Tacos El Paisa Review - Washington Heights - New York - The Infatuation

"El Paisa is just across the street from Grito, and the tacos here are just a little bit better. That said, this place is also smaller, more casual, and feels like a cross between a diner and a deli grocery. It also doesn’t have a bar, so it isn’t the best for a fun night out - but if you just want to pick up a quick torta, quesadilla, or a couple of tacos, this place is ideal. Try the chorizo, it’s excellent." - Bryan Kim

Upon entering, we were greeted by a nice girl with a smile. I ordered a plate with 3 tacos, beans and rice. Food was delicious. I especially like their refried beans. Overall this is a solid place with decent prices and I'm glad I tried this place out.

Google
This very tiny place has very Authentic Mexican food. My type of place if you are looking for Authenticity. I has Costillas de Puerco en Salsa roja con Nopales. Very tasty sauce and pork very tender. I would definetely visit again when in the neighborhood. Place is very small so if you are looking for fancy place, this is not your place. I go for the taste of Food.

Geraldine Bombard

Google
We ordered take out for the first time from here and we were disappointed. The tacos were VERY greasy. The food was not very good but what really bothered me was that they don’t use to-go containers. They use regular plastic plates and cover them with foil. Who does that?? The food gets all over the place by the time you get to your house.

Jonathon Sherwood

Google
Food is really good... when they're open. It's a crapshoot to see if they're actually open during their stated business hours

Google
Where do I begin! Huevos a la mexicana was so delicious. Reminded me of a burrito without being wrapped up. Customer service was exceptional, Brenda was very attentive and punctual. Very clean place and family oriented vibes.

Swire Ho

Google
Amazing tacos with homemade hot sauce. They serve you homemade tortilla chip. The soup is a must try. You come here for the food and not he “vibe”. Yes it is a small place but the food are great!

M Peacock

Google
Listen!!!!! If you need a taco FIX! Look no more. The carne asada tacos here are so darn good, they make you dance before eating them! No sauce needed!

Jeremy Gomez

Google
Not the same El Paisa. More rice and cilantro than anything else in the burrito. They gave me the salsa in a plastic bag, totally unusable. Sometimes a good thing just wasn’t meant to last forever.

Yelp
e best menudo I've had in a very long time You have a choice of how much harmony, Pata. It needs no other seasoning the flavor is amazing

Yelp
These are definitely the best tacos in the entire inland Empire. I was so surprised when I found this place. It's just a little hole in the wall, but oh my God what amazing Tacos
google avatar

Yelp
Buen servicio, la comida deliciosa y muy económica . Las costillas con nopales se las recomiendo

Yelp
I called to place a large order so I asked for the manager or owner to ensure quality and the uneducated woman who answered the phone hung up on me, do not recommend this place what so ever

Yelp
Al Pastor burrito w/ crema and pico de gallo... hands down one of the best burritos I have ever had! Don't pass this place up. It is a little tiny restaurant serving some of the best burritos I have ever had. I was passing through town and drove past the restaurant and decided to give it a shot. Wow. I am SO glad I did. The food was amazing. It's a no frills place and the focus is on their food. I loved every bite. If you get the chance, swing by this place and give them a try. I had this just the other day and I already want to go back. Before you go, check their hours as they close early.

Yelp
The price is so expensive but I think that everywhere now. I got the plate of carnitas it was 13.99 I paid 16.50 after taxes. 3. Carnitas Combo They are a bit burn/crispy but I love them that way. Better then carnitas looking like shredded chicken. They are delicious. Also the bean had a lot of flavor and they were fast. Yes I am coming back when I feel to lazy to cook.

Yelp
Pretty good Mexican food but not really a place to dine in on a summer day. I was sweating like crazy eating my menudo but it was worth it. Will go back again in the winter

Yelp
I was in search of a good Mexican restaurant around Upland. I read the reviews here and they didn't disappoint. Some good authentic tasting Mexican food! I had the carne asada taco and shrimp burrito. I liked the carne asada more just because I'm more of a beef eater. But the shrimp burrito was good and tasty as well. Food is made fresh and was piping hot. Homemade salsa was the right amount of spice. Carne asada taco was tangy and salty. Nice balance. Not over salted at all. Will come back for sure!

Yelp
This place use to be the spot now this place sucks. Idk if it's a new owner or what but the food is definitely not the same. The rice taste old the chilliquilles have no taste and the beans are bland. Even the Pina aqua Fresca taste bad. Save your money don't go to this place I won't

Yelp
So crazy as it sounds, I have lived in Upland pretty much all my life, and never heard of this place or even been there. This changed last Friday when I went there during lunch and I was so pleasantly surprised on how good the food was over there. The location is very unassuming and actually not very obvious at all. There is a cow statue at the top of the building, so that would be a great way of recognizing where this place is at. Upon entering, there was a very TINY seating area, with a large counter, with a lady standing at the register. We all ordered. I ordered the shrimp fajitas, which by the way were DELICIOUS. We all sat, I asked to use the bathroom, which was located on the side of the building, outside on the right side. You need a key to get in. Food came out, hot and you can tell it is fresh to order. The prices were very reasonably for the quality of food. Cannot wait to come back here, a hidden gem in Upland.

Yelp
love all tacos especially burritos de lengua very good service phone orders are fast
google avatar

Yelp
Wasn't impressed. Ordered a breakfast burrito only to find that I had black colored potatoes in it. Grossed me out.

Yelp
Love there Burritos. Always great service when ever we come. Highly recommend coming here.

Yelp
This is so sad real sad I am not sure what happened this place has changed so much the food is gross when it was the best . I think the pandemic had something to do with it or did it change owners I do not know what happened . We have not been there since before the pandemic and we decided let go eat . We ordered the carne asada plate no flavor in the meat at all, the beans tasted like can beans they just tried and doctor it up , rice was mushy and no flavor , then i ordered my daughter chicken abondigas soup OMG vegetables were under cook the chicken balls tasted like as if they took all left over meats and rolled them up . My wife and I are saddened on once used to be the best place now the worse. Oh yeah we ordered tamales ughghghgugh never again the after taste is nasty .... im so sorry wow is all we can say .

Alison G.

Yelp
Used to love coming here few years back. Things have changed. They got rid of their delicious chips and salsa. Did they get new ownership? Kinda high price point for suboptimal food.

Yelp
When I moved to Upland from LA I was in search of the special Mexican restaurant that served authentic food and I found it at Tacos el Paisa. I've been coming here for the last 5 years and every dish was excellent. My all time favorites WERE the carne asada burrito and the machaca burrito followed by the barbacoa tacos. They are the best I've ever had and what made them even better WAS the salsa they used; it was spicy and full of flavors. I recently went there, in the last 2 weeks, and at first I immediately noticed there was a different staff so I didn't pay much mind as everything else looked the same. However, when I got home and started eating my carne asada burrito, I immediately noticed the difference in flavor, it lacked those special spices that gave it a wonderful flavor. I then poured some of the red salsa and immediately noticed that it was watered down and when I ate it, it lacked flavor and kick, which complimented the burrito. I thought it may have been an off day so I went back with friends that would eat there and we asked about the previous people that worked there and they told us that the business was sold and was under new management. Tried the burrito and salsa again and it was disappointing and disheartening that the flavors that kept me coming back to Tacos el Paisa were gone. To the new owners, I wish you success in your new business, and urge you to learn and use the cooking methods used by the previous owners to deliver the same flavorful dishes that kept customers coming back. At this point, I'm not sure if I will be back.

Yelp
I've been going to this place for 3 years now. Today was the last day I will be going to them. It seems that they are now under new ownership with a new staff. I miss the girl working the front! She was OG and just hands down had the best vibes. We ordered our go-to morning breakfast burritos. To our surprise, potatoes were raw and the eggs were so over cooked. So disappointing. We had our other regular order a week prior and my tacos al pastor tasted so different! WHY!? Their salsa is now watered down, the meat just isn't as flavorful as it once was. I miss the OG Tacos el Paisa. Now the search begins for a new Tacos/burritos joint. So sad.

Yelp
New owners, new staff, new cook :/ Food sucks now! The Asada burrito barely has any meat (salty) and is filled with cheap rice & salty beans. The machaca breakfast burrito now is not even machaca, it's just dry salty carnitas thrown in eggs, big cubed potatoes, cheese, and salty beans. The horchata tasted like half water. This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant. I'm never coming back here again.
google avatar

Kelly V.

Yelp
Tried this place again because it's literally across the street and when I order the eggs and ham plate it never fails . This time the serving was tiny (I paid $10) and they added potatoes (presumably to account for the missing ham/egg) which I never asked for and now won't eat more than half of what's on the plate. :/ I really wanted to like this place again but I will never come back.

Morgan P.

Yelp
What the heck! Drove all the way over here and they are closed! What are the business hours since they are inaccurate on every website! So pissed
google avatar

Willy J.

Yelp
Best menudo I have had in IE. It came with chile oil. Pretty weird setup in there. Not sure what the place use to be like but, for a dude who was hungover that stuff hit the spot. The buche was great, the pastor taco was good. I hope to stop here again before I have a heart attack. I also got a chile verde burrito. It was not huge, that was lame. Not sure how it tastes because I am full.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, it's a must try!! My mother and I love this place! Serves a generous amount of meat! The Chile is so good! The menudo is delicious The shrimp Diablo is spicy af The carne asad tacos are heaven I hate that this place closes at four!!! I get out of work at four and all I want are good tacos! Staff of friendly! You can call ahead to order!
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Really great and delicious food it's really a true hidden gym located next to the liquor home style cooking that you can not beat
google avatar

Yvonne T.

Yelp
They must've had new owners like the rest of the reviews because before this place was really good! I ordered a torta and it was just not good. Very messy and everything was falling apart.

Yelp
This is going to be one of my hidden gems that I've discovered in a long time. I ordered the carne asada burrito with light beans, guacamole and sour cream. It was truly the best burrito I've had in a while. Everything was portioned out good. I was so scared to try it but I had to give it a go. It was definitely filling so that's always a plus. The green salsa is tasty and goes well with the burrito. I'm so glad I came here. The whole menu looked so inviting so I'll be ordering different things. A good place close to work. Thank you guys so much!!! The service was excellent and my food came out fast. I don't usually write reviews right away but this I couldn't wait. I hope everyone tries the burrito with guacamole and sour cream. It's extra but with the 1.50$ yum yum yum!!!! They also have some desserts so if you want something sweet they got chu. The seating is very intimate so it is limited seating. Hope this place makes it big:) but not to big so I can still get my burrito.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Food is amazing! Cashier is always rude to me. Makes me wait outside & doesn't tell me when the food is ready. Bad customer service over four times already.
google avatar

Ana V.

Yelp
Absolutely delish homemade tortillas, delish meat, authentic Mexican. So good. Hidden gem.
google avatar

Roberto T.

Yelp
We've been coming here since 2007. As soon as I noticed the black and white paper wrapping on my burrito I knew something was off. I looked at the different containers used for the salsa and I knew an era was over. I took a bite of my asada burrito and I knew it was true. It's not the same. It was eh. I've had better burros off a raggedy food truck. New staff? New owners? I will advise you guys to track down the old cooks and learn. Peace.
google avatar

Eve B.

Yelp
Food sucks now. The old cook was great! Where did the old owners & cook go so I can follow them there?
google avatar

Peter U.

Yelp
Can't complain about the hours honestly if you got food like this you can be open when you want. Some of the best beans and rice in town, and they don't get cheap meat.
google avatar

Danny S.

Yelp
What can I say. First, I'd like to start by saying their was really good! Not sure if they're under new management or what but I see a lot of new workers and the food isn't the same. Portions are smaller and not as good! Second their hours of operations is so random. They say open from 0830-4pm but they always close early or are randomly closed during the week. This happens regularly. If you stop by and they're open food is ok.
google avatar

Cynthia M.

Yelp
I tried this place on the recommendation of a co worker on Saturday and it did not disappoint. Carne Asada burrito was so flavorful. I also bought a Chile verde burrito for the next day.... also, delicious. The salsas are hot and and flavorful as well. I had a pineapple water too. Yummy!! I recommend this hidden gem. Closed on Sundays.

Sylvia P.

Yelp
Love this place the food is super good, cant wait to visit again. Love the tacos and especially the camarones a la diabla.
google avatar

Gregg M.

Yelp
Came here for the first time today after recommendations from many friends Ordered the tacos they are great and on Fresh made tortillas. Great flavor in the salsa a
google avatar

Alberto G.

Yelp
Sad to say new owners, the chilaquiles and taco with a soda came out to $18. Ridiculous pricing food was extremely salty and lacked good flavors. The beans were very like full of lard like a paste. I dined in and expected at least plates and the salsas being brought out in large squeeze bottles. Inside I got my food in a to go box ... Food was like eating from a food truck. Very sad Tacos al paisa was amazing before I really hope someone tracks them down. They were one of a kind :(

Jacob H.

Yelp
Used to love this place. Best chorizo breakfast burrito around. Heard they changed owners, so I avoided it for a while. Finally decided to get a chorizo burrito this morning. I will not be back. Prices are up. Quality is WAY down. If you want a bland bean and cheese burrito with a little bit of chorizo, eggs, and undercooked potatoes, go for it. Awful. New owners, if you read this, know that you messed up. You're averaging 2 stars since you took over. You're losing customers. I used to recommend Paisa to everyone, but I will not recommend your establishment. I will actively tell people to avoid the establishment. I hope you make the necessary changes. Learn from the mistakes. The old owners had a winning ticket. If you're going to change everything, change the name so people know not to go.
google avatar

Boss L.

Yelp
I'am completely sadden I loved this place! Food was extremely good and tasty. Loved their tacos ! Now I see there is New Management. It would be nice to have a sign saying New Management very misleading. Food is definitely not the same. Going to miss the family and their very tasty food. I would love to know if they relocated elsewhere. I would make the drive even if it meant going to Mexico lol

Jennifer R.

Yelp
So sad...I've been going here for years, years and used to love this place. They had the best carne asada tacos, with yummy home made tortillas and bomb red sauce. Went today only to be disappointed. Carne asada had no taste. No more home made tortillas. Red sauce had no kick. And now they charge to use a card. FYI, you are not allowed to charge customers to use a card, read your merchant contract / terms of use. My horchata wasn't good either. Can someone post where the cook went to? She was an awesome cook. I hope the new owners start to read these Yelp reviews. Looks like I'm not the only one who noticed.

Omar G.

Yelp
really very friendly, very tasty food, small spot but highly recommended, quiet atmosphere, great service.

Steven F.

Yelp
Salsas completely lost flavor and kick. I used to get a bean and cheese burrito about twice a week and now its sad to say that I will not be returning after I tried this new one. Also, prices went way up, even for using your credit card. Overall, the food and salsas lost flavor and prices got more expensive. Not a good combo.

Jackie C.

Yelp
I'm so sad that I will no longer be able to taste their delicious red salsa they used to have . What happened to my favorite spot ? Bought a burrito today and it was so bland and the little meat that was in the burrito was chewy. I wish the old staff or owners never changed :( I'll won't be returning.

Julia A.

Yelp
What happened to this place? It is not what it used to be. They should change the name too since they changed their recipes. No more home made tortillas, the sauce is different, their meat is less quality, I just bought a menudo and they barely serve you anything, probably half of what they used to, you probably have to order two to get what's expected. They charge you to use credit or debit card, they don't sell deserts anymore, wow what a unfortunate thing to happen, they had a good thing going, sold it and the new owners decided that this locations loyal customers deserve less food and quality
google avatar

Rennie B.

Yelp
New owners Food isn't good. Chicken dry unseasoned and the portions of beans and rice are small. Used to be my favorite Now I gotta find a new place
google avatar

Pilar H.

Yelp
Small location yet clean and inviting. Best tacos I've had in ages - great customer service!

Isabel C.

Yelp
It's a very small place but the food is amazing! Definitely recommend tacos and albondigas!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Upland doesn't have many authentic delicious Mexican restaurants. This place is a great score for delicious food. The whole menu is delicious. Enjoy !!!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Hours are unrealistic. You can go in for lunch time and they'll be closed. They aren't open for dinner time. When I first had them I had 4 asada taco and 2 al pastor. Was delicious! Second and third time flavor was good but I had crazy stomach pains after and heartburn. Never happens when I eat even the most seasoned or spicy foods. Saddens me to say, I don't recommend going. This area is in dire need of a yummy taco joint.
google avatar

Marla O.

Yelp
This place is the bomb Love the carne Asada tacos the the burritos with green sauce. Only issue I have is that they never answer the phone when trying to place an order
