The 16 Best Bars and Restaurants in MIdtown Houston | Eater Houston

"Tacos A Go Go’s customizable breakfast tacos (which include vegetarian options, too) are arguably one of the best ways to start a day in Midtown. When it isn’t morning, go for the classic street tacos (especially the pork and chicken guisado) and a pile of totchos." - Brittanie Shey

Google
One of my favorite taco spots and I can luckily walk there! My favorite is the breakfast taco with egg whites, potatoes and onions. They have many vegan and vegetarian items available and you can customize almost everything on their menu. Interesting decor. Visually stimulating. They have karaoke every Friday too.

Google
Was in the area and stopped by here to grab a quick bite. The service was great, the cashier/server was super helpful with our questions! We got about 4 tacos and the chips and salsa, the tacos were quite big and the chips and salsa were very good. I personally thought the tacos were okay, and I also wished the sauce bar had a spicier sauce, but that is completely personal preference! Overall, the restaurants vibe was very nice and aesthetic, will definitely be back! :)

Google
Absolutely love this spot! The service is always amazing — everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The food is great, and the vibe is even better. Definitely check it out on Fridays for karaoke from 7 to 11 PM — it’s such a fun time. Highly recommend!

Google
Isabella does NOT need to work here, all the other employees have great attitudes. She is the downfall of the establishment, first she puts customers on hold and forgets then when we call back she tells us she was busy. I walk into the establishment only one customers sitting eating, then I ask for my order and she says she doesn’t want to give it and literally walks away leaving me at the counter ! WORSE IVE EVER HAS EXPERIENCED AT TACOS A GO GO AND I visit multiple locations ! Do better Isabella unacceptable treatment to customers !

Google
I got the brisket and fish taco plate (rice and black refried beans) it was good! The staff is super friendly and helpful.

Google
Man oh man, the only problem here is I didn't know about this place sooner. The food was out fast and tasted amazing! If you told me to describe the taste of the ideal Tex-Mex burrito, this is a very accurate representation. Plus, it was huge man! I got big hands and you can see my hand in the picture. I was very full. The restaurant itself was very clean and casual to the point I'd feel comfortable eating there anytime whether I was coming straight from work or the couch, but not so casual I'd fear for my life while doing so.

Google
We came here for a college get together a day send-off for current students. They were very accommodating to my group. Super nice. I didn't eat so I can't vouch for the food or drinks.

Google
Such a cute little place. Came here for lunch. The staff treated us and were so friendly and patient as we looked at the menu. We both got salads and were so pleased with the price, speed of service, and the good food. They weren’t too busy at lunch which was nice too.

Yelp
Service was great, friendly and fast! The place is cool, tons of local events up on the billboard and bright colors making it feel both fun and comfortable. The food is where it really shines though, I got the Tater Taco and the Baja Chicken Taco and they were hands down one of the best things I've eaten in the past year. The Tater Taco had a unique taste and the black beans were warm and delicious, it was a perfect choice for a non-meat taco!! The Baja Chicken Taco tasted as expected- fried chicken and a lime-y avocado, fresh tasting and the chicken had a great texture (from someone who is picky about chicken & meat textures). I asked for no jalapeños but that's personal preference, I'm sure they would be a nice addition for those who like jalapeño flavor. My partner got the Carne Guisada Tacos and said they were filling and exactly what she wanted from a good taco.

Yelp
Street parking, great kitsch interior, good menu. Nice service. I really like al pastor here as well as the picadillo. As Arnold once said, I will be back.
google avatar

Mal M.

Yelp
Incredibly fresh and fast service. The salads were 10/10. Quiet on a Wednesday for lunch and lots of tables available.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Did not enjoy these tacos, honestly some of the worst I've had. The location is in a sketch area as well. Got the barbacoa and pollo guisado tacos. The meat was tender, but barely seasoned and the tacos were bland. There was barely any toppings either, just a lot of meat in a tortilla. Was quite disappointed as the online reviews were great. My friend didn't like her impossible meat taco either.
google avatar

Yelp
I love these tacos. This should be your go to take out taco when you are down in the financial district. The place itself in one of the tunnel food courts. The restaurant is small with limited seating, but the food has flavors that are bold and the tacos are large. The food is delivered quickly, lines move fast, the staff is friendly but always busy. Everything is absolutely delicious. My recommendations are the shrimp and the brisket taco.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Vibe- Nice size restaurant in Midtown that sells tacos, quesadillas, nachos and more! There's only inside seating available but there's plenty. They have many vegan options on their menu which is always a huge plus for me :) Customer service- Amazing! The lady that took my order was super sweet and helpful. She even came around checking on customers to see how their food and experience were. Food/drinks- I got chips + guacamole, a tater tot w/o sour cream and queso taco, and a pastor falso taco w/o queso on a corn tortilla (vegan taco options!!) Parking- The parking can be kind of difficult, but if you're lucky you can find a spot on the street near the restaurant.

Yelp
My friends and I stumbled upon this cute Tex-mex spot when we were in Houston. We initially wanted to Breakfast Klub around the corner but the line was super long. I ordered the pastor taco and breakfast burrito with a cinnamon coffee the service was so fast and everything was delicious. Absolutely recommend!

Yelp
Okay misleading...as looking at the pictures and menu I thought I have finally found Mexican burritos, I don't know what is it about Texas they always have to put sour cream lettuce and tomato to burritos that's not how we do it in Mexico, so when I see a called Mexican restaurant sell the Tex nex version of burritos I get so mad No need to say anything else .... I mean the place is cool definitely reminded me of the market food back in Mexico but maybe I'll come back for the tacos this burrito ain't it
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
Tacos were ok, I needed more flavor and better quality tortillas. Red salsa and lime agua fresca was good.

Jake G.

Yelp
Good food, sometimes they'll give you the wrong order but I don't really mind since they're always polite.
google avatar

Lanre M.

Yelp
To be honest, I wasn't quite satisfied with my taco , but I don't believe it was their fault. I was in a bit of a rush that morning, so I'll need to give them another chance. Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed the service and the ambiance of the place.
google avatar

Yelp
I ate here last week during a performance break at the MATCH. The tacos were so delicious. Their flavors are immaculate. I had the carnitas taco and the shrimp taco. Both were delicious. I definitely want to come back and try more tacos.
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast tacos, great hot sauce selection. Food runners got a bit confused and took some of our food to the wrong table so there was some delay there, oh well. Location right on the red line is perfect for breakfast before catching the train down to NRG for a noon Texans game. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Im sure I sound like a bad Dr. Seuss book whenever I talk about this place. Flour, corn, and more. These tacos I do Adore. I love their lamb and the pastor tacos. They're great for breakfast tacos too. Whenever I have out of town guests I always sneak out early to bring them back some tacos from tacos A go go. I would eat them before a concert at the continental, I would eat them all day if I could.

Yelp
My husband and I tried the breakfast tacos today and were impressed. He got an egg, bacon and cheese and an egg, refried beans, chorizo taco (on flour tortillas). I got an egg, chorizo and cheese and a beans, cheese and rice taco (on flour tortillas). The tortillas are great. The beans are creamy and the perfect consistency. The tacos with egg were good but next time I would ask for less egg bc that flavor took over. They have 4 different types of salsa and they are delicious! The service was friendly.

Laz D.

Yelp
Big portion tacos! Very good value, florvors, and homemade salsas. Taco stand is comparable but the sizes there are smaller.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good! Meet tasted fresh and seasoned well Not overly stuffed and they bring to your car
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast tacos, particularly the Vegan Verde Breakfast Tacos. The grilled veggies in those are really delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is amazing and customer service felt like home! I would recommend this as the first Houston taco spot to stop at! The inside vibes are cool as well.

Yelp
I'm not a huge taco gal but occasionally I have a craving. This is a solid option for Taco Tuesday or any other day that tacos are desired. They have a pretty large taco menu, with something for everyone (including plant-based meats for vegans). I tried: ~Verde. Kudos for having a veggie-heavy taco -- it was delicious and felt healthy. ~Shrimp. Really tasty -- the shrimp had a great texture. ~Grilled chicken. Simple but good. ~Brisket. Not the most tender meat but still yummy. I really appreciated that they offered whole wheat tortillas (at a 25 cent charge). Online ordering (via their website) was very straightforward. I sent my boyfriend to grab the to-go order so I didn't get to see the interior. From the photos, the decor looks fun. Maybe one day I'll swing by in-person.

Yelp
Having ordered Tacos A Go Go for takeout after a rather long and fun night out I found some great things: the friendly staff that was super knowledgeable, placing my order was a breeze and I loved how each taco came individually labeled as this made it super simple in knowing which was what. So why only three stars? Let's take a look- While service was stellar the food was a bit hit and miss TBH. The chips and queso (add guacamole) were top tier. They were fresh, hot, delicious. This item really hit the spot! The tacos on the other hand, while hot and fresh weren't overly delicious. I had three various tacos all on whole wheat tortilla and I would personally avoid the whole wheat tortillas in the future as they were gummy and flavorless. The tacos were filled to the brim which I really appreciated and when I went from eating each item taco style to employing the assistance of a fork the meal improved. The fillings were also hot and fresh but a bit under-seasoned and bland. They required salt for sure but this wasn't anything that some of the incredible queso could fix...or at the very least cover-up. I also loved the green salsa as it added a nice fresh kick to the tacos. Could I find myself ordering/visiting Tacos A Go Go again? Possibly! There was a lot of good happening here: service, chips, queso, salsa. If I do visit again I would deff avoid the whole wheat tortillas and go for a standard flour tortilla as well as having salt and pepper on standby. Either way: thank you Tacos A Go Go as at the end of the day you did exactly what I needed: saving me from the lasting effects of a long and debaucherous night out and for that I am eternally grateful.

Yelp
So gooold the chorizo was amazing 10 out of 10 recommendation definitely should go to this location

Yelp
My coworker and I decided to order lunch and I desperately wanted a quesadilla. I choose this place from Grubhub and it was the best decision ever. I ordered at 11:11 AM and it was delivered by 11:37 AM. It was hot and fresh. We both loved our food and he actually wished he had ordered a second one. The sauces were delicious and hot just like I like it. The only thing is they forgot my lettuce for my quesadillas but no biggie. I will definitely order again real

Yelp
The inside is beautiful. Not in a grandiose type of way. But in a vintage feel type of way. Customer service was great. Quick and easy. Food came quickly as well. That's pretty much all. The tacos were very subpar for the price. You can find the same quality street tacos at any truck for $1. The tortillas are not that great either. 6 tacos, chips and salsa with a drink will run you over $30. And no, chips and salsa is not complimentary. Very very overpriced for the quality of food.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for tacos! We've been to multiple locations of Tacos A Go Go now and have yet to have a bad experience. Breakfast tacos here come with eggs + two fillings, and my go to combo is the bacon and refried beans. For lunch, my favorite taco is the pastor. This comes with sliced pork fajita marinated in their guajillo, morita, & ancho chile sauce, along with onions and pineapple. I also really like the barbacoa. Our only complaint is that the prices are a bit expensive depending on what you order, but I feel like the consistent quality makes up for that.
google avatar

Disco B.

Yelp
The brisket taco is AMAZING! This is one of my favorite places for a quick taco fix.

Crystal P.

Yelp
Second time trying and it is just not it! The service is good, everyone is really nice & chill. I was expecting so much better but they're just overhyped tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
The Best Sea-Food Taco I have ever had. Period! If your in Midtown and can visit/order from this place; do so... You won't be dissatisfied!

Yelp
tacos are okay. service is bad, i ordered online on a slow tuesday morning. i came in maybe 5 minutes before my pick up time and the lady behind the counter told me a few more minutes. No worries, i sat down next to the counter and just waited on my phone for a bit. I realized i was waiting a really long time, i only ordered one breakfast taco. after about 15 minutes of sitting i walked up to the counter and asked if my order was ready. a new older woman at the cashier just kind of stared at me and then after what seemed like 10 secs of staring she asked for my name. I gave her my name and she turned around and handed me my order that's been sitting there for 15 mins. It's not a big deal except i was the only person in the store except for another couple eating their tacos. I was in a hurry too so definitely not going to this place anymore because of the lack of service!

Brian C.

Yelp
one of the best original Mexican restaurants around this area. Excellent authentic Mexican cuisine, great service.

Yelp
Really good food & fast service very cool breakfast spot that won't break the bank a good stop before you go shopping
google avatar

Anjoli F.

Yelp
Such a great texmex chain! Fun and kitschy decor and great menu. Twas nice just sitting at the window watching the metro rail whiz by while stuffing my face with these beautiful vegetarian breakfast tacos. Parking for this location is not so good but worth the visit. Great selection of salsas and nice staff too!
google avatar

Carmen C.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Very cool unique spot! Nice friendly staff. Tacos were delicious and that green sauce!!! Also must try the coffee black (so good)!! If your looking for a chill spot this is the place!!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place, the food is incredible, my go to used to be a pork belly taco that they had but I didn't not see it on the menu today so I got a pastor. It was so very delicious. Sweet from the pineapple and I use the fuego hot sauce. So great. They have the cutest decor inside and a salsa bar with all homemade salsas. My boyfriend got the shredded chicken taco and my son got chips and queso. Everything was great. The cashier was super friendly and gave us a free queso because she said she forgot to give it to us intentionally. I have been here several times and everything I've ever had is delicious. They have Mexican cokes too in two different sizes. Just be careful. I usually park across the street but it's not the greatest area and we saw some suspicious guys lurking around the cars over there.
google avatar

Yelp
There is so many different options on this menu - I was SO overwhelmed! Usually, I like to prepare myself and look at the menu before hand, but the boyfriend and I wanted to try a new breakfast place once I got off work, and he suggested here. It was not crowded at all on a Wednesday morning at 8AM, we literally were the only customers - and I loved that it was so empty. The lady at the register was so so sweet and patient with us when we were ordering, she even suggested items to order. Everything we had was great!!! We ordered: - bacon, potato, cheese breakfast tacos - chorizo breakfast tacos - pork belly breakfast tacos - barbacoa tacos I will say there is quite a lot of eggs on the breakfast tacos, next time I should say easy eggs. We love the green sauce!!! Also the horchata is great to wash down the tacos :) I want to try the street tacos next! We really devoured them.. as I am typing this, I'm thinking of wanting more tacos!
google avatar

John I.

Yelp
I tried the bacon and chorizo breakfast tacos, pollo guisado taco, and pastor burrito. All the tacos were delicious. The breakfast tacos hit the spot and were bursting with flavor. The pollo guisado taco was also flavorful and delicious but the chicken was slightly dry. The other meat options were better. The best thing I tried was for sure the pastor burrito. The pastor is the best I've had in recent memory and it's a must try. The salsas on the side were also paired very nicely with everything. Also, the employees were all very nice and friendly. To top it off, the vibes and decor of the restaurant were awesome. There were fun statues, paintings, signs, and pictures everywhere with cool string lights.
google avatar

Yelp
Get the tachos!! Nachos with tater tots - don't forget to add meat. Oh and the margaritas are fire
google avatar

Sammia J.

Yelp
Just touched down from airport and we wanted some good food. Friend recommended. Food was really good. Service was great, food didnt take long to come out, staff was attentive w recommendations. Nice vibe loved the decorations
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
This is my $5 breakfast taco. It looks larger in the picture than it actually was. Maybe the size of a babies fist. Inflations sucks but this is ridiculous. Stay clear of this place. This should have been a $2 taco, max.
google avatar

Joseph V.

Yelp
This little tacos a gogo location is convenient to walk to from our place, friendly service, and an efficient staff in the kitchen getting orders out in a very reasonable amount of time. All in all, this is a solid lunch or dinner spot with tasty food that won't break the bank. My favorite is definitely getting a chips and queso blanco along with a pastor taco on flour, absolutely delicious. If you have not been here, I'd highly consider making a trip over for some tasty grub.
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
‍food to go Service was great the cashier was friendly and had suggestions. The tacos were not as good... I tried the verde vegan taco and and the pollo guisado on corn; rice and black beans; yellow queso and chips, and both flavors margaritas. Chips/queso, black beans, and the margarita were really good nothing spectacular but very solid 4.5 stars. The rice was definitely old and lacked flavor. It was hard and overall sad. 2 stars The tacos were 3 starts the chicken isn't marinated before boiling and it lacks the depth of stewed chicken. The verde could have been bomb because the veggies were cooked to perfection; however it was too spicy to finish. Maybe try different items and learn from my mistake, but that was supposed to be dinner and I don't want to eat queso all night but I couldn't finish the tacos.
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
A good taco stop with fresh salsa bar it's near the tram on mail st Around the corner is a wonderful record shop , I enjoyed shopping
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Tacos were fantastic! Tasted fresh to order. Planning to return to try some of the more adventurous options.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Tacos were great. Nachos with beef added were even better than I expected. Really really good. The only thing I didn't care for is you put the tip first. I added 20% but then I have to get up to get refills, condiments, etc. It was worth it though. It really was great food and the employees are nice.

Clare F.

Yelp
Oh where do I start... while on a journey to stave off hunger I stumbled upon something that did so much more. The queso and chips awoke a warmth inside me that was dormant until that warm cheese filled my stomach, the frozen strawberry margarita opened my eyes to how funny things could be, and the tacos gave me what I needed. The spice of my chosen tacos serves me as a needed reminder that things feel better if you break a sweat to get there. Always ask for extra chips and never forget to stir your flavored marg XOXO
google avatar

Woo K.

Yelp
Honestly I feel like this place is such a good tacos "to go to" place. It's not the best. But it's pretty good. It's not always busy. No crazy lines. Decor is lovely. Food comes out quick. I feel satisfied after. Kind of a win.
google avatar

Kristin A.

Yelp
Not fancy by any stretch - a little a seedy (in a good way) even. Some seats are worn, some look newer but hey, esthetics aren't the reason you come here. The menu isn't overloaded with pages of options but they also don't just stop at tacos. I'll have to check out the rest at some point because the 3 times I visited, I got chicken tacos. They were muy delicioso! So much so, the 3 times I visited were in the same week! I should be embarrassed but I'm not...actually disappointed I didn't make it in a 4th time. The salsas were fresh and so were the chips. So good! I found street parking each time I came but I could see this being an issue during busy hours. Luckily, there's a parking garage across the street should you want to dine in. I'll see ya there!!
google avatar

Brianna M.

Yelp
So glad I came across this restaurant while visiting Houston this past weekend. I went around 7p and it wasn't busy. I ordered the chips + queso blanco, beef quesadillas, and a mango margarita. All of it was delicious! My food was also served pretty quickly and the atmosphere was chill. I would absolutely go back if in midtown Houston again!
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
They left out my brisket... that's like almost 4 dollars lost. I really wanted that brisket too.. I'm sad now.

Gevais J.

Yelp
Tacos aren't supposed to bland and these have no flavor at all! Has anyone heard of salt and pepper. The pastor taco had a some spice but still tasteless. I'm very disappointed.
