The Best Restaurants Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Tacos de Acapulco is a go-to among Cal Poly students for its just-off-campus location and generously portioned dishes. The menu is expected, but always satisfying, with a variety of tacos, burritos, and extensive vegetarian options. In the mornings, head over for egg-stuffed breakfast burritos with chorizo, bacon, or potatoes. Inside are a few wooden tables framing the counter — a true no-frills experience that is nonetheless a road-trip-worthy stop." - Rebecca Roland

Google
I’ve been eating here for many years and they have stayed consistently great. One of my favorite all time vegetarian burrito and the pollo Colorado tacos are incredible. The staff is always nice and cooks get the food out quick and so delicious. Room for dining in and some outdoor options. Best little Mexican food place in SLO!

Google
This was my first time here & the tacos by far the best I’ve had in my life! If any employees can message me on what was the sauce they put on their carne asada tacos with everything (looked like a brown sauce) I would be greatly appreciated! & to the girl that said my labubus were cute 🥰 she was so nice & told me where the flea market was to go with my family. Over all such a great experience I pinned it to go again if I’m ever in that side of California again ❤️

Google
Great experience with the owner and his family serving us. The salsas are flavorful and just the right spicy kick!

Google
Best Mexican food in slo!! Their pollo verde is insanely good. Not only is the food good, but the restaurant is run by the nicest family.

Sam Good

Google
Burrito perfection and best Mexican food in SLO.

Google
I really enjoyed the crunch of the fried carnitas but the burrito was so dry and plain I likely won’t be going back again.

Good food, decent prices, and they were nice!

Yelp
This the burrito of my youth what do I mean by that I mean it's the first burrito I discovered the first burrito I came back to the burrito of being a punk ass kid, riding bikes around town no sense of respect no plans just scoring weed ir talking to girls yes. A burrito of the past. Different location same flavors somethings never change more expensive these days I remember when it was $5. When I didn't have much. Just a skateboard some loose change I had dreams. I knew I wanted to be something make something of my life. Now I'm here again paying $20 for the burrito of my youth. Has my greatness caught up with inflation. Same thing different audience different prices. What can one really do. We're just stardust sitting in plastic chairs in a restaurant off the side of the freeway what would Jesus do. We have big hearts full of carne asada I have nothing else to say. Burrito more expensive now. But it's fine I'm doing okay more than okay doing great just a couple of Guys eating burritos on a Tuesday night except we order different items we make choices in life and at tacos de. Do we really choose or do the choices chose us? Maybe fate has brought me here what it all means I do not know. I see evidence of beer but I see no beer in the fridge. It's a metaphor I see evidence of beer but no beer Did I just have to ask for the beer Is the beer for those who ask Do I deserve the beer What if I want wine I am too bourgeois for these plastic stools do you know who I am We are in same tacos de same place eternally and when I move to more gentrificatiwec neighborhoods with better jobs and ai and nvifia stocks part of me is always with the past now and forever I've been running Tesla gliding soaring lifting arms in the air cheering and one bite takes me back. Winterformal nite 2009. Keilan ordered the enchiladas because he wanted to be different keilan's enchiladas take forever cmon we're going to be late! You better hurry or your dates gonna leave without you great start for the night It all comes and goes These memories these things a salted chip is like a souvenir The night we became friends when you said NO everyone waits for keilan's enchiladas! The party bus don't leave till keilan eats! So we waited and I ate in silence no one said a word no one danced with me except the one girl who showed up alone no date. Don't know what happened to her. Heard she went to art school in Georgia. Anyways I made a friend that night he stuck up for me and my godforsaken enchiladas we all need a friend like that. So I eat my $20 burrito. And you know what maybe I will ask for a beer. Cheers to you because we all need a friend like that abd these days I'm that friend for me my own person. And maybe I need that. Maybe we all need that. Be there for you. The little guy is you and the hero is in you it's all encompassing it's all there . One love

Yelp
Pretty great flavors, and great portions. The chorizo was super well seasoned, and the onion inside was super fresh

Yelp
First time trying this place. It was recommended to me by my coworkers and it did not disappoint. I had the carne asada torta with fries and horchata. The woman at the cash register was kind and informative. The place was clean with artwork on the walls and the food came out fast and hot. The meat was juicy and not greasy. The horchata was some of the best horchata I've had since moving the area. I enjoyed my experience here and will be returning!!

Yelp
So bummed about my al pastor burrito that just got delivered by doordash. First off, it was $22. Which i will happily pay for delivery, however, it was horrible. ALL RICE! I took 4 or 5 bites of all rice. Like, what? And, the al pastor i did find was dry as a bone, the tortilla was also dry as a bone, they should never have served a customer this food. Period. No excuses.

Yelp
Actually Our Second Time Here But Last Time They Didn't Serve Beer So We Left. Now All Of A Sudden They Do Have Beer..!! What A Coincadink..!! I Ordered A Carnitas Burrito With Rice And Beans. My Fiancée Ordered The Vegetarian Burrito And Water I Got A Mandarina Jarrito.

Dillon D.

Yelp
We all know. It's gotten a bit pricy, but since Covid and inflation they gotta do what they gotta do. They are small family owned and run mom n pop shop. They make up the price with great service, speedy, delicious, and good sized portions. I look at as a way to keep supporting their business and fam.

Yelp
Great place been coming here for years great family business love the food best in the 5 cities

Yelp
FUXS GIVEN = 4.7 ******************* Food = 5 Sometimes I crave the campechana burrito. I go no beans and it's one of the best burritos I've ever had. UX = 4 Love this place. Music always playing and people singing. Order at the counter. Service = 5 Staff is always happy and friendly.

Yelp
Update, it's pretty good and friendly. If you do want to find good value here, go with the vegetarian stuff. I know, meat can be called for sometimes, but the veggie mula or the corn quesadilla, they will do just fine!
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
It's not cheap but it is really good! Finally a good veggie burrito in SLO - And they have takeout. Win win

Michelle R.

Yelp
Excellent to-go order for Christmas Eve taco Tuesday, we'll be back for sure ! That corn mula with pastor was fire !
google avatar

Sherri H.

Yelp
Wow! The food is outstanding!! Authentic as it comes! Such great flavors! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Driving through town on a road trip. Ordered Campechana Burrito (beef, chicken, pork combo burrito). It was delish and perfect for my road trip.
google avatar

Chloe S.

Yelp
Came here to fill that taco craving. Ordered one veggie tacos which came with refried beans, lettuce, gauc, shredded cheese, tomatoes and onions. Also tried the battered shrimp, which came with onions and cilantro. Both tacos were pretty tasty, but I would say the price point is a bit steep for tacos. Both tacos ran about $9 to $10, which didn't quite fill me up but was a nice snack.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Super overpriced food that is very mids. Would not recommend, much better Mexican food in SLO. Would not pay $20 for this again.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Decent vegetarian soft tacos. No complaints. Nice sunset view of Bishop Peak from the patio. 4 different food joints in this small strip mall, so if you come with friends there should be something for everyone.

Yelp
I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. My usual go to Mexican restaurant is Tacos de Mexico, but I might just start coming here too. Chicken Tacos - I loved the taste of these. They were juicy and had a nice flavor I've never gotten from tacos I've had before, but that might be because this is the first time I've had tacos that weren't beef or pork lol. I'll be trying Tacos de Mexico's chicken tacos to compare. Carne Asada Burrito Bowl - LOVED this even though it was tinier than most burrito bowls. The meat was very soft and flavorful, I'm drooling just thinking back right now. It also had a good amount of cheese which I love. Overall, it was a very positive experience and the service was great (although my bf and I were the only ones there aside from another lady). I'll definitely be coming back.

Wes H.

Yelp
Amazing burrito! I had the homemade chorizo and egg and it was the real deal. Highly recommended! Service was quick and food is all made from scratch.
google avatar

Sydney R.

Yelp
one of my favorite burritos in slo! go for the carnitas for sure. service is always good though i do think it's one of the more expensive places though
google avatar

Kim N.

Yelp
Family owned. They are always kind and have smiles on their faces when we walk through the door. Their food is great and as a vegan family and me with celiac they have quite a few options:) they have helped us build burritos, tacos and nachos. Even made us potato tacos from scratch one day:)
google avatar

Drew S.

Yelp
A burrito and soda cost me $23 (added sour cream). Burrito was good. It wasn't awesome, but a decent burrito. I'll go someplace else (because of the price) unless I'm right next to it. Service was fine.
google avatar

April A.

Yelp
I love the beans rice and cheese burrito. Beans have good flavor. Always friendly service too.

Jamal dimorcis the 3 T.

Yelp
When I walk in I got a free drink and a free plate of food and thay got me a price low. I Riley recommend this Mexican restaurant naw have a good day
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
I realllly enjoyed my food here. Beef tacos have nice big chunks of savory meat, ample cilantro and onions, guacamole and a slightly spicy salsa that hits the spot. They're big too.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
During a time when everyone is getting food to go, speed goes a long way. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get my food when I arrive. And when I call it in they always say it'll be ready within 10 minutes. Burritos are tasty and the family is friendly. I do wish they would be a bit more generous with their salsa but a minor thing with all they have going for it during COVID.
google avatar

Alison B.

Yelp
I love this amazing local Mexican food in SLO. It is simply great food! And, the people are always friendly and just the best too! If it's possible, they make it even better!

Corina L.

Yelp
I ordered the al pastor burrito and it's delicious but the guacamole and salsa I asked for were not in my burrito. Just beans rice and cilantro with a little bit of pastor. They did give me the side of fried Serrano Peppers that I asked for but $19 with a tip on a to go order is pretty expensive! I could easily make this burrito at home as I am Hispanic and growing up one of my chores was to make beans. Maybe I'll open my own restaurant with lower prices and the best salsa you could ever taste. For years I've been told to start a salsa company. Maybe 2023 will be the salsa year! Tl;dr Tasted great but missing ingredients and very expensive for just beans and rice.
google avatar

Hungry G.

Yelp
Vegetarian special burrito with no dairy is what I got and it was still pretty darn good, great pico.

Shallyar M.

Yelp
Order tacos and I got a burrito. I went back to tell them. The guy answered the phone as I was telling him the issue with my order. Then he say the order on his end showed as a burrito and the photo on DoorDash was wrong. I told him to take the burrito back and make my tacos. He said NO. As I would have to buy the tacos in a separate order! Like why ? I didn't want a burrito I wanted tacos... NEVER going back to this place again !!!!!
google avatar

Mr.f F.

Yelp
Food wasn't what it was cracked up to be. Two plates for over $30. Enchilada plate looks like a soupy substance with no edible appeal. I may have chewed on four pieces of shrimp in burrito weighing about 1 pound. I won't be eating here ever again. There is potential to get better. My recommendation is to have the young guy clean off tables and sweep instead of playing on his phone and a live bunny rabbit. Not a good look for a restaurant with potential.

Drew V.

Yelp
Low quality burrito with mostly rice for $13. Poor salsa selection. Surprised this place was highly rated for SLO.
google avatar

Yaniz P.

Yelp
Chose this place because I wanted authentic Mexican flavors. Got the grilled chicken tacos and I was very satisfied. Will definitely be coming back again.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Stopped in while traveling south because it looked good. The taquitos were a bit pricey but plentiful. The bean and cheese burrito was okay. The taquitos were delicious and were a bit like flautas. Very good and VERY spicy sauce.
google avatar

Paden M.

Yelp
This is the best and most authentic Mexican place in SLO. Taqueria Santa Cruz could NEVER! -food is AMAZING and perfectly proportioned. Never too much or little of anything and never dry or cold. -fastest service of pretty much any place in SLO. I'm always in and out in 5 minutes. -everyone who works here is so friendly and kind -tons of options, amazing for vegetarians
google avatar

Ted W.

Yelp
We love Tacos De. Local favorite. Great burritos and tacos. Always busy, so plan ahead.
google avatar

Aaron B.

Yelp
This family-run business is great and what I personally consider the best taqueria in SLO. Try their fajitas tacos for my personal favorite. Best Mexican food item in town and not on many menus I've tried. The dining room is relatively small but this restaurant remains one of my favorite places to grab a bite to eat after a busy day at work.

Yelp
Rarely am I ever in the mood for nachos since I'm more of a taco girl, but I came here because the nachos came highly recommended. My friend and I dropped by due in part to a munchies attack and this spot is just right around the corner of where she lives so it was super convenient. We called in our order ahead of time and when we got there it was ready to go. We ordered the Combo Nachos. The difference is we asked for it to have all the meats. That's asada, chicken and pork. We don't mess around. We also got a large horchata. No lie, it was THE best horchata I've ever had in my life. Them some serious words coming from someone who has had it everywhere in America, Mexico, Guatemala and even Honduras. I'm not sure if it made a difference that I asked for them to only put a little bit of ice in the cup. (Side note: adding a smidge of rum is ) The nachos was bomb. We killed the whole thing. There was just the right amount of everything. The chips to toppings ratio was on point. This just might be my new SLO spot instead of going downtown.

Yelp
Was in the area and ran into this restaurant on the corner on my Way back home! I'm so Glad I pulled over and tried it out. Ordered a Bacon and Homemade chorizo bReakfast burrito. It was delicious fast service welcoming service and CLEAN. Thank you will definitely be coming back to try something else!
google avatar

Leanna W.

Yelp
Comfort Mexican food at its finest. Generous portions, great pricing, no nonsense service, authentic flavor, sodas + beer. What more could you ask for? My fish tacos were huge, the enchiladas were fresh and savory, and all without making much of a dent on our budget. This was just a pit stop on our way up north, so mind you it has more of a hole-in-the-wall feel rather than a lux sit-down restaurant. It's a standard mom-and-pop restaurant and isn't charging for flouncy service and extra amenities - but regardless, the food is super solid and would definitely recommend and return next time we are up the 101.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
I know I haven't checked out very many Taquerias since moving to SLO (okay, this is the only one...), but DAMN those chicken enchiladas are my jam! Combo plate w/ two is only $7.75. We've been a few times, and I've had the chicken tacos and chile relleno (both good), and the large horchata comes in basically a styrofoam basin. It is delicious and enough to share! The "guacamole" is more of an avocado sauce, and is actually pretty standard in taquerias. Don't hate, unless you want to pay a huge premium to have hand-mashed Haas avocados. I love the rice and beans that come with the combos...there are a ton of different flavors going on, and they are all delicious. Literally the nicest service I've received at a hole-in-the-wall, from every single member of the team. There's just a fantastic vibe going on in this place. Love them!

Yelp
After seeing all the hype from Yelp, I finally decided to check this place out. I came here a few days ago in hope of a quality quesadilla before hitting the road. What I got was damn near roadkill. For $6, I got a greasy, sad excuse for a quesadilla. I had to open it up and take out some of the cheese and dab it with napkins because there was so much grease oozing down my neck. I couldn't even finish it. Mind you, I'm a man that loves his fatty foods, but this is ridiculous. I will not be coming back anytime soon. Take your money elsewhere.

Adam T.

Yelp
I went in tonight they asked the specifics of my order. When my number was called I asked the person who prepared it if he left the cheese off my sons taco's he replied yes sir. To my surprise after driving home he in fact did make my order wrong. When I came back they did not offer to remake it. They offered to refuse me service. I got very heated. No apology no offer to remake just get out. We have the right to refuse service. I asked for my money back. I apologize for my hunger rage. I will not be back!

Kristy C.

Yelp
Very disappointing. $66 for 4 asada burritos filled only with rice...what a rip off! and then ask for a tip before you get your food.

Anise G.

Yelp
This place has the friendliest family owned operations. And on top of that, the tastiest yummiest veggie burrito I've ever had in my life. Stewed zucchini potatoes carrots cilantro onion yummy rice and beans it's to die for!!! I come here once a week just for this
google avatar

Carolyn F.

Yelp
$14 for a pork fajita burrito, every piece of meat was gristly and inedible. My brother and SIL warned me that this, their fave Mexican in SLO, had changed and was now disappointing, "not as good as they remember." I tried it anyway... they were right. :-(
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Terrible service and atrocious food. Terrible quality and value. Three people. We ordered $49 of food tipped $8 and left starving. Fish was freezer burnt and 50 % breading. Do not eat here. So cal has hundreds of great places. Wanted to try because it is privately owned. Stay away! Paid $4 for dis eod beans. Less than. 1/4 cup of rice thought it was a joke.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
This is the worst Mexican food place I have been to in SLO. First off the menu did not have accurate prices for food. When I got rung up and paid I thought, that doesn't seem right. After I received the receipt, I asked them why I got charged over $1.50 more than what the menu items stated. They said oh that's the price, we haven't updated it yet. But funny enough, other menu items were updated with a tape over piece of paper stating the new price. It's not like I'm hurting for a $1.50 but you should honor the price stated on the menu. They didn't offer any refund or compensation. The food was very bland. I got two carne asada burritos which were bland and an order of flautas which were probably the worst I've ever had. They weren't crispy, flavorful, and mess presentation. I LOVE fried food and always want to eat it all. I did not finish these flautas and threw them away. All in all just a bad experience here. I'm 31 years old and lived in CA for over 8 years of my life. I've had AMAZING Mexican food and let's just say I will NEVER eat at this establishment again.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
This is by a very long shot the BEST Mexican food in SLO They have great food and service in a casual setting. They are on California by the freeway, moved there from Laurel Ln where they had a great following. If you want the best, you HAVE to go there! Period.
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
Great burritos and the horchata IS A MUST! Everyone is so kind. My favorite place in SLO!
