7 Taquerias to Try in Maryland’s Taco Triangle | Eater DC

"As you continue down Edmonston Road, look for the bright blue building. That’s Taco Rico, which has one of the best “Taco Tuesday” specials in town. Once per week, all tacos from noon to 10 p.m. are $1.50. The best version to sample is the tacos al pastor, sliced off a vertical spit that turns in the window. For a spicier kick, order the briny and peppery shrimp soup that’s similar to a dish found in the coastal region of Veracruz." - Tim Ebner

First of all I loved the wholesome decor of of the place, theres decors all around & felt very cozy. The service was good and they handled the communication nicely with patience even though we don’t speak Spanish. Foods were served hot & very flavourful as expected from authentic Mexican cuisine, loved the extra dipping sauces.

Hit or miss! Careful what you order. My plate was not good. I ordered some type of Tostada. Can’t remember the proper name (see picture below) the tortilla wasn’t toasty enough. Tasted like an unwrapped burrito. But other party members meal like the pansita! And sope were good. Overall the this Mexican food restaurant is missing little things like adding guacamole to your meal. That is a must!! They also should through in a little pick de gallo! The service is lack luster and with little enthusiasm. They seem bored and unhappy. I think they need to try to go the extra mile for customers or we will go somewhere else!

Prices went up! Too expensive now. $4.50 for a regular taco isn’t a good price. Steak taco is $5.50. Two tacos for $9-$11 with no sides or drink is no good in this economy. Food is great not the price.

Google
It's one of those grimy little hole in the walls. After watching the guy stand close to the front counter cut raw bloody beef I definitely had second thoughts about eating there. He took his bloody glove hand and accepted money from someone. He saw me looking at him and then he went over and washed it. It is definitely one of those holes in the walls where you just pray that you don't get food poisoning. But I must admit I order two chicken tacos they weren't seasoned as well as you would expect from authentic Mexican restaurant but they were good. But it was 3 p.m., I hadn't eaten all day so take that into account

Google
Quiet little hole-in-the-wall spot in Hyattsville, serving up authentic Mexican tacos. I got one all pastor and one cecina, and both meats were nicely grilled. I also got a sope with carnitas that I’d probably skip next time in favor of an extra taco or two (the taste was overwhelmingly refried beans). Horchata was good, too. Pro tip: It’s only 25¢ more per taco to get a handmade tortilla.

My sopes where delicious. I had al pastor, lengua, asada. Agua de Jamaica was not so good. The salsas so tasty!!

Yelp
The food here is Always amazing that's why I always come back. They have great customer service and waitresses are always checking to see if we need anything else. My favorite things to order are the shrimp tacos and the Quesadillas de tinga they will not disappoint!!

Yelp
Today taco Rico lost a customer . I had been coming in to this place and I became a regular over the last month or so and never had a problem until today. I think the guy might have been new or something but he got my whole order wrong . I ordered two orders of three tacos al pastor . Which I always order with pineapple and he has taken down my order before but my tacos came with no pineapple, didn't notice until I was a taco in because the flavor wasn't the same . So I told the people about it and they seemed upset as if I was the one In the wrong . When it came time to pay I saw my receipt and it was 38$ the guy added a 10% tip even though that's illegal in Maryland to add service charges for tables under 6. And I wasn't going to tip because they got my whole order wrong . All in all this place is a hit or miss .

Yelp
My friend and I ordered separately and were both rung up for higher amounts than we should have been by the same guy. The receipts are not itemized and after arguing with him he charged the correct amount from the menu. Based on other reviews this seems like a deliberate attempt to overcharge people and hope they won't notice.

Yelp
Taco Rico is by far one of the best and authentic Mexican restaurants in the DMV. I can't say enough good things about the service at this restaurant. The staff is incredibly accommodating and goes the extra mile to ensure guests are happy. The ambiance of this restaurant is second to none. Whether dining indoors or al fresco, you will be surrounded by beauty and charm. It's the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a meal in style. Fine dining truly.

Yelp
One of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in the dmv! Great food. Amazing service. What more could you ask for? A true hidden gem

Kevin R.

Yelp
This restaurant has been a staple to Hyattsville since they started with a blue food truck. Which ironically is parked in their establishment. The pansa aka menudo is a top notch plate. Pair that with two tacos of your choice and watch your hangovers cure themselves.

Yelp
We happened to come across this place by accident so glad we did ..they are family owned and operated definitely authentic decorations and service and food has been awesome...we had richard as our server and he is so genuine and cares about the whole experience if in the area a must try

Yelp
Tried to give them the benefit of the doubt . But very disappointed. Several bad experiences and I still went back . But never again . 1st occasion: they missed one taco in my order . (Didn't say anything) 2nd occasion: I ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was SUPER dry & hard to even chew . ( didn't say anything) 3rd occasion: I ordered tacos to go . When I got home I opened the tacos and on 3 tacos there was barely any meat(tacos de tripa) I called and told them that if they didn't have enough meat they could have told me so I could select another type of meat but those tacos were just unacceptable because I paid full price for the taco not parcial price . I was told they were sorry and next time I would get "two free tacos" 4th occasion: I ordered my tacos and mentioned the "two free tacos" . I waited one hour for "9" tacos . I get home and I'm missing "the two free tacos" and one of the tacos that i did get once again barely had meat . At this point I was very upset . I didn't call I went to back to the restaurant. I mentioned that I didn't get the "two free tacos " they proceeded to say I wasn't getting no free tacos because they tacos from the previous time had enough meat . I said okay that I wanted my money back and I was returning the tacos because I was not satisfied. They said they could refund me because I paid with card . Overall I wouldn't recommend this place . Not to mention one time I saw the guy owner outside the restaurant and he came inside and started cooking without washing his hands. Hope someone from the restaurant reads these reviews.

Yelp
After coming back from my vacation last weekend in Mexico, thought I'd check out which restaurant in this Mexican community makes breaded chicken torta closely as good as back in Mexico. This place isn't even close when I ordered one for carryout. Although they were a little generous on the toppings, the chicken cutlet was pretty dry almost like jerky. They require a minimum order of $10 to accept credit card. Wouldn't even bother ordering there again at all.

Yelp
This place hit the spot! Horchata was on point. The flautas and chicken enchilada plates were authentic, flavorful and well put together plates. We also had the Pancita soup (not pictured) and it was really good! Service was great and we plan on returning to try more soon.

Yelp
Chose this restaurant because of the reviews, but was disappointed with the service and the food. We were told that the wait was 20 minutes. However, it took more than 45 minutes to get 3 carne asada burritos and a chicken quesadilla. The restaurant didn't appear to be busy, but I guess they had a ton of to go orders I wasn't aware of. The quesadilla was ok, but I did not enjoy the carne asada burritos, as the meat appeared to be ground beef instead of steak. Wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Wonderful service, beautiful owners and the tacos are heavenly! I was desperately in need of some authentic Mexican street tacos, like what I grew up on in Inglewood, California and had many times in Mexico. Taco Rico filled that void today! We simply had the Bisteca Tacos con frijoles y arroz! The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, dressed only with white diced onion and cilantro served on two soften corn tortillas. The rice and beans taste like mom made them! I am beyond satisfied. I plan to return to explore the rest of the menu. I definitely recommend this hood jewel. Any restaurant established for 15 years and you can feel the warmth and love in the place deserves a 5 star rating any day! Last photo is of... ****My leftovers I made into a 'oh so delicious bowl'! Rice, beans, a sprinkle of the meat left from some of my steak tacos, jalapeños, onions and seasoned with the sauces served at the table. Yummers!!!

Yelp
We came here after seeing the reviews and another taco place down the street was super busy on Saturday night. The place is amazing. The tacos are fantastic. We ordered 6 tacos between myself and my husband and one cheese quesadilla for our kids to share (4 years and 2 years old). The kids raved about their quesadilla even though we regularly make quesadillas at home- they said it tasted different than the ones we make at home (which is just tortillas with melted cheese inside) but they were great. They speak English well! Good because my Spanish is limited although we love frequenting taco places and not all of them speak English well. We ordered one chicken, 2 pastor, one grilled steak, 2 carnitas. We also had the flan for dessert which was small but we shared it among the 4 of us. All that food for $26. Great, cheap place. Caution to those who like a fancy place to eat: the floor is pretty dirty and was unswept. Definitely a hole in the wall place but was amazing food and great service! We loved it! Great for little kids. We loved the decor too which seemed authentic.

Yelp
On Sunday evening; I was there with my friend. We ordered Pancita Sup, Tacos and a Burrito. The place was crowded and I expected to have the order coming with delay because of that. But I was wrong. The server named Candy did a very good job bringing the food in a short period of time very reasonable considering the amount of costumers. She was very nice and efficient with a beautiful smile and that is exactly what makes a costumer comeback. Good food and fantastic serving skills. I invite you all to go to Taco Rico and experience the authentic Mexican Food. And feel completely like a king or Queen on the hands of Candy the best Server I have found on the area of Mexican restaurants in Riverdale. I give this experience a 5 stars no doubt about it.

Yelp
Normally like this place but DONT ORDER SPICY CICKEN QUESADILLA. Sopping in grease, not spicy just greasy. :(((( BAD cuts of meat up top and only half way through the dish... Also ordered huaraches con carne and the CARNE is all fat!! In corner. Bad meat in both dishes :(((((

Yelp
Yep. The hype is real. Best tacos I've found in the area since moving from South Philly. I had the goat barbacoa with guajillo salsa, picked up a nice torta for the wife and was very impressed with both.

Jay R.

Yelp
Taco Rico is hands down the best place to go for authentic and delicious Mexican food! Richard attended us and gave us excellent customer service. We got the pansa soup, tacos de al pastor and chips. Everything tasted perfect!

Yelp
Humble restaurant but really great food. Will definitely stop in again. Chorizo burrito was amazing.

Yelp
Omg! This is the best Mexican restaurant I've been to in a long time. They have the absolute best tripe soup I've ever had in this area. It's off the beaten path, residing in nothing but a residential neighborhood, which is probably why they're so good. It's a small establishment, not a whole lot of seating but it's a who cares since the food is superb. There's no reason to add more to this review. I've said enough. You've got to come here! It's a must!

Yelp
Stopped in on our way out of Edmondston Sublime chile verde and bistec. Handmade tortillas.

Yelp
This taqueria is so delicious!! We just found this hidden gem and have been addicted ever since. The people are super nice and super quick! I definitely recommend.

Yelp
I love this place. The tacos are delicious and my husband loves the torta cubano. I can put anything in a corn tortilla and call it a day and he's the same way with some good bread... so this is a great place for us both.

Monica C.

Yelp
The food is terrific! The wait for the food, even though we were practically the only customers in there, was close to 45 mins.
google avatar

Yelp
Best restaurant in, Riverdale! Anything CHICKEN is worth trying. Don't be afraid to try new things, you might like it!

Trevor K.

Yelp
was very skeptical when I first walked in being as though I was the only customer, but the food was nothing short but good w/ authentic flavors. each meal comes w/ mild and spicy salsa and jalapeños. I ordered the goat burrito, it had a few bones in it which was expected but it was very filling and good and the meal didn't even cost me $8
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
Good authentic food! Restaurant could use a good deep cleaning but I guess this adds to the authenticity. Won't deter me from coming back for some good tacos and quesadillas.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
Excellent, the tacos are amazing and they also have a bit of a central American flair with popusas. They have so many vegetarian options too. Everything on the menu is apetizing. The atmosphere is very home like. The staff is friendly and very courteous. Taco Rico is doing it right. We live out of State, but will always stop in for a meal when in Maryland. Two thumbs up, way UP!

Kate K.

Yelp
A wonderful surprise. Fresh, authentic, delicious. Friendly service. Got tacos- chorizo was very flavorful. The tongue was amazing. Ordered cactus which complemented the tacos well.

Yelp
The tacos are the best North of Mexico and the spicy shrimp soup is my favorite if you are a seafood lover and like spicy food then the shrimp soup is for you

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go get a mexican torta (sandwich).. they have one called "torta cubana" which has milanesa (breaded beef), breaded chicken, and ham along with refried beans, cheese, pickled jalapenos, tomato, lettuce, and avocado (though they are kinda spotty on their avocado usage). Still the best torta.. I've compared them to the tortas at "Taqueria Tres Reyes" and must say the ones at Taqueria Tres Reyes are oily, bland, and overall lacking in the flavor department compared to the ones at Taco Rico. Taco Rico also uses fresh baked bolillo bread which they pick up at the Flor de Puebla Bakery right down the street. Other mentionables are the delicious "quesadillas de huitlacoche" and "flor de calabaza".. yum! Their tacos are decent and tasty.... unfortunately I have yet to find some out of this world tacos in the area and that includes the ones from Taqueria Tres Reyes which taste bland to me. Also I prefer to get my food to go from this place because although they do have a large seating area the jukebox is always blasting so loud you can't hear yourself think!! Otherwise I wouldn't mind eating there since the ambience is more family like (they don't serve alcohol) and therefore you get many families with children eating here not the same ambience as La Sirenita which if you're female makes you feel like you walked into a trap and the lions are ready to devour you...

Dawn C.

Yelp
I've had take out from here three times and the food is AWESOME! We just moved to the area and have been trying different taco places and this one is the best by far! I had the carnitas, al pastor, and carne asada tacos and they were amazing. The guacamole is rocking as is the green salsa. My son loved the quesadilla! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
I would have to say this is definitely one of my favorite places to go when it comes to real Tacos, they make it all fresh and the taste is really good, I love that they have a great variety of meats and also just different plates of foods you can choose from, all of it is Mexican good authentic food! It's very family oriented and I would say the place is alright looking but the food does make up for it and pricing is great as well.

Carmen V.

Yelp
This is the worst place to go eat. Food was cold , and looked raw as well , the food looked like it was microwave . The torta was just gross
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
Well the only bad I could say is that we ordered and it seemed to take a while to get some chips and salsa. But it turned out they were making them fresh for us. And the food went way uphill from there. Also liked the homey authentic atmosphere.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
The tacos were fresh, and the service was friendly, but the place is not very clean. The atmosphere is family oriented, though the outside appears questionable. I would likely go back, but maybe just for takeout.

Hai H.

Yelp
Wow. Thats all i could say when i saw these delicious tacos. It was like love at first sight. The meat was flavorful and succulent. Horchata was amazing. Friendly staff and very affordable. 10/10 will go again.

Clare D.

Yelp
Fantastic food! We just stumbled on this place randomly looking for a place to eat, but I'm so glad we did. Best tacos I've had since living in Mexico.

Esther G.

Yelp
It took them 1 hour to make 4 tacos and 1 Torta. And the end the food is horrible. Never will go there again.
