25 Iconic Dishes That Define Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Seeing a spinning tornado of marinated pork is a clear sign you’ve arrived at Leo’s. So is seeing a mob of people gathered around a brightly lit taco truck. This family-run al pastor operation consists of a dozen trucks across LA, all of which attract late-night crowds like moths to porch lights. Watch the taqueros skillfully carve caramelized meat onto tortillas with a flick of pineapple, and always order one more taco than you think you need." - garrett snyder, brant cox, cathy park, sylvio martins, jess basser sanders

Google
“Authentic flavors and juicy meat! Tacos Al Pastor serves up perfectly seasoned tacos with fresh toppings. Quick service and great value — a must-try for taco lovers.”

David S.

Google
Friendly folks behind the counter. Good torta, not great, but not bad at all. Good bread, but tastes more like a hamburger bun than what I am used to. Good homemade Pina!

Paulina

Google
Simple but done right! Friendly service and the little seating at the back adds to the vibe. The green and red sauces were divine. I recommend the lengua tacos and beef nachos. Let me add that taco is only $2.50 each (except camaron and pescado)..

Being from NY, my bucket list included having authentic street tacos 🌮 in LA. Driving along Santa Monica Blvd I spotted Tacos Al Pastor and made the precison U-turn. $1.25 fresh tacos of all kinds!! (beef, pork, chicken, sausage, fish...) I ordered three and grabbed a seat in the back area. A squeeze of Lime and several hot sauces from the cooler topped off these delicious tacos. Totally recommended for a quick bite. Legit!

Google
I got the carnitas tacos and the California Burrito and noticed that the meat in all items were on the dry side. The pick de gallo was also a bit dry, if that makes any sense. I did like the California Burrito which is a regular burrito with French fries in it! This might be available at many other places but it was my first and I liked it. I might go back to try the breakfast burritos but not terribly keen on the tacos so far.

K S.

Google
This is a great neighborhood spot. I love stopping in for some tacos and a jamaica!

Google
I drove by this place for years without ever stopping which is a shame, because I was depriving myself of the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. Order it with chorizo and green salsa- it's perfect.

Tatiana T.

Google
the red salsa made my tacos so much better. and they were already good. small tables outside. accepts cash and card. ask for limes tho they don't give them automatically.

Yelp
They are not in business for so long without good reason. Good place to pick up a afternoon taco.

Yelp
These are by far the worst tacos I've ever had in LA. All of the meats were so dry it felt like they had just wrung out all the juices. The food all felt microwaved, no one was cooking as we waited outside. I wasn't aware that fries could be tasteless until I tried these. Not to mention it is $2.50 for each trash taco Go literally anywhere else

Yelp
I tried this location last minute for the first time because it was super close to me and I personally thought it was sooo delicious! The meat was flavorful and juicy. Idk what the other reviews are talking about it being dry, but when I went and bought myself a burrito the juiciness of the meat was perfect and not oily. All of the workers were also nice and welcoming. Once you come in they instantly greet you with a smile and the place was real clean. Every time I'm in the area I know exactly where to go for some good service, tasty tacos and burritos now!

Yelp
I was excited to try Tacos Al Pastor. I pulled into the tiny parking lot. I asked about combo meals for a burrito and all the guy did was point at the menu on the wall for the taco combo. I ordered the al pastor burrito for $9. It comes with a tiny bag of chips and red salsa. They do take card. I cut the burrito in half and it wasn't pastor. I got a carne asada filling and it was salty. The tortilla chips were stale. The salsa was good and spicy. I'd rather go to La Reyna for my usual. The small bag did include a napkin. I can cross this place off my list.

Yelp
Aloha to all who take the time to read compliments or complaints... This will be a compliment...cuz I am currently high and enjoying this fuud. I "high"ly recommend everyone eat here while it's operating hours... ...especially for my financially delinquent fellow Stand-Up Comedian's that go across the street to train at the hidden minor comedy club called "Third Wheel." Please don't follow me on instagram @callahanwelsh_ as I am Los Angeles's worst Stand-Up Comedian.

Yelp
If not for the lack of parking, I think this place would be ideal. It is street parking only and in this area it's not very easy to find available spaces (at least in my experience). Service is froendly. I really like their tacos al pastor, de carnitas, and asada. It is here that I was introduced to aleternative flavors like buche, lengua, and cabeza. And I loved them also. Aside from tacos they also prepare other good eats like quesadillas, sincronizadas, sopes, and burritos mojados. All worth ordering.
google avatar

Amie L.

Yelp
I know this might sound crazy but, this place has one of the best cheeseburgers ever , I mean the best I've had ever had from anywhere, really! I would've never thought of ordering a burger at a taco place but one day I was about to walk up to the widow, a girl jumps out of a car filled with other people and orders just one, ONE, 1 cheeseburger meal. I thought well these, burgers must be great cause it sounds like a special order! Which I ordered it and yes it was super delicious and the fries are on point!!! Totally recommend this taco spot for a cheeseburger!
google avatar

Gleicyane G.

Yelp
This was always a favorite of mine. I would say it was my go to taqueria when I lived in the area. They were consistently good and very friendly. They had the best tacos de lengua I have ever had. In the back they have some tables. The only negative thing is the parking. Street parking only. You would think the lot right behind them would have some spots but it is all for the laundromat.
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
Chips sidled along the gigante vegan burrito I devoured after my first workout in two years! They had no guac but offered avocado which is related. W/squeeze bottle red and green (salsa) offered at the table I was all set! This thumbtack of a taco shack is pinned to the bz SMB corner, like a cactus pear! The patio/tool shed is homey and the cashier may have starred in a few border tale films..
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Started excited, but found out the Al Pastor isn't directly off the spit - not my style. Decent and solid neighborhood spot, but it's not Leo's. El al pastor es desafortunadamente guisado, y no directo deal trompo.
google avatar

Jared K.

Yelp
4 stars is a joke. I love cheap Mexican. Everything I ordered here tastes like there is actual poison inside. Inedible.
google avatar

Diana W.

Yelp
CASH only. My favorite quick go to local tacos in the area. Lengua!! PS their 2 sauces are super spicy. Been coming here for years and just realized I had never written a review. Step on up on the little stool and tell the guy what you want. Speak slowly, and in easy terms. It's a simple quick joint.

Yelp
A worthy fix for a street taco craving, and this is coming from a picky Mexican taco lover. I always say the salsa makes the taco, and theirs did not disappoint. The salsa roja was spicy and flavorful; I doused all of mine with it. Order two al pastor, one carne asada, and one carnitas. Friend also tried buche. The al pastor and carne asada were very good, but the carnitas was not the best I've had by far. I found them to be a little dry. Friend said buche was good but I didn't get to taste. We ended up going by happy accident on Tuesday, and they DO have taco Tuesday, so all the tacos were $1 instead of $1.50. I ordered four plus a large horchata and it was $7 total! No tax! Be advised though, it is CASH ONLY. If my friend hadn't been carrying, my millennial debit-card-carrying ass would've been screwed. There's a couple of tables outside but no indoor part to speak of, really just a window you order at. Would probably just go to pick up next time, it was in a not so well-lit part of town. Overall thought very very pleased!!

Yelp
Got the vegetarian burrito and it was delicious! The lady was soo nice and I was thrilled to see that they had the coke/sprite in those tall glasses, such a classic drink to be eating with all kinds of dishes they had on the menu. But I got the squirt soda. After I ordered, they have their seatings around the back of the building with shades for people to feast inside, so I went there and thats also where they bring out the food to you if you're dining in - if you're just picking it up, they have few seatings out front where you make your order there as well. There were only three people that had ordered the food so my burrito came out in five minutes - perfectly soft but toasted tortilla wrapped with delicious simple veggies, beans, and cheese. Their sauces, splendid, the drink I ordered, incredibly sugary but splendid, and the french fries that I of course had to get it, were as well splendid.

Robert B.

Yelp
Moved to Los Angeles in 2013 into this neighborhood from Louisville, KY. Hit the taco truck nearby a LOT as we were night people, into underground techno, after hours etc. FINALLY one day I went to this incredible yellow stand to try it out... Holy moly had we been missing out. This is still my favorite taco shop in all of LA after all these years. Proximity is nice - but I still have not found a permanent spot that comes close to this. Wet burrito FTW!!
google avatar

Judy T.

Yelp
Pretty tasty and friendly staff! They do have a vegetarian burrito which is pretty good with rice and beans and avocado. It comes with chips for $6. My friends got the pastor tacos with pineapple and said they were one of the best they've had. Definitely authentic and delicious. At first they didn't have salsa bottles out near the condiments (cucumber slices were available though). After we asked they brought out a squirt bottle each of green and red salsa. Yay! I especially noted how my burrito tortilla was grilled perfectly with a slight crisp at the edges.
google avatar

JaNae C.

Yelp
I love this place! They have an awesome $1 deal on taco Tuesday that's heavenly and the next day is $1 fish taco weds. The fish is breaded and absolutely delicious. It's open late and is a sure thing that my whole family enjoys going to and sitting in the back patio area to eat. If you dine in the back, there is a little easy to miss set up with salsas, pico and limes. The salsas taste very fresh and delicious. I come here at least once every 2 weeks. It's a must try if you're in the area. I haven't had a bad experience here with anything. The food is great, and the workers are very efficient and nice and the patio is usually pretty clean.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Okay... the area is ghetto. The people who hang around there... kinda ghetto... but I have to say... the food is pretty good. I got A Pastor tacos and burrito and I gobbled it up. You get two tacos for that one price! It was good - especially with the Salsa verde sauce. THAT IS SPICY. I'm Thai. I KNOW my spices. The burrito is big for $5. I really liked it. I cut it in half and ate it for lunch the next day. I just don't like the area but the food and the service is fine. NOTES: * CASH ONLY * Parking on street - be careful - busy street! Cars going back and forth! * Nice people * Kinda ghetto... so be careful * Get the Salsa Verde if you like Spicy!

Yelp
These guys are so Naco they actually made their business sign and painted the building "EL" Pastor instead of Al Pastor, they have since changed it but you can still see that it was done wrong, unfortunately they cook the same way they spell and I have no idea has this place has a 4-Star average rating. They do have a nice menu and a good selection of meats, unfortunately the four I tried were OK to horrible. Tacos - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/AfjDejIQnCOhFFMxZFWExQ?select=nrrf655y6nCo_7zoY-mksQ $1.25 AL yes AL Pastor - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/AfjDejIQnCOhFFMxZFWExQ?select=ns0V53LsofNqS_4gl0aVlg Now I really don't know why you'd name your business this in the first place but if your going to, then that should blow me away and be the best tasting thing you have!, not here it's totally lacking in flavor. 2-Stars Carne Asada - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/AfjDejIQnCOhFFMxZFWExQ?select=wpMP00CNO4z6ww2vJH6MlQ Another lackluster effort at some tacos, fatty and flavorless! 2-Stars Lengua - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/AfjDejIQnCOhFFMxZFWExQ?select=cUTyV0NbF4ozi6bo5_LQYA this was the worst of the tacos I had, a mushy mess............. 1-Star but if I could give it ZERO I would. Buche ( Dorado?? ) - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/AfjDejIQnCOhFFMxZFWExQ?select=0u5g7CFmpNATyIGWLOW7Wg Now I asked for it to be cooked dorado, which is grilled/fried until slightly crispy, this was soft like a noodle and lacking in any flavor! 2-Stars

Yelp
I don't know what it was. I am not a fan. I went late last night (sunday) and tried a total of 5 tacos: 2 al pastor 3/5: decent but flavors were unbalanced, temp. was cold 1 el pollo 1/5: Bland and nasty. One of the worse tacos I've ever had 1 carnitas 2/5: Meh Meh Meh 1 asada: 1.5/5: Dry Dry Dry Corn tortilla: EWWWW Green Sauce: Zero flavor I had strong hopes for the food after seeing the guy cooking the food in the front but then it went down hill from there. Around the corner their was food trays sitting outside exposed which is nasty. No salsa bar except for 5 dried up sliced radishes. A complete waste of money and ended up throwing away half of it even after trying to doctor it up. My advice is to skip this place. I should have went to the taco truck across the street there were actually people waiting around it.

Yelp
Cheap and delicious tacos. Everything was fresh. Very good and spicy sauce as well. Will be going back for more.
google avatar

Gary I.

Yelp
What happened??? I went back on Sunday, January 29thth around 10:30pm and ordered the Taco de Carnitas. This time the pork was dry and mealy with no porky goodness that I had the first time I came here. There was no light covering of green chile sauce around the carnitas either. I also ordered the taco de carne asada, but it was like any other...dry, hard and no beef flavour. The taco de lengua had a nice soft texture, but it wasn't braised in a flavourful sauce such as one used to made tinga. My guess is that different cooks on different shifts prepare the various meats in their own variations. Also, the quality of the meat varies because someone else procures the supply which is not checked for consistency in quality. So getting the taco de carnitas I had on my first visit is like going to Las Vegas on a gamble. I had high hopes for this place, but it looks as though it's not going to reach the high culinary level based on my first try there. But I'm glad I got to eat the "ultimate Carnitas" even though it was for only one time. Life sometimes has a way of being that way.
google avatar

Valerie N.

Yelp
Cheap and delicious food. I always go for shrimp/fish tacos. The best I've eaten so far in SoCal in quality-price-ratio
google avatar

Josue G.

Yelp
Hands down, best place EVER! My taco al pastor quest finally came to an end here at Tacos Al Pastor. I have tried other places, but their carne al pastor was either too dry and/or too fatty. The tacos al pastor are just right here! Meat it tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. My girlfriend and I are always looking forward to Friday nights as this is our stop for dinner. I recommend them to anyone and everyone! BTW... I think I have a taco addiction as I stroll passed here during the week hoping that the stand will be outside.
google avatar

Collin M.

Yelp
Just ate here today, highly underrated. Small place on the corner, got the shrimp taco and some nachos. Was very satisfied and would definitely come back anytime if I'm ever in this area craving some great Mexican food!

Joshua B.

Yelp
Always rude, at least that is consistent. I got a California Burrito, they threw old fries on the grill, put tons of pico to make sure the tortilla was soggy. A truly terrible cold mess. The taco truck, and the taco stand by Jon's are both miles better.
google avatar

Stephan Y.

Yelp
This place is soooooooooo guud. Another one of my favorite drunk spots to go to after the clubs or night of EDM. This place is so cool that it cooks and makes the tacos right in front of you!! The tacos here...are super delicious...as you can tell...the place is called "Tacos"....and can you guess which meat is the best tasting one?? *hint...look at the name. The salsa (red and green) are both very guud as well!. Although I've only had the tacos, the chicken is probably the worst...WHY? cuz the chicken taste VERY DRY...but looks delicious. Last night, I bought 4 chickens, 4 carne asadas, 4 chorizos, 4 carnitas, and 1 horchata.....the total was about $20. VERY WELL RECOMMENDED!! UNTIL THEN!! ^-^
google avatar

Vicky H.

Yelp
I only come to this place when I'm drunk and lazy ( it's super close to my house)! Other than that I wouldn't bother eating here! I don't know why it has the ratings it does! The last time I came I ordered a wet carne asada burrito hoping to come across something delicious on the menu but nope! Too damn spicy n taste less! Idk if I'll be coming back here but then again I always say that n come back!
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
The shrimp tacos tasted like they were made in old oil. Disgusting. Change your oil once in a while. The service was fast. Employees were friendly.
google avatar

Elmira M.

Yelp
$7 for a veggie burrito which is tortilla and rice and very little of something else which was so small hard to recognize (beans, maybe?) Won't be back.
google avatar

Susamoy A.

Yelp
I guess, the food wasn't that bad, but it was nowhere near good. Meat was frozen & never thrown on the grill. Griddle grilled meat & refrigerated 'fresh' vegies into burrito is not what I crave late night. I have had better burrito from taco trucks by the streets. I only had a burrito from there, maybe they have better items. But when they can't impress me with the simplest item, I don't think they can do better job with other items anyway. Never going back
google avatar

Marco C.

Yelp
Delicious tacos al pastor, cabeza and asada. Cash only. Now they are offering big quesadillas $6 any meat you want even hongos!
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
I will never deviate from the al pastor. The workers here are so sweet and welcoming. They always remember my order! Cash only!!!
google avatar

sloe j.

Yelp
Their salsa verde packs a punch of heat and a punch of fucking delicious. Tasty asada tacos late night for a $1 each? You fucking bet. Definitely better than El Gran Burrito down the street for eats at pretty much any hour of the day. EDIT: This place is easily a 5 on weekends when there's a pastor spit and grill out front. Maybe the best pastor I've ever had.
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
If pastor is in the name, then I'm am hoping that the goods that identify the namesake are amazing in that of themselves. So with only one way to find out, I pulled an impromptu U turn after passing by and decided to give this place a shot. While I might be starting to become picky about my pastor, I felt that there wasn't too much for the taste buds to notch up another order, just average in my opinion. The suadero was tender, but a little bit lackluster from what I was expected to get. The tacos ($1.25 each) do come topped in sweet salsa, which has a good flavor, but is extremely mild. Might stop back if I am in the area and starving, though I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
google avatar

Shorty P.

Yelp
Tacos Al Pastor is on the corner of Kingsley and Santa Monica Boulevard, right across the street from Kingsley Elementary School. It's a small taco stand that serves authentic Mexican food, and the guys running the place speak English. Best of all, it got an A rating (otherwise I wouldn't have bothered). All items are well priced. You can get gigantic burritos for $4 and tacos for $1.25 each. I got the chicken burrito which was made of at least a full breast (or more) of all-white meat (I couldn't believe it!!), no fat or gristle, chopped onions, rice, beans, cilantro, and some other herbs (I think). It was big and delicious, and I still can't believe it was only $4. I washed it down with their aguas frescas of the day, which on my day was made with melon. It was really good. For a medium cup, it was just $1. The salsas were pretty good, too. They serve two kinds: green (moderately spicy) and red (spicy). The guys running the place were really nice, and they give you sliced cucumbers if you request it, to cool the heat. Unfortunately, they don't serve the pickled sliced veggies or jalapenos. On the day I went, at least 12 people had ordered ahead of me within 10 minutes. I was expecting a long wait, but these guys were fast. I couldn't have waited longer than 10 minutes. If I lived in the area, I'd definitely go back for more!
google avatar

Derek R.

Yelp
I'll never regret the day I stopped ignoring this place. From my place on the edge of East Hollywood and Los Feliz, it's pretty much the same distance (if not closer) to a few other favorite spots. But, as it's not really next to anything unlike spots in Los Feliz, Silver Lake, etc., it never seemed to be a "while I'm out, I'll stop and grab a bite" location. Now I don't need to be nearby or passing by--it's definitely a destination unto itself...and for very good reason. First and most importantly, their food is excellent at any price...but fortunately, price is hardly an issue as it costs very little to get very full (and I'm a big eater). Like its menu, the service and outdoor dining area are simple and no frills, but adequate nonetheless. Some might be a bit turned off by the dining area and location (it's on a safe but tatty stretch of Santa Monica, on which you'll need to finding parking), but to me, that just makes it even better--it feels like a reliable neighborhood joint that makes it because it serves the community well.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
$1.25 Al Pastor Taco The flavor was good but it was a little fatty and lacked some of that good ole grease. Loaded with raw onion and cilantro. No pineapple though. Watery hot sauce and the smallest handful of chips. No condiment bar. Street parking only.
google avatar

Randy P.

Yelp
So far I've tried every type of taco and the carne asada burrito. They give very little meat and the care asada burrito is the worst I've ever had. Please try it. It's NOT carne asada meat. It's slow cooked beef chuck that is mashed with rice and beans. 80% of the burrito is rice and beans. The cabeza is dry and tough. How can it be dry and tough? It is from the fatty part of a cow's head!! The pastor meat is wet and steamed! Obviously they cook a batch in the morning and then slowly dribble out the load during the day. I'm gringo, but jeez, you don't have to treat us like idiots. If we're eating in East Hollywood, it probably means we know what we're doing.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
We got the breakfast burrito Especial, which basically includes everything you could ever want in a burrito. The hotdog was a surprise and added a smoky richness we haven't had yet. This burrito was good to the last drop- every single bite was amazing. The second best part was the red and green sauces. (Also, the tortilla chips were very fresh). You must get BOTH sauces. On our burrito quest, this was definitely the best one and I'm already craving it again... Best for price and flavor CASH ONLY!! Mmmmmmmmm...
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
Fantastic tacos just a few blocks from my crib. I have tried pretty much every taco on the menu and exceedingly enjoyed them all. All their house salsas are delightful, though some with more delicate tongues may find them too spicy. If you're scurred, stick with a little lime juice and some Tapatio or salt. It appears a lot of these reviews were written a few years ago. I assure you the taste and quality of the food has not diminished at all, however, they have bumped their prices up to a whopping buck twenty five ($1.25!) a taco. Still more than worth it, i assure you. MUCH better that any food you'll get up the street at El Gran. For those in the mood and with the pocket change for a more robust meal, El Pastor makes a couple different superb tortas. They also have other Mexican eats - their quesadilla is straight-forward and spot-hitting, and while I have yet to try their burritos, they seem totally serviceable. Finally, they seem to be open to the wee hours of the AM, so I'd wager if you're in the hood and stumbling home Friday or Saturday night, it would be an ideal place to swing by and grab some belly booze soaking tacos.
google avatar

Markeia M.

Yelp
Really great tacos! Much better than that place on Vine near Lexington. I usually stick to the Chorizo tacos and (of course) the Tacos al Pastor. (Well heck you wouldn't go to a place called Buffalo Wings to have a burger, right?) But their Chicken Tacos are also really good. I'm a huge fan of their Salsa Verde, very spicy and cilantro-tastic. Also they include plenty of limes, cucumbers and sometimes radish slices with each taco order. As far as I know they are cash-only, and mainly Spanish-speaking although I've never had a problem with any of my orders. Open until 1am most nights I believe. Street parking, plus a little lot mostly used by a laundromat and flower shop.
google avatar

Carly M.

Yelp
I love this place. I live right around the corner from here and it has become a staple of my diet. You can get a huge burrito for $4. (I rarely can finish it so I'll throw half of it in the fridge and I've learned that if you cook it in the oven reheats quite nicely.) They cook it quickly. Some nights they'll be cooking the meat out front on a spit. They've also never screwed up my order. Get the salsa verde. Amazing!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
"Freshly made" now I know why this place is empty and will never EVER spend a dime in this place, avoid it at all costs, they microwave their food... I literally watched as the chef put it in the microwave even though he knew I was looking, it's pathetic and it looks dirty... and their costumer service is poor as well... even the taco stands don't microwave their food... You're better off at a taco stand and you will also save yourself a couple of dollars! Imagine being such a sorry excuse for a "Chef" that you microwave your orders, go to El Zarape , it's literally down the street and they actually make their food fresh and it's delicous!
google avatar

Gus J.

Yelp
Excellent quality! Delicious and tasty! The burritos and tortas are the best! The salsa is one of the best I've tried. It's perfect!
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
This place makes the best veggie burrito I've ever had. I used to live right around the corner and would usually eat here between 5-10 times per week. If I am going to be anywhere within 15 miles of this place, I will make a detour to pick up one of these god damn delicious burritos. It's perfect. Best burritos ever. If you don't like Tacos Al Pastor, you're a fucking moron.

Daleene K.

Yelp
The make your own borritos and tacos are deliciouse. But they take too long to deliver. But service and food is good.
