Two of LA’s Most Prominent Taco Makers Plot Big New Expansion Moves | Eater LA

"The Tijuana-style taco makers that began as a Hollywood stand are finishing a small brick-and-mortar in Burbank; the space at 4005 W. Riverside Drive is getting final touches and is slated to open next month, promising the same Tijuana-style tacos that made them popular." - Farley Elliott

Google
We werent sure what to expect it was our first time eating here, but we really were happy with the vibes! We had a food restriction and the attendant really guided us through what we could select for our dinner by listing all the ingredients. We ended up having the vegetarian mushroom tacos and they tasted so good! Definitely coming back for another round.

Vaibhav A.

Google
A great place to get tacos, mulitas and quesadillas. The person taking our order was amazing and made us feel at home. The salsa bar here is one of the best I've ever tasted and I would be coming back for more.

Google
I had such a good experience here. Came in for date night and the clerk working cashier was so friendly! The food was great and I was even talked into getting a souvenir sauce bottle! Definitely plan on coming back!

They understood & took it to another level & to top it off…. they brought it to CSUN, my film school. - @eatingwithricardo

Google
Doesn’t stack up compared to the other locations. Made an order online, paid, drove to pick up. They called to tell me they were out of basically everything I ordered. Out of chicken and steak. They offered to use mushroom instead. No way.

Jose S.

Google
Mediocre tacos. Won’t go back. Al pastor had no flavor. Not a lot of meat. Most taco places you can barely close the taco. I asked for no cilantro and had it. It wasn’t disgusting but not great. And parking sucks. So def not worth the effort.

Google
You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and it’s limited enough that you can try everything on there in a few trips. The Adobada is sensational, carne asada is tender and delicious and pollo asado is grilled perfection. Tacos and mulitas are soft and quesadillas and vampiros are crispy. The tortillas are made to order. Everything is served with onions, cilantro, guacamole and salsa. There’s also a salsa bar with a nice selection of house made salsas. Seating is limited. Street parking. Looking forward to my next visit!

Google
Had dinner with my friends here yesterday. The staff were really fast getting our orders out. Food was bomb and we had a good time.

Yelp
Ordering through the website was a little challenging so I had to order through the Toast app. Once the order was placed, everything happened seamlessly. I received text messages to notify me when the order was out for delivery, which was received on time. The food was delicious and the right amount for the group we were feeding. Everyone was especially impressed with the mushrooms. We will definitely order again in the future!

Yelp
Looking for tacos in Los Angeles is like looking for a needle in a needle-stack...they are plentiful, dime a dozen, and while they may not be on every street corner (yet), all you gotta do is look up and you'll probably find one. The good ones, however, take some time to find. When this place finally opened down the street from me, I thought it had found me...but these were not the tacos I was looking for. Tacos 1986 seems to be hit or miss in this town and I can totally see why it's a hit with so many people. It is everything you want from a taqueria without some of the unsavoriness of some other places in town. It's not on the side of some road, in a sketchy part of town...there's real places to sit...the ingredients are top quality, fresh...and yet, I'd rather go to one of those unsavory taco stands instead. Which is a shame, because Tacos 1986 isn't inauthentic like some other taco spots that sell their soul and go mainstream. The recipes are authentic. You can taste the quality of a hand made tortilla. The freshly shaved, grilled meats from the trompo. The guacamole is so fresh it's almost a neon green. The people who make the food are authentic. You can tell that Tacos 1986 comes from a real place of love and earnestness...but it doesn't capture the same magic you get from an abuelita making tortillas on a comal in a liquor store parking lot. The food was good and if you're in the right mood, it might even be great, but every time I've had it I never wanted more. There are many salsa options, but you end up defaulting to the red or green because the depth of flavors aren't that different. You have four proteins to choose from, but once they're all on a plate, they all look and taste kinda the same. I ordered a taco, a mulita, and a quesadilla...and of course they are different things, but it was kinda like putting a hat on The Rock and pretending he's someone else. There's definitely a time and place for Tacos 1986 and it's great that they are making authentic Mexican food accessible to more people, but unfortunately that isn't here and now.

Yelp
This is the third time I've had them and every time has been just ok. Not sure what it is, not enough salt/flavor? I ordered through Postmates and they had some BOGO DEALS. I went with the steak breakfast burrito - asada, eggs, cheese, refried beans, onions and cilantro. It was supposed to come with MACHA CREMA But they forgot to include it. Maybe this is what the burrito was missing. It was fine but a little bland. The best thing on the vampiro is the crispy cheese skirt but the tostadas themselves were stale. Throws off the whole taste and texture of the meal. Maybe it's a better experience in person/eating in, but ordering out is a hit or miss.

Yelp
Each time I need a yummy breakfast or an easy lunch this spot hits the mark. Their staff is friendly, their food is delicious and freshly made. Thanks!

Fernando C.

Yelp
Worst tacos I ever had, they were over priced and terrible in the sense that the salsa wasn't fresh. The pico de gallon that it comes with when you ordered them was watery. My fiancée ordered vampiros she didn't care for them either. I wouldn't recommend this tacos place to anyone I'm never going back. Leaves a lot to be desired
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
This place was a first for me and rhe family but fast and flavorful!!! The Quesadilla Combo was a hit freaking yummy. The Vampiro was also good but I'm definitely coming back for the Quesadillas.... They were truly yummy!!! We have since been back and they still ate dishing out yummy tacos and great customer service!!! Parking can be tough do to the location so plan accordingly the street parking can be a bit of a drag.

Yelp
Great tacos! Loved the selection we had. Highly recommend. Check out our video review @TripoutwithSadieandRandThom

Yelp
Wow... I'm honestly horrified at how bad these tacos were--especially considering we're in Los Angeles, arguably the best city for tacos. I just left after ordering three tacos and a mulita. The questionable chicken was extremely bland. The carne asada had no seasoning at all, and the adobada taco had burnt pieces of meat on top. Even the guac just tasted like plain, unseasoned avocado. I'm from California and have never had tacos this bad--even in other states. I absolutely love Mexican food and especially tacos, so this experience was incredibly disappointing. On top of the flavor issues, the order itself wasn't even right (my fault for not confirming with cashier). I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but this one is well deserved. You can easily find better tacos elsewhere--honestly, even Taco Bell might be a safer bet. Save your money and go to a real taco stand. I wasted $15 here and wouldn't wish the same on anyone else.

Yelp
What first caught my eye was the simplicity and boldness of the logo--it's clean, eye-catching, and the name itself is intriguing enough to make you want to step inside and see what it's all about. Now, a heads-up: parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially on a busy day. There's no dedicated lot, so parallel parking is your best bet. I wouldn't recommend ignoring any posted signs--it's not worth the ticket. Once you're inside, the place is clean and well-kept. Seating is either bar stools or standing, so it's more of a quick, casual spot than a sit-down kind of place. They've got a self-serve soda setup with the ice stored separately in a cooler next to the dispenser. The syrup quality was solid, and the ice tasted clean--always a good sign when eating out. There's also a salsa bar with a pretty impressive range--from mild to "why did I do this?" My favorite by far was the green salsa. I swear, I could eat that stuff on top of an old tennis shoe--it was that good. Tangy, flavorful, and just the right amount of heat. The menu covers the usual suspects--tacos, burritos, and quesadillas--but they've also got some specialties, like the tacos perrones I ordered. It's a flour tortilla layered with melted cheese, your choice of protein, pinto beans, guacamole, onions, and cilantro. I got it as a combo with rice, beans, and a drink, and the price was honestly a steal. The tacos were solid--you could taste each element as you chewed, which I appreciated. The only downside was the meat being a bit on the tough side and not as juicy as I'd hoped. That said, the staff was super helpful and attentive, and overall, the quality of ingredients and value for the price definitely make me want to come back.

Yelp
I have been searching for tacos that remind me of the famous Los Tacos No. 1 from New York City. I would say this is the closest taste and atmosphere that it reminds me of. I came here twice and my first experience was great. I ordered the #1 Taco Combo which included two tacos with salsa & guac, rice, and i got a bottled drink. The tacos were excellent, shoutout to the night employee that stuffed our tacos on 2/25. During my second visit last nite, the tacos were still good however there was very little meat and toppings... I was so excited to try it again but it seems like there's an inconsistency in portions. I love red rice but their rice here is not it lol. It's very very dry and they do not fill the cup (see photo attached). When I came in last nite, the interior was filthy and the condiment area. It seems like there's not much staff working? I really enjoy the tacos, i would say it's my favorite right now in LA but it's the cleanliness and inconsistent portions is why i only rate it 4 stars. *parking is annoying, only street but shared with plenty of other food establishments

Yelp
The tacos are consistently good here, so I haven't had any issues with those and their standard burritos. We recently placed a group order for ten breakfast burritos and were disappointed. Seems like all of them were missing some of the ingredients mentioned on the online menu (refried beans, salsa, onions). Unless they were there but very little to notice. This made them lack some flavor until you added the side of chosen crema. I'll stick to tacos and other items when I go back but probably not for breakfast burritos.

Mike A.

Yelp
Walked in for a late dinner. I tried all 3 meat options for tacos. They come with guac by default which is nice. They were all served on corn tortilla and were decent size. I had high expectations for the al pastor, but it was just ok. The carne asada tacos were really good though.
google avatar

Kristen A.

Yelp
Honestly. If I could give no stars I would. I had one of the worst dining experiences here. Not only did they get my order wrong **multiple times**, but the staff was incredibly **rude** and unapologetic. I paid for a meal I never even received correctly, and instead of fixing their mistakes, they acted like it was *my* fault. The food that finally came was not what I ordered, and at that point, I was too frustrated to keep arguing. Complete waste of time and money. **Zero customer service, zero care for getting orders right.** I will **never** come back and would strongly advise others to steer clear unless you enjoy disappointment and terrible attitudes. Save your money--go somewhere that actually respects their customers.

Yelp
I ordered on Uber eats got my burrito and just bit into a massive rock thankfully I didn't break my tooth, but I also called him now to try to let them know but no one's picking up because I think they close in five minutes very disappointed that there was a massive rock inside of my chicken burrito
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick couple of tacos. I would say overall pretty good but nothing special. I preferred the asada tacos over the al pastor. My tortillas fell apart as I ate which was a bit disappointing. Service was fine, vibes were basic but nice with indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Food: the Adobada Taco (Pork Al Pastor), Carne Asada Taco (Grilled Steak), Pollo Asado Taco (Grilled Chicken) & Hongo Taco (Mushroom) were all so very tasty with the onions, salsa, melted cheese, cilantro, salsa verde!!! I love the hand-made corn tortillas!!! Service: freshly made-to-order service; the owner is so friendly and kind!!! Design: interiors is simple with counter seating against the walls and one in the middle; exterior counter seating as well Overall: if you want great, authentic, mouth-watering tacos, then this is a must try!!!

Yelp
Got there food delivered the burritos were a bit soggy and greasy other than that they were good burritos 7.67/10

Yelp
I've wanted to like this chain so much but their tacos are just "ok". I have been to a few different locations, and each time the tacos are relatively bland and the salsas don't have much depth of flavor to them. The best meat is definitely the Asada. I recently tried the mushroom taco (which I'm a fan of at other taco spots) and the consistency and taste seemed like they were old/stale... I will probably not be back.

Yelp
I was looking for a spot to order a taco tray for a party. After reviewing photo menus on Yelp, I saw that Tacos 1986 had a 20 person platter. I went in to visit and ordered a few tacos to decide on the meat, as well as preordered ahead of time. The guys that helped me were very nice and informative. After our taste test, we decided on Adobada and Carne Asada. The next day, I arrived 15 mins ahead of the time I requested pick-up. I could see they were getting my order together and they started giving me parts of my order as they became available. By the time I got the last items, it was almost exactly the time I requested. I was impressed because they got it started at the right time and they didn't do so much prep ahead of time that the order was sitting around. This ensured everything was as fresh as can be. When we got home and took inventory, we discovered a big serving of beans, which we weren't expecting since it isn't shown on the listing on the menu. Can't complain about extras.. We had 12 people for this order and had about 1/3 of the 5 lbs of meat left over along with over 30 tortillas. We also had plenty of guacamole because they give such a large serving of it. What was lacking was onions and cilantro. They give much smaller containers of them, so we ran out. Same went with lines, they were gone pretty quick. Tips for this order. If you know your guests like onions and cilantro, request a double order of it. If you have a preference on salsas, ask ahead of time which 2 they pack. If you have preference on others, request containers to pack additional salsas. Overall, I was very happy with this experience and will be back for much smaller personal orders for sure, and they will now be top of mind when I decide to have a large order for a party again!

Yelp
The chicken and the al pastor were very tender and juicy. The service was great. The ambiance has great music. The colors of this place is red and white. My nephew really enjoyed their Al pastor tacos. I really enjoyed their chicken tacos!!!
google avatar

G G.

Yelp
This is the best spot in town. I go here for breakfast lunch and dinner! Top notch! Joey is the king of taqueros. The salsas are so damn good!
google avatar

Damien H.

Yelp
It's like a roulette trying to get what you actually ordered. Last time we tried, we got 4 items out of the 10 we ordered. Immediately after, we tried again and got 5 items, 3 of which we ordered. Also no sauces. If you get what you were hoping for, the food is tasty but swimming in grease. I hope they figure it out and get on track.
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
I would come here alllll the time if it was within walking distance to me. But alas, I savor each bite as if it'll be my last, like a warrior preparing for their final battle (akin to Rengoku in Demon Slayer -- UMAI! -- pero make it Spanish -- delicioso!). Out of the two meats I've tried, carne asada is top tier. I love how they provide pepinos, limon, and a variety of salsas. Reminds me of being back in MX only, I didn't have the opportunity to have AYCE cucumber as I normally would. Ah well, the experience was great nonetheless
google avatar

Kiki T.

Yelp
I was here for Take out during lunch. I think the prices are decent, especially for this area. The tacos are tasty!! I love that they have a salsa bar!! The people that took the order are decent.

Yelp
Stopped by here on a Monday around 4pm, place was pretty empty. I ordered 4 asada tacos one coke and a water totaled about $24. A little pricey but it was delicious. The service was great and the sauces were prefect. Tortilla is hand made it reminds me of back home. Place is super clean and the vibes were great. 100% recommend.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Overall, delicious tacos!! I ordered every flavor/meat ( chicken, pastor, asada, mushroom) with everything on it ( cilantro, guacamole, onion) and wow! Surprisingly, the mushroom was my favorite. So flavorful with an extra kick of some spice!! The chicken and pastor were good too. The carne asada wanted to be good but mine had too much fat going on. Overall though I would come back!!!

Franky V.

Yelp
Asked for guac and it was all brown an old. Meat was cold and not good at all. I used to love this place but has gone downhill
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Awesome TACOS! Visited here for the first time ever and it was amazing. Gustavo delivered excellent service and has such a positive attitude. The entire team was also very kind and friendly-- if you want the BEST TACO IN TOWN served by really good/hard working individuals-- TACOS 1986 Is the place. Way to go Gustavo and I will see you all soon!! Keep up the great work. Michael
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed eating here and love that they use the In Kind app to accept payment. I had 3 quesadillas trying each one of the meat options. The carne asada was my favorite. Originally I wanted to add chips but the three quesadillas were extremely filling. My husband purchased a burrito which he really enjoyed. Another thing we liked is that you can get Mexican coke!! That is always a joy for us to find places that sell it. We cannot wait to come back here. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We really enjoyed sitting outside to people watch. Street parking can be difficult to find but if you're patient it should all work out.
google avatar

Adrienna Y.

Yelp
We decided to pop in for a snack since we were already in the area, but I wished we'd made this our main meal. For our snack, we had a adobado mulita and a carne asada taco. If I really had to choose, the adobado is what I'd recommend, but honestly, both options were solid. The meat was incredibly juicy, well-seasoned and so flavorful. I was supposed to share, but I really really didn't want to. There is limited parking, but we didn't have any issues parking in the residential areas about a block away. It was a minor inconvenience for the reward. Can't wait to return to Tacos 1986 for more drool-worthy tacos!!!
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
Phenomenal! Another bucket list food spot marked off! Will definitely be coming back here!! Al Pastor was the best meat/taco I've ever had! The Horchata was also the best of its kind I've ever had! The sauce selection was so great! Verde will always be my favorite! Service was fast, couldn't tell you about the ambiance cause I had the food delivered to our hotel. But will definitely be making a stop at one of the locations next time we come into town! Favorite taco spot of all time now!
google avatar

Yelp
Tacos 1986 in general has been my all time favorite. However this location in Burbank is horrible. The gentleman was very nice, but does not inform you of changes to the food. Today i was very excited to go and when we paid for the food we got hit with the notice of no more trompo so we said it was ok and got asada. When they called our name to pick up the order, we got flour tortillas. I HATE FLOUR TACOS its very nasty to me. We did not know they ran out of the corn they just assumed we were going to take them. So i was very disappointed and NEVER AGAIN coming to this location at all. Not cool to have paid for food i did not eat and for the tortilla to be filled with tons of oil. If i could give it 0 starts it would be for sure 0!

Lala H.

Yelp
Tacos were really authentic and delicious. They are huge tacos! Love them! Will be coming back here. We went as soon as they opened on accident and loved the place. Their sauces are very good as well. Service is very friendly. Very spacious and was not busy when we went. Will go back!
google avatar

Joanna V.

Yelp
It's a small taco shop with stools more like bar type they do have a small sitting area to accommodate those in a wheelchair. They have a little salsa bar with plenty of options but none were spicy which a big downside for me there was also limes, radish and cucumber as well as a place for water with water cups that was accesible. They had fountain drinks and bottled horchata and Jamaica and lemonade and Mexican coke and sprite. There is no restrooms. Prices are fair since everything is pretty high up there now a days. They do add cheese to the burritos which was not in the description that was a fail for me cause I don't like cheese on my burritos and they also don't have rice. The service was okay because they were really busy with mainly online orders. The food wasn't the best to be honest everything was a little too salty not a spot that I would say hey I'm craving tacos 1986.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Went on Sunday late morning. They were semi busy, a lot of to go orders but we were the only ones sitting to eat there. 1st time here, was super excited. The cashier was just blank face No hi, no how can I help you, no nothing/ I order our food, exited to try it because I love tacos!!! And this place is all over IG They take forever to serves us, the cashier with the two cooks just talking and talking. There were so loud and just talking nonsense. We finally get our food, it looks super good and once I take my first bite the damn tortilla is cold. My husband tacos tortillas were cold too! The meats were ok-isk. Nothing special, lack of seasoning. Salsa station was messy, so that made it look unappetizing. It was such a disappointment. Never going here again and not even to the other locations. This was enough to not even want to try another location. I could have made the tacos and the salsa at my house myself and with better well taste! Don't waist your time and money here. There's plenty of other taco spots that taste way better and have better environment.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
If you stand at the counter to order they ignore you for a couple minutes then tell you to order online or at the ipad they have. I asked for a water cup - no water unless you buy a bottle. This location was dirty with food crumbs and salsa on the counters and floors. Kind of just a dump with medium priced tacos.
google avatar

Clarissa V.

Yelp
Vampiro was A**. The guac had browned. The rice tasted weird idk maybe it was left overs ?? The only good thing are the tacos that's it.

Camille C.

Yelp
I originally never went here but decided to try through uber eats , i have uber one so get promotions often...I tried it out . The first experience was great i was honestly amazed how I went so long with out trying but i dont like places that turn franchise .... The last 3 times i ordered I believed they half assed it being the have a bogo they just serve old stuff from the day before to collect and take advantage of the promotion every time its a promotion expect old and dry food !! Tortilla stale meat dry they just throw it in the bag i recommend going in but seriously $5 a taco go to your local vendor places like this take advantage of the same people who made them special save yourself the hassle not worth the price lacks flavor 'salt' and it from what my natives told me the slacked for years .... You can find a taco with way more flavor and excellent customer service going to your local tio i dont care what you heard dont fall for the hype .....
google avatar

Destiney B.

Yelp
We ordered via uber. Our delivery service was great. However, the food itself is dry and Tacos 1986 are known for their sauces and cucumbers... we paid a decent price to have it delivered and to be lackluster in terms of quality is disappointing to say the least. You have a community of people who need delivery for a plethora of reasons and should have a way to create the same experience for all customers. Shame on you.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
It was fine. I did not like the vegetarian mushroom taco. It was slimy and didn't have much flavor. The carne asada and chicken were okay. I liked the salsa bar. But I probably won't be coming back.
google avatar

Angelo N.

Yelp
Disappointed, ordered 2 taco combo asada. Meat was chunky with a lot of cartilage and also cold. Rice was dry and cold while beans were hot, need to serve better
google avatar

Rafael C.

Yelp
Being Mexican, it takes a lot for me to be impressed by tacos. Just about any place can make a regular taco and it'll be enough to get that taco craving. But this place just about knocked me off my chair when I took that first bite. I ordered the adobada and carne asada tacos and let me just say... They were unlike any other taco I've had before. Everything about the taco complimented the flavor so much. From the tortilla, to the guac, to every salsa I put on it. The adobada came out tasting really well and had the perfect amount of crunch to it. Originally I ordered three tacos but ended up getting up for two more. Definitely my favorite taco place in California thus far 10/10
google avatar

Christian P.

Yelp
Ordered via Uber Eats, waited over an hour and cycled through 3 delivery drivers before they canceled the order because the restaurant didn't have the order prepared.

Ashley P.

Yelp
I ordered from GrubHub tacos were OK but half my order was missing. Tried to call the store and talk to them about it and just got told that they put everything in the bag and that I was wrong. The bag was stapled, so nothing was taken out. I also complained that the salsa was barely filled. It looked like it had been used For $.50 each. You'd think they'd at least fill the cups halfway. Overall will not be returning because of customer service.

R. E.

Yelp
Rotten Salsa! It was bubbling as I was getting it. The health department should look into this! Disgusting! I hope I don't get sick! The carne asada has a weird smell! Never going here again ever!!!!
google avatar

Jorge C.

Yelp
Overpriced and not very tasty. Stopped here for lunch, there's much better Mexican food around.

Brandon C.

Yelp
The only place that refuses to make your Uber eats orders. The only place that will cancel your order, and tell the driver you canceled, then admit it was them. There's other tacos out there that can get my money. 1 star for this place
google avatar

Stephanie

Yelp
The tacos are really tasty but not consistent. Sometimes the quesadillas are cold. Overall it's a good place and I go all the time.
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
Great service, tacos never disappoint and some of the best horchata I've ever had. This is my go to spot after a hike...gotta earn the deliciousness.
