The Best Tacos in Houston | Eater Houston

"With five outposts in Downtown, Spring Branch, the Galleria area, Cypress, and Katy, Taco Fuego is a taco lover’s paradise. Enjoy street-style, halal tacos, such as its hefty Texan brisket taco topped with corn, jalapenos, and crunchy pickled red onions, plus sides like empanadas, queso, and street corn. The birria, which comes in the form of tacos, ramen, and quesadillas, is a top seller, and diners also fall hard for Fuego’s Crunchwrap. This nostalgic-inducing riff on a fast-food favorite combines meat, rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, aioli, creamy cilantro sauce, and a tostada, all wrapped in a tortilla and grilled." - Brianna Griff

Google
I came in after getting my nails done and I must say I was not disappointed. I was warmly greeted by Mike, and he gave me a few recommendations. I got the Chicken Birria Ramen, it was amazing!!! The noodles weren’t too chewy and they weren’t too soft. And it was seasoned to perfection. The music was great too. I will most definitely be coming back.

Google
the birria tacos are bomb dot com and the fuego fries. fries is a hugee serving with lots of birria meat. tacos are the same, good amount of meat and has really good flavor! service is super friendly, i would definitely reccomend. :))

Google
I ordered the birria tacos, a burrito and the fuego fries. The guy who waited on us was rude and barely spoke english. His body language was loud and his nails were disgusting. He clearly doesn't wash them! I had to ask if they wore gloves when prepping the food because the lady handling the onions did not have on gloves. I won't be back! The chicken burrito was dry and bland! The food wasn't worth the price.

Google
I’ve eaten here twice and tried a third time but they weren’t open during the advertised business hrs. The food is actually pretty tasty and they have some great sauces to put on the tacos. The people at the counter are not very friendly and seem like they could care less if you order anything. If that doesn’t bother you, you’ll be fine. Giving the food a 4 and the atmosphere/service a 2. That averages out to a 3 for the establishment as a whole. Ta Bueno in the area has better food and a WAY better atmosphere.

Google
Decided to stop here for a quick lunch and it did not disappoint ! I got the 5 taco combo which came with a drink ! Soo freaking good ! Their sauces are amazing as well and i spent $13 so very reasonable for lunch . It wasn’t busy and the food came out within 10 minutes . Overall a great experience with wonderful food . I will be back

Google
Finally a mexican place in cypress that didn’t disappoint me! We’ve tried a bunch of different mexican places on barker cypress when we’re having a craving and don’t want to drive far, and constantly are not impressed with the quality of food we get. But alas, the food we ordered was delicious! The meat was seasoned and cooked well, their different salsa options were so yummy, and not too much on the spicy side(although personally I love spicy salsa). Even the queso and guacamole were fresh and so addicting. Sometimes we go to other restaurants and even the queso and the guacamole are plain/bland, but not this place. My only “complaint” is that the prices were more on the expensive side so we didn’t order as much as we wanted to, but nonetheless we really enjoyed our lunch here and will definitely be back to try other stuff we saw on the menu.

Google
The Birria de Res and Tacos Al Pastor are both stand outs here. Very flavorful, on the spicy side, and messy — all things evident of really good tacos. They are addicting. Seems to be under new management a few months ago, they also were close randomly over the last couple weeks, however, they are still operating and the food is only getting better. I love the new additions of the pastor and grilled onions and the spicy potatoes on the side.

Google
Taco Fuego - you really disappointed today! I was really looking forward to trying Taco Fuego after finding them on Google, especially the nachos. I don’t eat meat, but my sister does, so we ordered the nachos with the Birria meat on the side. I clearly told the woman at the register that I do not eat meat and just wanted the meat separate. To my surprise, the nachos came out with all the toppings on the side—not just the meat. On top of that, there was no melted cheese on the chips—which is basically the entire point of nachos. I politely told the woman at the register that there was no cheese, and she insisted the container I had on the table had it. I showed her it was actually sour cream, not cheese. I asked if they could please take the chips back and melt cheese on them. When she returned, the chips barely had any cheese, and I was told, “That’s all we can put.” I again showed her that I had a full plate of plain chips with no cheese, and still, there was no effort to make it right. We asked to speak with a manager, and were told no one was available. The lady said she doesn’t know who’s the manager and they only communicate if it’s an emergency. Kind of contradicting. My sister and I were very hungry, so we stayed and basically ate bare chips, dipping into the containers with the toppings. My sister did enjoyed the Birria meat very much. It was disappointing, especially given how excited we were to try the place. Service matters, and so does the food experience. Unfortunately, we left feeling very disappointed.

Yelp
Been here about 5 times now and every time it's good. The birria tacos are delicious, the street corn is good. Really cool little set up with a 00's Houston rap vibe . The food came out really fast, I don't see any issues with this spot. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
The photos and menu all look and sound amazing. The food came out actually looking like the photos! I have no complaints about the customer service, unlike the other reviews. The place is also a little bit pricey. However, the main reason for the low rating is due to the taste. The food looks better than it tastes. My husband and I thought the food was very salty. The birria itself was salty, so when mixed with the other sauces, it was salt overload. Even the grilled chicken quesadilla was salty. The fries themselves are great; you don't have to make them Fuego style. I think you could just order them plain and dip them into the sauces they have to offer. The four sauces themselves are very good. I just wished that the meal allowed me to enjoy it with them.

Yelp
Terrible customer service and low quality food. I wouldn't waste your time stopping here. Even the restrooms are filthy as well. Please be aware and eat elsewhere.

Yelp
Customer service was horrid. Food took about an hour for about 6 tacos and a cup of corn. The corn cup was terrible. I couldnt get myself to eat more than 4 bites and that was forcing myself to. It was like they put everything in the back that was about to go out of date into this tiny cup with corn and mayonnaise and then added as many limes as they could fit into the cup. The tacos werent bad. Definitely wouldnt recommend or come back unless you get lucky and only have to wait 10 minutes some how.

Yelp
I drove all the way from Spring to try this place out and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Flautas and the Quesabirria Taco combo. Both items were very flavorful and they were not skimpy on the food. The meat is Halal which I feel gave their tacos a better quality from other spots I've tried. I can't wait to return. I would definitely recommend 10/10.

Yelp
Customer service at this location is terrible I didn't even buy anything after the way I was greeted!! I'll removed to just stick to the Katy location

Yelp
They barely speak English and charge you $4 for a water cup....tacos were over priced and flavor was average at best. I will definitely not be coming back. Pretty pricey for what you get.

Yelp
Baby let me tell you! Service AMAZING! Food DELICIOUS! Ambiance BIG CHILL!! If you don't come here idk where you gone go! Hugo gone get you RIGHT!!

Yelp
This place lives up to its name!! Taco Fuego is on fire! Small location (there are four now in the Houston area) but great vibe. Awesome service!! And the food was ridiculously good. My wife had the Flautas with chicken and cheese and they were delicious! - Crispy, flavorful, and topped with lettuce, cilantro, pickled onions, crema, salsa - and all very fresh. I had the cheese crusted burrito with beef fajita. Crazy good! And huge! And did I mention how good it was? Lastly, we sampled the Barria taco. I swear, I sound like a broken record but what are ya gonna do? It too, was really, really good! Needles to say, we will be back asap! There so much more in the menu that looked appealing so we'll take as many trips as needed to try them all. Watch out!! More reviews cometh!! *note: I took a picture of the flautas as well but the camera glitched and the picture blurred and didn't notice until after they had been eaten. Next time then...

Yelp
Leaving a one-star review because we went waited for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes we were told their drink machine is broken. Having a family hungry to eat out, we decided to leave. Place looked nice inside but didn't get a chance to really experience it. We will be back to try the food in the next couple of weeks, and hopefully, everything is up and running.

Yelp
I wanted to try this place out, however I never got the chance. The door says they open at 11am, yet I waited 20 minutes and the door was still locked. Granted, when I arrived at 10:54am, the worker seemed to have just arrived as well. I watched him go inside and lock the door behind him then never came to open shop. I waited at the door for a bit just thinking maybe they just needed a second, and even called to be sure they were open--no answer. As a first impression, I was pretty disappointed. Based off a few of the other comments, I may not try this place out after all :/

The M.

Yelp
I have never once felt the need to write a review before because taste is so subjective but one thing that applies to everyone is how you are treated. I have never been treated so rudely just upon ordering and receiving food in my life. I will never go back here based on the experience alone and can imagine if they want to stay in business they should be a great deal nicer to their customers

Elle S.

Yelp
We came at 4 on a Sunday and couldn't get any service. We even called and no one picked up the phone. We waited 4 minutes until we pulled off and still no one came to see if they had guests. Super unprofessional and they definitely lost a customer.

Alexis P.

Yelp
We had the chicken burrito (devoured before I could get a photo), fuego wrap with brisket, and birria tacos. Everything tasted delicious!

Yelp
Maikel was there in lunch nice guy ! he made a great quesadilla of birria to me it was delicious

Yelp
This location has gone down hill- not sure what is going on. The quality and presentation has taken a drastic decrease. For perspective- the flautas I got should look like the first pic- the second pic is what I got... so disappointing to see this location take a turn for the worst.

Yelp
food is incredible! 100% worth a visit. i saw someone complaining about the price of the cheese crusted burrito, that thing is the size of a toddler! of course it's not taco bell priced!

Yelp
My husband happened to drive by this place because it's located next to a pool supply store he frequents. One day he suggested we give them a try for lunch. Oh my! I am hooked!!!! We thoroughly enjoyed our delicious order. He ordered the street tacos and I ordered the crunch wrap. The next time we ordered, I had the street tacos because my husband raved about them. They did not disappoint!! The combination of semi crunchy corn tortillas, perfectly cooked meat topped with jalapeños, and green chile sauce is to die for! Squeezing lime juice on them made them even juicier and more mouthwateringly delicious! The last time he went in to order and take out, he said the place was packed so it looks like word is getting out on how good this place is! Prices are just abocve average--not severely over priced, but not cheap either. Service is always top notch too. I can't wait to sink my teeth into their tacos again!

Yelp
$15 for a burrito! The Burria was good, but the toppings lacked selection, only 1 type of rice and either feta cheese (which belongs on salads) or mozzarella (which belongs on pizza, not burritos). $6 for elote which amounted to some canned corn that didn't taste great, $3 drink, & $3 queso that was not only a tiny condiment portion but also didn't include chips. Basically $30 after tax for a meal that was extremely lackluster and much better can be had at Freebirds down the street. I wanted to like this place, but it's not worth the bland flavors meeting a sky high price.

Allison D.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Cypress, TX! Birria tacos were spot on with a delicious compote for dipping. Best street corn I've had in the burbs too! Service was fast and the atmosphere was modern and welcoming. We are adding Taco Fuego to our rotation!

Yelp
Awesome tacos. Had two street tacos and Baja shrimp very jealous. Fast friendly service

Markus S.

Yelp
**Cypress Location** Ok... I wanted tacos and googled places nearby. I saw that this location was not only close but newly opened. I tried to call in my order, but this location was not taking phone orders as of yet (Which was ok). I ran up there and when I entered, there were 3 customers already seated (2 had their food and were eating. 1 customer was waiting for their order). There were "3" employees in the cooking area. I was not greeted or even acknowledged for approx 30-45secs until 1 of them said "Be right there". I waited facing them for 2 minutes (during which I observed conversation and laughter) and turned around and waited for another 2 minutes before I finally walked out upset I wasted my time. "Great first-time impression this place had". My family and I support local small businesses but this one gives them all a bad name. NEVER be back and will def not recommend.

Yelp
Showed up when they were suppose to open at 11 am. Doors locked. Guy in the back was cooking but saw us waiting outside. Waited until 11:10 am before coming to the door but he would not open. They were not ready to open. Had to leave. Really bad first impression. Don't know if I will be back. Bad customer service.

Yelp
Food is decent. Street tacos are okay 2/5. Their tamales are good. 3.5/5. Surf&turf burrito 2.5/5. It was stuffed but too salty! Birria tacos & consume 4/5! Service & wait is a little on the slow side 1.5/5. So if you're here for a quick lunch, I would order ahead or come another day. FYI: If you get a can of soda, you can't get a cup of ice to pour in your drink as it's reserved for fountain drink only. We waited 35+minutes for our food the last visit, (6 people ahead of us) and 3 people for 30 minutes. Kind of disappointed with our last 2 visits here. I would recommend giving them a try, but nothing where I would recommend you to go out of your ways.

Sarah B.

Yelp
The food here is pretty decent for being one of the few halal tex-mex places in Houston, yet alone Cypress BUT the service here needs all of God's help. I don't know what the deal is but having a total of 2 people working, one that stays in the back, one that runs back and forth to the front and the kitchen. The recent changes they made were a significant downgrade. Having only 2 people working, and having the chipotle concept of build your own meal is super counterproductive for them. I do miss what they had before because it was simple and straight to the point. I've been here 3 times since the changes have been made and each time I've had to wait an insane amount time every visit and having the prices go up with such slow service is quite upsetting. Again, it's halal tex-mex, you can't find that often so definitely get it a try because it does taste good. The only complaint I have is how slow this place is and how the owner needs to consider increasing staff in order for success.

Loni M.

Yelp
Food is very good. The chicken quesadilla is by far the best thing we had. Flautas were fresh and crispy, and the quesobirria tacos were flavorful and nicely salted without being overly greasy. The consommé and churros were very good as well. The only negative is that there aren't any substantial Latino sides to really round out the entrees, which made this place seem more like a quick snacky bite option than a place you can hit up for a lunch or a dinner. A simple addition of charro beans, black beans, and any kind of rice would make this a much more repeatable stop with my family for meals.

Bobby C.

Yelp
First time visit. Guy behind the counter was very helpful as we figured out what to order. Food was excellent. We had several items, all good. Want to try some others next time. They do need to get a paper menu. The one on the wall is to small and hard to read.

Ale R.

Yelp
Everything was great! I really enjoyed the food, I had horchata, fajita fries, tacos de birria and birria pupusa. All the different flavors come together and make a great combination.

Peter K.

Yelp
It is located in a strip mall with easy access. Ordered the street taco, Texas taco, and quesadilla. The food was good. Can actually taste the flavors. No one spice/sauce overwhelms the other. The ambiance is the small casual restaurant. Service was okay as it was a to go order.
