I ventured upon Taco Prado the other day for lunch and thought I would stop in. First and foremost, don't expect fancy. This is a whole in the wall place that serves traditional taqueria style tacos and burritos. It is not the type of Mexican place where you sit at a table and they bring you chips and salsa. It is counter service and then they'll bring your food to the table.
If you have never eaten at a real Mexican taqueria, then you should know that tacos are served on soft corn tortillas with cilantro and onions. This isn't Taco Bell. Obviously, they are used to Americans coming in expecting the hardshell with cheese and lettuce, so they will serve you that if you insist... for a price. However, you are robbing yourself of the experience of a true Mexican taqueria experience.
Their menu consists of tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, and tortas with most of the traditional meat choices.
I had 4 tacos: 1 barbacoa ( shredded beef)
1 carnitas ( pulled pork)
1 Al pastor (Seasoned pork)
1 pescado (fish)
They were all good sized and I really had a hard time finishing all 4. All were served on the best soft corn tortillas I have had outside of homemade! (Apparently, the owner also owns a store/bakery that makes them fresh every day) And all of them were served with cilantro and onion. The fish one was nothing special and I'd probably skip it next time. However, the barbacoa and the pastor ones were awesome! I would order these every time. The carnitas was a little fatty but still flavorful.
Like many little taquerias, they had a bar where they had extra garnishes like onions, cilantro, hot peppers, radishes, limes, and such to add to your food. They also have two types of sauces, a red and green. Both are spicy, but the green sauce is a bit milder than the red.
The inside is nothing special and quite frankly could use some work. The floors are all cracked and steps are broken. But, you don't come here for the ambiance. You come here for the cheap and delicious tacos and burritos.
The service was okay. The girl at the front was very young and either new or learning.
All in all, I think this place is worth a try and I'll definitely be back!
