18 Taco Destinations in the East Bay

"This longtime, East Bay mini-chain favorite dishes up some of the juiciest, flavor-packed adobada and crispy (but never dry) carne asada. This truck’s “specialty meats” are also expertly prepared, including their suadero, tripas, and lengua." - Lena Park, Dianne de Guzman

Google
💰🌮🌯 💲💲💲 💸 You can charge whatever you want when you are on top. Highly popular, and open very late night in East Oakland, which is admirable. The food is good, the service is relatively fast and they take a card 💳 which is huge as Oakland is ghetto you shouldn't have liquid assets. Although I love a staple, I won't find myself here for safety reasons, and price inflation paying $30 for a street meal. *try tripas or suadero here

Google
Those were one the best spicy pork tacos I have even had. Despite their neighborhood, this place made one of the very best authentic Mexican food. They were very generous with their meat. The meat was supper juicy and flavorful. The fresh radish, grilled small onion and Jalapeno were my favorite sides for tacos. Their taco sauce were also supper yummy, not too spicy. The chocolate flan were good too. I wish I found this place sooner.

Google
This right here. Is my favorite spot.....the burritos always smacking. The verde sauce is lit.....hella meat in my burrito, very tender meat and fresh ingredients. This is a oakland staple. Been here for hella years. The area is a little rough...so don't leave nothing in your whip.

Google
One of the best Burritos in the east!! Open late night which is prefect but they are cash only. Everything here is good meat is flavorful, rice is fresh and good, salsa taste great and they toast the burrito shells I love that. I highly recommend this truck for good authentic Mexican food.

Google
Very good food. Prices are a little too high, especially considering it’s a food truck. Still worth a visit though.

Google
Tacos El Gordo in Oakland is a legit hotspot! Yeah, the area's a bit iffy, so park smart. The wait? Sometimes long, but totally worth it for those late-night cravings. Horchata's on point, and all the ingredients? Fresh as can be. Hits the spot every time. Solid 4 stars, no doubt. Keep it up!

Google
Best tacos with quality meat at great prices - well worth the wait! Too bad they don't open for lunch... 8/14/17 Still my favorite taco truck. I drive 30 minutes each way to get my fix here.

The food is great. I’m addicted to the tacos, but the price has increased four dollars a taco Ridiculous.

Yelp
Officially my FAVORITE GO-TO taco spot in all of East Bay! I got the asada burrito Door Dashed it for a late dinner and it did not disappoint! Will be ordering again really soon!

Yelp
It's unfortunate because our first time here was great! No issues with food quality or service (delivery). Recently, our second time here the meat (especially the suadero) tastes like plastic...it was offensive. Tortillas were really greasy. Green salsa was missing from the order. My partner got suadero burrito with extra carne, which also didn't taste right (observing from our first visit, it's not the same). I had 3 suadero and 1 asada tacos and I ate 1 suadero and noticed it was off so I stopped eating it. Maybe we just caught them on an off day but I won't be coming back for awhile until I'm in a better place to potentially waste food without being upset about it. Tacos el plastico or tacos el basura, you decide! If you think I'm upset: wouldn't you, after spending $50+ for meal and tip (we even ordered for pick up this time)??

Yelp
I almost cried while eating these tacos. I might have also been drunk, but that's not the point. We ordered four super tacos - al pastor and asada. We waited quite a bit for our food, but it was pretty busy at 2am with a steady flow of people. But honestly I would have waited even longer because they were worth it.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night to grab some tacos and was greeted by some not so friendly customers demanding for green sauce. Due to this incident, I felt extremely uncomfortable and the staff had customers orders sitting on the side to accommodate this guest. I ordered the steak, chicken and carnitas tacos. The steak was my favorite. The chicken was shredded and not too salty. Carnitas had a huge hunk of fat that was not too appetizing. Due to the environment and where the truck is, I would not come back. The tacos are mediocre and not worth my safety.

Yelp
Taco Trailer aka "Tacos El Gordo" located in Oakland off International & 42nd Ave Craving late night tacos/burritos is just something that happens when I'm in the town so we decided to pull up super late night after coming from Frisco. As we were pulling up from the street, we noticed a lot of cars stalled in front of us. I thought to myself hmmm... I wonder if this is a sideshow up ahead & sure enough it was! For my non Bay Area Natives let me explain to you the definition of a sideshow. Sideshows=street spectacles that involve participants suddenly shutting down four-way intersections and even major bridges, and using the expanses of asphalt (street/concrete) to put on displays of cars, often with blacked-out windows, (people also may hang out the window) doing extreme donuts. Other things may go on as well (if you know you know) Anyway let me get back to the review! We had to turn around cause sideshows don't stop until they stop! We end up pulling into a gas station on the same block. I ordered carne asada burrito and a pastor taco. That was the best burrito I had in awhile that had just what I needed on the inside. Carne asada, cheese, sour cream, & Mexican rice nice wrapped in a flour tortilla. The pastor had cilantro, onion, purple onion, green jalapeño on a corn tortilla. A green a red sauce came with my order that tasted delectable, just the right amount of heat that it's still super flavorful & enjoyable to eat. My burrito and taco had the perfect consistency of every single ingredient. I have no complaints! The service was excellent. The lady taking orders was very nice, attentive and fast ! Pull up to this taco truck it's worth the risk imo! Food - 5 Atmosphere - 3 (Based off of the fact a sideshow was going on). Service - 4

Yelp
Really? Why does this taco truck have 5-star reviews? "Tacos El Gordo" is on the corner of International Blvd x 42nd Ave in East Oakland. It's a food truck sitting in a parking lot, and it faces the street. If I was driving, we would of kept going. But my friend said the food is good here, so I should write a review about this place. Okay, you need to move the food truck away from the homeless camp. There's a row of trailers and tents about 20-feet away. Then there's sketchy people wandering around. So there's your "ambiance." I ordered: -Shrimp Super Taco, -Carne Asada & Pollo Combo Burrito -Churro Cheesecake - Shrimp Super Taco, Grade (5/5): if I only ordered Shrimp Tacos, the place would get 5-stars. That taco was loaded with plump juicy shrimp. Fresh and Tasty! Lots of extras included. - Combo Burrito w/ Carne Asada & Chicken, Grade (3/5): Big regular sized burrito. Mostly rice, not much meat. Some hard to chew chunks of either tough meat or tendons. No beans either, just alot of rice. Tortilla is grilled and served hot. That's why it's cheap, not much meat. -Churro Cheesecake, Grade (0/5): This is not a cheesecake. It's a square piece of custard pie with cinnamon powder on top. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, the tacos are good here. If you come here, be aware of your surroundings.

Yelp
7:30pm on a Saturday night. I've driven past this place a few times and the line was crazy. I'm guessing we beat the crowd because it was a fairly quiet night. Got my standard order of asada and carnitas tacos and a horchata. 4 tacos and 1 medium horchata was $21. My friend and I have been visiting several taco joints lately, and this was the most expensive of them. Food came out within I'd say less than 5 minutes. Asada was good. Nothing extraordinary, but a decent standard asada taco. The carnitas on the other hand. A+. If I ever come back to this truck, I'm only getting carnitas because damn it was good. Crispy, juicy, flavorful. So good. I would have liked to give this place 4.5 stars. But you can't. And I'm not giving 5 stars out here Willy nilly.

Yelp
In our search for great Oakland tacos, we decided to start here! What I mean is that, there are so many taco trucks that my friend and I decided to start a taco crawl so we can try some great tacos and see which ones are our favorite! We each ordered lengua and tripas, which are our normal go tos, and while the tacos were good, they definitely weren't great sadly and our favorite (El Paisa) still holds the spot for the best. One thing I'd note is that the "ambiance" is very lacking. Obviously it's a taco truck on international, which is fine, but the encampment right next to it, makes it really unappealing. I know that's not their doing, but just context.

Yelp
Ordered through Door dash, We have ordered a lot of burritos through Door dash but find that this is the best place and best price. I'm not a huge burrito person, but I enjoy it here. I didn't even know it was a food truck until I looked up this place, in Doordash it's called Taqueria de Gordo. Their torta is nice too for a change from when I want something a little different. Must get the grilled onions, soo sweet and good. Their pepper is hecka spicy but I like it. We often order here, maybe too often. Sometimes when we order though, they either run out or forget to put the grilled onions. So now we always just order the 3 grilled onions extra for $1. It's worth it.

Yelp
I swear, all the best food comes from taco trucks. Stuck at home and got Tacos el Gordo Doordashed. Their specialty is carne asada, and prices are more than reasonable. They do go a bit heavy on the sour cream, but this place is legit.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I ordered a burrito and several servings of salsa and guacamole. But there are no tortilla chips in my bag. WHYYYYYY???? Why would any self-respecting Mexican restaurant not give you some chips? I'm still trying to figure that out......

Dillon T.

Yelp
Mid asf ‍. They didn't even have a menu up on the truck. Should've known it was mid tho after I ordered an asada quesadilla for $13.88 and only received $1.10 back in change... sure it's 2 cents but really shows the finesse once I got my quesadilla. Holding back on my $$ and the ingredients. The only good and tasteful thing was their green salsa. Definitely don't recommend

Yelp
One of the best trucks of all time. I've eaten at most of the trucks from Lakeshore to 72nd and this remains my all time favorite. They do an amazing job at making sure the meat is perfectly seasoned, trimmed, and cooked for my palate. The truck is always immaculate too. After decades in the food industry, you recognize when establishments do the right thing. Having a white truck exposes everything so I must say its very clean. I had tacos de lengua and the meat was succulent and tender. Such a luxurious bite. My friend had the el dorado style burrito that was crispy and soft. Amazing. Ate it before taking pictures. This place is the benchmark for me.
google avatar

Lizette T.

Yelp
Carne asada burrito and Al pastor burrito were one of the best I've ever had at a taco truck. Horchata was decent. Would definitely come back soon.
google avatar

Tash C.

Yelp
Best taco truck hands down. I've been coming to this taco truck for over ten years. They have a variety of selections including tacos and burritos and a variety of meats. My favorite are the carnitas tacos. I love the little grilled onion they give with the tacos as well. Their jalapeños always SPICYYY. Be careful. A couple things to note - it's cash only so make sure you bring cash. Also, it's a sketchy area so just beware of that. There's a small parking lot behind the taco truck where you can park. Tacos - 5/5 Customer service - 5/5 Price range: cheap
google avatar

Yelp
Solid spot for a late night pick up! Tacos in Oakland never fail me, especially if they're in East Oakland or Fruitvale! El Gordo is a quaint little truck with quality tacos at a good price. The staff here put in work and make absolutely solid tacos with great seasoning and delicious toppings. The truck is located on a corner with a small lot so parking might be limited. The al pastor and carne asada tacos will leave you breathless. CHEAP EATS TOO!
google avatar

Julian L.

Yelp
Best tacos ever. This is the only spot I know of that has suadero meat, which is the most perfectly seasoned, juicy, umami bite. The best time to go, for me at least, is late at night for the drunchies. Shoutout to this place for being open after 2am. At this hour, I notice the meat is sometimes extra crispy from roasting on the rotisserie for a long time, which I really enjoy. Not to mention, the roasted jalapeño pepper and pearl onion pair wonderfully with the tacos, giving your tongue some hydration and spiciness compared to the saltiness of the meat. Sometimes the line is long, but they move quick. There's a small parking lot right after the traffic light off High & International, so be on the lookout for a quick hard right turn. There's also Burger King parking across the street. At night, the white taco truck and bright lighting makes the business stand out. 10/10 recommend

Bibi D.

Yelp
The asada and pastor tacos are my favorite! The meat is juicy and flavorful ^_^ the wait isn't that bad they work quickly and the salsa they add on top is flavorful as well but you can ask for it on the side if it's too spicy for you! The area is a bit sketchy but they do have security! I would suggest waiting by the truck or in your car. Overall 8/10

Yelp
I love their burritos and their churro cheesecake. I live in Walnut Creek but when I'm in Oakland, or even if somebody will go to Oakland, I will go there. I'd like that I can use my credit card because I often don't have cash and it's hard when I get a taco truck that doesn't take credit cardI just finished one of their burritos brought an extra one home and I'm craving the taro cheesecake. I can't wait to go back this is Jennifer Crocker telling you to try tacos El Gordo if you dare because it's fantastic and very addicting.
google avatar

Malena C.

Yelp
I have been trying this for years and I got tripas 6 and they were bitter as heck when I tried pieces we tell them can we exchanged so many times like they dont even understand what the heck were saying got me so upset at them so we change it for steak instead

Jeremy C.

Yelp
Best Mexican truck in the bay area Go here you won't be disappointed A must try ... When you do a repeat customer All the meats are bomb.com but try the SUADRO LIFE CHANGING
google avatar

Violeta G.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber eats on Saturday night and the lengua tacos were not good. I got food poisoning from them. I couldn't eat anything the next day I was just throwing up the whole day.
google avatar

Ander C.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite taco truck in Oakland. I've been coming here for years, even before the taco truck and the truck pulling the trailer got upgraded :) Although the prices have gone up, the food has stayed still very very good. I think the winners here are the buche, lengua, and the al pastor. Can't go wrong with these tacos. And another go to with an hochata on the side is the super burrito with al pastor... omg that thing is so solid! Anyways, the sis a place you got to hit up and try out for sure...
google avatar

Jin K.

Yelp
We drive 30 minutes out to grab Tacos el gordo! Their meat is very flavorful and probably one of the best tacos trucks in the Bay Area. There's always a huge crowd/line when we go. Their Tacos, burritos, and super quesadilla will put you in a wonderful food coma afterwards.

Enzo C.

Yelp
The staff of this Restaurant are really very disrespectful and the food is really Disgusting I definitely do not recommend it. His meat smelled very bad. I do not recommend. They are not hygienic at all.
google avatar

Martha G.

Yelp
A family favorite. Prices have definitely increased since last time I was here. A burrito, a torta, 7 tacos, and one large agua fresca came out to over $50. The food is still great tasting and I definitely thinks it's worth traveling to since no nearby taco place by me is this good.

Mike S.

Yelp
They are very selfish and cheap, the price is huge but they give you so little. The burritos are very skinny and they give you very little meat for $15, the second visit, I told them to add extra meat and I'll pay extra, it cost $4 dollars more. The burrito still came out very skinny with very little meat, it's like they added maybe a quarter of a spoon. lol . $20 dollars was not worth it. This place needs to be shut down for being greedy and ripping people off.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
I usually go here for the late night grub. Food here is alright. Fast delivery even when there are many people lining up. Parking is hard to get at night since it is busy mostly at night. Their portions are huge. I would recommend this place for a decent taste of Mexican food.
google avatar

Monica B.

Yelp
In all honesty, the other taco spots we like were all closed so we Yelped something close that was open late. We got tacos and a couple burritos. The tacos were nothing special as were the burritos. Sorry but won't be coming back...not even if everything else is closed.
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
Wow.... The carne Asada taco and the carnitas tacos were fantastic!! The Super version of each came with sliced radish, cooked onion, lime quarters and grilled jalapeño. SO GOOD! Had it delivered. Wanted to try a new place. So good. Four stars cuz the carnitas was crispy as requested and a wee bit too greazy even though delicious. The two plates of four tacos weren't hot, just warm when delivered. I will order again.
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
We got carnitas and the al pastor tacos. Both were very juicy and flavorful, with pineapple with the al pastor tacos. Carnitas was fried so had yummy crunchy bits. There is a parking lot behind the truck so there was easy parking for us.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Yuck, found hair in my taco. Meat is mediocre. Never ordering from them again! Al Pastor Tacos
google avatar

Chenay K.

Yelp
Love their tacos and wet burritos, never a disappointment. Quick line and service, never have to wait over 10 minutes.
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
Went back here... They are now charging tax on top of the listed price. Yet another hefty increase in price with an additional 10.75%... I usually get two kinds of meat, a year ago it was only a $2 up charge, it's now $3, a 50% increase? The al pastor wasn't even cooking on the spin table. They were shaving the raw meat onto the grill ?!?!? Burritos also got way smaller. I guess I'll check back in another year...
google avatar

Monique C.

Yelp
Best tacos in the Bay Area! Flavor, everything was warm, over exceeded my expectations! Definitely will be coming back

Christopher M.

Yelp
Ah, Tacos El Gordo in Oakland, a gem indeed! Their tacos, they're like a symphony of flavors in your mouth, my friend. The carne asada, so tender and juicy, it melts like butter. And the al pastor, mamma mia, it's marinated to perfection, with a hint of pineapple that dances on your tongue. The salsas, they're fresh and vibrant, adding that extra kick. It's a casual spot, but the quality of the food is top-notch, just like a fine-dining establishment. So, if you're in Oakland, Tacos El Gordo is a must-visit, my friend!
google avatar

Stanley H.

Yelp
I've been going to taco el Gordon's for many years but not once have I experienced hair in my food (first time ever in my life)....
google avatar

Sergio S.

Yelp
Amazing tacos never miss always can gladly come to this place and think to myself I'm gonna get a amazing taco

Esbeyde A.

Yelp
The food is good but the customer service is horrible my husband came in late night for 2 tacos and a burrito and he asked for some cebollitas and sauce and the lady on the front just said no tenemos nada ! It means they don't have nothing .And she walked away that's really rude... I'm a general manager for a restaurant so costumer service is key for a restaurant and I find it really rude of her to treat people that way because we are paying customers... this place should coach / train them to be more kind and respectful to the paying customers . Not against the food but service is trash unfortunately
google avatar

Eva O.

Yelp
I give this taco truck 1 star because 0 are not an option, we stopped by for some tacos and to be honest they are one of the worse tacos I have ever had in my entire life, I honestly don't understand the long lines..... food was disgusting, also please don't get there churro cheesecake I bought 2 $5 each and it was just the crust no filling.
google avatar

Angelica D.

Yelp
I hate to admit it but I had a bad experience here this past weekend. I've been to this taco truck many times over the past years but this last visit turned me off. I ordered 2 carnitas tacos and 1 al pastor taco. The carnitas taco was decently crispy although it didn't have a ton of flavor, the majority of the flavor came from the red sauce that I poured on top. The al pastor taco was so greasy that all 3 of my tacos were swimming in grease that continued to build up. I had to race to eat the tacos because they were soggy. I could only stomach eating 2 tacos because of the amount of grease. I had to throw the other taco away. Also, the grilled onion I was given had dirt on it that I had to peel off of the first layer. I'm hoping the taco truck was just having a bad day but it was a pretty gross experience.

Jordan M.

Yelp
Best tacos in Oakland! Open late, i think of it as my adult version of taco bell (we all had that nasty stuff in college) but with this i can had a better tasting after party meal

Salma B.

Yelp
Ordered for delivery, food was bomb. Carne asada burrito and 2 asada tacos. The horchata wasn't a hit but it helped bring the food down lol
google avatar

Nellie C.

Yelp
So good! Everything is fresh and their salsa is bomb! Parking can be tricky when it's busy but they do have large outdoor tables to eat your food.
google avatar

Bobbie B.

Yelp
I'm starting to love this truck more then 22nd truck. This truck has really good chicken tacos.
google avatar

Curt G.

Yelp
They have a tiny sign basically saying, "no mask, no service". Then two unmasked customers walk up and one of them sticks his head and arms in the window to order some sodas. He looked like he was going to climb in. I don't know why the cashier didn't say something. I'm done with businesses that can't follow guidelines to help prevent Covid transmission.
google avatar

Omer H.

Yelp
Always wondered why this place is packed constantly! For the first time in my life I saw no line to this taco truck and I immediately pulled over. From the first bite you realize this is not just an ordinary taco this is next level. Their main secret is obviously that handmade fresh tortilla but the meat is also so fresh and delicious it's not spicy at all unless you add the salsa they give you on the side so don't be afraid of that. WOW !HATS OFF TO THE CHEF

Sienna M.

Yelp
i got a carne asada burrito at 2 am i was so excited looking forward to it for about a 40 minute drive just to be disappointed they PUT NO MEAT IN IT IM SO PISSED I WILL NEVER FORGET RHAT SHIT WAS ASS
google avatar

Alexander G.

Yelp
Way over hyped, mediocre at best. Tacos were $3 each for a normal size with minimal flavor. This is what I had: Carnitas: weird aftertaste and not fried at all. Just flow cooked. Pastor: it was mixed up super finely and didn't taste much like pastor. Carnitas: this was ok and didn't have much flavor. Overall it was very underwhelming. For $1.50 I would have complained, but for $3 the food needs to be way better.
