The Best Takeout Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week in San Francisco, Oakland, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"I queued for tacos at Tacos El Autlense and ate them hot in the car: al pastor crisped at the edges, bright red salsa, tender lengua and soupy birria — the kind of tacos that demand immediate consumption and deliver on flavor." - Eater Staff

Best East Bay Tacos That Are Available for Takeout or Delivery | Eater SF

"Even during non-pandemic times, this taco truck — a fixture outside the Hotsy Totsy Club cocktail bar — was a takeout-only operation that discouraged loitering, so not much has changed other than the truck’s hours, which have been scaled back to 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. All the tacos are solid, but in particular the al pastor is wonderfully flavorful with nice crisp edges, and the salsas are bright and punchy." - Luke Tsai

Google
Easily the best Mexican food in alameda! A true hidden gem in an unassuming location. The carnitas and carne burrito are the best! Super flavorful and high quality meat, not at all like the chewy stuff you’d get at other places. Staff are all super friendly and nice even when it’s very busy. The only thing is there’s no seating unless you plan on also grabbing a drink at the bar. Usually I take it to go so that’s not a concern for me. I will admit it’s gotten pricier lately, but it’s still totally worth it!

Google
I am the big fan of Mexican food and it’s my first time trying taco truck. The chicken taco was good and affordable. They also have burritos, tortas and veggie taco. The food truck is near the Asian grocery stores 99ranch so you can pick up a Taco on the way out!

Phuong L.

Google
Got taco al pastor, asada, and tripas. The tripas were great, the rest were pretty forgettable although I'd imagine they would be amazing after a night out.

Justin B.

Google
Review update- I’ve been here a few times now and there is an issue with consistency. They’ve also messed the order up twice (out of like 5 times) with that said it is still a top 5 taco truck in the East Bay. Excellent Carnitas Tacos and the Asada Burrito is rich and flavorful.

Bob J.

Google
I ordered three tacos. The Birria was very tender and juicy, the Aastor was good, and the Lengua was my favorite because of the sweetness of the meat combined with the sourness of the sauce. The ceviche is great on tortilla chips.

Raquel F.

Google
The best mex in berkeley area. The food is really amazing and people super nice and polite. Carnitas is my fav meat here

Alexander W.

Google
The best tacos and burritos ever. I've been going to this place for 8 years and the quality has never gone down. The workers are very friendly and nice, they're quick to get your order and give it. Have recommended it to multiple friends who feel the same way. HIGHLY suggest giving them a try and tipping as they really do deserve it and appreciate it.

Rishab M.

Google
Quite literally the best tacos in the entire Bay Area. staff is very nice and knowledgeable. Just wish they weren’t too stingy on the salsas. They charge extra. Otherwise, top tier food!
google avatar

Yelp
Got their birria, carne, and el pastor tacos. el pastor was my favorite out of the three. She dresses the tacos for you, and you're allowed to get one sauce on the side- love their salsa verde. They now allow credit card transactions!! Yay!
google avatar

Edison H.

Yelp
Does Autlense means authentic? I'd believe it if that's what you'd tell me because tacos here were simply all great! I tried their cabeza, lengua (extra), tripe (also extra), and birria tacos. I loved them all! No issue finding street parking. They take cards and venmo/zelle. If you do pay with card it's a 3.5% surcharge as disclosed. I've been recommended to just grab a drink at Hotsy Totsy so I can eat inside.. that seems to be the move unless you live close by.

Yelp
Overall it served its purpose. I ordered a asada burrito and it was pretty good! I also ordered a horchata and that was not my cup of tea but food overall was good. Meat was tender and flavorful which I enjoyed. Customer service was fine. Nothing worth noting aside from being nice. Overall will return again when in the area
google avatar

Yelp
Five stars all the way! Great services, and the tacos were bomb! Had the lengua, pastor, birria and carne asada. Lengua was my favorite!
google avatar

Winston L.

Yelp
A throwback to high school off campus lunches! Burritos and tacos still hit like they used to. Unfortunate that it's more than 2x as expensive as before though. Sign of the times
google avatar

Lucy N.

Yelp
It's kinda expensive for a burrito that only has beans, cheese, rice, and meat. For $20 it should have some sour cream & come with chips. Yes it tasted good but it was greasy. So I'm giving the burrito 2.5 stars Now the street tacos are $3 each which seems like a fair price - I should have gotten tacos.
google avatar

Alexander V.

Yelp
One of the best taco trucks in the bay! Always love to come here and get burritos and tacos. The quality is always consistent and the service is fantastic! Everyone is so nice and it's just such an easy experience when coming here. Def recommend the carne asada burrito!
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite food for tacos and tortas. Quick friendly service always! I usually order pastor and too many others to list.
google avatar

Hope M.

Yelp
I randomly found this taco truck on google and wow I'm so glad i stumbled across this! Honestly hands down of the best Mexican trucks I've had in a long time! I ordered a burrito with carne asada and it was amazing! It wasn't your typical carne asada. It tastes like they had cooked the asada in a slow cooker all day! It fell apart in your mouth and was just so soft. My boyfriend ordered carne asada and pastor tacos. The pastor was fine but the highlight is really the asada. I'll definitely be back soon! They accept card too!
google avatar

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Right when my friends opened the foil cover we immediately knew the tacos would be delicious. We enjoyed each tacos with the mix of toppings, meats, and sauces that came on top. Highly recommend this place!! The employees were sweet and friendly too! Had a nice vibe being behind a bar spot. Eat and drink!
google avatar

Leah E.

Yelp
Friday night plans included drinks at Hotsy Totsy before a near by concert and the universe aligned to give us the best taco truck ever to pregame with our mezcal margaritas. We ordered two carnitas, Al pastor, and chicken for six tacos total. Tacos are $3. We were surprised to find that we got carne asada instead of carnitas. The tacos are so good they come with two different kinds of salsa but we didn't even need them. I can't wait to return...
google avatar

Simba G.

Yelp
Have been coming here for over 15 years. Highly recommended. Tacos are great! Burritos are fine
google avatar

Alexander T.

Yelp
Number one tacos truck in East Bay. Order a bunch. Eat them standing up. Don't sleep on the ceviche.
google avatar

Rosalyn M.

Yelp
Always a solid option for tacos in El cerrito. They are now accepting card, Venmo or Zelle or cash. The photos are from Oct 24, so I don't know what the prices are now
google avatar

Hedda P.

Yelp
Best tacos in California, hands down! Quick service, pretty easy to find parking, and the food is so, so good. I always get el pastor tacos, but their lengua is really good as well, as are their quesadillas and burritos. However, the absolute best thing you can get here is the ceviche!
google avatar

Jessica Z.

Yelp
I absolutely love their tacos. It's now $3 per taco and I still think it's worth it. This time I got an al pastor, lengua, and cabeza. My favorite was the lengua taco. The meat was so tender. I would definitely get this one again. Al pastor was good but the meat was a little on the dry side for me. Cabeza was also enjoyable but had slightly more fatty chunks than I would have like. Regardless, I still enjoyed their tacos and will definitely be back to try everything else on their menu. Ask for some jalapeños on the side for some extra crunch. It's cash only Lengua: 5/5 Al pastor: 4.5/5 Cabeza: 4/5
google avatar

Yelp
I've passed by this truck many times during the day and have never tried it. I usually crave tacos at night and the hours state they're open until 12am. I tried calling to confirm the hours, but never get an answer. So tonight we decided to take a chance and drive out there. It's located outside the bar, Hotsy Totsy, and was indeed open! The truck is cash only. Parking is street parking. When you walk up to the truck, you can smell how good this place was! We had high hopes, as it has almost 5 stars based on 500+ reviews. We brought the tacos home and omg, the tacos we ordered were so moist and tender! It was very flavorful and fresh! My bf, sister, and I all agreed that the tacos were top tier, up there with another food truck that we favored. So happy to have found a taco truck that opens until midnight, close to home, and has some bomb ass tacos!
google avatar

Yelp
Best taco truck in the Bay Area! I eat here regularly. They are so nice and the food is

Phil D.

Yelp
This place is great. It sounds weird but their cilantro is amazing! I always ask for extra. Thank you, Extra Salsa Gringo
google avatar

brn d.

Yelp
$15.50 cash for a veggie burrito! And it doesn't come with chips : ( I'm sorry but that is way too much $
google avatar

Iliana S.

Yelp
Solid lengua and carne asada tacos. I think their hot sauce could benefit from an extra Chile but other than that you can tell the food is great quality! Burrito was delicious, I just wished the carnitas was a bit for fatty and melted in my mouth.
google avatar

Karina L.

Yelp
Delicious! My favorite taco spot ever and I am very picky with tacos. My favorite are asada, birria, and tripas extra crispy! I make sure to tell everyone about this hidden gem.. there's a reason who they're so busy! :) Have they upped their prices? Sure but who hasn't at this point in this economy of ours... do people expect every establishment to still have pre Covid prices? Cmon now this is our reality

Sarn S.

Yelp
Best burritos and tacos I've had in the Bay Area, hands down. If I'm not in so-cal, this is my go to spot now when I'm in the area. Packed with flavor and the food is juicy. Haven't had a dry burrito or taco yet. It's a bit oily, but I honestly like and prefer that. Most other places either lack flavor, oil, or their meat is too dry. This place does it right.
google avatar

Samuel A.

Yelp
These tacos were very delicious. It too a little longer because they were short staffed, but it was worthwhile the wait!
google avatar

T S.

Yelp
Still like this place but wanted to update my last review. Since last time I've received several tasty burritos and tortas but enough of them have had hard pieces of meat to be noteworthy. Like hurt your teeth pieces of overcooked carnitas. Maybe I just got the end of the stick so to speak, and hoping this isn't the case for others. This, coupled with the price hikes have made a difference in going there. On a nice note, they do take credit cards now!
google avatar

Luis S.

Yelp
This taco truck had some of the best tacos I've had in the bay. The meat was super juicy and well seasoned. The place was right behind a bar so you can grab drinks as well if you're feeling that. Service was also really fast, would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is 9 minutes away by foot from my workplace and I was so excited to try it! My coworkers mentioned this place to me so I got curious and gave it a try. I ordered an asada and pastor taco. PERSONALLY, I thought it was okay. It didn't really impress me since I've had better ones in SoCal and SD. The limes could be more juicier tho. However, it is close to my workplace and these tacos are $2.50 each so I'll give them props for that. What I like about the area where they're located is that there is free street parking for 90 mins, no tax, and is affordable! Downside is, it's cash only, no receipts are available, and there's no place to dine in. It's honestly a grab and go or eat inside the bar that's next door to it.

Yaser G.

Yelp
Customer service is very poor at this location espically when you call. They keep ending the call,Lol Don't recommened calling

L Z.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've had in Berkeley! Got steak torta the first time and so good! Returned and got burrito, also very good
google avatar

Soren R.

Yelp
We live down the street and we eat here entirely too much. We can't stop getting those late night $3 tacos. They're so tasty. The quality is very consistent (I'd know... I've eaten there weekly for years). Our favorite is the carnitas. Good horchata too.
google avatar

Ryan D.

Yelp
This place is good. The last time I went it was for the tacos in 2013. I'm back in the area and I had a really sad experience at Chipotle the past week so I tried the carne asada burrito. I'm glad I returned; this place was quick to serve up on a lunch break and the burrito held up while I was enjoying it. It was fresh-tasting, well-proportioned, and, at a great price!

Lionel H.

Yelp
Infuriatingly slow process and super inconsistent, often close early with no explanation. You can post up at the 'order here' window for like 20 mins before they acknowledge you with 3 people in the truck. I don't understand why their process is such a dumpster fire. They are so popular.

Mathew M.

Yelp
Ordered an Asada burrito and got a bean and rice burrito with minimal steak in it. This place has gone downhill since they started not doing cash only. I don't mind the raise in prices but the quality and portions of their food has gone way down. It's just not this time only. It happened in the last time I went there also.

Yelp
The Hotsy Totsy is a cherished local bar, known for its quirky, fun, and hip vibe, complemented by an excellent cocktail menu, shuffleboard, a free jukebox, and warm, welcoming service. Established in 1939, the ambiance at Albany's oldest running bar has always been incredible, but when Tacos Autlense set up shop as a permanent fixture just outside the bar, we became regulars. Since then every one of our out-of-town guests has been treated to this iconic bar/taco combo. No matter if enjoying the summer heat, or the winter chill, a cocktail at the Hotsy Totsy and a bite from Taco Autlense is always a treat. Among our favorites is the refreshing and light ceviche, and their diverse range of tacos never disappoints. Personally, I've sampled carne asada tacos at numerous places, but I keep returning to Taco Autlense for their flavor, quality, and proximity to my favorite bar!

Audreana L.

Yelp
This place is the most skippiest burrito truck I have ever came across. I want to share my experience with anyone in this area looking for a good burrito spot. Im a big foodie but I'm also big on customer service. I know it's just a burrito truck but someone paying top dollar almost $100 later on burritos & refusing to give me the proper amount of jalapeños on the side is just insane. If you have any kids that like to get quesadillas don't go there they have the smallest quesadillas ever and still charge the full $10 for half the size of a normal quesadilla just saying. I've tried to give them a few chances before deciding that I'll never return. Terrible customer service and they will rip you off. I was also overcharged by six dollars and they couldn't explain why and did not give me a receipt. This place sucks & whatever you do don't go here, there are far better burrito places in the area.
google avatar

Howard B.

Yelp
Tacos El Autlense absolutely makes the best tacos in the region. Conveniently located next to (and sharing a parking lot with) the Hotsy Totsy Club, this is a taco stop that should not be missed. I would go so far as to say that no drive down San Pablo Av is really complete without stopping here.
google avatar

Emmeline W.

Yelp
My partner and I used to always call this the "Jehovah's Witness taco truck" because they used to have some sort of bible verse decal but I think it's since been removed lol. Tacos El Autlense is a local staple!!! Folks here are SO nice and the food is always fresh and delicious. Great for late-night meals, though they might not always stick with their listed hours. Cash only. For COVID safety purposes, staff and patrons must wear masks, and all staff wear gloves. Located right behind Hotsy Totsy. Some parking available in the adjacent residential side streets. After 8 PM, there's constantly a 15-40 minute line, which really speaks to how great their food is. Or maybe there's just a lot of late-night foodies in Albany. I've really only had veggie/chicken dishes here, but from what I've heard from friends, their pork options are to die for + super authentic. Their seasoning is always dynamic-- acidic + savory + spicy ratios are fire. Extra salsa available upon request-- I recommend their green sauce for sure :-)
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
prices went up again.... but still, after i was done eating, it's still a great tasting burrito and i guess worth the price. the employees are still nice and... oh, they take credit cards now. i'm not sure if they add a service fee as i paid cash.

Kyle C.

Yelp
Good prices with authentic flavor ( I recommend the carnitas burrito) , and fast service! Quality over quantity , it isn't the biggest burrito but will still fill you up plenty. I think it's definitely one of the tastiest around the area and it tastes like it's made with love so IYKYK. Got good horchata and Jamaica aswell. Best burrito in Albany / Berkeley/ El Cerrito! Also accepts debit/credit card now as of 8/11/24! Right next to Hotsy Totsy bar/club with very limited parking Just be aware but absolutely worth it!
google avatar

Marc W.

Yelp
so found this taco truck on yelp and had some tacos. I had Carne Asada. My son had Pastor and we both loved them. They're fast friendly, great pricing and so tasty had to come back and get round two. Definitely recommend you to come and try out some of these tacos. You'll be glad you did because they taste super delicious.
google avatar

Anny L.

Yelp
Favorite taco truck in Albany! Affordable, authentic and delicious! Remember to bring cash!
google avatar

Ebenezer Coode C.

Yelp
About a year ago their burritos cost $10, including tax, with salsa and jalapeños included.. Now they cost $15.50 with no salsa nor jalapeños. Used to be a good place but there high prices and removal of sides makes it a place that USED TO BE GOOD.
google avatar

Kyra K.

Yelp
Tacos El Autlense is hands down my favorite place to get carnitas tacos. The tacos are reasonably priced and the quality and taste is always consistent. My family and I ordered carnitas tacos for dinner. The smell of the tacos is one thing, but to take a bite and devour them? That's a whole other level. The tacos are always warm, the tortillas fresh, the carnitas is tender and juicy, and the salsa has enough heat but isn't overbearing. The tacos here hit the spot no matter the time of day. Service is usually quick and easy. Wait times may vary depending on how busy they are. Usually we wait anywhere between 5-15 minutes for our order. They're cash only and parking is either in the Hotsy Totsy lot or on the street. I've been a loyal customer since high school and constantly crave these tacos. I'll keep coming back every time I visit home as their tacos are a must!
google avatar

Tony W.

Yelp
Good things come to those who wait! Service is nice here, but the wait is the wait. Glad to know that my order is made to order, nothing in huge batches. Waited 15 minutes for 3 tacos because there were so many other people waiting as well. Delicious cabeza tacos (beef head) must get this if you decide to have tacos here
google avatar

Monty G.

Yelp
Just moved to the neighborhood. Looked forward to a good burrito. But they are overrated, slow, pretty rude, and they charge extra for salsa.
google avatar

Angel A.

Yelp
Hands down, this taco truck serves the absolute best Lengua and Carne Asada tacos I've ever had! The quality of the meat is outstanding, making each bite a flavor explosion. The Lengua is tender and succulent, cooked to perfection, while the Carne Asada is seasoned just right, giving it a delightful smoky taste. I always had DRY taco meat at other food spots. The tacos are generously filled, and the toppings complement the meats beautifully. If you're a meat lover, these tacos are an absolute must-try! I keep coming back for more because I can't get enough of that amazing quality and taste. You won't be disappointed! **NOTE this is a CASH only establishment

D B.

Yelp
I've literally been going to this truck for years. The food has always been on point and delicious. About a year ago, I got a carne asada burrito and ended up with mild food poisoning. Not the worst but a terrible night in the bathroom. Recently I decided it had been long enough and I should give them another chance because I've always loved the food and the convenience of the location, plus I like to support small businesses. The other night I went and ordered a carne asada burrito with only beans, cheese and rice. I ate it and it tasted fine. A couple hours later I had the worst food poisoning I've ever experienced. Everything in my stomach liquified and was coming out of both ends (I know TMI). I figured I'd give it a couple hours and maybe I'd be fine. But it continued to get worse. I kept drinking water to try and hydrate and it just kept coming back up. Eventually at 2am when I started to have numbness and tingling in my hands, light headedness and developed chills and was cold (even though the weather has been hot this whole week 85-95 degrees) I woke up my partner and we went to the ER. I spent 4 hours there while they put an IV in my arm for major dehydration, nausea and other medication. I know it was the burrito because I hadn't really had any food that day. I'm super bummed because I do like the place but that's twice now. So just be wary that there maybe sanitation issues. Sadly I won't be going there anymore.
google avatar

Marcio R.

Yelp
$11 for a regular burrito!!! The audacity! We ordered 4 super burritos with everything, they gave us very small regular burritos. No sour cream, and when I asked for sauce they said it was 1 sauce per burrito?!!??!!? You have got to be kidding me. On top of that the taste of the meat is weak, and the beans are hard. NEVER EVER WILL I GO BACK HERE.
google avatar

Phung T.

Yelp
Gave us the wrong order. Check your food before leaving. We got someone else's horrible taste in tacos for dinner.
