The 25 Best Tacos In Los Angeles

"You can’t fake a great taco al vapor, more or less because there’s simply nothing to hide behind. This purist style from Jalisco involves beef cooked for hours over a steam bath until it practically jiggles, paired with corn tortillas that have been warmed to a custard-like texture. And we consider Tacos El Negro, with locations in South Gate and Bell Gardens, the LA al vapor specialist. At El Negro, nearly everyone orders tacos by the plateful and you should do the same (no joke, this place pumps out more steam than a sauna). Top them with a little onion and cilantro, some creamy thinned-out guacamole—plus a dab of their wicked habañero salsa if you’re feeling masochistic—and savor the beefy bliss." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder, brant cox, nikko duren

Tacos Negros Review - Pico Robertson - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Tacos Negros is a new spot run by the same people as , a tremendous Southern comfort food restaurant on Pico. The tacos here meld Southern and Caribbean flavors on hand-made tortillas. Think bacalao - salted cod - with potatoes and olives in crispy shells, or callaloo with fried plantains. We recommend you try a few different ones, to get the best sense of the inventive and straight-up fun tacos they’re making here. But whatever you do, make sure you get our favorite: The pan-fried crab cake with pickled okra, which is topped with My Two Cents’ sweet, spicy hot sauce." - Brett Keating

Google
Small and simple menu, but sometimes simple is best. They have cabeza (beef head), labio (beef lip), cachete (beef cheek) and asada. The asada is a little dry and the labio is a little too fatty for me but what I like doing is taking the bottom tortilla off and then mixing the different meats on that tortilla, giving it a unique textured taco. They are generous with the meat so it’s almost as if I’m able to get a couple extra tacos by separating the tortillas. Because the meat is steamed, it’s very juicy and flavorful. Easily one of my favorite taco spots; I eat here every other week!

Google
The simplest menu I’ve ever seen lol There are 4 types of tacos - asada, cheeks, brains and lips. I ordered 7 asada and one of each other flavors. I liked the cheeks and the lips the best! I also liked that they have a fresh salad bar. Each taco is $2.5 which is very reasonable. The service was fast as well. I got my food in a matter of 5 min or less. I would come back when I’m in the area.

Google
Really good tacos. I can’t complain service was good and friendly

Google
The best tacos in southern California I would Recommend 100% this Tacos they are seamos Tacos or tacos al Vapor That's it!!!! For those fools saying No pastor!!! No chicken!!! Bla,bla!! savory tender meat!! With The green salsa and habanero if you want some Kick!! Simplemente Desliciosooo!!! 😋😋😋

David M.

Google
Very good quality of meat, fast service and many items too add to your meal. You can make your tacos how you want. I like the meat is cut into many little pieces and have no fat

Norma F.

Google
Service is awesome and super fast! And the food is always delicious and never misses. The salsas are super spicy but flavorful!

frank V.

Google
The taco place has 2 types of salsa. Red and green both are good, 4 types of meat. They are really goood and tasty. The person who posted only one type of salsa is lying. They red container for one and yellow container for the other. Please be honest and accurate when placing reviews about businesses. Thank you and have a great day

Google
Good spot for tacos in South Gate/lynwood area. Tacos are good, we tried all of them and they did not disappoint. Parking available. No line when we got there. Good customer service and clean restaurant. Salsas were good too.

Yelp
tacos el negro has some of the best carne asada i've ever had. the meat is super tender but still has a little bite, and you can tell they put care into making it. the tortillas are fresh, the salsa has a good kick, and the portions are solid for the price. the staff is always friendly and quick, even when it's packed. honestly, if you love carne asada, this place will hit the spot.
google avatar

Adriana S.

Yelp
It is a "only" taco restaurant. They are $2.50/each and were good. Satisfied the taco craving. Best to take cash as they charge $0.75 to use a card. They have plenty of sitting space and free parking available.

Yelp
Tacos I was visiting Downey, CA and I had found an awesome taco place. I loved it and it was really good. But it was found on a whim and my friend was determined to take me to the "real place" to get tacos. I mean, the type that gets incredible reviews - that makes authentic tacos. I was checking Yelp and up came Taco El Negro. Apparently it had the "real stuff". We walked in there and they literally had 4 choices - only one of which we understood. The four choices - Asada, Cachete, Labio and Cabeza. When the lady asked what we wanted, I asked for 2 of each. My friend tried to recall how to say 2, we ended up somehow having 3 of each! Oh well. There was a "salad" bar or whatever you call it. It had jalapeño, limes, radish and cucumber. I had no idea what I was supposed to do with it. LOL There were sauces and we tried them. All were good. But the tacos were good, but they were all similar.... Soft meats or.... Brains..... lips.... Cheeks???? I honestly can't say it was the best tacos because I couldn't related to the meats I was eating. In any case, I ate the 8 tacos and called it a day until lo and behold, that night was a taco party after the concert I was playing! That one was more "normal". But I have to give this place 4 stars; one for each choice ending up with 4 authentic tacos.

Yelp
There are sub-genres within the food world. This place is my fav for Al Vapor style tacos. Al Vapor is a cooking technique where meats are steamed not grilled. This place is simple, no frills but very delicious. They protein menu is very small. Cabeza(beef head), cachete(beef cheek), Labio(beef lip), and asada, which is not really asada more like beef. Al Vapor style are usually tender soft meats, or shredded beef. They also flavorize the tortillas, inasume they dip them in the broth or fat, either way greasy, fatty, and yummy. Pro-Tip: Bring hand sanitizer, your hands will be left stinky and greasy. Salsa bar is limited with their green, and much hotter yellowish Habanero salsa. Be weary of the Habanero, its super spicy. I usually use the green and drizzle the habanero for some kick. Again, keep in mind soft meats are their thing. No Al Pastor, no burritos or birria on the menu.

Yelp
Great flavor on the asada tacos with onions and cilantro. Fresh salsas with big flavor and good tortillas. Excellent spot for horchata and a plate of tacos.

Zulma S.

Yelp
We went early in the morning so it wasn't super busy. Menu only has 4 types of tacos: asada, cheek, head, and lip. Loved the cheek (cachete)!! Very tender meat. We'd recommend getting that! Head (cabeza) was decent. Wasn't crazy about the asada... And their salsas were freshly made!
google avatar

Sabrina A.

Yelp
Service was very friendly and fast, and the place was very clean as well with a lot of seating areas. Not your traditional tacos- tortillas are steamed and there's only four choices of meat. Menu is pretty limited- they don't have anything else but 4 types of tacos, horchata, and flan. I ordered 4 carne asada tacos, they were pretty good but their meat is also shredded which I personally don't like. Overall, place is pretty good if you like your meat shredded and tortillas steamed- I personally don't, hence the 3 stars. Horchata was very good!
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying this spot. Limited options on the meat but good selection. Enjoy some delicious asada tacos, with 2 different type of salsas (mild and hot). Freshly made tortillas, makes the tacos taste even better. The service was great, even though it was busy we didn't have to wait for our tacos a lot. The location was busy, but with enough sitting area. Great taco spot!
google avatar

Sharon G.

Yelp
This spot has bombbbb tacos!!! They steam their tortillas and all of the meat is so tender. They only serve four cuts of meat, that's how you know it's good. I tried each meat, labio (lips), cachete (cheek), cabeza (head), and asada. My favorite was definitely the labio and cachete! They were both of tender and the labio was the perfect mix of tender and fattyness. This place gets busy but they make your tacos quick!! Tables fill up quick but they're constantly opening up.

Yelp
tl:dr: 4.5 Stars ~ get cabeza, cachete and labio. The latter 2 is my favorite. 75 cents credit charge. If this is how tacos taste like in Mexico, I would believe it. One of the best al vapor taco shop in the area. If you like steamed meats that melt in your mouth, you've at the right place. $2.50 each taco, priceless flavor. Asada isn't really something I'd get here because I'm at an al vapor spot lol. Nicely chopped, good flavor, not dry. It reminds me of taco truck/restaurants that doesn't use the steak-like bite of cut. Cabeza is what most people come for, and for a good ass reason. Finely chopped, almost like minced meat, reminds me of meat fillings in bakery. So most cabeza at taco stands are cooked in the vat of oil, which is delicious on its own but the collagen still is separate from the meat. This spot has it all finely chopped and mixed with the meaty part. Succulent and melty, so easy to eat. Good salt level already (saltier than cachete & asada). Blast it with extra lime is the way to go. ~~You come to this spot to try the cuts other places don't have: cachete and labio. Cachete is the meatiest of them all; salty-sweet, a savory combo that reminds me of braised meat. Not finely chopped like cabeza, the grains of meat are still visible~ and it is so tender. Damn delicious, I'd eat it over rice, in a tortilla, salad, etc. It's such a great protein base. Perfect salt level, just need a dash of lime. Labio has a nice kiss to it; large slices, light on salt, heavy on collagen flavor, this is my favorite next to cachete. Each bite is juicy and melts in your mouth, really similar to tendon but softer. I like the texture a lot because of the slices instead of being finely chopped. Add some lime and salt for this, you'll know why after taking a bite. That being said, onto the rest. I like how they toast their tortilla with visible heat marks unlike some places where it's just kinda warmed up. Their salsa verde in the yellow bottle is very fresh and tasty with a great balance of salt, tang, and heat. The habanero salsa in the red bottle has an instant kick for those that want a bowel movement. Don't let the establishment's appearance fool you, this place is full of flavor.

Yelp
This place is amazing as always. Asada tacos are on point. The service is fast and friendly. And the Dining area is very clean. Busy but not crazy loud. You got try both sauces the red is hot and delicious. Will be back next time am in the area for sure.

Yelp
Might be one of new favorite taco joints to hit up if i'm ever around the area. They only serve 4 types of meat ( cabeza, asada, labio, and cachete) Big fan of cabeza and they nailed it. Tbh it was kinda hard to tell which meat was which, aside from the asada. But nonetheless it was all so tender and tasty. They had a radish and cucumber bar, where you can self serve. Decent amount of seats, but it was quite stuff inside. Parking is shared with other stores in a lot and they charge 75 cents for credit card, so be sure to bring cash!

Jeeeun s.

Yelp
I tried the carne asada taco and it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely come back again.
google avatar

Daisy G.

Yelp
The lip is so tender, it melted in my mouth. Everything else was just as good. Would definitely recommend the lip though! Would come back if I'm in the area
google avatar

Ariana S.

Yelp
Always enjoy coming here when I'm craving tacos de cabeza. It's always packed, but love how they serve you right away. Only dislike how they don't have many drinks available besides the fountain horchata or bottled drinks. Would be better is they actually served aguas frescas, tho I'm sure they don't do it bc they'd probably run out within the hour. But still!!! It's always crowded but it still has a good vibe, I've never had a bad experience here.
google avatar

Bonnie A.

Yelp
Amazing tacos!! Love coming here for tacos Al vapor. The meat is so clean no fat. I would definitely recommend. For those who have given this place a one star clearly didn't to their research ahead of time and have no clue as to what tacos Al vapor are. As to the service, I mean where can you get good service now a days. Most place have lost their customers service.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
Does anyone know why it's closed . Love the tacos good flavor. Friendly staff and they make your food fast. Salsa is always very good.
google avatar

Irma C.

Yelp
These tacos are delicious. Have been coming here for over a year now and they are generous with the meat. . I love that their have a self serve bar for all your lime, rábanos and pepino needs. Two types of salsas. Lengua and cachete are delicious!! Asada too. Will keep coming back.
google avatar

Martha L.

Yelp
The food was horrible, they made a mistake on the order and they only have a few selections of meat. Not what I wanted at all. The sodas were canned and room temperature. I complained and they just charged for what they forgot to add to selection and all the plates looked the same. No taste at all, not even ice for your canned soda and I drove from far away.

Ximena E.

Yelp
Norma is bad service I came in at 9:52 took my order tolled me Iam not able to eat inside only take out no sign no nothing my believe is u come before time and u could eat inside.horrible service especially norma
google avatar

C. H.

Yelp
All they have is tacos. And salsa in two strengths, hot and really hot, in mustard and ketchup squeeze bottles. They are so delicious though! The tortillas were unlike any corn tortillas I've ever had, soft and flavorful. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

martha c.

Yelp
This place is so delicious and its one of the only place I like cabeza, lengua and caquete. The vapor tortillas are soft. Love this place, generous with their salsa and condiments.
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Nope dot com. Heard so much about this place. Decided to try it and first disappointment was the selection of food. Then the lack of meat selection. Figured I was already here, let's try it. I ordered 6 asada tacos and a Pepsi. I asked to get my soda when my food came out and the look on the guys face you would have thought I asked him how to solve the world energy crisis. He said your order will be right out and handed me the can. Ok. Sat down and got my food and I was bothered on the taste. Tortillas tasted kinda burnt, the meat was dry and NO FLAVOR. I'm sure others would enjoy it, but not me. Sorry.
google avatar

Luis P.

Yelp
This place always hits the spot when I want some tasty tacos! Horchata is great as well! Its always packed when we go, we always take it home
google avatar

Maggie W.

Yelp
Very bland. I wouldn't return. Many street tacos I've had were better. The space is large and the cashiers weren't the most welcoming.

Maria O.

Yelp
Muy buenos los mejores tacos de cachete y asada muy buen servicio las salsa muy buena y te sirven súper rápido

David J S.

Yelp
I ordered 12 tacos, but only received 10 tacos. I tried calling a couple times, and no one would pick up the phone. I did call while they were still open.
google avatar

Marcus O.

Yelp
Superb flavor . My doctor said to cut down on fatty meats but tbh... he can shove his PH UP HIS D... Great service and lovely staff .. the cooks were professional. Great tacos and the way the sauce and cucumbers are layer out... I don't see my self going anywhere else if I'm in the area
google avatar

J E.

Yelp
After just having landed at LAX and yearning for some authentic SoCal tacos I came here... It was the first stop of many I did while in town this time and these tacos were the best! The spice level and flavors were on point! The salsa was perfectly hot and flavorful too. I loved having cucumbers with my tacos to cool the heat in my mouth as well. And they have serrano peppers in their food bar as well. Definitely would recommend this joint for good tacos!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
A fantastic place to grab cheap and delicious tacos! They stick to what they're good at (which is tacos) and if you're looking for burritos, tortas, or anything else, you've gone to the wrong place. I was a bit confused to walk in and not see a menu but they only serve four different types of meat: carne asada, cachete, labio and cabeza. If you pay with a credit card, there's a service charge of 50 cents. There's a self-serve condiment bar and let me warn you...the salsa in the red bottle is super spicy. For $2 a taco, I got one of each meat and I was happy with all of them. While you can't go wrong with the asada, I really enjoyed the cabeza. It was tender and was super delicious. Honestly, they're all good! I can't wait to come back if I'm in the area. This place is legit!
google avatar

Jordan G.

Yelp
Oh boy, oh boy. Tacos, tacos, tacos. Tacos de cabeza, cachete, labio, surtida, asada. Challenge yourself and try something a little different this time. You cannot go wrong with Tacos El Negro. Enjoy. Jordan
google avatar

Bobbie M.

Yelp
Wasn't happy with the taste. It was like shredded meat (asada) The area wasn't clean, homeless were outside sleeping & asking for money. Wasn't a good experience in & outside.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me. Now let me do you a favor and recommend you. These tacos are so good. The salsa de habanero. Oof. Yummy. I want these all the time. If you like lengua cachete and soft meats. Then this is the best place. They are fast and nice.
google avatar

Yelp
¡Hola amigos! Let me tell you about my recent visita a Tacos el Nigro. ¡Qué experiencia más deliciosa! From the moment I walked in, the aroma of freshly cooked carne asada filled the air, making my boca water. First off, los tacos were out of this mundo. The carne asada was juicy y flavorful, and the chicken and pastor tacos were just as sabrosos. Pero lo mejor de todo were the salsas - ¡verde y roja! They packed just the right amount of picante to añadir a ese punch of flavor. Y no puedo olvidar about the generous amount of avocado y toppings - ¡simplemente perfecto! The atmosphere was auténtico y acogedor, and the service was rápido y amigable. Definitivamente volveré for más de esos deliciosos tacos. ¡Gracias Tacos el Nigro for an increíble experience!

Yelp
Excellent tacos, been there 2 days in a row..tan chingones.. lived in the area for a long time and had never tried them but I'm glad i did.. really liked them alot.

Aracely M.

Yelp
Los mejores tacos!!!! Muy buen servicio, amigables y la salsa bar está , pepinos rábanos, jalapeños y limones!!! El ambiente está muy bien con TV para ver cuando estás comiendo!

Didi O.

Yelp
Bad customer service, the cashiers are always to serious. Btw they put me on hold and had me on the phone waiting more than 10min until I hang up because I was tired of waiting to order. And tired calling and the call wouldn't go thru.

Jessica S.

Yelp
WORST TACOS EVER ...GREASY,FLAVORLESS..The cashiers in a bad mood .. & the salsas Are Not kept refrigerated so They were Gooey & sour ..Worst taco spot To be at ..honestly don't waste your time on coming save your money.. what a way to start a Friday .. tacos el negro On to the worst spot In LA..
google avatar

Isabella M.

Yelp
Tacos El Negro is the only place I'll get tacos de cabeza from. They're finely chopped and perfect with extra limón y sal. It does get crowded but the service is really quick and people are constantly in and out. Definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for a good place to get tacos that isn't a lonchera or puesto on the street.
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
These tacos al vapor are as authentic as they come; I haven't tasted tacos al vapor this good since my last Mexico visit. I had only intended to order two tacos de asada, but I ended up ordering three more since I couldn't get enough. Older Hispanics and Latinos filled the dining area, so you know these tacos are GOOD; this is not a hipster taco joint.
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
I had heard about these tacos and finally got the chance to try them. I should have tried them a long time ago. Best tacos de cabeza like everyone had mentioned to me. The meat is super soft and tender and great flavor. The salad are delicious and the habanero one is fire. Service was quick and the workers are nice and friendly.
google avatar

S C.

Yelp
10/10 Best Carne Asada Tacos in California hands down.. The meat was fresh and flavorful!!

Andrea O.

Yelp
My food had a facial hair on one of my tacos. I am very disappointed with this location since I been a customer for many years now. The cooks had a mustache and a goatee. Although I did get a full refund for my 4 tacos. It doesn't excuse it. The cooks should wear a facial net/mask or shave. Also the lady kept my receipt. Mi comida tenia un pelo de barba, aunque me regresaron mi dinero. Esto no es usa nada. Es un asco que sus cocineros tengan barba. Y deverian afeitarse o poner una mascarrilla para los pelos.
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
I ordered the asada and cabeza tacos - not sure if it was because its from ubereats but the tortilla had the weirdest texture so rubbery and gummy tasting. The meats were flavorful and tasty but I was so put off from the tortilla texture.
google avatar

cristina c.

Yelp
Staff with an attitude of rudeness! There is a lack of knowledge regarding how to properly addresspeople. As a matter of fact, I was answering myself. It would be beneficial to retrain your staff, especially the cashier who represents your business on a daily basis.

Eric L.

Yelp
Food is delicious, and affordable. The meat selection is limited, but I much rather prefer quality over quantity.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
Came by for tacos based on the rave reviews. It was good! Friendly service. It was my first time here and they took the time to explain the different cuts. I ended up going with carne asada and it was good! They explained that the meats are steamed and not fried. The green sauce was spicy yet flavorful. The yellow habanero sauce was super hot! Be careful with only a few drops per taco. One little cup of it was more than enough for 4 tacos. Give it a try if you're in the area !
google avatar

Alfredo G.

Yelp
Wow, we had cabeza, labios and asada tacos. Sooooo good, salsas are spicy but tastey. They put a lot of meat in each taco and the tortillas are fresh.
