Alameda Gets a Superhero-Themed, Mexico City-Style Taco Truck on the West End | Eater SF

"I welcomed the arrival of a superhero‑themed taco truck parked three days a week at 800 West Tower Avenue behind Bladium Sports and Fitness Club on the West End of Alameda: Tacos Super Monilla, the first taco truck to establish a regular presence on the island beyond occasional pop-ups. Owners Ramon and Silvia Torres, originally from Mexico City, have turned their family catering business (Tacos Torres) into a full family affair — Ramon, with 50 years in the food industry and a signature Salt Bae–like salsa and cilantro flourish, is even depicted on the bright blue truck as a superhero holding a taco. The Mexico City–style tacos are really, really good: the menu features carne asada, grilled chicken and, notably, al pastor cooked on a trompo (the only spot in Alameda and one of only a handful in the East Bay to have one), plus chorizo, buche, tripa, tongue and one of the best versions of suadero around. They also bring regional Mexico City fare like tortas and the campechano (made here with suadero and chorizo), offer a Torres family “Mexican burger,” steak fries topped with meat, avocado, cheese and sour cream, and even a kids’ menu suited to the truck’s location behind Bladium. The truck is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 10:30 p.m. and Mondays from 6 to 11 p.m.; the family plans to expand to six days a week between Alameda and Oakland in 2020, they’ve added quesabirrias on Sundays, and will soon sell beef birria as a separate dish." - Azucena Rasilla
