Taco Palenque - Review - Cedar Park - Austin - The Infatuation

"Austinites who fight the brutal I-35 traffic to drive to San Antonio deserved to reward themselves with a visit to Taco Palenque. If you think this fast food chain is just another Taco Cabana or Taco Bell, well, you're wrong. Taco Palenque serves tightly rolled tacos that are easy to hold in one hand while maneuvering your steering wheel with the other, and if you order just one thing at this drive-thru window, make it a Pirata. These double-wrapped tacos are loaded with refried beans, chunks of fajita beef, and shredded cheddar cheese. Make sure to ask for a container of Taco Palenque’s spicy salsa—it’s tangy and peppery, and makes everything better." - Taylor Tobin

I came by to place a large order of breakfast tacos and unfortunately had a disappointing customer service experience on 8.27 drive-thru. I accidentally paid with my personal card instead of my company card, and I immediately apologized and asked if the transaction could be refunded so I could use the correct card. I was told “no” three times before finally being told a manager would need to be called. When the manager arrived, there was no communication directed toward me, only conversation in Spanish (which I do understand). Eventually the refund was processed, but the interaction felt dismissive. When my order was handed to me at the drive-thru, the young woman didn’t acknowledge me, and when I waited politely to ask for napkins and red sauce, she appeared frustrated and walked away after quickly handing me the bag. The lack of courtesy left me feeling unwelcome. The food itself was excellent — the breakfast tacos were delicious, the tortillas, so good! I had even planned to order lunch for my team all week while we are working across the street. However, because of how I was treated, I decided not to place any further orders, and I shared my experience with my team as well. Respectful and professional service goes a long way, especially when the product is good. Had my situation been handled with basic courtesy and understanding, I would have gladly continued to order breakfast amd lunch all week.

Taco Palenque never disappoints with its fresh, flavorful Tex-Mex favorites. The fajita and pirata tacos are always a hit—juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying. The salsa bar is a major plus, offering a great variety of bold, authentic flavors. Big shoutout to Jacqueline for her excellent service—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. And don’t skip dessert—the cheesecake is absolutely delicious and the perfect sweet ending to the meal!

Google
Best quesadillas hands down. If you have never been to one you must go. Dine in for their sauce bar and chips.

Google
I love eating at Taco Palenque. The menu has a wide variety of Mexican food to eat. The Al Pastor actually has pineapple. I love their sirloin burrito. The Mexican staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The place is never overly crowded. Taco Palenque has the best Mexican food in the Austin metro.

Google
I came in for breakfast around 8:30 Mon morning. The restaurant is clean. The girl at the counter was very friendly and had service with a smile. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros plate. It was fresh and delicious. They have a salsa bar with fresh salsas, chips, and pico de gallo etc. Very appealing. No one is standing around I see them keeping busy by wiping the windows etc. Highly recommend.

Google
Awesome food. I really like the quesadilla and the sirloin tacos are top notch. My wife had the enchiladas special and said it was the best Mexican fast food she's had in a long time.

Google
we ordered through the drive through, and everything went smoothly until we paid and got our food. we weren't given a receipt, a large horchata, or 1 of our sides of guacamole (not cheap). then the workers still had the nerve to argue with us after fishing their copy of the receipt out of the kitchen, even after it clearly showed we paid for those items. im definitely not going back, even if the food was good.

Google
I don't know why we've waited so long to try this place!?!? So delicious 😋 it's a little upscale Taco Cabana if you ask me! Hubs and I both wanted the Panchos(beef fajita nachos) boy did we get what we paid for! Start with one to share! They have a tiny chips and salsa bar, The chips and green salsa 🤌 I also ordered a small fideo that we shared and that was yummy too! I think we paid $34-$40 for two. They are NOT stingy with their meat!!! We will be back! Now if only I knew how to say the name! 😂

Yelp
Stopped by again today and tried the quesadilla al pastor. That's a good deal at $4.99 for two minis plus a drink! Also had the fish tacos...always tasty; but I sure wish they had something sweet in the pico or salsa a la Cabo Bob's. Also, don't care at all for cilantro, easier to avoid at Cabo, but not the end of the world. Iced tea is always a toss-up. Today's "sweet" tea wasn't at all sweet. Checked the "unsweet" as well to see if maybe they switched...nope. BUT...all in all, a decent value and the food is tasty! By the bye, the chips are a little chunky/crunchy for me to gobble down. Maybe that's a good thing. I think I'll get a party pack of taquitos for the staff at the gym where I play Pickleball...to introduce some more folks to Palenque. This is for the 620 location in Austin...Cedar Park is smaller but still OK.

Yelp
Horrible service !!! Food over priced !! Would not make these people rich on bad food.

Yelp
Pulled into the drive-thru because, well, errands don't run themselves, and left with a $19 bowl of mediocrity. I got the menudo with flour tortillas, and while the tortillas were decent (not fooling anyone that they're homemade), the menudo initially tasted like someone forgot to invite flavor to the party. Thankfully, a lemon wedge, a sprinkle of cilantro, and a healthy dose of salsa came to the rescue, turning "meh-nudo" into something I could respectably eat. Portion-wise, it was a bit on the smaller side, though the tripe count was solid--if that's your jam. But the $19 price tag for menudo and a medium soda? That one hit harder than the lemon juice. Service was friendly, even if English wasn't fully in their wheelhouse. They got my order right, though, so no complaints there. Overall, 3/5 stars: it's edible, it's an experience, but maybe hit the ATM first because your wallet's gonna feel it.

Yelp
Correction: The Taco Tuesday special is not a BOGO, rather reduced prices on select tacos.

Yelp
Delicious food plus drive thru can't be beat. Our favorite drive-thru whenever we are near one of the several locations, this plate is the Chipotle Chicken, steamed veggies and rice plate. Always hot and fresh, super spicy salsa and we get the side of charro beans. This plate comes with irresistible flour tortillas. Quick service in the drive-thru, they provide everything in the bag (forks, napkins and plenty of salsa) and with a smile! Clean parking lot with plenty of parking for a quick lunch in the car.

Yelp
Best way for me to think about this place is a more Mexican and less Americanized version of Taco Bell. Corn Tortillas were great. They rival being homemade. They wrap two around the taco but you only really need one to enjoy the taco. Of course to prevent the premature ripping due to the succulent savory goodness dripping out, constructing the taco with two tortillas makes perfect sense. Staff were very friendly from the moment we walked in around 11a. Wasn't rush at all because we were in the middle of breakfast and lunch service - though I imagine it can get packed real quick because the food is very good! Loved enjoying the different complimentary salsa bar. Chips had great taste and density! Will be back for sure.

Yelp
Taco Palenque started in the valley and is now opening location around the Austin area. They offer fast food options of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, abd other Tex mex items. They have a full complimentary salsa bar with any purchase. One thing that surprised me about this place was it wasn't cheap for what we got and the quality of food. I spent over $40 for the both of us. For the quality of food that you get for the price I will definitely be going somewhere else. The service was good and the restaurant was clean and presentable.

Yelp
I will never return to this location. Tonight's visit was a disaster! After I paid, I checked our receipt and noticed the order was wrong (not sure why they don't repeat the orders back to you at the drive thru - I probably should have asked before pulling up to the window), we notified them but they said they had already made the food. So I opted to be nice and just take the food. When I got home, I was frustrated to see the tacos were less than half way full, with only a tablespoon of meat in each one. This sadly is not the first time this has happened to me- but it will be the last!

Yelp
I hate giving crappy reviews unless the service is really crappy. I used to go to Taco Cabana all the time for my Mexican takeout. I grew up in San Antonio and always love them. Until they started screwed up every order that I made. I was thrilled when taco Palenque opened in Round Rock, and now in Cedar Park. This gave me a slightly higher, priced, but much better quality, takeout, Mexican food. This afternoon I stopped by for a quick visit and to place an order. I ordered inside, and there was no line at the counter. There were two tables that were already eating their food. They were clearly not busy, however, somehow I still received an incomplete order. I I thought my order was very simple and it wouldn't get screwed up! I ordered 1 mole enchilada plate. 12 bean and cheese tacos and 1 $5.99 Pirata taco. I looked in the bag when they gave it to me and it looked like everything was complete. I was relieved and drove 30 minutes to get home. When I got home, I counted out the 12 bean & cheese tacos --no problem, order as expected. I saw the mole enchiladas--no problem as expected, but where was the $5.99 Prirata taco?? I know it's always "buyer beware". however, I never had this issue with a previous order at Taco. Palenque. Next time, I will pull everything out of the bag and display it on the table to make sure the order is correct. This is ridiculous. I seriously wonder if Taco Palenque hired staff from taco cabana???? If they would've got a new order correct this would've been a five star review ! :-(

Yelp
We came to eat on a Sunday afternoon and it was not busy at all, but our food was horrible. I don't know who is cooking this food, but it didn't taste like Mexican food at all. The Menudo tasted horrible, and Juanita's Menudo in a can taste so much better so much better don't waste your money. My son said the rice tasted reheated and not freshly made. The fideo tasted like limon just nasty . I wish I could get a refund for the $70 that I spent in this place because it was a waste of my time and I came home hungry .

Yelp
Solid breakfast tacos. They use freshly made tortillas that are thin and tasty. Really like that in a flour tortilla. The Barbacoa taco is excellent. Chorizo and egg taco is also really good. Love their Salsa bar. Good options and plenty of freshly cut onions and cilantro to complement your meal. Service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
The inside is nice. Staff was welcoming. I like their salsa bar and most of the salsas are really good. We came here for a change of pace from our normal taco places. At the end of the day, the tacos are good with the tortillas being a tad chewy. Wish they had more substance to them as we thought the amount of meat was on the skimpy end. I'd classify them as typical and average. Nothing exception but worth a visit.

Yelp
I went by there today to order food. I was ignored. The person in front of me said he waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged. No communication from anyone. The employees were not taking orders. Weird but I eventually left.

Yelp
Heard that the owner of Taco Palenque is the same owner of El Pollo Loco which is a CA Chain. Here is what we ordered: Fajita taco Sirloin taco Barbacoa Taco Matamoros Taco Super Fajita Quesadilla My favorite was the Matamoros. The other tacos were good I just like my tacos to have some toppings. The other tacos simply come with the meat inside the tortilla and you can add your own topping. They do have a variety of salsas, tortilla chips, radish and such on the side as self serve option. The quesadilla was a bit too oily for me. Service at the cedar park location was great. They brought our tacos out first and we waited a while for our quesadilla. They were busy when we went so it may have been forgotten but they did apologize for it when i mentioned it to them that I was waiting for it and they gave us a Tres Leche dessert on the house. I do appreciate this location having a drive- thru option for those lazy days that you just want to grab food and go home. If you crave tacos, try them. We had the street sirloin tacos and it was good. For $11 you do get 4 small street tacos so it wasn't bad to try for taco Tuesday. The ambiance is very much of a chain taco join. But the place was clean and the workers kept cleaning the tables & cleaning the area of the salsa bar.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite fast and tasty places to grab a quick meal. Food is tasty and ordering in to sit is great, you can get your own chips and salsa and toppings at their salsa bar. But ordering to go has been a struggle. Today with both of our street tacos, they didn't give any onions, cilantro, limes or anything. We also got the large queso and was given maybe 10 chips, the brown bag they put the chips in was maybe 1/4 filled. This happens often when ordering to go. Tip: Make sure you ask for toppings and extra chips. Especially for $35 for only 2 orders of tacos and cheese and a drink, I wish I had everything included that should be per the menu.
google avatar

Mariel V.

Yelp
Warning: I ordered one molé enchilada and a beef taco. Had chips and salsa at their unlimited salsa bar. I ate the green creamy salsa and chips. Did not eat anything else after this and five hours or so later- I WAS SO SICK. Throwing up and had cold sweats and was in the bathroom for a while. Unless you want this special experience- come and eat molè and their green salsa here. Fun times! Fast food style ordering. Friendly staff but this bathroom experience is NOT WORTH chancing it at this place. A day later and my tummy still feels sour. Never again!!!

Yelp
Step into Palenque Tacos and prepare for a flavor explosion that will transport your taste buds straight to the heart of Mexico. From the moment you enter, the aroma of sizzling meats and freshly made tortillas envelops you, promising an authentic culinary journey. Pros: Every bite bursts with the perfect balance of spices and textures, showcasing the true essence of Mexican street food. The menu boasts a tantalizing array of options, from traditional favorites like carne asada and al pastor to adventurous creations like shrimp tacos with mango salsa. Each dish is meticulously crafted with the finest ingredients, ensuring a mouthwatering experience with every bite. Cons: The only downside? The wait times can be a bit lengthy, but trust me when I say it's worth every minute of anticipation. Once you sink your teeth into their savory tacos, you'll understand why people are willing to queue up for this culinary gem. Verdict: Palenque Tacos is a must-visit for any food enthusiast craving an authentic taste of Mexico. So good, you'll find yourself coming back for more - maybe even twice in one week, just like I did.next visit I'll wait long enough to take epic pictures lol

Yelp
Great Taco's. Good fixings.. Very much South Texas Goodness. And the street taco's give a Mexico taste.
google avatar

Yelp
The service here was quick, and everyone was very nice. We ordered the two carne Asada taco combo, fajita nachos, and everything was delicious! We will be back! You must give this cute little place a try! Forgot to mention there is a full salsa bar with chips and special toppings.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Taco Palenque and I didn't really have any expectations. However, this place kinda reminds me of a Taco Cabana especially with their salsa/salad/chip bar when dining in. During this visit I ordered two sirloin burritos as it was highlighted as one of their popular items. Placing my order via Uber Eats, I was excited to pick up and feel how the bag felt like there would be a substantial amount of food. However, just know that most of the weight comes from the beans and rice and that the amount of meat and cheese and lettuce isn't as substantial. I also don't know if it is typical, but the meat that we did receive was difficult to chew as it felt like there was lots of connective tissue/fat. The flavor was also fairly subtle but that was easily remedied by the salsas you can get from the salad bar with my favorite being the avocado one, yum! Their chips were also on the thicker side which had a nice bite but I think were flavored with something spicy which made it harder to eat a ton which I guess helps with portion control.

Myriam C.

Yelp
This business has gone downhill in the past few years. Their portions used to be decent and fairly priced. Now, when you order, its almost like they're the ones getting charged for serving you a plate. The plates are not even clkse to what they advertise. Ive ordered plates and if Im lucky I will get a plate that is half the amount of what's on their pictures. Other times its been absolutely terrible. I ordered a bowl omce and I was given my food all mashed up together in a STYROFOAM DRINKING CUP. .. I used to like this place a lot but I dont think I will be going back.

Yelp
I am so pleased that this long empty spot now has a functioning restaurant and I'm especially excited that it happens to be a Taco Palenque. The food is fresh and tasty, and you can enjoy their delicious chips and salsa while you wait. My favorite is the creamy green (avocado) sauce. I enjoyed the pirata and pastor tacos. The homemade flour tortillas are extra special. My wife liked her enchiladas suizas but wanted just a little more sauce. My kids all enjoyed their meals too. It's not cheap (~$60 for a party of 5), but this isn't low quality/made in a laboratory food, so I think it was worth it. They have the menu posted above the cash registers but I don't think it's everything they offer so consider looking online. I assume folks who grew up with it will know what's what, but you may have to ask what some of the tacos include (I did.) Given that they're likely gonna have a lot of first time customers, they might want to do more to help folks get comfortable with their offerings. All that said, I am looking forward to returning to try more things. It's a great addition to the usual neighborhood offerings.

Yelp
Never tried this chain before, pretty darn good! Salsa bar fully stocked, clean, friendly, and food was surprisingly good! Will definitely come back to try more of the menu, thanks!

Yelp
I ordered (from the phone) because I saw they had chilaquiles and was genuinely shocked when I rolled up and realized it was both a drive through and chain restaurant. I say that ONLY because it's THE BEST service and food I've ever encountered in a drive-through franchise style restaurant. You see me, (not knowing) it was a fast food style franchise, I asked them to make it to my preferences...(ie: "can I have it made with the yummy homemade chips) The woman said she would ask the chef, then confirmed they could do it. I then went to pick it up and was like "oh it's a drive through! gosh I would have never known, by how they responded on the phone." I walked in to pick the food up, and thanked the women. Then tried the food, and THE FOOD WAS LEGIT AMAZING! Went back today, (week later) and a man named "Marcus" was behind the counter. (Maybe manger?) I told him how much I enjoyed the chilaquiles last week, so I was back! He smiled and said "so glad to hear that!". Then after I paid, and was getting chips at the salsa bar, he walked over and handed me two "tacos on us" coupons. I just wanted to commend whomever is steering this ship on unexpected excellence.
google avatar

Rafael G.

Yelp
Very good tacos. I had the guisada and the steak tacos. They come with beans inside and are pretty delicious. The tortilla also appears to be home made so that's a bonus. I ate them so quick I didn't take any pics but trust me, pretty solid! They're a little on the pricey side but the tacos were pretty good. I'll be back to try their one of their plates.
google avatar

Thor B.

Yelp
Been here several times and been going since they opened. Over the last several months, the food has been shrinking in size. They are putting less meat filling. If you dont trust me, read the other reviews, look at the older pictures of the food and look at the more recent ones. They are cutting back on their helpings and this place was already super expensive, now your paying $20 for lunch and walk away hoping you get full. Never again, we are done with this place.

Lisette B.

Yelp
Is it just me, or are their portions getting smaller and smaller?? Ordered a $12 steak burrito, and it was the same size as a Taco Bell burrito. Taco Palenque used to make them double the size. It appears that they are following the steps from Chipotle. Charging high price's for small portions.
google avatar

Margarita B.

Yelp
The wait time for this fast causal was over 20mins. Food was ok, nothing spectacular.
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
Online orders, 3rd party orders, ordering at the counter. Doesn't matter, if you ask for something to be left out, they'll include it (maybe double it!). If you ask for specific salsas on orders from their own website, they ignore it and throw whatever they have nearby in the order. If you're particularly unlucky, they'll throw in a bunch of extras like sour cream and guac, even when you note you're allergic! This is REALLY fantastic when you don't drive and have to walk.

Dj b.

Yelp
This is the 3rd time I come hoping it got better..dissatisfied again..ordered breakfast tacos ..potato and egg was cold and tortilla was old and hard..same thing with my second taco ..cold and just not good ..im still going to try lunch or dinner ..stay tuned ...

Mason D.

Yelp
The lady who handled all of our food was very kind and offered great service. Pretty affordable and great food highly recommend.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
If you're looking for quality Mexican food, Taco Palenque is the place. From the tortillas to the charro beans and rice, everything is fresh. They have a great salsa bar with amazing fresh hot chips. Come to Taco Palenque of you're looking for "fast" food that doesn't skimp on quality or quantity.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
Great food, friendly fast service, a loaded salsa bar and free chips and salsa while you wait! SHUTTHEFRONTDOOR!!! We've tried their street tacos, and quesadillas and both were wonderful. The place is spotless and the staff always has a smile. Nice to have a local taco joint that gets it right, because TACOS ARE LIFE!!
google avatar

Andria H.

Yelp
This is a chain restaurant but new to Cedar Park. Very friendly staff, good (and good sized!) breakfast tacos and an unlimited refill chips and sauces bar while you wait/eat. Green sauce was our favorite. Order at the counter, grab your number and they'll bring it to you for your enjoyment. Photos speak louder than words when it comes to tacos.
google avatar

Hank R.

Yelp
There breakfast tacos are really good. You will only need two and this will last you all day till dinner time. The people who work there are very nice. Enjoy your tacos

Conor N.

Yelp
Delicious tacos! Nice atmosphere. They had soccer on when I was there. We will be back for sure! Oh and you'll love the chips and salsa bar. Tasty and fresh.
google avatar

Alvera B.

Yelp
We arrived for dinner on a Friday night. I ordered the Caldo de Res and my husband ordered a fajita taco. The carrots in my soup were raw and the corn on the cob was cold in the middle. The squash was also undercooked. We waited over 20 minutes for the food. Our drinks "horchata" were very watered down. Very disappointed for our first visit to this establishment. The ambiance was as to be expected for a fast food taco joint, but with such a hispanic name I expected better food.
google avatar

Ryan D.

Yelp
They keep making delicious food. I love the Pirata tacos but plan to try most of their menu. Our son always gets the bacon, egg and cheese tacos.
google avatar

Lydia R.

Yelp
Always so good. I eat here almost twice a week to get my fix. The fideo is as good as my grandma Steak taco is my go too.
google avatar

Johnny H.

Yelp
Food is adequate but the service is terrible the get the order wrong. No way I am sending it back as I don't want them to spit in the food or put some other bodily fluid in it.
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
Friggin delicious. I've only had piratas but can't wait to try more! The fajita meat is great

Shayla M.

Yelp
The food was awful. Very dry. No flavor. I was looking forward to eating it just to be disappointed! I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
Finally!!! A decent non Tex mex restaurant in the cedar park area!! The quality of the food is much higher than you find at other Mexican style fast food, and the drive up service was quick and efficient. The fajita meat competes with Lupes for a better price. The flour and corn shells are fresh and delicious. The quesadillas were solid hot, the retirees beans even tasted great. We'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Mariela A.

Yelp
Love that Taco Palenque is now in Cedar Park . Great service, good ambiance and delicious food! Will be back

Pete C.

Yelp
Love the food! Real Mexican not Tex Mex. I get take out there once a week. Today there was a sign saying 2 for one burros. Went in and ordered 4 burros which should have cost the same as 2 burros. The counter help said that only applied to the first 2 burros and not the other 2. No such qualification on the sign. I left feeling cheated.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Amazing food!! We tried Yaco Palenque for the first time last weekend, via delivery service, and we were sooo impressed! While I wasnt a fan of the chips (too thick, personal preference) the Tacos and burritos were incredibly flavorful, and the homemade tortillas are to die for! Definitely a must try!
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
Taco Palenque is what every fast food Mexican restaurant should aspire to be. The food is made fresh and tastes great. The service is fine for a fast food establishment - mostly self service. The value is great for the quality of food and the endless chips and salsa. I was really impressed by the sirloin tacos, rice, and beans. If this was served to me at a sit down restaurant I'd be impressed. Overall a great addition to the Cedar Park restaurant scene.
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
This place is great! The food is amazing, we love the pirata taco. The salsa bar is the cherry on top. My grandparents loved the sweet empanadas. Not a single complaint. Our new favorite fast Mexican food.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
Okay, I'm pretty snobby about good food-THIS PLACE IS GREAT!!! I thought it was just some cheap Taco place, but before I left the cashier with my order, I could tell it was something different entirely. First off, you feel like you're giving your food presences to your mom, who knows how to give you exactly what you like. Then you look over the counter and see how carefully the cook is handle to food be seared, the care to his movements. You can tell this may be his career and devotion. Then you get the food... omgoodness... home made tortillas so fresh they are almost too hot to handle. Tender meat, delicious salsa, fresh avocado, all perfectly made with no sloppiness and no pretentiousness. I live only half a mile away, but I'll be returning here every week or more henceforth. And it's affordable!!! The manager came by and politely but warmly greeted us after we began eating, to check we had everything needed. My son and I both agreed, they make their food with love in it.
