New Berkeley Taco Truck Is Rolling Out Handmade Tortillas and Super-Sized Tortas | Eater SF

"At Berkeley’s newest taco truck I found a menu that reads like a rundown of current buzzy taco trends: quesabirria, handmade tortillas, quesatacos, mulitas, a hybrid “pizza birria,” and al pastor sliced off a vertical spit with a pineapple on top. The family-run operation, led by Raul Rodriguez and his daughters, has been around four years (mostly selling in Richmond) but moved to its current spot three months ago and now draws a steady flow of customers who come for items that are hard to find in Berkeley. Though many of El Rulas’s special items are associated with Tijuana, the family actually hails from Mexico City and prepares many dishes — that al pastor, for instance — in the Mexico City style. The heart of the menu is fresh masa: any taco can be requested on a thick handmade tortilla pressed to order (for $3, only a $0.50 upcharge), and they also sell large handmade-tortilla quesadillas topped with a layer of crispy cheese, chopped lettuce, and crema; Mexico-style huaraches with nopales salad; and monstrous tortas — their overstuffed torta Cubana (chorizo, a fried steak cutlet, ham, sliced hot dog, a thick wedge of queso fresco, and oozy melted mozzarella) is a distinctive favorite at $13. Rodriguez says they added quesabirria after Berkeley customers kept asking; in Richmond they’d be one of many trucks serving these dishes, but in Berkeley they stand out, and many new customers — used to paying more at local taquerias — are surprised by the prices. The truck is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m." - Luke Tsai

Best Quesabirria Tacos at Restaurants and Taco Trucks in Oakland, SF, Richmond, and the Bay Area | Eater SF

"The menu at this new Mexico City-inspired Berkeley taco truck is a mishmash of every current taco trend — mulitas, “pizza birria,” and handmade tortillas. It’s also jumped on the quesabirria freight train, serving a juicy version made with the family birria recipe." - Luke Tsai

Google
I check the menu in on the pictures show 11 for a quesadilla but when I pick my order the girl was rude , we order a Cubana torta and Asada quesadilla and she charged me $43.00 and when I ask for one side the salsa and one sour cream she got mad at me. Then when I tried the mear from the quesadilla was no flavor no salt, and for $20 quesadilla . But the worse was the total it was gross so big the smells very disgusting like expired cheese or something we and they don't cut the total. Please you need update your prices from the menu on goggle

Google
Bingo! Finally found a good local spot that serves real Suadero, (slow cooked beef from a "comal", the convex pot with the raised middle), made by some Taqueros, who use great fresh ingredients and are highly skilled at putting together a good taco which I'm telling you, is no small thing. I ordered three Suadero tacos and my friend ordered a sope, which is like an extra thick tortilla top with a ton of yummy stuff. I was surprised to see that there are actually Doritos, and other potato chips that are created specifically for an audience that wants extra grease, extra salt, and extra everything. Never seen that before. Lol. As little as I like to share local secrets, this place is a great taco spot, especially if you like real Suadero. Conveniently located on the corner of Gilman and San Pablo. They're open about 5 or 6 days a week. I think. Highly recommended! If you can though, avoid the heavy set young lady who works there sometimes. She has a nasty attitude, and doesn't get orders right despite repeated asking Piero If you want to see more of my reviews, which are now at 25 million views, click on my profile and follow the map! Thanks!.

3.30.21 It is rare that I give 5 stars to any restaurant or food truck for that matter, but these guys are a gem. I'm almost torn to let the cat out of the bag because this is just too good. I have yet to explore their full menu, but I can without a doubt recommend their tortas, which are a Mexican sandwich on a torpedo-like roll with the meat of your choice, avocado and other veggies. They do not skimp and their meat options are delicious. At $10, it's a deal! I am big fan of Al pastor (marinated pineapple pork on a spit) and they definitely nailed it here. Don't forget to ask for their delicious spicy salsas. The red one will have you wishing you grabbed two. 4.9.20 update: Their quesabirrias are delicious (cheesy shredded beef taco w/meat broth for dipping)

Google
excellent tacos! had the pastor, carnitas, camarón and nopales, all great. came with nice onion and radish garnish plus tasty salsa verde and a salsa picante (think it was habanero). highly recommend.

Google
WOW!!!! this place was way better when they were on their trucks, even though their customer service was terrible a least the food was good and served a little better, now their prices are up the roof and their tacos barley have any meat on them, i think $4 per taco is way excessive for it's size, I am willing to pay $4 or even more if the tacos were well served. also their customer service is horrible, they make you feel like they are doing you a favor to eat there and it should really be the other way around. message to the owner!!!! please have all your staff take an extensive training on customer service...!!!! JUST SAYING!!!

Mailo R.

Google
Best Mexican food in the area! Highly recommend! Really good customer service, people are really friendly and funny. Best Mexican taco truck I ever been to. I love it here. They don’t ever miss. overall 20/10 taco truck. I love it

Google
Serve God portion sizes on their Tacos. Good balance flavor.

Google
Love it! Carne Asada burrito was on point, comes with free chips and two different kinds of salsa, everything was very tasty, finally someone makes a burrito that is long instead of short and fat, makes it easier to eat, although nobody else was there it took them less than two minutes to make my order! I will be back!

Yelp
Taco truck location or times need to be updated . Showed up to find no taco truck , and a tamale post instead

Yelp
I got that monster burrito and it was not good. As far as service, the music is so loud U have to yell your order. Ambiance: it's in a parking lot. This place is nothing to write home about. And about that burrito, I was on the toilet immediately after I ate it. The meat was dry. It wasn't tasty and delicious. Shell super dry on the inside. The best thing I got from here was the Jamaica and the cup it came in.

Yelp
The food rules at Tacos El Rulas! Located in the parking lot of two separate businesses, an auto shop and smog shop on the corner of Gilman Street and San Pablo Avenue near the border of Albany and Berkeley, California, Tacos El Rulas is a Mexican food truck from father and daughter duo of Angeles and Raul Rodriguez that specializes in traditional Mexican takeout dishes sold at affordable price points along with some modern takes on a number of dishes from Birria tacos to Hawaiian-style Mexican sandwiches. After starting over four years ago parking at locations in Richmond, Tacos El Rulas really hit its stride when they moved to their current location in late 2020 across the street from Tokyo Fish Market and a Dollar Tree. It is here that Tacos El Rulas received additional buzz thanks to an article praising the Rodriguez's bringing authentic cuisine to this neighborhood in Northwest Berkeley. This is why I have wanted to come here for quite some time as the article had me intrigued and their location was so easily accessible from a quick drive from the Gilman Street exit off of Interstate 80 on the weekday afternoon that I decided to get lunch for myself and others back home. Thankfully there was a metered parking space in front of their truck that I managed to snag so I quickly perused their menu and ordered as by the time I arrived no customers were present but by the time I left there were plenty of customers waiting for their orders. The menu at Tacos El Rulas is broken up into categories including their Soft Tacos with various options for fillings, Classics, Sandwiches, Handmade Fare and Beverages & Snacks. The first menu item I decided to order was their Burrito from the Classics section of their menu, with my choice of a Carne Asada filling, rice, beans, onion, cilantro, hot sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla. I also decided to order a La Torta from their Sandwiches section of their menu, with my choice of Carnitas, which is slow cooked pork, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, melted cheese, queso fresco, mayonnaise, and pickled jalapenos served on a toasted white bun. And since I was here and decided to make my journey here well worth my time with multiple meals, I decided to order a Mulita from their Handmade Fare section of their menu, which was a taco sandwich with two handmade corn masa tortillas with cheese and my choice of Pastor pork filling, which is spit-roasted adobo pork and pineapple. I really wanted to order a Horchata drink from their Beverage menu but owner Raul who took my order let me know that they were out of that drink and none of their bottled and canned drinks that were on ice in front of their truck didn't intrigue me. All told my meal cost 26 dollars before tip, which wasn't too bad of a price point considering how much food I received this afternoon. It took about ten minutes for my food to be freshly prepared from both of the Rodriguez's, and I was certainly surprised how large my burrito and sandwich were in size. When I got home with my meal, I decided to feast on my Mulita first and it was a tasty if somewhat unremarkable treat, but it was also filling lunchtime meal. I decided to save my burrito and sandwich for lunch on successive future days and was not disappointed as they were both easily sharable and filled with plenty of savory ingredients that makes me love freshly prepared Mexican cuisine. Perhaps the real surprise was my La Torta as I wasn't expecting anything quite that large and for the cost of 11 dollars is a real steal. With the times we are living in, prices have gone up one dollar for a number of dishes at Tacos El Rulas, including my burrito and sandwich. But now I can't wait to come back and try their signature tacos, especially their Birria Taco, their Cubano Sandwich which adds ham, chorizo and Milanese breaded steak to their signature Torta, and their Huaraches which is an oval handmade grilled corn masa base topped with a filling of my choice and all of their fresh fixings including a cactus salad. Talk about authentic! And at Tacos El Rulas you're getting all of that plus so much more. Here's to hoping their reign on this nondescript corner of Berkeley is a long and fruitful one for Tacos El Rulas, with the quality and quantity of their dishes, they have met the hype and then some in my humble opinion!

Yelp
I love that there are more taco trucks where I live. This place was parked in Yen's Auto, which is located across the street from the Dollar Tree. I ordered an asada burrito and two tacos (pollo and lengua). The lengua taco was probably my favorite of the three. Pros: -they accept credit cards -staff were friendly and properly wore their masks -they gave me complimentary chips and dip and a Chile lollipop -tacos come with a generous portion of meat -their grilled pepper and onion were so good -they have a bunch of snacks, chips and drinks that you can also purchase Cons: -n/a

Yelp
Tacos El Rulas is parked in a parking lot nearby KC BBQ. tacos aren't the go to eats here. there's plenty of other specialities. saw an al pastor spit later in window. offerings: tacos, burritos, queso taco/burrito, quesadillas, "sandwiches", sopes, huaraches, mulitas, beverages. eats: lengua/birra taco @2.50 -generous portion of proteins, moist juicy beef brisket, half-moist lengua. -garishes of radish, jalepeno, green onions, onions, cilantro. *would order one of the specialities next time. -couldn't check in as food truck location is listed as richmond.

Yelp
Excellent tacos! I already had lunch waiting for me at home but I have passed by this food truck many many times and decided now was the opportune time to try one. I pulled into the open space near the truck and checked out what they had to offer. It all looked great but would it taste great? FOOD: The short answer is yes! Because I had lunch available, I only got the one taco. But the tortillas were nice and soft and full of flavor, and the meat is tender and also packed with umami. They had a couple of things on the menu I'd never heard of but want to try and many different combos of meat and dishes. Quesabirria, sopes, tortas, etc. interestingly, they do not have any combo plates or side dishes so if you were looking for beans and rice, they don't have it here. If they do, it wasn't on their menu at all. For that reason, I gave them one last star because the food was really tasty. SERVICE: Quick and friendly. Definitely worthwhile. Packaged nicely and located in a place where you can actually stop and park your car! COST: Very reasonable. I will cert be back to try even more things off their menu.

Yelp
I have had this spot bookmarked since it came to my attention, either via Yelp or Berkeleyside Nosh. It's been several weeks and I no longer remember. Today I came here while Alan was having lunch w/ a friend. I arrived around noon and saw a small crowd waiting. I drove into the lot and found a parking space close to the truck. I went over to the crowd, asked if people were waiting to order or for their food and most were waiting for their food. There was one man in front of me who was ordering. When it was my turn I asked for two lengua tacos and was dismayed to learn they were out of lengua, which the woman at the window assured me was temporary. I decided to order two quesatacos w/ carnitas as the meat, everything on them. I didn't know what "everything" meant, but was game. Then I waited. The friendly crowd skewed male (one other woman arrived after me) and Hispanic. Everyone was masked, aside from a latecomer on a motorcycle who wasn't, although he wore his helmet when he ordered, which served as a mask. What struck me was how considerate everyone was not to be cutting in front of anyone. The man right after me was concerned after ordering that he had inadvertently cut in front of the two men who had arrived after him. I told him that they had arrived after he was at the window and that he was fine. It was sunny but windy and I went to my car to fetch my hat. When the man in front of me received his food he told me I would be next and when I did receive it and was walking to my car, the man after me told me, "Enjoy the food, mama.". In all it was a lovely experience. When I got home the food was still hot. Served in a compostable paper tray, as opposed to the paper plates you usually get from taco trucks, in addition to the quesatacos there was a long, slender, roasted pepper, a small roasted skin-on white onion, and small containers of salsa, red and green. I didn't eat the pepper, but the onion was delicious. The tacos were very tasty and I would have them again. My disappointment at the lack of lengua was completely assuaged. I didn't taste the salsas because the tacos were so good they didn't need additional flavor, but the salsas smelled good. They also make sopes and huaraches, both of which I like. Today they have fish tacos and grilled shrimp is on the menu, both of which Alan would like. They take credit cards as well as cash. This may be the best taco truck in the area and we will be back.

Yelp
Excelente Great food at very reasonable price and conveniently located Can't beat the prices And great variety for a taco truck!

Yelp
The Mulita ($5) with Pastor filling was amazing. The looks are deceiving. When it came out, I was disappointed because it seemed like just a sad, flat, circular tortilla, but the taste was delicious and the Pastor was very tender. The Cubano Sandwich ($13) is filled heavily with meat so it definitely merits its price. The Quesabirria comes with Consome (beef broth), but they only give you one per order so do separate orders if you want multiple cups. They had some of the best Consome I've tried, but I felt the Quesabirria was a bit doughy and got cold quickly. As for customer service, the cashier was very nice and patient as my mom had a lot of questions.

Yelp
Great food and the prices are great too. Most fillings are excellent though the carnitas are too salty sometimes. Mulitas are delish.
google avatar

Yelp
Unassuming in appearance but appropriately named because the food is exceptional. Stopped by for lunch and was happy to try her out. Bought a carnitas burrito, and lengua, cabeza, and carne asada tacos. Everything was fresh and delicious. Will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Today I wanted to experience the taco truck "Taco's el Rulas" new location a couple blocks from my house. Three people and a big truck. Located on the corner of San Pablo and Gilman in Berkeley almost Albany. I walked up and no one was there. Yay!!! It looked clean and had a "Passed" sticker in the window from the health dept. I ordered one carnitas street taco ($2.50). Easy-peasy right? NO ! First I gave him a $20. He asked if I had a smaller bill. I didn't. He had to make change out of the tip jar. This is a business. Noon is the lunch hour. Please, in future, come prepared with a proper bank to help your customers. Sadly for the next customer he also had a $20. I waited and waited and waited. Over 10 minutes for one taco. In the meantime, the 6 customers that arrived after me, all had their food and left. I was still wondering where my taco was. In the meantime I asked him if he had any jalapenos in escabeche (pickled jalapenos). He didn't know what I was talking about. I finally got my little order and went home to eat it. When I opened it. It was a nice looking taco. Definitely worth the price. It had a slice of lime and guess what else? Escabeche. That was the stuff, he didn't know what it was, but served it to me. If there will be a delay for any order, rule number one, tell the customer when they order it will be a few minutes on that item. Then they can ask for something fast and easy. Since it's prepaid, we couldn't cancel the order. They had the money. My wife was almost late for work. Had we known, she could have called in to let her coworkers know she was delayed. Final thought. Good food. But I will ask if it's fast next time. Maybe I just ordered the wrong item for easy prep. If you like our review, please don't forget to Vote below for us (up to 3 areas to vote). Please friend and follow us as well.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best taco spots and trucks in the East Bay for sure. Service is always super quick, even when they're busy. The birria tacos are fire and my #1 go to but i recently ordered the asada tacos and they certainly did not disappoint.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
The al pastor here is really good. The right order here might just be 4 al pastor tacos. But the lengua and carnitas are solid as well. The carnitas is more moist than crispy. I got a cheesy taco, a mulita, and a regular taco and I think the cheesy taco is the right mix of manageable and decadent.

Yelp
A taco truck with a Mexico City twist and flavor. ⁣⁣ I found a hidden taco truck in San Pablo Ave near Gilman in #Berkeley. I stopped by and the first thing I saw was a poster of tortas cubanas. That grab my attention. As I looked through the menu I saw something that reminded me of a taco spot in Mexico City's El Zocalo -- . A moment of nostalgia came through me.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I immediately placed a tinga quesadilla order. As I was ordering, I saw un de al pastor -- a rear thing around this area. So of course I had to order some tacos al pastor. I added some tacos de carnitas just to see how they compare to other places.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I must say that the quesadilla de tinga, made with a hand made tortilla, takes the . The al pastor tacos had great seasoning and well cooked, and the carnitas meat was nicely fried, juicy and cut in nice chucks. They didn't disappoint.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I recommend paying this taco truck a visit. ⁣⁣ -⁣⁣ -⁣⁣ #mexicanfood #tacos #tacotruck #foodie #bayarea #distritofederal #DF #mexico #gilman #alpastor #carnitas #quesadillas #delicious

Yelp
Don't let the clean cut looking taco truck fool you. I stopped by as it looked decent but it's far from it. Ordered a few burritos with chicken. The damn burrito was small in size, bland, rice n bean filler with a couple cubes of chicken. What a rip off! Had the food been good, I wouldn't care but it's mediocre and portioned small. Word to ownership - fix one or the other if not both.

Yelp
Love this place! I am so happy they are in the neighborhood; we haven't had a delicious, authentic option like this in a while. Excellent tacos (recommend the al pastor, camaron and carne asada in particular), good prices and very nice women working there. Worth a trip to try their full range of options. Please go check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
Yum! I saw reviews on Nextdoor about this Taco truck and had to try it! Burritos for $9 (with chips) great deal! Quesadilla for $9 (side salad and sour cream) $9. Got the chicken burrito and carnitas quesadilla (there was a crunch in the carnitas). We got there on around 1:45pm on Saturday (no line). This may be our goto burrito place (we used to go to the ones on Solano Avenue). This Taco truck is located in the parking lot of Yen's garage, so parking on the side streets or in Yen's little parking lot.
google avatar

Danny H.

Yelp
I've only been here twice, and I have yet to try anything other than the Carne Asada burrito, $10 gets you a perfectly portioned tasty burrito with two different kinds of hot sauces and complementary chips, not your typical or standard menu, I will be back!
google avatar

Jay H.

Yelp
Worst burrito I've ever had! Rice was hard af and flavorless, steak only in the middle of the burrito. I was the only person in line at 4pm, that should been my clue to leave. Rice-a-roni burrito for 80% of my experience. Tasted disgusting! I wasted $20 here on a burrito that left me feeling like I ordered a plate of some bad rice with a flour tortilla. Truck looks so nice and inviting, but it's terrible food! Had a steak burrito, won't ever come here again.
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
This place is pretty good ,though I think it's inconsistent. Sometimes it's delicious sometimes it falls flat. This is the second time I've gotten home and found that there is no avocado or sour cream in my burrito ,when I paid extra for it. It's really frustrating because I'm gonna drive back and it's not like those aren't very important ingredients!
google avatar

Soenke M.

Yelp
This taco truck is new in the neighborhood sand an awesome addition. They are parked by Yen's garage so the is plenty of parking. I tried their beef and chicken tacos and they are great and come with some radish and grilled onions. You should also try the sope. Never had it before but it is amazing. A hand made corn tortilla with queso fresco, your choice of meat, beans and lettuce.
google avatar

Caitlin B.

Yelp
Great taco truck! I've tried several different tacos and a burrito! Loved the cheesy chorizo taco and chicken burrito. The burrito came with chips and red and green salsa. And the tacos had great radish and onion sides. Hope they keep coming to San Pablo/Gilman!

Jennifer H.

Yelp
They literally scrapped the burnt pieces of meat and stuck them on my tacos. I thought because of the decent ratings they would be good and honestly, the carnitas aren't even real Mexican carnitas. They put burnt charcoal on my pastor tacos. I usually got to the taco truck near the Hotsy Totsy and wanted to try these. Never coming here again. Also super overpriced for the quality of everything.
google avatar

H Y.

Yelp
Excellent al pastor tacos at 2.50 each. 10 credit card min. Friendly and quick. My new favorite truck.
google avatar

Chaya B.

Yelp
They said they were changing their menu, so no prices were listed. I think the burritos were $9?! Tacos $2.50 each. I hate to be a naysayer but the food was not good. No flavor. I've had many a burrito in my day, even had food in Mexico! I will have to give this truck a hard pass. People were nice, otherwise no stars! I'm surprised so many good reviews, it was awful. My friend spit out the al pastor! Maybe we caught them on an off day? Grilled chicken was white no seasoning or grill marks?! Also corn chips tasted like they were from a Costco 7 pound bag?! A big NOPE

matthew m.

Yelp
Amazing 10/10 would recommend best tacos in the bay!! Best burritos also great customer service. Super cheap for the quality.
google avatar

Paul A.

Yelp
Birria was deep in flavor and tender to the chew. Huraches were loaded with ingredients but rather tasteless. Staff seems a bit aloof. Def try the birria - so worth it!

Mireya V.

Yelp
I was just here and there was no taco truck. So upset. It was going to be my first time, not there won't ever be a first time.

Tn C.

Yelp
Coming from LA I have really high expectations for Mexican food. We got a torta, burrito, 2 different kinds of sopes. While I can appreciate the full menu it lacked luster and flavor. The salsa was too lemony and lacked true flavor as well. I'm so sad! I was really looking forward to the food. The carnitas didn't taste like carnitas it tasted like Buche. The asada and beans were just blah. I do appreciate the kind and sweet service and the freshness of the avocado and queso fresco.

Kristin B.

Yelp
Don't pass this place up for the bland-ass chain in the strip mall across the street. This is the real deal. Fresh, flavorful and extremely budget friendly. I only ordered a burrito, and I wish I'd brought a friend-- it's definitely big enough to share. So excited that this truck is in the hood!

C K.

Yelp
Love their al pastor tacos -- topped with pineapple and the quality of meat is great. On top of the food being a 5 the service is A1 also; such friendly and accommodating staff, I'll definitely be back soon!

Yelp
Discovered this spot courtesy of sf.eater.com's "15 New Restaurants to Try in the East Bay", published March 1st, 2021. First impression I received was upon placing the order. The young woman taking thee orders seemed like she really didn't want to be there, and that any questions about the menu were a nuisance to her. I ordered a Hurache, and found it suspicious when upon asking how long my order would take, she said "About 7mins". 7mins later, I picked up my food, and the young lady kindly obliged my request for a squirt of hand sanitizer. I went to eat my food, and noticed there were napkins, but no fork. So I returned for a fork, and was anticipating finally digging into my meal. To my deep disappointment, my food was cold. The base of the Huarache tasted partially cooked, as if one was supposed to take it home and finish cooking it themselves. The meat was precooked, and it seemed as if no real effort was made to reheat it at all. I hesitated writing this review, as this is a small business, and business is challenging in the time of Covid. I could've looked thee other way when it came to Customer Service, but when my meal receives the same disregard as I felt....I at last had to speak on it.

Sohyung L.

Yelp
Simple but delicious. I've only tried their tacos. The meat quality and taste is so good, especially al pastor, chorizo and carne asada. I've tried those in many other places but here is the best. It is smoky, savory and juicy. JUST RIGHT! Nice portion compared to the price.
