The Best Burritos In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Aside from being a solid setup for 24 games of tic-tac-toe, the crosshatch griddle marks on Taco Max’s burrito ensures prime crispiness. And this Albany Park burrito takes structural integrity seriously—it even enlists a duo of toothpicks for additional reinforcement. There’s a clear division between the sections of crispy charred meat and the layer of sour cream and vegetables, so plan a precise angle of attack to get it all in one chomp. Even a little jaw stretching will go a long way to help the flavors and textures come together in the ideal burrito bite." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen, adrian kane

The Best Restaurants In Albany Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"A neon “Love At First Bite” sign hangs above some tables at this casual spot. But unlike other restaurants that seem designed for photo ops, you might actually fall in love with the Mexican dishes at Taco Max. Their well-seasoned and nicely charred meats like al pastor and arrachera taste great whether loaded into tacos or chunky burritos. And their breakfast torta—with scrambled eggs, chorizo, and bean spread sandwiched between pillowy telera bread—is something we’d like to wake up next to every morning." - john ringor, adrian kane

On the Grid : Ixcateco Grill

"Upscale, authentic Southern Mexican food in a casual BYOB atmosphere by an ex- Topolobampo chef and Rick Bayless protégé? Count us in. Chef Anselmo Ramirez opened Ixcateco in 2015 using locally sourced organic or sustainably raised ingredients resulting in a seasonally changing menu. Moles are the specialties here and the Pollo En Mole Negro is one of our favorites. Great vegetarian options as well and also open for brunch on the weekends." - Bark Design

Google
ordered take out and after getting home realized the order was carelessly wrong. three tacos with nothing on them besides the meat? then the other 3 specified no cilantro - they ALL had cilantro on them & missing onions that were supposed to be included. 2 stars because the meat tasted fine.

Kyle

Google
I'm not sure what the correct star rating is. The food has been consistently great for years, but in the last couple months deliveries are getting later and later. If you can't handle delivering Grubhub orders on your own just use their drivers. (Quick edit: it was 3 stars until they stopped answering their phone)

Google
I’ve never dined in person, but I’ve been ordering delivery from here once a month for the past couple of years and the food has managed to stay consistent and yummy! It’s safe to say this has been my favorite spot for tacos. The sauces are full of flavor and the tacos are always stuffed full.

Tommie B.

Google
The food was delicious. I had a three-taco dinner featuring arrachera, fried fish, and tinga chicken tacos. The arrachera steak was tender and moist, the fried fish had a comfortable level of heat and was accompanied by plenty of slaw, and the chicken was juicy, although I think it could have used a bit more seasoning. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, and the rice and beans were a great complement!

Jeremy G.

Google
We’ve always loved Taco Max for its consistently excellent food, and last night was no exception—though there were a few hiccups. The steak tacos were as delicious as always, and the portion sizes are a great value. However, the rice had peas and carrots that were still frozen, which was a bit odd. We’re not sure why vegetables are used in the rice, as it doesn’t seem to fit the dish. Additionally, the chips were unfortunately quite stale. Hopefully, this was just an off night for the kitchen. We’re excited to try the new Lakeview location when it opens and hope for an even better experience there.

Google
I frequently order delivery and have always been satisfied (an understatement). I typically get the 3 taco dinner with lomo & arrachera, and it comes with a variety of salsas and plenty of onion/cilantro. It’s a lot of food with the rice and beans, and I could probably split it to make two meals, but where’s the fun in that?

FDM

Google
Food is great, the amount of meat is enough. The place is clean and the server is friendly and helpful. Good luck in the future!

Martha D.

Google
This restaurant is near my house. The tacos of steak ( carne asada)are delicious. The meat is juicy, seasoned to perfection. They include 3 types of hot sauce, red, green, and black hot sauce. The agua de horochata is perfectly made, with a pinch of cinnamon. Definitely a must try, it’s one of my favorite places for tacos. And it will become one of your favorite places too. They, also have tortas, enchiladas, and other Mexican famous dishes.

Yelp
An absolute banger for tacos. The portions are huge and full of flavor. Your food comes with chips and various salsas all of which are quite tasty. Everything on the menu was also super affordable. Staff was friendly and the restaurant is clean and updated. If you're planning on tipping, bring cash or use a debit card, their credit system doesn't allow for tips. Since I live down the street this will probably be my new regular taco spot!
google avatar

Jazz S.

Yelp
We ordered delivery from here and it was really good! I live near Pilsen so usually get my Mexican fix from there but this was comparable if not better than most spots! The sauces it comes with are super flavorful and there's a lot of options on the menu. There's an extensive breakfast Mexican menu that is served all day. Recommend the burritos and the main entrees.

Yelp
We used to order from the Taco Max location on Elston probably once a week, so we were heartbroken (yeah yeah I know first world problems) when it closed. But the Montrose location is the same great food and not too much further away! We haven't eaten inside at this location, but regardless of takeout or delivery, the food is always ready super quick and the delivery driver is so nice. Highly recommend the veggie and fried fish tacos. Steak nachos are huge and delish! Choripan, also so good. My picky eater nieces and nephews love their quesadillas. Okay so there's nothing I don't like, even the burgers are amazing. But importantly, this is the best drunk meal you'll ever have, so keep Taco Max in mind after your next night out!
google avatar

Jenn R.

Yelp
Staff is always wonderful and the food is delicious. The chips and salsa can be addictive!
google avatar

Lateef A.

Yelp
The location on Elston has closed down, so we decided to try out this location. It really left a lot to be desired. The service was just okay. This is one of those places where you order upfront and then they bring you the food. I couldn't help but notice that when the food was brought over, it wasn't exactly hot. Which kind of gave the impression that the only thing fresh is the meat fish. Everything else tasted like it had been prepared earlier that day and was just sitting out. I ordered the deep fried tacos. That's something that you're really have to have fresh otherwise, it's all soggy. My meal was pretty inedible, I took two bites of my taco and was done. I made a mental note that I wouldn't be back. I did really enjoy the cucumber water/juice. It was pretty tasty and I ended up finishing that and taking another to go. The food, I left behind and didn't asked for it to be packed up. Lastly, this might just be a me thing. But they could consider wiping down the bottles every once in a while. The bottles of sauce are community style but when you touched them they were all slimy and sticky. Chips and salsa were good. My friend did like his tacos but also agreed that he wouldn't come back due to the food being served cold and we dined in.
google avatar

Dejan B.

Yelp
It wasn't inedible but it wasn't good. I was hungry to try something with good reviews here that I could order for delivery from the DD application. After some searching I found this place. It had decent reviews on DD and delivery prices were very cheap and when I cross-checked reviews on here also were good (4.5 out of 5). I ordered the three taco dinner and got the cucumber-lime drink people were talking about. The DD driver took forever to deliver though it was around rush hour and he got stuck behind a freight train. When I picked up the bag I saw that the drink was packaged horribly. It was in a plastic cup with a lid. However, it should have been wrapped with plastic or in a couple of plastic bags or something that wouldn't spill all over. All it was the plastic cup in a paper bag. Half of the drink was all over the food and everything in the bag holding everything. Thankfully the drink didn't seem to have gotten into the styrofoam container of food. Food seemed decently sized and prepared with decent ingredients. However, the taste just wasn't there. Meat in the tacos was plain and tasteless even piled high with toppings/ingredients. I won't be ordering from them again and I warn others not to make my mistake. 3 Taco Dinner

Yelp
Taco Max Mexican Grill is truly a hidden gem! I visited the restaurant around 9 p.m. on a Wednesday with two other people and we were instantly seated and helped. We ordered a Max Torta (a sandwich-like entree with a bean spread, cheese, potatoes and cabbage), a Pollo Burrito and two Lechon Tacos. The food was out within 10-15 minutes and was delicious! The serving sizes are huge for the price too. Our server was incredibly friendly and tentative. I would certainly visit again and recommend to others.
google avatar

Rochell M.

Yelp
Food and variety of salsas were delicious! Unfortunately the Elston location will be closed soon. It will be missed.

Veronica M.

Yelp
Do I even need to say anything??? Like be so fvcking for real right now? Mold on a taco??? Horrible service. Best believe the health department is getting a call after this
google avatar

Manny R.

Yelp
Wow! Amazing find in the local neighborhood. Great food, friendly staff, and a warm environment.

David C.

Yelp
Never again will I go there for tacos! The tacos were okay but the service was the worst. There are two young ladies that give the worst customer service. I looked up reviews to find out if others have experienced the same bad service and sure enough others felt the exact same way.
google avatar

Andrye A.

Yelp
We came to this Taco spot randomly because this location is closer to my apartment then the Elston location. These tacos are one of the best tacos in Chicago. We get the fried fish tacos and the veggie tacos and they are simply full of flavor. I do not eat meat but I can imagine that they are delicious. If you are on the north side of Chicago this taco max is a stop you need to make on any Taco Tuesday.

Cady G.

Yelp
I ordered a steak taco dinner and an horchata! The food was delicious..i was skeptical of ordering because I had previously been ordering from the Elston ave location and wasn't sure how their quality control was changing with them moving to their alternative location, I was half a block out of their delivery radius and the man taking my order made an exception and still delivered my food! AMAZING BUSINESS!!

Benita B.

Yelp
Very tasty delivery was fast. The best steak tacos. I usually get the taco dinner, and they have really good rice and beans along with their sauces.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
100% a hidden gem... WOW!!!! My husband took me here for lunch and OMG super impressed! My husband got the breakfast skillet and I got the 3 taco dinner. My Carne asada and al pastor tacos were top notch. The streak was actual steak, arrachera meat, not your fatty street tacos. And the al pastor was excellent. But the cochinita taco was my favorite.... The picketed onions and habanero sauce took this taco to a new level. Hands down, my new favorite place.

Nicki D.

Yelp
Tacos de asada are amazing, tostadas are on point, and the enchiladas verde dinner is out of this world! Service is always incredibly quick, so sad to see their Elston location going, but hope to stop at the Montrose location for pickup on my way home from work for now on.

S C.

Yelp
Listen I legit called this place mid eating to tell Them this food was amazing . I've never done that, I'm so used to getting disappointing food since the pandemic and this was such a nice surprise. Everything was great & fresh it really made my day. I took pics of my half eaten food for This review lol. Order from here, especially if you like your steak to have a charr grilled flavor.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
Very good and consistent. I order the chicken burrito and my son orders steak tacos. Overall, very satisfied. Occasionally some issues with the special requests but still tasty.
google avatar

Ang E.

Yelp
Taco Max is the most reliable restaurant for take out. The person taking the phone order ALWAYS repeats the order back to you, so there's never a problem with getting anything wrong. And the food is delicious. I used to get their amazing torta milanesa before my diet. Now that I'm eating lighter, I get tinga tacos. SO good. The chicken is perfectly shredded and spicy. Good portions too. My spouse loves the steak burrito and tacos. We order from them about once a week. It's the obvious default answer when we don't know what to have for dinner.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Outstanding neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Favorites are the veggie tostada, the tacos al pastor , the Ensenada tacos and the tilapia tacos. Good accompaniments and salsas, desserts and drinks (horchata and jamaica).
google avatar

Celina G.

Yelp
I had their veggie burrito and it did not disappoint! Big size and packed with flavor, and not just overflowing in cheese and sour cream like I've found many places to be. I also appreciated that the tortilla was toasted. The missing star is just bc I find their salsas to just be "hot" but don't have real flavor to them and I always find myself wishing I had another salsa to pour on the burrito. They also have great French fries!

Jo C.

Yelp
GREAT tacos. Their Al pastor are so good, and I love their cucumber lime drink. Cute restaurant as well :) both locations are consistently good.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Great value and great taste! Stopped by to get a breakfast burrito for takeout! Enough for two meals for only $8.99. Even my boyfriend couldn't finish his. Fast service and easy parking. Will definitely be going back
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
4.5 stars - great burrito, made quickly. Price was good for size of burrito - it's a 2 mealer for me. Taste was excellent. Will be back to this place regularly.

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Delicious all the way around! Prices are cheap for the quality and amount of food! Service is great. I would definitely recommend if you're looking for a great meal and it's BYOB!

Bepos1luv O.

Yelp
BYOB. Good food and good customer service. We had Tacos De Cochinita Pibil, Al Pastor, and Arrachera with Jamaica/Hibiscus drink. All was outstanding. If you see it don't go pass without stopping in.
google avatar

Jasmin E.

Yelp
Bad really bad service had the wrong address 3 times and I ask to bring change for a 100 dollar bill they said ok no problem when the driver got here he said no change sad really sad not ordering from here never again

Dave F.

Yelp
Super fast delivery! Had the 3 taco dinner with both the meat and chicken were both very good. The beans and rice were exceptional. Guacamole was one of the best I've ever had. It was our first time trying it and we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Abin V.

Yelp
So excited that this second Taco Max location opened up! This spot is fantastic for tacos, burritos, and tortas. Highly recommend the arrachera. Great for takeout - always quick, high quality, and reasonably priced considering the large portion sizes.
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
Friendly guy behind the counter, super fast service, and the best veggie burrito I've had in a long time. It was loaded with fresh veggies (not rice!), including plenty of spinach and avocado. Very satisfying. Hubby said his torta was perfection -- the meat was perfectly seasoned and delectably crispy. Our flan was very good -- I've had richer flans but I didn't necessarily need a super rich flan tonight, and the flavor was spot on. Yum! We will definitely go back and highly recommend.

Mr Stacy J.

Yelp
order something - you will be happy when you taste it. food was flavorful and delivery was QUICK. prices pretty standard but definitely a good value. another Albany Park gem - we neighbors are fortunate to have so much good food nearby.

Allan B.

Yelp
A good taco/ burrito stars w quality meat and this place so far has the goods .1 star missing for the ambiance, no air so it gets warm when dining in.

Jayleen F.

Yelp
HORRIBLE. My WHOLE plate is FILLED with onions and 3 small pieces of steak, who eats this many onions and why would you not serve more meat than onion? The meat isn't even flavored. I ordered a side of tortillas and of course the didn't give it to me. The beans are disgusting, they aren't even brown I don't know what is going on with this place but do not order the rice and beans and definitely don't order what I ordered. Garcias's restaurant is 8 minutes away and 120% better than whatever this crap is. Absolutely disgusting. Never again.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
I made an order of three tacos dinner and it was delicious and well served! Highly recommend them

Beebe G.

Yelp
Yummy delicious tacos here and my husband is a fan of their cochinita pibil. Staff is very nice. Customer arrive is right on.
google avatar

Carmen R.

Yelp
Stopped in today on our way home -because damn it's wet and cold!- and we were hunnngry. What luck! Fresh (meaning 'warm'-yay!) chips and three salsas served when you sit down, all delicious. My husband ordered taco dinner with three different tacos. Served with cilantro and chopped onion, yellow rice, and beans. I ordered a torta (sandwich) with milanesa de pollo (breaded chicken) and a side of fries. The plates were bright and well presented, the food was hot, and there were some great surprises - cucumber slices and fresh lime on my husband's plate, delicious toasted bun on my torta and the chicken was thick-cut and juicy. Portions were generous - my husband had to work to finish his tacos and I barely finished half of the sandwich (and I can eat!). The fact that five hours later I'm still full should tell you something. We always judge a place by their salsa verde (two here, one molcajete style and one stewed) and their beans (refried is what we tried), so that's why they don't get max stars from me yet: the beans and the verdes were good, no doubt, but not life-changing. *However*, the rice was surprisingly tasty as a side, and the third salsa, which I'm guessing was arbol, was damn good and interesting. The horchata wasn't the real deal, so it was a little sweet, but if that's the one complaint I could muster, and it is, this is definitely a place worth revisiting again and again. Kid-friendly, nice big bathroom, clean and easy to access, parking on the street right in front, OK for small groups, couples, singles. Next time - cochinita pibil! I'm so excited!

Holly V.

Yelp
Delicious food, super fast and efficient delivery. Taco Max always gets it right; we've never had a bad or even mediocre experience. We love the arrachera, breakfasts (skillets and chilaquiles, yum), flautas, and the sauces, esp the smoky one. Tacos always come with a side of sliced limes.

Abby G.

Yelp
Omg so yum! So happy we went tonight. Such simple food but so delicious! Clean open space. Might eat it again tomorrow!

Juan M.

Yelp
The best delicious tacos they are the #1 skirt steak tacos in the neighborhood I love taco max the salsas are amazing

O S.

Yelp
I had the torta de Arrachera. One of the best tortas I've ever had. Will come back again. My wife had the veggie burrito, and as a vegetarian she was extremely pleased. She could tell that it was made with fresh vegetables.
