Best Tacos in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"While 16th Street gets most of the taco spotlight, 32nd Street is building its own reputation and Tacos Sahuaro is leading the charge. This Sonora-style taquería serves overstuffed tacos that are surprisingly light for their girth. The asada stands out in a city full of competitors — deeply seasoned and grilled to smoky perfection. Tripa is crispy-edged with the right amount of chew, while the birria remains rich without tipping into greasy territory. The fish taco, meanwhile, offers a formidable crunch. Tacos are topped with heaps of homemade pickled vegetables, sliced cucumber, and salsas with measurable heat. While there’s no salsa bar, each table comes with a variety of salsas in squeeze bottles, and the unlimited pickled vegetables provide a tangy, refreshing balance to the heat." - McConnell Quinn

Tacos Sahuaro was a very nice experience. My wife had an asada taco and I had a pork belly taco. We both just had water but the juices looked good as well. Bigger space for a taco spot and had good AC friendly staff. Tacos had good flavor and the salsas had a lot of nice flavor as well. Definitely a great taco if you’re in the area! Will be back.

Google
Hole in the wall taco shop that is legitlegit, and hit my craving. Had the asada and pastor, both were excellent- fresh white onion and crisp cilantro on top on to die for tortillas. Fresh meat (and the asada had that caramelized char that makes the steak next level), phenomenal salsa rojo y verde, the escabeche was to die for, and my favorite on a 110 degree day? The agua frescas. Next time I’m over that way I’ll be there.

Google
Update: We visited again and had their breakfast burrito & more tacos! They’re delicious— as always. So, so good! The inside is also very clean and full of open space, which is great for larger parties! Coming back again, and again! Spacious interior with very friendly staff! The Birria Tacos & Pineapple Agua Fresca was delicious! I’d have it a million times if I could. And for the price you pay, it’s a great deal!

Google
Love this place. Food is good and the music is excellent . I had the combination plate.

Google
Visited based on the glowing recommendation of a local and to be honest was kind of disappointed. I ordered the chorizo tacos and they were pretty flavorless. The agua frescas were really delicious and we found ourselves craving them the next day, especially the cucumber one. The diner was so brightly lit and over-air conditioned. Also make sure you lock the door on the bathroom because I walked in on a guy peeing 👍🏽

Google
I've been wanting to try this place for a very long time and I have to say the food was good but for two quesadillas and two sodas it was 38! My only complaint is they were very skimpy on the meat I would think for that price we should have had more meat to fill our tortillas other than that the staff was very friendly the service was fast the place was very clean and it was all together a great atmosphere

Google
Came here with my wife’s family. They kept hyping up the gorditas and I was not disappointed. The Gorditas and tacos are delicious. Not sure if the tortillas are made by hand but they were very good. Portions were generous to say the least but I only tried asada and pastor. Highly recommend if in the Phoenix are.

Google
So it’s taco Tuesday! and I decided to just randomly find a taco shop in phoenix, I found this place this place. They have a variety of meats to choose from. I decided to get the carne asada, cabeza, chorizo and pastor tacos. I really like that they make the tortillas a slightly crispy. Carne asada was the best one for me. I think Would come back but if I am in the area but Phoenix has lots of good taco shops to choice from.

Yelp
First impression from the outside is to keep driving, BUT DO NOT! This place is cute and clean on the inside. I ordered a carne asada Gordita it was fried to perfection and the ingredients were very fresh. Their bean and cheese burrito was also a delightful well-seasoned choice! Order and pay at the counter and they will bring it to you. Dig a little deeper in your pocket and enjoy their homemade drinks, out of this world!

Yelp
I placed a to-go order while in the area one evening. Although parking is limited at the front, there's more available in the back. We were greeted right away upon entering. The interior is surprisingly spacious and offers plenty of seating. I was happy to see them offer non-meat options like fish other than just veggies or beans. I ordered two fish tacos and one cheese quesadilla, both with corn tortillas for myself as well as a steak burrito for my son. Our items were ready within minutes. My fish tacos were okay, and the sauce and salsa it came with enhanced the flavor. However, the cheese quesadilla was bland and also needed sauce or salsa just to have any sort of flavor. My son said his burrito was "good," but he's easy to please. Their tacos appear to be a favorite among Yelpers, so perhaps I just chose the wrong items.

Yelp
I've had Tacos Sahuaro on my Yelp bucket list and when I found myself near them recently, while it also being Taco Tuesday, it was a sign! The parking is limited, as they're right off 32nd street, but I was able to snag a spot in front and they do offer parking in the back, so something to keep in mind. They were bumping which is a great sign. Their Taco Tuesday special is .50 cents off at the time of review. They offer ample seating inside. You could definitely dine in easily with small or slightly larger groups. I asked the team member what her favorite was and she recommended the quesadilla with carne asada. I got one of those and tried their breakfast burrito, side of refried beans, pastor tacos and horchata. Overall, it was good not great. The taco was definitely the best of what we had and has great flavor. The breakfast burrito was a bit dry and the quesadilla was good but not stand out. I did love the refried beans they offered a perfect consistency. The horchata left a bit to be desired. The green salsa was delicious, but the red didn't do it for me. We did get it all to go and it was sitting in my car for about 30 minutes on my drive home.It was good and did scratch the itch hir want stand out overall. I would definitely visit them again to eat it fresh and probably stick with their tacos this time around.

Yelp
Dined in for the first time! I usually come here during the week and grab lunch to go but I was downtown this weekend and decided to stop in and have lunch. I got my usual, 2 carnitas with cilantro and the green salsa. I LOVE the green salsa. I was so hungry I got a bite in before my picture. I also got a side of rice/beans. I don't know what it is, but their rice & beans are sooo good! I also got their strawberry lemonade Agua Fresca, it was soo yummy!!! The ladies that helped me are always so friendly! They made sure they brought everything we needed at our table. There were quite a few other people/families eating and it was so nice seeing everyone enjoying their food. Just a great experience eating inside. They definitely make sure they keep the area and tables clean. I will always recommend this place for their food and now that I've had the full experience, I enjoy it so much more. Definitely give them a visit if you're reading this and have never been.

Yelp
Friends, the food here is great!!! Super authentic and fresh. The Gorditas are just like mom's and the the carne asada is super tasty. The carne asada quesadilla is fantastic. The service is super fast and the team here super helpful and friendly!!! A++ rating in my book. The pictures speak for themselves.

Yelp
Tacos Sahuaro serves up some tasty bona fide Mexican food. When you arrive at the restaurant, you'll find an unassuming little strip mall with limited parking. (More limited parking is available if you pull around the building.) When you walk in, you'll be greeted by the sounds of Mexican folk music and a big dining room large enough to accommodate a couple more tables than already exist. The service is fast and friendly. One employee was quick to take my order and another dropped off a variety of hot sauces at the table without even being asked. You probably won't wait long for food to arrive. If you do, you can pass the time by watching one of their two TVs (only one was working on my visit) or by taking a selfie at a dedicated Selfie Wall. I ordered three tacos; one each of Birria, Asada and Carnitas. (Consommé not included.). All were served hot, though the meats were a little dry. The tortillas were light and fresh. Cucumber, lemon and carrot garnishes were a nice touch. They also offer an extensive selection of drinks. Overall, Taco Sahuaro is a good value. At $3.25 each taco, I think it's worth the price.

Yelp
Stopped by this place for lunch with a few of our friends. We were welcomed with a warm smile and great smelling food being prepared. We ordered different varieties of tacos from tripas, chorizo, carne asada, and carnitas. All were very flavorful and the tortillas were made fresh. They also had a great flavors of agua Frescas. The mint & cucumber was my go to but also liked the cantaloupe. We actually came back the next day and ordered Togo so we can enjoy it by the pool at our airbnb

Yelp
Service was good. People were nice and efficient. The photo wall was very cute. The tacos are delicious. The tortillas were my favorite on our self/guided taco tour through Phoenix

Yelp
I can't believe how delicious it is!! Speechless!! I'm not exaggerating but it's so delicious. Only downside is no beer and I don't live here. Love it !!

Yelp
I finally found a taco shop worth telling everyone about! I always say, "why can't anyone seem to season their meats?" Well, Taco Sahuaro not only seasons their meats, but they crisp their pork and slow cook their beef. Wow! What a great find! The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was very clean. I would highly recommend the carnitas taco and the birria taco. The gordita looked amazing, can't wait to give it a try!

Yelp
Was craving someone Mexican food and this place came across my feed so decided to stop by. This has to be my new fave mexican spot! I got the Gordita and on my was it soo good! The tacos were good too but not as good as the Gordita. Coming back to try their other top items which are the tostadas and the menudo. People here are really sweet and love a place that you can just order and then sit down!
google avatar

Yelp
Surprisingly spacious "hole-in-the-wall" Mexican offering good eats at humble prices! Tried five different types of tacos - pastor, pescado, carnitas, carne asada, and birria - and while portions are on the smaller side, would happily reorder any and all again. Appreciated the down-home flavors and efficient counter-to-table service, but this place would be even better with the addition of a self-serve salsa bar... (hint hint ;)

Yelp
A hole in the wall, yet very clean and very tasty tacos. We had carnitas, carne asada, chorizo and fish. All were very good and the handmade corn tortillas were light and not crumbly the way the purchased ones can be. The food took a little while to come out which is a good sign as it was fresh. The also brought out freshly sliced cucumbers and pickled carrots and jalapeños. Two sauces in squeeze bottles added to the bright flavors, a lighter jalapeño sauce and an orange color fiery one. They have the menu on a digital display and it also rotated pictures of menu items in the lower right corner which made us want to try the flour tortilla quesadillas and the beef birria. We noticed they have chilies relleno too which we hope to try in the future.

Yelp
Maybe the best tacos I have had in Phoenix. Perfect. Run, don't walk. Tortillas were delicious. Carne was impeccable. Salsa was delectable. Service was fast and friendly. Vibe was very Mexican but I ordered mostly in English with no issue. A lot of people look for "authentic" Mexican food and I am of the opinion that Mexican food varies greatly depending on what region of Mexico. I spent a lot of my youth in Tamaulipas. And that is what these tacos remind me of. Very small chunks of beef cooked well done or charred. Meat is trimmed and cooked perfect. No fat or chewy pieces. Yes it is cooked well done, which is exactly how they did it in Mexico my entire youth. If you want a rare ribeye, this isn't it. If you want amazing street tacos reminiscent of absolutely authentic Mexican street food, look no further. Taco boys was previously my fave in the area. Sahuaro is a solid 10-15 minute drive away from me but definitely beats taco boys. Looking forward to showing some friends.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've been here only cause I changed jobs but OMG still just as I remember it!!! Some of the same girls still work here... Highly recommend you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Rohini G.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall place. Tried 3 tacos (pescado, tripa, and birria). Never tried tripa before and the bits were smoky and slightly chewy. The sauces had good heat to them as well. The pickled veggies and lime were also nice additions. I also tried the cucumber and chia drink which was delicious, refreshing, and not overly sweet.
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
I know there's been discussion about Tacos Sahuaro vs Tacos Huicho. Well, i tried the former for lunch and the latter for dinner in one day to be able to compare accurately. I have to say that Sahuaro wins by miles. First of all, the tacos are much bigger. Second, the meat is higher quality. Third, the tortillas have more taste and texture. Fourth, the service was much better. Last, they give you complimentary pickled vegetables. I got the carne asada, pastor, tripa, and lengua. My favorites were the asada and pastor!
google avatar

Leticia V.

Yelp
The best Taco spot in central Phoenix. Happed to come across it years ago and had forgotten where it was, and just a a few months agitation my BFF says "I'm going to take you to my favorite taco spot" and low and behold it was the spot I had lost. Super happy to have found it again. Saved now forever in my Yelp Phx favorites
google avatar

Tiffiny S.

Yelp
Amazing service & even better food. We got the asada tacos, carnitas tacos & sopes with a side of beans & rice. To top it off we had a strawberry lemonade. All the food is fresh & the drank was thirst quenching. It's so good we drove 30 mins to grab food at 8 at night (when there are plenty of options around us). If that doesn't say how much we like this place, I don't know what does! Enjoy. You won't be disa

Yelp
Really good carnitas and al pastor. The horchata wasn't all too flavorful. The service was good and the food was always served quickly.

Yelp
Driving this sign catches my eye, I look at the reviews and call the place. They have tortillas hecha a mano, not many places do! This is the first in the area that I have eaten at and it delivered! Experience: very nice customer service with a smile and very helpful. Food was so delicious, not sure if anyone can beat it in the area. Health scores are solid A's for many years and for the last 5 years in a row. Great options for yummy drinks.

Yelp
Mom and pop taco shop with home cooked taste. Spacious indoor dining area. Friendly staff. Tacos were very good. Missed having a salsa bar though.

Yelp
Fast service great authentic Mexican food Good horchata! Reasonably priced. Nothing fancy but that's ok it's clean!
google avatar

Yelp
Taco Sahuaro is really good! They take pride in their food, they're always super busy! The food was a tad bit salty on my last visit but they're usually way better than that! I will always recommend!
google avatar

Kimberly A.

Yelp
Best breakfast burritos in town. Heard about this place from a few friends who rave about it. Hole in the wall, nothing fancy, but I would drive 20 min past 50 other Mexican places for their burritos. They serve it with spicy veggies on the side which are delicious and all their Mexican juices are homemade, refreshing and delicious too! Only ordered take out but the service is always great too!
google avatar

Brent S.

Yelp
Delicious food and fast, friendly service. We will definitely be back soon! I had a steak breakfast burrito & she had a quesadilla . So good.

Yelp
This place is the epitome of what makes AZ the Capital of Mexican food in the Southwest USA.! True flavors and great customer service. People are super nice and friendly.

Yelp
I can never get enough of good street tacos. We are so spoiled to have so many great places to get tacos here in the Valley. If you want to find Tacos Sahuaro, just look for the colorful painted building on 32nd street in Phoenix. These guys have been making good Mexican food for over a decade. Tacos Sahuaro is counter-service and has a large menu on the wall as you walk in. As you are ordering, you can't help but notice the large aguas frescas containers on the counter. They have melon cantaloupe, pineapple, horchata and cucumber-chia as their flavors. Tacos Sahuaro is family-owned and they use recipes that have been passed down in their family. They have several meat options to choose from like carne asada, al pastor, chicken, and chicharrón. They also make their gorditas, sopes, and quesadillas by hand. When I came here, I ordered tacos and a mini quesadilla stuffed with carne asada. The carne asada is fantastic! I love that they chop their meat up so fine. I also like that they stuff their tacos with lots of onion and cilantro. So much flavor! One of these times I need to try their chicharrón tacos. I hear they are nice and tender and have a little kick to them. I noticed they had a tv on in the corner that was playing telenovela when I was waiting for my food. I travel to Mexico quite often and felt like I was chilling in Puerto Peñasco eating some good eats. Tacos Sahuaro is a great option if you are craving some authentic Mexican food on a random night. You'll be supporting a great local business that makes good food.

Yelp
I have been coming to this taco Gem for over 5 years and favor is still the same in the food and fresh water drinks. There been increase in pricing like anything else in today life. Customer service is always great and fast. Try the tacos , gorditas, tortas, and agua de pepino for sure !! I love there homemade salsa they all go perfect with the food. Check them out
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
Best taco place I've been to in a long time. My fave is their carne tostada and their beans I need to try their birria when they make it I always seem to miss it!
google avatar

Austin E.

Yelp
This place is the definition of authentic Mexican food. These tacos are exactly what you are looking for. Each taco is less than $3 a taco and even cheaper on Taco Tuesday. It is served with a plate of vegetables that allows you to customize what else you want on it besides meat, cilantro, and onions. Their salsa verde and anaranjado complement the taco greatly. I highly recommend this place. It is a great authentic restaurant with quick service.
google avatar

Rae T.

Yelp
Still love this place. They're clean and friendly. They consistently deliver delicious authentic Mexican food every single time. Everything we've tried has been phenomenal. My favorites are still the carne asada Gorditas and the aguas frescas. They serve menudo in the weekends and it's a must try!!
google avatar

Mate S.

Yelp
Phenomenal food. Tried three tacos to start with. Inhaled them and immediately ordered two more. No gristle or fat, just meat. Will eat here as many times as I'm in the area and highly recommend to anyone else who might be reading this.

Yelp
I'm fairly new to Phoenix and wanted to find some real deal Mexican tacos and Tacos Sahuaro knocked it out of the park! First off I love the exterior of building which sets the tone for authenticity which continues inside. There are 7 or 8 different tacos to choose from as well as a few other dishes. However, I came for tacos which did not disappoint. I had 2 chicken tacos and one fish taco. All the meats were perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection in warm, grilled tortillas. They have some fantastic red and green sauces on the table, both packed with the right amount of heat and flavor. Service is excellent and comes with a big bright smile. Will I be back? You betcha! Yelp
Visiting the area and had tacos from Tacos Sahuaro based on Yelp reviews. And they did not disappoint. Food was authentic street tacos with their rice and beans being flavorful with a little heat. The place is easy to overlook but I really enjoyed the food and the service. Would def be back

Yelp
Fantastic carne asada tacos and breakfast burritos. Very clean inside and the staff is friendly. Looks sketch from the outside but it is not once you walk In. Can't go wrong with their quesadillas either.
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
The best in the valley for carne asada tacos. Super nice staff. Excellent burritos. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jordan G.

Yelp
Had dinner here. Ordered a menudo and some tacos. Enjoyable but not my favorite place in Phoenix. Jordan
google avatar

Ira F.

Yelp
arguably the best tacos in Phoenix and maybe all of Arizona. Been here on many occasions and never disappointed. tortillas made to order, thick as pancakes. food and service always exceed expectations.
google avatar

Mai Y.

Yelp
Love this little gem. The staff is very friendly as they greet you at the counter where the order is placed. They serve courtesy pickled carrots, fresh cucumbers, and pickled onions instead of chips and salsa which is a unique twist. Very refreshing and healthy. Their tacos are amazing. My partner loves their corn tortillas that are served along with the Chile relleno. He commented that they are the best he's ever had and they indeed must be freshly made, moist, and thick. Great place at a modest price. Highly recommend. Only drawback is they do not offer alcohol. A beer would be a nice addition.
google avatar

Pedro P.

Yelp
I COULD NOT. STOP. EATING. Went back to order two more times. First I had the four tacos; cabeza, tripa, birria and lengua. My girlfriend had three; asada, pastor and chorizo. They were all incredible. While I was still eating, my girlfriend had finished and wanted me to order the quesadilla. Finished my four tacos and couldn't help but go back and order three more; lengua, cabeza and buche. I'd say my favorite items were the lengua, cabeza and pastor. Tripa taco was a runner up for a favorite it but I prefer the tripitas a little crispy. Everything phenomenal. The only thing this place is missing is MICHELADAS.
google avatar

Kassi G.

Yelp
This is reallyy good Mexican food. I will definitely be coming back. The tacos are really good. I preferred The tacos to the quesadillas. Their pastor tacos are dellicious and so are the carne asada. The sauces are good as well. The mini quesadilla was falling apart a bit which made it hard to eat. There's lots of space. The tacos are $2.50 a pop. They give you pickled vegetables and cucumbers with your meal which we really enjoyed.
