got up to the speaker, I gave my order twice and the worker said she couldn't hear me. At that point, I told them to forget about it and backed up and left. Ten minutes wasted!
google avatar

Yelp
They hook the portions up. Go inside, it's faster. Clean and delicious. Don't listen to the people worried about "landscaping". We're in the middle of the city you guys
google avatar

Yelp
Literally ordered tacos for my family and I I just came home from a long day of work and they serve me tacos with barely anything in them literally all of it! Idk if they were short of meat or something but this is highly upsetting. I can't see myself returning there.

Yelp
Waited in drive thru 30 minutes with 4 cars ahead of me. Still had to wait for two taco platter at window. Chips smelled very bad the grease needs changed. Update I go about once a week and experience has been great. The experience I had prior must have been an off day. Update: I still come here once a week. It's hit and miss. No guacamole and sour cream with the platter one day. Another day chips smelled bad again and had to toss them again. That's pretty bad when you often pay for them. Today a yes please to salsa = not getting any salsa. I was also accused of saying "steak" when I never said it by two employees on the speaker. The only word close was "Tuesday". Long wait this time and new cashiers are hard to understand from last few visits. Maybe it's time to go elsewhere. Ugh please and yes still mean NO SALSA FOR YOU. Snap :(((((( Ok. Today they most have got a fresh shipment because everything was so great. 8/26/17 the muchaco platter was so good today! Chips thin and crisp. Beans not solid, muchaco bread insane good. I tried one before in another city they was horrible but this one was great! Wow something really wrong with place 3/9/19 got a poison unsweetened tea but it wasn't tea at all. It was like coffee tar. Almost threw up. Called to let them know and didn't care at all. I'm done with this place. Plus never thanked me. Very weird experience. I posted a picture of the poison whatever it was that was nothing like unsweetened tea

Yelp
No bueno on the landscaping. When we pulled up I didn't want to eat here after seeing how they take care of the landscaping. My husband made me and after we both agreed that the way they kept up their yard should've been a sign of how the food would be. No bueno! It's sloppy and unbecoming. Have some pride in your establishment and get management to do their job and make it presentable. Very disappointing. Especially when you are next door the In-N-out where they take pride in appearance and quality. 1 star for y'all.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food but very slow service. Dining room customers are not given any attention. All the focus is on the drive-thru customers.

Yelp
Sometimes we are just living our lives then decide to grab some bueno... party burritos and salsa hit the spot. Its good they are open late! We have a Taco Bell across the street but prefer to drive the miles.

Yelp
I used to LOVE Taco Beuno! It was one of the best fast food places to go. Greasy and cheesy goodness in every last bite. The chicken nachos were my absolute favorite item to get. My chips would get a little soggy from the cheese, which was my favorite part! I had not been to a Bueno in quite some time so I decided to stop off on a road trip and get some of my delicious nachos. To my surprise, they changed their chips AND their queso!!! WHAT?! WHY?! They have also changed their chicken. It is equal to the rubber junk you get on a dank Subway sandwich. The chips... just awful! There are no freaking words! They taste exactly like Taco Bell's chips. The queso... flavorless. So gross! Nothing like it used to be AT. ALL! Why in the world would you change your menu like that??? I have seen other people's reviews that are just as put off as myself. Change it back or keep losing your Bueno Heads.
google avatar

Yelp
Went to the drive thru last night and the person asked me for my order I wasn't prepared so I politely asked her if she could give me a minute. The person then said in Spanish to someone "yeah because I have all day to wait on you". I was infuriated and told her next time she needs to make sure that her mic isn't on or better yet not talk rude about customers. She proceeded to laugh and ask me if I wanted anything or not...NOT!!! Nevertheless I left angry and hungry.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Taco Bueno is basically just like Taco Bell, aka a place that's best enjoyed after 1 am. If getting tacos you definitely need to order multiple, as they're small and don't have a lot of filling. They go down easily but definitely have that sort of greasy, fast food feel to them (which to be fair is exactly what they are)
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
I pulled up to Taco Bueno on one of those late night tips...leaving the club drunk and need whatever is open.. yeah one of those nights. The drive through was crazy packed on Saturday night! Guess I'm not the only one who has those fast food cravings after drinking. Once we finally got to the screen to order they of course had some kind of system issue and couldn't take the orders... waited another 5 minutes and finally ordered. This was the first time I had been here so I was apprehensive about some of the choices. Some kind of super burrito thing was the end result and well.. it was explosive lol

Yelp
I was very happy with this visit and I'm a regular since the first day this location opened (back when I was skinny). The last visit was through the drive thru as I saw a line at the counter and there was only one in the drive through. My order was easy, I had the cash ready and as I opened the window, the drink was handed to me. Rest of the order followed as I paid. Total time from order to driving off was under 3 minutes. The team behind the window were friendly and smiling. Great service on this visit. I noticed that their drive through is now open 24 hours.

Yelp
Okay this is based on buying food inside for to-go and eating some there with the plan of taking some of the food home for leftovers. BEWARE... Yuck! I ordered a Big Friggin' Crispy Beef Taco (for there) and a Bueno Chilada Platter to reheat for another meal or maybe 2... You know munchie/snack meals. #don't I loved my crispy beef BFT that I ate in-house. The reason they even got 1 star. Well, that and the staff seemed personable and knowledgeable as they got my order right and served pretty quick. The "to-go" Bueno Chillada Platter = MINUS 5 for trying to reheat. #disgusting So I bought this "food" at about 9 pm and ate my BFT utilizing the salsa bar and the sour cream and guac from the "to-go" Chillada Platter. Later that night here comes a snack about 2 am so I TRIED to reheat some of the "enchiladas", rice and beans. It was glue like, rubbery and simply NASTY trash. That's where it ALL ended up... TRASH CAN. Again, don't think you can reheat their food later as I ALWAYS do from REAL Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants very often. This is some weird processed and artificial"food product" and I do not know what the ingredients are, but something tells me I most likely couldn't pronounce more have of that CHEMICAL based "food".

Yelp
So I'm new to Texas and am still trying to get a feel for all food places- fast food and sit down. I've never heard of Taco Bueno before moving here and it seems like a busy spot. I was anticipating it would be similar to Taco Bell or Del Taco, the California fast food taco places. I was in a rush and was getting real hangry so I needed something fast lol. I thought taco bueno was actually not bad at all! I ordered a combo (#4) with a basic crispy taco and the beef Bueno burrito. Price point was very similar to Taco Bell ($5-6 combos). I thought the taco was alright. Had a decent amount of meat and the crispy shell was warm. The burrito was better and it was a decent portion size- lots of meat, beans, and rice inside. Salsa was nice and fresh- Not the hot sauce packets I'm used to from Taco Bell. I'm happy this place wasn't as terrible as i thought!

Fahad G.

Yelp
Was trying to get in n out next door but they had some technical difficulties and were turning customers away. Ended up at this place and O Boy! Had the worst chills ever after eating the food then diarrhea. Should have gone with my gut and getting Taco Bell instead.
google avatar

Montell W.

Yelp
I sat at the drive threw for almost 45 minutes trying to place my order for a cheesy chilada platter. The drive threw attendant kept telling me to hold on and was taking the order of the first drive threw instead of the second. I asked her what was the issue and she said ill throw everything away and leave!!!!!
google avatar

Joseph X.

Yelp
translation a good taco lives up to the name friendly staff i came in from a run on a hundred degree day the mujer buena offered me a cup so i could fill it with water i said no thanks ill just take a cup of salsa bueno. gracious

Addison M.

Yelp
Are you guys open 24/7 or not? Need to change your hours if they are not correct online. Loveeeeeeee the foooood thooooo
google avatar

Farnaz M.

Yelp
Literally every single time I go here they mess up my order. Even when I ask them to correct it after I've already left the drive thru. Like how hard ca it possibly be to keep tomatoes off of a taco? Maybe they have something personal against me. Because this is the issue every damn time. I'll just go to a different location. Y'all suck
google avatar

Yelp
The one off hampton in Dallas 8051 good food and fast love it

Yelp
Since I posted a review of Taco Bell a while back I figured I may as well provide equal opportunity and rate this Taco Bueno. I've been here three times and each time I was very satisfied. I like the taco platter-- I get the crispy beef tacos. It comes with chips, beans and rice, sour cream, and a dollop of guac for only $3.99. A real deal. My only question concerns what is the proper portion. Once I got three tacos to the order, another time only two. Either way, it was more than enough food, but usually fast food places are pretty consistent as to what constitutes an order. I also like the fresh--not store bought I think--salsa, and pico. Taco Bueno's tacos are far superior to those of Taco Bell in my opinion--larger, shells are crispier, meat is more flavorful, and they come topped with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. When I'm in the mood for fast food Mexican this is my choice.

Jordan D.

Yelp
Don't bother wasting money here let alone on certain items like the 'mucho tostada'. Pretty sure a penny is thicker than this tostadas toppings. What happened to alllllll the toppings advertised because all I got was refried beans, cheese and lettuce. Also ordered a burrito with sour cream... glad I paid extra for it to be in only one bite. Update*** Yet again another tostado picture of jack shit. Oh yeah, and no drink that I've paid for. The neck dip and chip beans are so hard ever single chip I even try to scoop or skim on top break. Disgusting. I've emailed this company numerous times and they want to offer free gift cards instead of change within this location. Sad to see customers don't matter within this company and their money is given to you like a donation you don't deserve.

Diane B.

Yelp
I recently purchased 2 taco salads. And order an side order of meat on each and i still had more lettuce then meat. I think you all should add more meat on the salad. If i hadn't paid for extra i couldn't have been able to see or taste. I do like Taco Bueno Always room for improvement
google avatar

Victor V.

Yelp
My fatass drives 9 miles down the freeway to get me a bite and it's well worth it. Always fresh and hot when I get my number 2 with a coke.
google avatar

Yelp
It's like taco bell's ugly cousin. Very greasy and bland. Their muchaco is their take on the chalupa. But it's not even good.

Abigail J.

Yelp
So today (Jan 9, 2020) at 3 in the morning my friend and I decide to get some Bueno. It was my second time here in years so I kind of took my time in the drive thru to order because I'm not familiar with their menu. Once it's my turn to receive my food, the guy who attended us kind of had an attitude but we didn't mind. We get our food and check if we weren't missing anything and we were missing some dips (sour cream and ranch) and we ask for it but he rudely tells us that there's no ranch. They could've told us this while we were ordering or he could've kindly told us that they ran out. He then gives us the sour cream and immediately shuts the window. We comment to each other on how he's probably having a bad time and drive off. We get home i open one of the burritos and they gave me the wrong freaking burrito! I normally wouldn't mind but this guy was just so rude that it just has to bother me now. Yes, I am aware that I could've seen this at the window but I felt rushed to leave when he shut the window like if he didn't want to deal with us anymore. I wish I would've looked at his name but I don't remember even seeing a tag on him. He probably was wearing one but I wasn't focused on that at the moment.

Yelp
Sunday night, 10/29/17 at 9:10. Please note: they were not busy in the dining room or in the drive-through. Slow service in drive through with only 2 cars ahead. Ordered beef taco platter with crispy tacos---got 1 crispy taco and a muchaco; ordered a chicken big-ole-burrito---got a chicken muchaco; ordered 2 regular (party?) beef tacos and 1 regular (party?) bean burrito---got an extra bean burrito and an extra chips n queso; ordered extra pico de gallo and got none. All food at room temperature after a short drive, chips crisp but tasting like old oil, ALL food unseasoned and tasteless (this is Mexican food?). Not the first time, but it is the last. Taco Bueno is not even a shadow of its "glory days," and I wish there were a way to give "minus" stars, this place is that bad!!
google avatar

Shoshana W.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick. It's and was rewarded with cold, bland, and underwhelming tacos. I think you'd be better off eating anything else!
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Disgusting food. I worked at a Taco Bueno as my first job 20 years ago. Back then the food was wonderful! The last couple years, though, they've changed everything up. The beef on my taco tonight literally tasted like dead cow. The brisket on my nachos tasted like dead rat. The queso isn't nearly as good as it used to be. And the sour cream was some sort of watered down light version. No wonder they keep shutting down stores. This is my last visit to a TB ever. RIP, old friend.
google avatar

Edward B.

Yelp
I was walking over to In-and-Out Burger and noticed Taco Bueno next door so I figured I would give it a try. The prices are pretty decent and the food was good - I would say if you like Taco Bell or Del Taco this is better quality food - and the salsa bar was a nice touch.

Ronnie C.

Yelp
The food is good but double the price compared to pre COVID-19 prices.Party tacos and burritos were 69 cents or 79 cents. Now they're $1.49.I hope it's cleaner than when I worked there. They would serve moldy beans and lettuce. We had to scrape mold off of beans and use black lettuce I would tell customers and they would still order and complain.
google avatar

Yelp
Do not do online ordering at this location. If you wanna pay multiple times and be ignored for an hour, then be my guest!! Very poor customer service!! I will not be returning to this location!
