The Best Restaurants in Tacoma, Washington | Eater Seattle

"Ultra-spicy cuisine is the specialty at this Lakewood restaurant. Diners can assemble a full meal just from the appetizer menu, which includes wontons in chile oil, Chongqing slobbering chicken, tofu, and cold noodles. Other standouts are the braised beef noodle soup, and hand shaved dan dan noodles." - Meg van Huygen

Amazing place! First time here, but the server was awesome, she listened to our needs and suggested the popular dishes. The food was just delicious. We got vegetable fried rice, twice cooked pork belly - Szechuan style, hot pepper beef, garlic string beans. Price was extremely reasonable, we were 4 people and cost was below $100

BEST STEAMED DUMPLINGS 🥟 They were fresh and handmade in house— not frozen! I loved the broth and how tender the beef was in the Beef Noodle Soup. We loved the Hot Pot experience— especially my son. The fish balls, fish, squid— all so yummy. The spicy cold beef and tripe was divine. It takes a bit for the food to come out, but when you understand that it’s made fresh to order and by hand, you realize it’s worth the wait. We decided to come here for Lunar New Year, and I am really happy we did. Service was as attentive as they could be, given there were two men doing their best with a FULL restaurant. I definitely give them grace for the timing of service as they certainly could’ve used more help. We got there when there were only two other parties besides us, and when we left there was not a seat left in the house! They were BUSY! I am happy for them. May they continue to flourish in business. Plan on spending time here if you decided to dine in. This is not a place you go to for fast food, but a meal made with love and care. Wishing them more success in 2025!

Food was so good. We ordered beef hot pot and crispy chicken in hot garlic sauce. Both were not spicy at all : ) staff were really nice.

On my quest for Pickled Pepper Chicken with Black Bean Paste, I stumbled upon Tacoma Szechuan's Hot Pepper Beef. Curious, I called to ask if they could swap the beef for chicken—and to my delight, they said yes. Without hesitation, I drove 32 minutes from the North. When I arrived, I asked if they could prepare it exactly as I remembered from 2012-2016: Pickled Serrano Pepper Chicken with Black Bean Paste. They assured me they’d make it next time, which had me thrilled. I hope that this is a lunch item. The order came to $17.55 and I rounded it up to $20—because, let’s be real, $20 lunches are the new norm. I got in my car, and the anticipation was unbearable. The attached photo says it all. Mixed with white rice, every bite was a flavor explosion—a cowabunga moment, a true tango on my tongue. I'm confident that their other dishes not only meet but exceed expectations. Give it a try.

Google
There's no other place in TACOMA I would ever go to for Chinese food BUT HERE!!!! the customer service was above 5 stars i mean THE BEST. it was like our food was ready before we could even think about it. The host was so attentive and gracious. Literally the best customer service I ever got in Tacoma. PERIOD. WHILE serving other patrons. Our food came fast and HOT!!! very affordable. The food was over five stars. The restaurant was so clean and decorated well. Our server was perfect. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AND APPRECIATE THIS BUSINESS.. THE BEST IN TACOMA

Google
Everything was on point. We had Honey Walnut Shrimp, General Tao's Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Potstickers, and Pork Chow Mein, and all of it was delicious. My favorites were the Honey Walnut Shrimp, General Tao's Chicken, and the Potstickers, so consider those if you're not sure what you want. Our server Sean was fast and attentive, making sure the food was good and that our sodas were filled. He came by several times asking if everything tasted good and if we needed anything else. The hot tea they provided was also very good. Don't make the mistake of passing up this gem.

Yelp
Om! Nom! Nom!!! Finally! Some decent Chinese food in Washington. The food actually had flavor. The wait staff were great and saw to our every need. The place looks nice too. We will come here again.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't been to this place sooner! Tacoma Szechuan is located in a small plaza that shares a parking lot with other business like Pal-Do World Market. I always walk by this restaurant, but finally stopped by on Saturday. My sister wanted to try Mapo tofu, but we weren't sure where to go to get Chinese food outside of Seattle. I quickly checked to see if this restaurant had Mapo tofu, and they did! We were seated right away. Once we were ready, we ordered: - Green Onion Pancake $7.99 - String Beans Beef $16.95 - Mapo Tofu $13.95 - (2) White Steamed Rice $3.00 We also had iced water, and hot Chinese Herbal Tea! We enjoyed everything! We weren't able to finish it all in one sitting, so we took our leftovers to go. Our server was super nice, and charismatic! I would definitely come back again to try other dishes since there was quite a large menu!

Yelp
We ate like a king & queen here! Service was soooo fast & friendly. Large portions. Ambiance was peaceful. Green beans were some of my favorite!

Yelp
Had the spicy szechuan soup with hand shaved noodles, so delicious. Also had the fried prawns which were good as well. From the outside this place looks a little sketchy but I think it's just one of those hole in the wall places that is worth trying, especially those hand noodles.

Yelp
I have frequented Tacoma Szechuan a many times. Usually pretty good until this last visit a few days ago. I called in an order to take to go. When I called, the person on the phone was curt and short. I didn't pay much attention to it because of my past experiences here. When I arrive to pick up my order, I see that they have bubble tea. I mentioned that I am here to pick up my call in order and asked if I can order a bubble tea. The lady at the front tells me, no because they don't have time for me. I don't understand refusing to serve me, but then also serving me. I felt it was rude and will not be ordering from here again. Oh! When I got home, I realized that my Mongolian beef was not prepared like how it usually is and it was really greasy. You'd think with a health department score of "needs improvement" they'd be more gracious to customers. Honestly, first time I noticed that score was during this visit. Giving two stars instead of one based on my prior experiences.

Yelp
Excellent service, great ambiance, delicious Chinese dishes. Our go to spot. Deep Fried Fish Szechuan is amazing! Great spice, not greasy or over fried, huge portions. Mixed Vegetable with any protein is solid. Today I had it with beef, normally I order chicken. Always an abundance of protein, not just veggies. Sweet and sour was flavorful, not too much breading, a lot of chicken. Very generous portions. Worth the drive if you are not in the area.

Yelp
Went to have lunch at Tacoma Szechuan. Very impressed. Nicely decorated inside. Ordered the walnut shrimp and the chicken string beans along with a cup of their hot and spicy soup and a cup of the egg drop soup. Everything was delicious. Huge portions. Service was great. very friendly. I loved overhearing some other guess at another table say how they had been to this restaurant apparently under a different owner and thought this food was even better than the previous owner. I'm definitely coming back.

Yelp
There is some Delicious & authentic Chinese food being served here. The staff are amazing from service to the cooks. Their Szechuan style is spicy for be prepared but it is a flavor blast to get excited about. Their prices are very reasonable and they have huge servings.

Yelp
We came here to grab lunch after my doctor's appointment as it was close by and we wanted to go to a café that was close by. When we walked through the door, we were welcomed warmly by a lady and then directed to our table which had the menu underneath the table glass. The décor inside was very lovely as it had paper lanterns hanging above, a partition with fake bamboo, and other décor that just fit with the overall vibes. As we were browsing, we were greeted by another older woman who was unfriendly and just had a very unwelcoming attitude. She asked us if we wanted drinks and we told her water and hot tea then she just says mutters okay before walking off to get our drinks. Once she returned with the drinks, I got the twice cooked pork belly lunch special with egg flower soup and BBQ pork fried rice while my boyfriend got the sweet and sour pork lunch special with egg flower soup and BBQ pork fried rice. Again, she just mutters okay then leaves before returning back with two cups of egg flower soup. I noticed that both our cups had some leaked egg flower soup but luckily there was still plenty enough in the cups, but it just seems very sloppy, especially since it wasn't filled all the way. After a few minutes, I received my twice cooked pork and fried rice while my boyfriend only received his fried rice. It was another good several minutes before he got his entrée. It felt a bit awkward as I eat first as I didn't want my food to sit out too long and was hungry, and luckily my boyfriend eats pretty fast. However, I know there are people who don't enjoy having their food come out at separate times so just be wary. There were two tables at the time, one that had already been served and one that had just arrived and placed their orders after my boyfriend got his food. Additionally, the table that had just came in got the lady who was friendly and she was making great conversation with the guests so ideally, it would be nice to have her as our server. For example, I wanted more hot water for the hot tea as I love their hot tea and asked the lady after she had dropped off my boyfriend's sweet and sour pork and she had just walked away but after a few steps, she says something a bit louder but I had no idea what she said. Then after a little bit, she comes back and just slightly slams the hot water. I wanted to ask for napkins too but I just felt like I was being an inconvenience to her. Even when my boyfriend went up to pay, she was staring at him during the tipping section which was super uncomfortable but he just gave her a dollar because he felt that she deserved it. She didn't even come check up on us at all. Luckily the meal was delicious as we both enjoyed our entrees and were satisfied with the taste, presentation and portions. The fried rice was really good too, probably the best one I have ever gotten with a lunch special anywhere else. I also appreciate that they have the fried rice in a separate bowl and the entrée on its own plate. I'm fine with food touching each other on my plate but it feels like we get more than just having them share a plate. We will consider returning but we definitely have other restaurants in Lakewood that offers more for the same price of food but better service and food making speed.

Yelp
The best dishes - eggplant dish. We enjoyed the green onion pancake too but would recommend ordering more than one if you have more than 2 people. It's thin like a tortilla almost. Not tortilla texture though. Not a fan - the mushroom beef dish and the beef chowfun. The spicy beef soup with hand sliced noodles was also meh to me. May be better with normal noodles. Customer service was okay. The person that served us was very nice but they were a little forgetful. A large party would work fine here.

Yelp
The food was delicious, authentic and flavorful. Our waiter was awesome and friendly and wasn't put off by our fussy twin toddlers. If I was local, this would be a regular place I'd visit! I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
The food was great- super vegetarian friendly. The waiters were super friendly, attentive, and helpful with the menu. Thank you!

Yelp
Maybe my food would've been better if I ate it inside the restaurant but for take out I was really disappointed cause it had so many great reviews and maybe i got the wrong dishes but this was just not great. I had the beef crispy noodles which is wayyyy more veggies than it is beef and it didn't say that in the description I wasn't expecting any veggies tbh and the sauce was lacking so much flavor and the meat tasted like it was boiled in the sauce. I also got the family combination which when I read family I'm thinking enough for 4 people.... Definitely not and maybe that is grub hubs fault for not making a good enough description but my family meal was 1 serving of chicken and rice 1 small side of soup and that's it. That's just a personal combo I just think they should change the name of that. And then we also got the dumplings in Szechuan sauce which was the only good thing out of the whole meal and I spent $70 on all that. I will not be back. Too over priced for what u get

Yelp
Best chinese food in Tacoma. Great lunch specials. Fast takeout service. Overall solid place.

Rachel K.

Yelp
Oof, this place is so bad. The food is so bland and the sauces are very thin. I was very surprised since it has 4 stars but I can't imagine why. We ordered beef with broccoli, cashew chicken, and chicken chow mein. It was wild how bad it was. The meats had a weird texture and the veggies were barely cooked. I would not ever order from here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Owner was very welcoming and service was very good. Everyone was friendly from staff, management to cooks. Portions were a lot and flavor was on point. Bookmarked for go to Asian food in south Tacoma.

Yelp
Out on a work trip and decided to stop by at this local restaurant. I am so glad I did! The food is amazing, and the service is excellent! Sean walked me through the menu and recommended some amazing plates that were cooked to perfection. The flavors have a nice spice and are seasoned very well! Next time I'm in Lakewood I will make sure to stop by for a great meal.
google avatar

Jim A.

Yelp
The staff were very prompt and friendly. However, we ordered three different dishes. They were each too salty. They tasted bland. The bbq rice tasted old. The appetizers were bland. The egg flower soup had little taste and the soy sauce bottle was plugged and would not pour. This was our family Easter meal. It was disappointing.

Minh-Triet V.

Yelp
I'm mostly a Korean food guy but this is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the city. The Fried fish was spot on with perfect crunchiness and spicy. Service was friendly and prompt. The ambience is quiet and chill. Would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Not sure why this place has 3.5 stars. If you are wanting Szechuan food, this is the place to go! It has so much flavor and makes my mouth water and numb- just how I like it. The service was great. Our sever was so helpful and made great recommendations and helped us decide with meat dish to get with the right about of spice for both me and my husband. The amount of food was plentiful and it still had great taste. Definitely will be coming back here.

T B.

Yelp
Ordered general Tsao chicken and some egg rolls. Had no flavor, was mushy and just didn't have a great taste. First and last time getting food here.
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
Amazing per usual! Chicken was still crunchy and hot , shrimp were huge and delicious. We love this place !
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to hold off on my review until we dined at least 6x. From start to finish great food and great service all 6x.

Marion K.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious.......prepared just the way I like it. Service was good too

Lynette D.

Yelp
Wish I had taken pics before I ate it! Ordered Family Combination, Happy Family entre. Came with soup, BBQ Pork Fried rice and Four good appetizers, chicken wing, cream cheese wanton, fried shrimp and egg roll with sweet/sour dipping sauce. All good. The wonton soup had good flavor. Happy Family entre was generous with vegetables and shrimp, chicken and beef. I'll be back

Yelp
A hidden gem in Tacoma. You don't see a ton of authentic Szechuan food so it was nice to stumble across this restaurant. Their service was attentive and quick. My favorite dish was the dumplings in Szechuan sauce because it was actually Szechuan spicy and it actually came with quite a few dumplings. The beef hot pot came with a lot of beef and had glass noddles too. It was a great deal and it tasted great. It went super well with rice. I was disappointed their Fish with Pickled Cabbage Soup. This is the dish I tend to order when I go to a Szechuan restaurant. It was peppery and didn't have that chili pepper spicy and sourness that's usually in this soup.
google avatar

Autumn L.

Yelp
The food is great and I want to try more but these are my favorite so far! My coworkers love it when I bring it to the salon for us all to share in the break room

Steve P.

Yelp
There is no great Chinese food in Olympia so I drive up to Tacoma Szechuan. Great food here. I love the Dan Dan noodles (with the hand cut noodles). I always order dry cooked green beans. I don't know how they get them so tasty but I love them. The spicy Ma Po Tofu is so good. The twice cooked pork belly is great. I even love the Chow Fun. I hear that you can get a great Hot Pot there. I have to try it sometime.
google avatar

Autumn B.

Yelp
Really disappointed. My 8 person family has been going here for almost a decade. It's our go-to hot pot, period since Bon Adian shut down. Sadly, after today; not anymore. I went with my 5 year old daughter and best friend during lunch. We told her hot pot for my daughter and I, szechuan chicken for her. Not enough people for hot pot. Okay, understandable; so, my daughter and I split broccoli beef, sub beef for chicken. Nothing wrong...yet. My 5 year old was content with the broccoli children, but I certainly wasn't. What did the pandemic DO to this place?? Quality was incredibly low on this. Chicken was tender, but old. Sauce was borderline flavorless. The szechuan chicken was just as lacking. Sauce was useless and had no flavor at ALL aside from being spicy. Plus, of course, the chicken was still old. My friend tried to tell the waitress we had a large problem with our food. Lady, who is probably 15-20, shrugs and chuckle/scoffs at her, "Could have gotten the personal hot pot." "We weren't told she could do that." Another chuckle/scoff with an added shrug. "It's in the menu." The dish she was talking about, there is no way to know it was for only one person. As she knew what the customer WANTED to do, that was her responsibility to remember and say something. I've been a waitress before. It's literally part of the job to be able to make sure you're acquainted with the menu. This kid just wants a paycheck. We picked at our food and barely actually ate any. She took a couple bites, and my daughter and I had more than half of ours left, only really eaten by her. I went up to ask for a manager, got scoffed at again, and she turns to me and says, "I AM the manager." I was done. We packed outer food to push off on my hubby, brother, mom and two sons when we got home. Someone will tolerate it. But none of us will ever come back, and 4 people I introduced the place to have already told me they either won't go back, or they haven't even bothered since the pandemic, and have no issue staying away. I will be telling others. It's sad how disappointing this trip was. I'm glad I at least have another back up hot pot restaurant I can start to frequent. I'll miss the yinyang hot pot, but attitude and lack of helpfulness--from the MANAGEMENT..? No matter how good the food was, it wouldn't be worth that. TL;DR: No matter how good the food is, its not worth getting extreme attitude from your waitress/waiter. Less known if the food isn't even good.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed with our meal tonight. We wanted Chinese takeout and decided to give Tacoma Szechuan a try. While our entrees sure did look appetizing, the flavor was not so great. The kung pao tofu was ok, but the sauce was extremely salty and the dish could have used some type of veggies (was mostly tofu and a ton of peanuts). The shrimp was delicious but the dish was FULL of the red peppers...my husband and I love spicy but even one little bite was too much for us so I feel like we paid for shrimp and a pound of inedible peppers. The biggest disappointment were the eggrolls. They were tasty but $7.95 for 3 eggrolls (which were on the smaller side even, very little filling inside). We couldn't believe it! Food was so unappetizing the leftovers are going in the trash. $50 down the drain.
google avatar

Smaly K.

Yelp
I might as well update my review and go ahead and give that extra star. I really like this place, and I keep coming back. My siblings, my cousin, my best friend...we all want to keep grabbing food here. Everything we get is good. Some better than others, but nothing has been disappointing. My favorite is the Dry Cook Pork Intestines and the Dry Hot Pot with the Pork Intestines. They have the option of making the the entrées extra spicy for an additional charge, and the peppers they use in the dishes are actually spicy. Service is excellent. Staff are really friendly.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
So sad, this place needs to clean up. Food was always great so sad to say its awful now! Way overload on soy sauce, glass table top was shattered and unsafe! Food all came at once. Not in courses as per the usual. Even the cookie are awful, tasted and smelled of a bathroom cleanser called Fabulos
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
We had to drink a lot of water... Not because the food was spicy but because the food was extremely salty (almost inedible). The cumin beef was definitely the saltiest. We tried eating it with the chow fun to tone it down but it was still too salty. In addition, there is a grainy film on the beef due to over seasoning. The Szechuan chicken tasted like pure deep fried batter. Upon inspection, there is no "real" chicken in there (see picture). It's like some kind of processed filling. Also their portions are ridiculously huge. We prefer variety and would like to have smaller portions and buy more options.

Kasey C.

Yelp
Fast service and the food was amazing! My new go to for Chinese. I live 35 minutes away but this place is worth the drive.

Yelp
Cash/Card accepted Free public parking Restrooms Group friendly Family friendly Chinese restaurant Sichuan style Boba milk tea Military discount Hotpot Buffet for party of 6 Take out avaliable Right beside Paldo World market in Lakewood. This restaurant offers up Traditional Sichuan food. Bursting with flavor and herbs with every order. You can try local favorites or be adventures and try out their authentic side of their menu. Very spacious with friendly customer service. Some areas require a proper wipe down, but all in all the food is amazing. They add automated tips on your receipt so just be aware of that. Overall a good spot rather than driving further up North to quench your cravings.

Lindsey C.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The customer service is always wonderful and the food is always fresh and delicious! We love the server Sean as well as the rest of the staff. They're always friendly and so welcoming!

Yelp
We love Szechuan flavors. It was a last minute order but they accepted it. (Thank you!) We ordered their Fresh Garlic Chinese Broccoli and Deep Fried Fish Szechuan Style. *drool* Flavor was on point and so was the crisp on the fish. We also got free chili oil. *drool x2* We'll definitely come back and try others on the menu!

Yelp
We had great intentions for Tacoma Szechuan. We are a family of four and we were wanting Chinese food. We ordered egg rolls, crab Rangoon, fried rice, chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, and cashew chicken. The total after tax was $106 which is pretty pricey for Chinese food, but after reading reviews we wanted to give this place a try. We ordered pickup and when we got home we were disappointed in portion sizing. There is no white rice included (or maybe they forgot?) for entrees. The three egg rolls for $9 were not egg rolls. They were spring rolls about the size of your index finger. The sweet and sour sauce came on the side and the container was 1/3 full. It was not enough to even cover the sweet and sour chicken. the entrees were portioned pretty small/not even halfway full in the takeout box. Taste wise things were good, but price wise it just was not worth it. There are a few other places that are almost half the price with good reviews I would stick to when looking for Chinese food. This one isn't affordable for what you get especially if you are feeding a large family.
google avatar

Lindsey A.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for several years. It's often packed, which is always a good sign, but they're still able to seat you promptly. Even if it means moving some tables/chairs around. We've tried many things on their extensive menu and have never been disappointed. It has always been clean and a comfortable atmosphere. The staff are very friendly, competent, and happy. When we have friends or family visiting we often choose to go here. There's absolutely something for everyone on the menu :) I'm getting hungry just thinking about the place, ha! I wholeheartedly recommend Tacoma Szechuan. Oh, and they have boba/bubble teas that are tasty too. Free parking Family friendly Group friendly Around the corner from Paldo World Clean bathrooms Big fish tank Take out is great, packaged well etc.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town. Food was so good! Portions were a little bit too much so had lots of leftovers for later.

Yelp
Wanted to give a 3.5 but yelp doesn't do half stars. The hotpot is great but I'm used to better. We got the yin Yang broth and did the buffet hot pot. The udon and vermillici noodles were very good. The spicy broth is SOO spicy but has great flavor. I preferred the non spicy this time. The reason for the 3.5 is the meat quality is alright. Didn't taste as clean as other hot pots but still good. Not much variety also they have pre assigned hotpot meals. I liked the beef and chicken most. Got egg flower soup to start it was delicious.

Carrie J.

Yelp
I've only had food delivered but it is always delicious with good portions. The food is always delivered at the perfect temperature and their prices are reasonable.

Heather D.

Yelp
Delicious food! I ordered the crispy chicken with hot garlic sauce and it was amazing! We also ordered the wonton soup, it was the best I've ever ordered! Tried their pear tea and again I was very pleased, I'd buy a case of it if I knew where to get it. My husband had the Szechuan beef and he really enjoyed that too. If you're looking for good food then you better make a stop here! Very friendly and attentive staff, they don't judge if you don't want your food super spicy.

Steven L. T.

Yelp
How great to find the flavors of china, specifically the Szechuan province, in Tacoma. There are many varieties of chinese food with Cantonese, Mandarin, etc that are all beautiful and enjoyable but this place mimics what I have found on the side streets while on business in Szechuan province and the flavors take me back there immediately. Don't go for Dim Sum, don't go for honey walnut xyz( they don't have any), but do go and enjoy some wonderful flavors of the Szechuan province. Spice that is amazing but not just hot but full of flavor!
google avatar

Fred W.

Yelp
This is my favorite Szechuan restaurant in Tacoma. I think it is a best kept secret. The ingredients are super fresh and the food is very good. At times it can be busy (lunch and dinner), however if you arrive early, or late, you won't notice the busy periods. In my book, a busy restaurant is a successful restaurant! They do have a very large menu--probably too large--and that means they can prepare virtually any Asian dish you can imagine. What sets them apart, is they do it extremely well. The portions are large, and they have a busy takeout option. If you are military, they have a 10% discount.

Yelp
Looked at reviews and didn't see anything to bad so stopped for take-out. Ordered BBQ Pork, Mongolian Beef, General Taos Chicken, Beef Chow Fun and Buddha's Delight. Price was reasonable, service spot on. I wish I had checked the food prior to leaving because what I received for BBQ pork was tragically pieces of shriveled, extremely dry slices of non-edible pork. General Taos Chicken was super dry even with sauce on it and disappointing. Fried rice was edible as were the remaining dishes. Sad that the place even put this out to serve at 5:30pm or any other time. I'm hoping they were having a bad day but any place that cared would never put what we received as BBQ pork out. Where's Chef Ramsey when you need him??

Yelp
Go to Chinese place! Authentic Szechuan flavor. We ordered the deep fried chicken szechuan style, chow fun, szechuan cold noodle, and dumpling with szechaun sauce. Everything was bomb!

Yelp
I remember really liking the place the first few times I came here but lately it has just been so-so. The staff is always very friendly but the food doesn't exactly blow me away. They have super delicious hot and sour soup but everything else I have tried has been fairly mediocre. Overall, I keep coming back to experiment with different menu items as they offer fair lunch deals that include entrees, soup, and rice.
