"Both locations (Chandler and Phoenix) of Nadia Holguin and Armando Hernandez’s esteemed taqueria are packaging Chihuahuan-style specialties to-go, including tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and gorditas. Thankfully, all three of the salsas normally available at the chilled self-serve area now come in small plastic containers." - Chris Malloy

This is one of my favorite taquerias in the Phoenix area. Tacos Chiwas does Chihuahua style tacos, burritos, and gorditas. Their taco tortillas are a little different. Sort of a corn and flour hybrid. I need to ask and get the scoop next time I go. All the tacos at Tacos Chiwas are solid, but there are three things you really need to try when you come here. First, try a taco Chiwas. This is a popular street taco in Chihuahua with carne asada, diced ham, rajas (diced green chiles), and queso menonita (a soft shredded cheese similar to Monterey Jack that originated in the Mennonite communities of northern Mexico). Add a little salsa to each bite. They have three kinds of salsa, a typical red salsa taquera, a roasted green tomatillo salsa, and a creamy green salsa which is my fave. I’m not sure if it’s some sort of avocado salsa or not, but it is really tasty and has some heat in it. Second, you need to try one of their Gorditas. My favorite is the picadillo. It has ground beef sautéed with bits of potato, carrot, and onion, and some refried beans too. It’s delicious! The gordita shell is a thick version of the hybrid tortilla that they use on their tacos. It’s similar to an arepa or a pupusa, but thinner than both of those. The Rojas gordita is also very good and has strips of sautéed green chile and refried beans. The third thing you should try is one of their deshebrada burritos red or green. This is a typical Chihuahua style burrito with shredded meat and red or green chili sauce. If you haven’t tried Tacos Chiwas yet or if you like Chihuahua style tacos, you really need to stop by this place and give it a shot. Some of my favorite items are: Taco Chiwas ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Picadillo Gordita ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rajas Gordita ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Deshebrada Burrito (red or green, green is spicier) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My guide on how I use the 5 star system: ⭐️ = Not good ⭐️⭐️ = Not terrible, but would not get again ⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Solid, but I’d try something else before this again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Really liked it! You should try this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = Loved it! Must try I’ll make adjustments to my ratings after subsequent visits. If you see a .3 or .7 it means: .3 = Wasn’t as good the 2nd or last time I tried it .7 = This was better the 2nd or last time I tried it.

Very tasty little taco spot with it's own regional twist. Absolutely worth a try for their tortillas and gorditas alone - you're not going to find this style in many other joints. Largely unassuming restaurant otherwise, a few small tables to sit at. Well kept and clean. Will definitely stop by when I'm in the area again

I thought I would try this Chandler location since I was in the area. I was not disappointed. I ordered three different gorditas and some of the red salsa. Truly delicious! Loved... big time.

These are some of the best Taco's around. Absolutely delicious. The staff is always friendly and helpful, they remember you, and get it right every single time. I go at least once a week since finding them. Seriously good stuff.

Food was amazing. I was worried about how long it would take for me to be served because it was during my lunch hour. I had enough time to eat and enjoy. Ordered a Carne desebrada Roja and Rajas gordita. Both were amazing. That rojas gordita cleaned up my sinuses good. But as spiced out as I was I couldn't stop eating it. Always good service and food when I come.

Go for the food, not the ambiance. The taco meats are in large chunks so you actually feel like you're biting into something. Once you do take a bite you'll come back for more. It's really good. It gets busy at lunchtime, and there is limited seating. They could use two more tables outside since there is only one right now. Well worth your time, and a great addition to the shopping plaza.

The tacos are amazing. The salsas are to die for. My favorite are the tacos de lengua and the tacos de tripas. The tripas were crispy but not over cooked. And the lengua news firm yet tender. I can't wait to go back. I also the barbacoa. I was blown away. This place is definitely one of my favorite taco spots in the valley.
