The Five Definitive Burrito Styles of Los Angeles - Eater LA

"In LA, the neighborhood taco truck doesn’t even have to be mobile. La Estrella, for instance, parks its truck full-time on the same stretch of sidewalk in Highland Park." - Eater Staff

Erika was so sweet and efficient. Wait time for food was very timely. Thank you guys. I’m from Houston and these were probably in the top 5, maybe even the best Pollo Quesadillas I have ever had.

G Tseng

Google
Note this is not the Tacos La Estrella that serves Cali Burrito (I asked and they were honest about it, which I appreciated). Ordered the nachos with lengua for $11. The cheese is like the “nacho cheese”, which is that soupy cheese used in theaters. Lengua was good. Portions were generous. I’m probably not going back unless it’s for tacos or burritos.

Google
Extraordinary food - so simple but so memorable! My mouth is watering at just the thought of their tacos. My advice: order a lot of different ones! You will not be disappointed. A FANTASTIC food truck experience!

Google
The lunch truck was perfect as soon as they opened the restaurant the quality went down bad and it smells in there not a bad smell but more like cheap cleaning products definitely not fabuloso lol

Francisco Rubalcaba

Google
Horrible , I paid 10$ for a burrito and it was so small it looked more like a 5$ burrito they skimp you out so bad

Tony Fierros

Google
Don't let the looks of this unassuming taco truck fool you. These were one of the best carne asada tacos I've ever had. Highly recommend it if you're in the area.

Oh My Gandhi

Google
Delicious. Asada tacos are incredible.

Google
I recently visited La Estrella and had a great experience! The tacos and burritos were delicious and the service was incredibly fast. The staff were also very polite and helpful. Prices were good and definitely worth it. Highly recommend La Estrella!

Yelp
A staple in the community and a staple in my heart. I frequent this truck about twice a week. Their recipes remain superb. It's a pleasure being greeted by their staff Johanna, Erica, and Liz. Phenomenal service. My go-to is a carne asada burrito and two asada tacos. Outdoor dining available. Plenty of street parking available close by.

Yelp
Price hikes and smaller portions? Make it make sense. The food is great. Never disappoints. It's been some years since I've come to get a burrito here. 9 bucks for carne asada no complaints. Then I'm handed the burrito and it's like half the size it used to be. I grew up here and the burritos were pretty sizable. Prices will go up again in June by their sign. Which probably means your burrito is gonna be the size of a taco.

Yelp
We come here 1-2 times a month. The carne asada burrito is my favorite. Never disappoint's.

Yelp
Oh my goodness I think this has to be my favorite taco truck in all of LA! I've been getting their carne asada burritos with everything + green sauce, but tonight I got their carne tacos with the red and *chefs kiss* it was so good, the red spicy is extremely spicy and delicious (fair warning on the spice level) *laughs*
google avatar

Lily R.

Yelp
Favorite taco truck in eagle rock. Affordable and delicious. The red salsa is so good!!!

Yelp
I was cravin tacos the other day cuz u kno taco tuesday and wanted to check this spot out! The guy who took my order was pretty rude and after i said i wanted some tacos he asked if I wanted anything else n literally was thinkin what else I'd wana order and it wasn't even 5 seconds later u can see him rolling his eyes and made a puff sound as if he's so impatient and as if I was holding up the line when mind you there was only one other customer that walked up besides for me! He's lucky I just didn't say cancel my order and I was being patient cuz I sure was tempted too! I ordered 4 tacos chix and carne and they were pretty good but if u can't handle spicy just don't order it with the hot sauce! The green sauce complemented it so it wasn't as spicy! I love green sauce I also ordered 2 quesadillas one with just cheese and meat the other with everything but they didn't even put the toppings such as cilantro etc. it was supposed to come with. The quesadilla was nothing especial and I wouldn't order it again it just wasn't worth it! It came with lots of cheese like a whole blob that I had to remove some cuz it was too much! If I was in the area i'd prolly order just their tacos again. Tacos $1.75 each Quesadillas $8.00

Yelp
Best burritos in town! My husband and I are obsessed with the vegetarian burrito (and I am not a vegetarian) The green salsa is the absolute best! I always say I'll save half for later but its just too good to not eat the whole thing. Also love the beef tacos. I have to say I was not a fan of their chicken tacos though, the chicken tastes like its from a can honestly.

Yelp
I was literally staying around the corner from here and so decided to try it out. I didn't get anything besides the tacos and I was really happy with them. I've had all their proteins, it's just limited to five and they're all really good. The lengua though has stood out, it was so soft and tender that it melted in my mouth. There's not much choice here, it's either a taco or a burrito, but I like that. A lot of trucks try to do so much, with a bunch of different filling options and a bunch of different menu items. La Estrella keeps it simple and limited and, I think does them well. Pretty no frills, there aren't a lot of fancy extras, what you get on the plate is it, but besides a little dash of salt I don't see the need to add anything further. Prices are pretty standard for trucks but food wise it's so far been the #2 taco truck I've had.

Yelp
Hands down BEST tacos in LA! My man introduced me to this place. He's been coming here all his life. The prices are cheap and the quality is top notch! Get your asada with EVERYTHING on it.

Cesar C.

Yelp
Food is good and I used like coming here , but the girl that works and takes the orders , man she is awful , and I tried to ignore her and kept going back but the last time was enough I feel like she only wants to treat "certain" customers with respect , she's nasty and rude and when I tried to order more hot sauce it seemed to bug her , like wtf ? I'm paying for it ? Then don't sell it stupid bitch if it's problem , she's nasty and I'm not going back .......if you don't like what you do , do something else, I remember back in the days when she wasn't there, great place to go !!!!

Yelp
Still one of my favorite taco trucks for good flavorful Al Pastor. The value here is just hard to beat and the atmosphere is simply authenic. Getting one of each is the best way to fill a empty tummy, and their salsas are consistently good. Don't worry about the heartburn if that's your gripe. Just wash everything down with a Jaritos!
google avatar

Kristine M.

Yelp
The real deal of tacos from a truck. No corners cut. Pure join. So much attention to details.
google avatar

William D.

Yelp
Great food but totally disappointed with my 8 dollar mini burrito tonight, just because they ran out of rice doesn't mean you get to shrink it down ‍
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 20 years! The Taco Stand on Figueroa is pretty good too, but something about the truck! Just tastes slightly better! Carne Asada tacos are FIRE!!!! Super Nachos with Queso Blanco...BOMB! The red salsa is the best! Quesadilla of Al Pastor is another great fav! Don't forget the Mexican Coke in Glass bottle or a icy cold Horchata - mmmm!
google avatar

Joelnramoz ..

Yelp
First time here. They got my order wrong. I ordered a all meat burrito, got it WRONG ! I don't think the kid taking orders really knows what people are ordering. Got a burrito with carne asada rice and beans. Rice could be better, beans were dry. Could hardly taste the meat but it seemed ok. Wish I could have got the all meat burrito like I ordered might have tasted better. Oh well, won't be back. At least now I know that the truck at the car wash (just half a block away) is soooo much better. Green hot sauce way really good. It came with radish and lemons.
google avatar

Greg D.

Yelp
Been coming to this Taco Truck for over 15 years. It is incredible! My absolute favorite place for cheap street tacos! Their red sauce on a few carne asada tacos with an ice cold Jarritos - Mandarin is my go-to staple!
google avatar

Noah C.

Yelp
Carnitas tacos with red sauce = taco perfection
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
One of my favorite tacos trucks. Love the tacos and burrito de asada. Been a customer for a long time. Hit this truck late nights on weekends back in the days or when I'm craving asada burrito. Only bad thing to say is burritos getting smaller and pricier. Keeps going that way they gonna lose a long time customer.
google avatar

K X.

Yelp
The first 5 al pastor tacos...culminating in the exquisite 5th...featuring their slightly spicy flavoring...off the charts brilliant! Every award possible for La Estrella. 6th taco forward, quality and desire greatly diminishing as the number accumulates... straight into the heart of despair. Okay, clearly, the blame rests solely on me. Moderation is key, my friend. Eat here in moderation and rejoice!
google avatar

Frank F.

Yelp
This place used to have better quality food, carnitas is way to to dry not enough meat inside the tacos - burritos no words I get it the cost has gone up but come on..... I'll think about coming back.
google avatar

Karlie S.

Yelp
There aren't that many taco trucks in arts district and this is probably the best one. Their meats are decent and they are always super friendly. Their prices are right for the area and it's fast. Flavors are also good and we usually go for their Al Pastor.
google avatar

Yelp
Have lived in Los Angeles my entire life and I have been going to La Estrella for almost 8 years now, I consider it the best burrito in all of east Los Angeles possibly all of Los Angeles. This place is it. You can't find better. It is soo much better than the other non truck La Estrella on Figueroa. Always friendly service, always delicious. I cannot stress enough how much of a die hard fan I am. Bless you La Estrella!
google avatar

Jules N.

Yelp
Delicious. Portion sizes were just right and the food was flavorful and yum. Employees all had well-fitting masks. $1.75 tacos and $8 burritos. Al Pastor was amazing. Cash only.
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
Fantastic tiny taco truck! We had cabeza and asada tacos and a jamaica water - highly recommend giving it a try.

Yelp
After leaving hungry from eating at Uovo in Santa Monica, we decided it was completely necessary to find a taco truck to get us full enough that our stomachs weren't rumbling in the middle of the night. Estrella was located about a minute up from where we were staying in LA for our weekend vacay, so it was perfect for what we wanted. York, in my opinion, seems like a bit of a sketchy street but the area where the truck is located was decently lit so I felt somewhat safe, lol. We ended up getting burritos. The guy was a bit rude but hey, how much customer service can you expect out of a taco truck at 9 pm? Now don't get your hopes up. These aren't super burritos with the works. They just come with meat, beans and rice and maybe some onions, cilantro and salsa. I say "maybe" because Scott asked for no beans on his burrito and literally only got meat and rice. I did have beans on mine, and it made the burrito juicy and I saw onions, cilantro, and maybe salsa inside. These are jam packed with flavor regardless. I loved the flavor of the asada and everything together. So simple and so delicious! Def try it if you're in the area!

Yelp
Just bought a burrito at my favorite place for the past 10 years. And got to say this is the only time over been disappointed the worst burrito I've ever had wrapped. Still tasted really good but just the worst wrap fell apart basically a tortilla on top of the goodness that was suppose to be kept inside. 9/10. The girl always wraps it the best this is the first time I've seen the big dude that wrapped it for me today and gotta say ima order tacos whenever hes around now. Still my favorite place and best tasting but goddamn this guy did not know how to wrap so badly I had to download yelp just to say this.

Yelp
This truck is either a hit or miss. Sometimes it's super delicious or just gross. Sometimes they reheat the meat which obviously tastes bad. But when it's freshly made it's so good. Rice is also hard sometimes so I tend to get tacos instead of burritos. The hot sauce is good though. Today the food was ok.
google avatar

California G.

Yelp
This was ok. We purchased tacos for a group and they were mediocre. Perhaps I missed something, there was nothing extraordinary.
google avatar

Louve S.

Yelp
I've been eating here since I was about 10. Maybe its because the taste has grown on me, or maybe its just that good. Everyone outside of HLP that I have brought to eat here has loved it and had cravings for it so that must say something. The Asada meat is the best here in my opinion, like any other place it varies on cook, but most of the time it is cooked perfect, with a little crisp. The red chili is by far the best Ive tried, its not as hot as king taco, but defiantly has its own flavor and own signature spiciness. Parking isnt to bad usually. Overall a good experience always.

Yelp
Taco trucks!!! YAY! TACO TACO TACO TRUCKS!!! =TACOS= Asada, Carnitas, Lengua, and Pastor. I got 1 of each, and each was absolutely delicious! My only regret...not getting 2 of each! My favorite here was the Pastor, then the Asada and Carnitas. The Lengua wasn't as flavorful as I've had from other taco trucks, so I was slightly disappointed with that...but it was still good. I didn't get extra sauce, as it was $0.25 extra. Nooooo....other trucks have it hanging out for you to take. BUT, even with just the normal amount of sauce, the tacos were still good. =LOCATION & SERVICE= Literally parked on the sidewalk of York Blvd and 54th. The area was a bit sketchy, but the customers and the cooks/cashier in the truck were so nice and friendly. The tacos did take a while to make, but it was average taco truck timing in my opinion. I ordered it "for here", and brought the plate back to my car to eat. (no seats) =FINAL VERDICT= If your'e in the area, starving, and needing a quick bite, you must make it to La Estrella Taco Truck to the rescue!

Yelp
Last night was a big disappointment. I moved away from highland park but I was in the area and brought a friend to try this out because it was really good to me years ago and always was. My friends reaction was not amazed. I think it's because hipsters moved in and increased business/prices. The tacos are $1.40 now. The carne asada meat was very dry and so was the carnitas. The meat tasted as if it sat out too long. The spicy hot sauce made up for it thank goodness! But still, it's not the greatest tacos.
google avatar

Daisy C.

Yelp
My favorite truck for carne asada tacos. The salsa is spicy, but the carne asada is so flavorful that it balances out well. I like to eat my radishes with the salt packet they provide and a bit of lime juice. Bombbbb.

Lisa B.

Yelp
Love this taco truck. Started eating at it in the 90s. We drive from San Francisco to eat there. Best salsa anywhere. I dream about it. Highly recommend. It is my happy place.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
These are my favorite tacos in Los Angeles. Whether at the truck or brick and mortar, everything about Estrella is perfect. The price literally can't be beat ($1.40 per taco?!) and their flavors are so incredible, I always have a hard time choosing just what to get. Found on York Blvd between 53rd and 54th aves, the truck does have a small amount of seating nearby, as well as curbs :). Asada and Pastor are my favorites, followed closely by Pollo and Carnitas. Really there's no going wrong, though. I have yet to venture outside of the taco selections, but I hear great things about the burritos and they always look fantastic. Regardless, don't step away without getting a side each of the red and green salsas. Red is spicier but both add a nice flavorful kick. All tacos come with onion/cilantro and a few slices each of radish and limes. The staff is excellent and very efficient. I've never waited more than 5 minutes for my order to be ready.

Asian B.

Yelp
The service was bad ! They forgot to put salsa dojo on my tacos!? WTF!? And they did not give me extra sauce. This place use to be good, I guess the new owners don't know about service anymore. I will never go there again!
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
If you want the world's best street tacos, look no further. I used to come here all the time when I lived in the area. Haven't been here in about a year or so. Glad they are still here making the best tacos and burritos on York! Their tacos de carnitas(pork) and lengua (beef tongue) are always on point! Their chili hot sauce is always perfect with the amount of heat! Highly recommend this place for your taco cravings whether on Tuesdays or not!
google avatar

Erica H.

Yelp
Pretty good tacos, not the best, but pretty good. Fresh salsas and cilantro. Parking's pretty easy to find in the surrounding area. I usually stick with the carne asada and chicken tacos. Beware of getting extra salsa, they'll actually charge you! I suggest going to the taco stand by the UHaul in Atwater just near the 2 and 5 freeways.
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
Got 2 al pastor & 2 carnitas taco's to go. They looked nothing close to the photos on Yelp. Although they tasted good they were small. When I opened the paper bag I thought they only gave me two in the foil. There was 4. Also I couldn't really tell much difference between the taco's. Maybe should have got the carne instead of one of the two porks. For $1.75 there are better trucks out there.
google avatar

Bae Y.

Yelp
This is not the best taco truck in nela. This ain't even the second best. Or third. Or fourth. This place blows. The girl taking your order has a tude even though the joint was dead. I ordered a Carne Asada burrito. I asked for sauce and she said it's extra. Pro tip... If you're a burrito/taco joint.... competition is fierce in Los Angeles. Sauce always helps make your product better. Especially if you serve dry, starchy trash like the garbage you put out. Throw at least once sauce comped on the house. Trash.
google avatar

Kat T.

Yelp
La Estrella...mmmmmm yummie.. What else can you say about this place but it freakin good tacos. Friendly people and great food. Parking on street. You may have to wait if your going here after clubb'n but other than that. mmmm goodness..
google avatar

Bonnie L.

Yelp
Came by here because we were just looking for some good tacos and we had the Pastore and the Asada they were both really unbelievably delicious and they came packed perfectly will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
They suck now la the truth the tacos and burritos have no taste not only the size wow what a waste of money here never going here again
google avatar

brenda j.

Yelp
These tacos are the bomb carne asada with red salsa yes please I will take 4!! Red Salsa is something else BOMB
google avatar

Jin Y.

Yelp
I come here frequently because it's easy to park, their hours are pretty good, and the food backs it up. I have tasted everything here, which isn't much (limited menu) but they were all fantastic. My fave is the carne asada tacos with the carnitas and cabeza tied for second. I wouldn't drive all the way here to dine if I wasn't from the neighborhood unless I was going to squeeze in a few other trucks. In which case, I def would. Ambiance: Truck is parked parallel to the street on top of a curb so it looks more like a fixed location. The area around here is getting super gentrified (hipster). You can walk into Co-lab gallery next door or the hunt vintage furniture store. Also, there is a taco truck el pique at the car wash in the corner. Might as well!!
google avatar

Marisol M.

Yelp
No truck on a Saturday at 11 am. Tacos are good. Especially the Al Pastor-when they are here. Cash only. Theres a Wells Fargo ATM at the supermarket across the street. Please edit hours to reflectactual hours. Thank you.

Yesenia C.

Yelp
The first time I tried these tacos they were so good!! I have not been here in a while because of the drive I don't live close. I came here today again with a craving for these tacos, the lady was nice took my order I ordered few tacos de asada and they looked good so I go in my car with my food and I as try to pick up one of them it was drenched in oil/grease.!! Took my appetite away, What a huge disappointment this was.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
Love it. For $6 you can get one of the best burritos in LA. My favorite thing here is the pastor burrito. Everything else is good but the pastor is by far the best in my opinion. Cash only!
google avatar

Julie J.

Yelp
I think this place has yummy and saucy al pastor!! The taco was so juicy and yummy.
