Here are the best places to eat tacos in Ann Arbor | Eater Detroit

"Located inside the Tienda La Libertad, Taco King has more than a dozen different meat and vegetable options. Those inspired by the delicious tacos can peruse the Latin American grocery section to find all the necessary ingredients for an at-home Mexican feast." - John Reyes

Today i had iftar from this place. I took steak and chicken tacos. It was the worst taco i ever tried. The meat and the chicken were so so dried, no flavours. I thought it was from the bread but when I removed the bread it became worse.

My wife and I stopped by this place on the way back to Columbus from Ann Arbor Michigan, and we didn't really have any expectations. We did not look at reviews, we just looked on Google for food places near us. Well let me tell you that we were surprised by how fresh and authentic the food tasted! This place was so good, and the prices were excellent. I ordered the Pollo Torta, and it was perfect. It had a good amount of meat, and guacamole. Also it had several slices of jalapeño, which were long slices that were almost the length of the sandwich. I thought that was a really good touch. My wife ordered one Pollo Taco and one Chipotle Pollo Taco, and they were so good. However this place prepares their meat is great. The flavor of the chicken was very tasty. Also they may have the best corn tortillas that I have ever tasted. I highly recommend this place is you're looking for some tasty Mexican food without spending much money.

Google
Hard to get more authentic short of a trip to Mexican Town. The tacos were good, but the burrito was simply amazing. They’re also a store where you can get all kinds of authentic products that usually only find in Mexico. No-frills dining area, but the prices are hard to beat.

Google
Food was amazing, and so do the atmosphere here, the owner was very welcoming and the gentleman at the register was awesome and very sweet. I totally recommend their “San Diego Burrito” with Barbacoa marinated meat stuffed with fries and served with their spicy salsa.. Yummy.. They got the most authentic mexican food in town and their grocery shop provides a great variety of produce and products.

Google
Tacos were good as usual. Beef burrito was good but grease in bottom of container made hard to eat. I really do like this place but a few things could improve. The salsa and pinto beans were a little plane. Stick with the carne asada tacos for now...they were great.

Google
I live 80 miles away and I am coming back. Best most authentic food within 100 miles of me. I almost felt like I was back home at Roberto’s in highland and G ave in Chula Vista. Please don’t change.

Google
A mexican grocery: This review is not about their food offering, their menu say. It's just about the fact that they have a little mexican grocery store tucked away in their diner in ann arbor with nopales cactus in a jar or fresh for sale. I use it to help to control acid reflux

Google
Terrible experience. I placed an order on Uber eats, I drive over there for pick up, and then they told me they don't even do that anymore. And then, I asked to use the bathroom, and they said it was closed. So, no food, and I can't even use the bathroom??????? This place is AWFUL. Edit since the owner never takes accountability on anything when you look at other negative reviews: Nope. Burrito bunker is a virtual store that goes through this resturant. If you "don't do it anymore" (what you told me when I went to pick it up) perhaps take it off ubereats. Overall, as an owner, you need to take accountability for negative experiences. Be serious.

Yelp
I stopped in for a quick lunch between errands and got the $1.99 Taco Tuesday special. There are two options for $1.99/each - ground beef and chicken. Both were solid street style tacos with plenty of meat and double-wrapped in a soft tortilla. I like a ton of onion and cilantro, so I asked for extra on the side (friendly service, no complaints - extra toppings not pictured), but it comes with lime and one cup of salsa verde. The salsa was fresh and flavorful with just a bit of spice. The restaurant is located inside an unsuspecting grocery store... You might overlook it at first glance. The grocery portion offers a wide variety of Hispanic items you won't find elsewhere. For a quick and easy, no frills lunch on the go, it's worth giving this place a chance!

Yelp
Good place to get pretty decent burritos/tacos inexpensively. I've never had a bad experience here. Food is always prepared quickly and it's fresh. The San Diego burrito and the wet butrito are my favorites. Staff are nice and work efficiently. This is mostly a to-go spot but there are a few places to sit. It's also a grocery store too which is convenient. I love checking out all the Central American food products lining the shelves. Clean and well lit inside.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic and delicious burritos, tacos, and more, this is the place. I particularly love the deep fried burritos. Not only do they have amazing food, there is also a great selection of groceries. Anytime I'm making Mexican food, this is my grocery stop.

Yelp
In a strip mall that serves as both a grocery store and taco stop. Would have liked it better if it was cleaner, but the tacos were decent. A bit boring with the toppings (lack thereof) and salsa. A pico de gallo would elevate the taco. I had tongue, tripe, and potato and steak. The tripe was fried and was my favorite. It tasted like chiccaron.

Yelp
Don't order delivery, it shows up over an hour late every single time, if it even shows up at all.

Yelp
For me they hover more around a 3.5 but I'm going to round up. Taco King offers later pick up and delivery so we've gone with it a couple of times when we've needed a late meal. Honestly, it's not my favorite Mexican in town but it does the trick for sure. Tacos are hearty and they have a good amount of filling for the price. But generally I find it a little on the blander side. The rice and beans sides in particular are a little underwhelming and not worth getting if they don't come with your meal. My go-tos are the chipotle chicken taco (which has a little bit of a kick but it's not exactly spicy) and the carne asada, which is usually cooked really well but again, underseasoned. Maybe I need to liven up my choices by getting different fillings but I'm a creature of habit. *shrug emoji*. The steak quesadilla is also really generously filled with cheese but I wish it had a bit more oomph with the steak. Churros are awesome! Delivery and pick up is also really quick so you can get your food in a flash. They're part of a market that also has great Latin American foodstuffs, so if you're looking to cook or purchase some snacks, you can get ingredients here too!

Yelp
Nice People / Very FAST / and it's Halal, no pork here. It inside of a Mexican grocery store.

Yelp
Taco King is one of the best kept secrets of Ann Arbor. It's delicious, cheap, and authentic. I love the San Diego burrito (made with fries). My husband loves everything, particularly their hot sauces - beware, they are HOT. Another cool thing about Taco King is that it's located inside a small Hispanic grocery store. It's fun to stroll the few aisles while waiting for our food to be prepared. They have a wide variety of spices, drinks, and food that aren't available at the large grocery stores (Meijer, Kroger, etc.). Highly recommend giving Taco King a try!!

Yelp
I'm originally from Cali and have been craving a Mexican breakfast burrito for the longest! I ordered a side of chips & salsa, and the breakfast burrito with chicken. I'm impressed by the audacity this restaurant has to call this a breakfast burrito! At first, I thought there was no way they got my order right. But after further inspection they actually did get it right! They must put half an egg in there, just for design. You could barely see it and you definitely couldn't taste it. Also, I've never had a Mexican breakfast burrito with it containing 80% of rice. I can 100% say that I will wait until I'm back in Cali to have another breakfast burrito!

Yelp
Unassuming place from the outside, but it has great food. It is no frills, but it is good. It is located in a small grocery store and I looked around a bit after I ordered. I was really happy to find a huge selection of dried chilis for purchase. When I make homemade chili, I make the chili powder from scratch; which requires dried chilis. I can't find them in the suburban grocery stores around town, so I am thrilled to know I can find them here. This place also delivers, so either stop in or oder online. It is definitely worth it.

Yelp
The place is basically located in a grocery store where you can get all the latin american stuff. Ordered chicken Burrito and free horchata for yelp check in and my friend got 2 chicken tamales which costed us $12.71. Horchata was Just ok. Burrito was also average. Pros: --------- Quick Service Decent Prices Latin America Grocery available Free Drink or Chips for Yelp check In Free Parking Clean Lot of Food Options close by Cons: --------- None to me

Yelp
Absolutely the best Mexican food I have ever eaten!!! I normally don't enjoy most Mexican food but this was outstanding. I got the burrito and might I say it was delicious if I could I would give this place 10 stars but I cant so it gets 5. I recommend this restaurant to EVERYONE! (Salsa is very spicy)

G D.

Yelp
On some days they're slow, they're certainly not high brow, their online ordering has at times been disorganized (maybe it has improved?), but their chorizo burritos are always excellent - maybe 4.5 stars.
google avatar

Christian H.

Yelp
Reliable, kind, and delicious. Taco king is my go to joint for a California burrito in Michigan.
google avatar

Daron D.

Yelp
I come here because I do work on the area from time to time. It's like a Mexican corner store that sells Mexican food to me. I have had there chipotle chicken taco (pretty good with some flavor), regular chicken taco (bland), chorizo taco (really good, one of the better ones in the area), and the steak taco (also on the bland side). Overall there are better places to get tacos/Mexican food in the area but it's not bad and I think this place stays open a little later then those other places.

Yelp
I've been hustled, scammed, bamboozled, hoodwinked, and lead astray. I'm originally from Southern California. I decided to try Taco King and ordered "chilaquiles". Instead, I was served several days-old, stale chips, with an assortment of toppings that looked real but tasted like imitations of what they should've been. Also, there was no sauce. None. Chilaquiles has sauce. Where was the sauce. I also ordered a "potato taco" which ended up being flavorless fries under a bed of flavorless cheese. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I couldn't even eat my dinner. Wish I could give 0 stars.

Yelp
Found these guys on eat 24 today and ordered delivery. I ordered the king meal with a burrito and two tacos and some chips/guac. Now let me start by saying that I ordered this because I tend to eat....a lot.. After eating my chips and guacamole, I moved on to the tacos which were both corn tortillas..one chicken chipotle and the other fish. Both of them tasted great, there was some red chili pepper sauce that came on the side that added a bit of heat. It also had black beans and Mexican rice. Now after eating these two and all of my chips...i was full. I actually couldn't eat my burrito until a few hours later. The burrito which also comes with beans and rice was also good. It was 20$ well spent. Delivery was fast as well.

Jenica A.

Yelp
Food quality decent though the customer service aspect is definitely lacking. Requested additional salsa and it wasn't a pleasant interaction, spent $40+ and had to explain why I wanted additional sauce, was even willing to pay for additional though the extra banter about desiring extra sauce is ridiculous. Will take my business and money elsewhere.

Yelp
I've been on a personal quest to try all the Mexican and South American food spots in the area. This place's food is solid but the REAL star is the grocery store attached to the restaurant. It's one of the few places in the area that carries all the speciality goods that I miss. I always order some food and then browse the shop while I wait. I wish I would have discovered this place much sooner!
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
The best combo and tacos around. Hot, fresh and so tasty! I travel to the area frequently and this is now my go to place to eat.

Yelp
The restaurant has been inside Tienda La Libertad for some time, but recently has decided to branch out and have their own identify. I have been to Taco King twice now and tried almost all of their taco's. You can order at the counter or grab a table and someone will come to you to take the order... the taco's are only $1.50 and three should be sufficient for one person, but if you are really hungry, get four. I order Al Pastor, Carnitas and Carne.... these are my favorites... I had their lamb taco... it tastes almost like beef... my friends had the beef tongue... I prefer to stay with meats that's not from inside the animal :) They have two kinds of salsa - red and green... the red is the hotter of the two... the guacamole is excellent. I usually get the 16oz with the chips and it'll be all gone by the time I done.... I had their tamales, they have two kinds... one made with banana leafs and the other the traditional corn husk... both were good... couldn't tell the differences in taste, the banana leaf costs's more. As for drinks, I go with the Mexican soda pop... I only get the pineapple, but some day will try the other flavors!

Yelp
Sometimes, it's impossible to divorce the ambiance/aesthetic of a restaurant from the quality of the food. This is one of those restaurants where I can't isolate one from the other. I adore Taco King. It's equal parts Mexican supermarket (filled with imported candy, drinks and tchotchkes), hole-in-the-wall diner, and authentic Mexican eatery. The seating area (which isn't particularly expansive; we're talking two long tables and three or four individual tables) is hidden behind a few mercy racks. The walk way from the door to the counter is small and narrow. It's adorably quaint and vaguely sketchy (in the most endearing way). The food is wonderful. I ordered a taco salad. The black beans were fresh, the different constituent parts of the salad layered just right, and the shell extra crispy. The chips and salsa that accompanied it were delicious as well. Highly recommend this. It's a very charming place.
google avatar

Eliana S.

Yelp
Decent, pretty close to authentic but there was a bay leaf in my burrito, the barbacoa was dry, and they didn't give a lot of meat to begin with. Prices are good for the large portion size. So on the overall it's meh, wouldn't mind eating here again but there's better Mexican food around the area.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
These tacos were absolutely delicious. There are a variety of choices (as tame as the shredded chicken, or as adventurous as the beef tongue or tripe), and they give you a very substantial amount of meat on all tacos. Also, the burrito is $3-$4 than it is at Chipotle, if not as large almost as large, and way tastier. If you're picking up, Taco King is located in a little Latin@ store, so you get to pick up your platano chips or tamarindo candy if you desire. Everyone is super friendly. I plan on coming back soon!
google avatar

Milton B.

Yelp
Firstly, I am from south Texas. I've been craving Mexican food for weeks now while on an extended business trip. Overall, the burritos and tacos were decent. I also ordered a side of refried beans hoping they were homemade. Nope, I can tell they are canned Rosarita brand.
google avatar

Candice M.

Yelp
I went here for the first time - inside is really cool, didn't realize it is also a grocery store which will come in handy next time we want to cook authentic Mexican foods. The interior is a little dingy but that didn't really bother me. I was just there seeking some good Mexican. I ordered the burrito w/beef. It was decent however the beef wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped. I think had I opted for the spicy chicken or shredded chicken I would have liked it better. Overall I think it was more of a poor choice on my part as I am not a huge fan of beef unless it is ridiculously flavored - so I made the wrong meet choice. I will be back again, probably for the tacos or quesedilla

Yelp
I bypassed this place for years, but one day a curious perusal of their menu on Yelp brought me to one of the greatest loves of my life: the San Diego burrito. Now I drive half hour one way from Ypsi strictly to get one (and tacos for my wife). I always get cordial if not overtly friendly service, and there's never gristle in my meat. I usually get takeout but recommend you at least experience eating in once so you can have it hot and stare at the beaaauuuutiful iguana mural they have on the wall. Oh, and go with the hot salsa if you can handle it.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
This is my favourite places in the little 'Mexican town' area of AA. Very reasonable prices, and lots of taco options to choose from. Don't let the hole in the wall atmosphere of the dining area dissuade you! I had almost everything from the menu so far, and non of it disappointed. A big fan of the Chorizo and Barbacoa tacos, as well as the egg & Chorizo (may have the name wrong..) Shop in the same area is quite fun, and can get hard to find seasonings and chillies there much cheaper than other places. I have no complaints about the delivery service either.

Aleah C.

Yelp
Don't order the chips they are usually stale. Burrito was pretty good & the churros are great.
google avatar

Anis J.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant. For almost 4 years , People there has been very nice. My wife loves chimichanga burrito with chredded chicken.MY FAVORITE MEAL San Diego burrito with Chipotle chicken . They have house drink named horchata so sweet and cold. The churros is so yummy !!!salsa is off the hook Omg !!!! The delivery driver is so awesome n nice n polite..thank you Taco king !!!!
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
#1 The food is great #2 The rice is not vegetarian (made with chicken stock) #3 They sell a "Veggie Burrito" with the non vegetarian rice. Buyer beware. #4 Again, the food is great if you are not a vegetarian.
google avatar

Vania M.

Yelp
Taco King has been consistently solid. Their burritos are stuffed with meat, rice, beans pico de gallo, and sour cream. Their guacamole is delicious! Their chile relleno isn't battered and fried, resulting in a fresher tasting dish. We much prefer their food over Chela's, and will continue to order from here when we want traditional Mexican food. Pro tip: get their churros. They fill them with dulce de leche, and they are stellar!
google avatar

Allen L.

Yelp
This place has changed dramatically. Gone are the friendly owners and staff; along with the excellent tacos. Seem to have been replaced by some grumpy owners that barely say a word to any of the customers and the food is not even close to what it was. Grocery selection is still strong.
google avatar

Jeffery L.

Yelp
I've been searching for a California burrito ever since I left San Diego for grad school. I've found my holy grail at Taco King, I'm going to cry. It has all he essentials, the guac, the pico, the fries (not the bs waffle fries that they use at BTB), and the carne asada (not the mystery cartilage meat at BTB). I hope this place never closes down. As an update, I'm docking a few stars. The food is still good, but they charged me $3 for pico when it was supposed to be $1 and didn't acknowledge their mistake when I mentioned it.
google avatar

Benny B.

Yelp
Super tasty tacos (chicken) and burrito (Asada). It's kid friendly. The green and red salsa's take it up to 5 stars. Super good! I'm a salsa stickler. Very authentic.
google avatar

Sonia A.

Yelp
Great Food, Wonderful service! and unique selection of groceries that you only find here. The owner is super nice.

Suhas C.

Yelp
Suprisinhly very good for cheap and basic food. All the ingredients, rice, beans, etc. are tasty. I would recommend getting regular burrito + chips/guac side vs. upgraded burrito (unnecessary fried and small guac side). They give a lot of chips / portion sizes are good for the price. I'd give it a 4 because I'm not dissatisfied with anything. Guac is a bit expensive and taco portions are good for the price. Ordered: chimichanga burrito with medium guac and chips on side with churro and chicken chipotle taco. (Would just order reg burrito and add free sour cream, hot sauce, salsa, etc and get crunch+guac from extras) I would recommend coming here to look at the grocery store as well, lots of cool snacks and sweets.
google avatar

Yelp
Another yelper from SAn Diego "Alicia S." said exactly how I felt when I found this place. Born and raised in so. Cal and having lived in San Diego for over 10 years, I've had really good authentic Mexican food. I'm always craving Mexican food. I've tried almost every Mexican place in Ann Arbor and taco king reminds me of food from Mexico, los Angeles and San Diego. The San Diego burrito is called California burrito in San Diego. Its one of the most popular burritos in San Diego. It's spot on. So good. Try it.
google avatar

Jules W.

Yelp
I always love going here for quick delicious tacos and other eats. I love the menu and the atmosphere is okay, but the tacos Mmmm yummy. I haven't been able to order everything on the menu just yet, but I'm ready. I recommend this place, I promise you will be back for more.
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
Love the food! One of my favorite places to get Mexican food. Authentic and the prices are great.
google avatar

Beck E.

Yelp
Was a little confused upon entering that Taco King is just an extension of a grocery store, but after I sat down, that added a bit of quirky charm. It took a bit of time to order because the guy at the register was taking a complicated phone order, but the service was very friendly, and the food was really good! The bf got a taco salad with tripe (yum!), which was more food than it looked like. It came with tortilla chips, too! I got three vegetarian tacos: King Taco (yum!), Mushroom, and Potato (really just chopped up French fries). The potato taco I could have done without, but the other two were great! Hoping to return soon to try more menu items!
google avatar

P B.

Yelp
Huge fan! Come in, order the tacos (al pastor), and by the time they're made, you can get some Mexican groceries. Their food is great, I love all of their tacos, and tortas (especially the egg-chorizo one) and their San Diego burritos. The flan and the churros are also great. My only beef is that they keep changing the guys at the counter, and they are often unaware of the menu or even common Mexican terms.

Stanley D.

Yelp
Only get the tacos. They're pretty good. However, I think a Teriyaki chicken sub in a pita at Subway is more of a torta than the torta I received. The chicken was microwaved, the bread not toasted, the guacamole filled with bits of avocado skin, and the vegetables were so tasteless that I couldn't tell if I was eating lettuce or onion. The nachos were pretty upsetting as well; OK chips from a bag but that's okay because it's the brand of chips I've been waiting for 7-11 to start stocking again. The cheese tastes like melted cheese whiz mixed with microwaved cheese whiz and a sprinkle of dried milk. Also, all the cheese came in a separate styrofoam to-go box and wouldn't come out of the container, almost as if it was trying to spare me from itself.
google avatar

molly d.

Yelp
Decent Mexican hole in the wall. Enjoyed my fluffy pork tamales but this place is all about the tacos. Really solid vegetarian taco options, including mushroom and zucchini. Potato tacos are made with French fries. Beans and rice aren't worth bothering with as a side order - both are bland and the beans aren't refried; they taste like they just got dumped from a can. Recommend you stop by if you're craving tacos.
google avatar

Kennedy D.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. Located in a little convenience store with Latin American products. I liked that there were so many bottles drink selections! They have an extensive menu - I chose three tacos. Many choices and customization options. They were delicious, authentic, and fairly priced. Will return!
google avatar

Gwen N.

Yelp
Ordered delivery and had never had Taco King before. It was so good! The steak tacos were flavorful and allowed to be simple in their flavors (just cilantro and lime). Yum! The side of tie and beans were generous and the side of hot sauce had a pleasant heat and interesting smoke flavor. The shredded beef burrito was also super delicious! The portions are generous and price affordable.
google avatar

Yelp
I grew up and went to college in New England. I always thought guys from Southern California were dicks when they said you haven't had good Mexican food until you've been to Mexico or SoCal. Kind of like New Yorkers saying you can't get good pizza outside of the boroughs. Grandstanding dicks. But with Mexican food it's actually pretty close to true. I hadn't had good Mexican food until I spent months getting to know San Diego and Tijuana. Just another universe. So I was happy to find Taco King in Ann Arbor. Very few people think tacos when they think of Ann Arbor, but these are at least as good as anything you can get anywhere else, and at comparable prices. And the grocery store attached has everything you could want.
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
This place is awful! Visiting from out of town and ordered on grub hub, they didn't order on time, couldn't find the apartment had to go out looking for them. The food was cold, the chips were soggy and they didn't even have any of the nacho ingredients on it... it looked and tasted nasty... awful customer service... you make a complaint and then they call you and harass you... awful business, awful food... save your money and time and don't bother or go to Taco Bell trust me Taco Bell is better than the crap we got from here.
google avatar

Tristan K.

Yelp
i stationary taco truck. delicious Mexican food i return here very often, service is quick and friendly and they offer many authentic mexican ingredients.

Yelp
I've been here twice now to try both the Mexican food and Chinese food. The beef and broccoli was just okay nothing fantastic and I had the so called burrito.... The burrito was very small!! Pretty much kid size and for the taste of the burrito it wasn't good at all. If you're looking for a burrito avoid this place for the $6.50 it's CRAZY small. The overall cleanliness is great and the employe is very nice.
