18 Excellent Houston Taquerias

"Located in South Houston on the northbound feeder in between Monroe Blvd and Howard Drive, this taco spot is essential if flying in or out of Hobby Airport. The tortillas are dipped in oil and then slapped on the plancha, adding a taste that is reminiscent of the tacos devoured in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. You really can’t go wrong with the bistec or trompo, but they also offer excellent tripa, picadillo, and chicharron. Distinct in flavor, the tacos Tlaquepaque, filled with de deshebrada, are bathed in a dark brown salsa." - Brittany Britto Garley

Went to this taco place pretty late on a weekday and was glad to eat this instead of fast food. The tacos were pretty good and fresh. Sauces came prepackaged and convenient for takeout. The place may put some off as it may seem like a seedy neighborhood with bars all over the windows, and there was a homeless change begging psychopath lurking around the parking lot but the place is clean and there is plenty of seating inside. And the psychopath seemed pretty harmless. The people seem to care about the quality of the food and there is a pretty good crowd coming in and out of the place so it must be ok. Watch out for the tacos al pastor though, they are delicious but will burn a hole right through your body! 😆 Still ate all of them! I’ll return whenever I am near Hobby Airport.

I liked the the food and the portions are very generous. What I did not like is the ordering system they have; A waitress will not approach you, you have to order at the counter. Everything is a la carte, only aguas frescas are on fountain, soft drinks are on bottles and cans. I find this system more appropriate for a taco truck than for a restaurant. Once you place your order, you then go find a table ,no hostess, and wait for a "waitress" (if she can be called a waitress, as no waiting of tables is taking place here,) to bring your food and your bottled drink, and you will be waiting a while, seems that the kitchen is understaffed. No complementary chips here. The place is located in a somewhat rundown strip mall, and there is not much parking. The interior of the restaurant is also run down and unkempt, it is not dirty, but there are boxes and crates of empty bottles in the dining room. I found the music to be too loud and not in keeping with the "Monterrey" motif. I would conclude by saying this place is take out only. Monterrey style competitors do a better job for those that prefer to dine in.

Been in town for work the last 2 weeks and stopped here. The service was fantastic and the food was wonderful. Music is good and not too loud. So great I had to go back which is where I'm typing this from and I've already decided before I leave I'm going again and this will be my last meal so I can savor it.

Google
This has been pne of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to. The food is k good and the quesadillas here are the best!

Google
Really good tacos to try if you are in the area. I specially liked the trompo, it was very flavorful. The steak I feel was missing something. The tortilla could be less oily. Loved that they add the onion and cilantro on the side, and the green salsa was really good, just the right amount of spice for me. I also ordered the charro beans and found them a bit bland, however my friend ordered the charro beans with meat and she really liked them. Overall, I’d come back if am close by.

Google
Late night location with late night type customers. Not a deal breaker for me though. Great food. Reasonable prices. Plenty of seating; bigger inside than what it looks like from outside.

Google
Tacos are good very authentic. I'd recommend stopping and having a taste of Monterrey..

Google
We have been waiting for them to open for at least a month, and finally came to enjoy delicious food. They did not disappoint. It was amazingly tasty. However, they push customers to pay for bottled water. There should be a tap water option.

Yelp
This place is top-down freaking awesome. All of the menu items are great! Whatever salsa they serve with the Tacos Tlaquepaque is entirely addictive and served in great enough volume, that you can take it home with you and put on literally anything you eat to give it that next-level "mmmph!". Just don't spread the word tooooo much, so the lines don't go around the block, ok?
google avatar

Yelp
Listen food was really good. I went to the restaurant to order some tacos. They charged me A CONVENIENCE FEE! On top of sales tax. What is the meaning of this? I never heard of this
google avatar

Yelp
The only reason this restaurant doesn't get five stars and Seven Stars if I could give Seven Stars is because of the difficulty in ordering. The problem with ordering is that no one in the restaurant speaks English and it's that much more difficult just to place an order but other than that you should try their food.

Yelp
Late Sunday night; most places had already closed but Tacos Tec was lit up to see from the street. I ordered a Taco plate with grilled onions and no cilantro with a Pina aqua. Was going to grab and go but decided to eat here. After getting your order taken at the counter, you wait to hear your name; dine in or take out. For dine in, they bring the food to your table. I wasn't expecting a potato on my plate but it was, just needed a little seasoning. Everything was great from the tacos to the drink; even the potato. It was kinda crowded, lots of families with their kids. I would definitely go back. Adding to my bookmarks!

Yelp
Omg I think I found my new Taco place!..t Took my son after fitting and he loved it too. Meat was flavorful and filling.

Yelp
Mi Favoritos son los "Taco de Vapor de Chicharron"!!! Sabrosisimos!! Con La salasas de Roja y Verde! Con los surtido a parte! Me recuerdan con los "Tacos de Vapor estilo Monterrey!! Me crei con ellos desde chuiquita!! My Favorites are their "Tacos de Vapor...Tacos of Steam of Chicharron"!! I was raised as a little kid by the border of Mexico and had cousins that lived in Monterrey Mx!!" Brings me back memories.. wonderful memories and comfort food"!! I live about over an Hour away from this Taco Tec Paradise!! And I specifically go just to eat their "Tacos de Vapor style/estilo Monterrey Mx"!! Well worth it!! En Mi Opinion Vale La Pena por seguro! Well worth it!! I wish there would be a location in my neck of the woods! But still I travel over an hour to that location!!

Yelp
My second time here but I already love it. Literally the best tacos I've had since moving to Houston.
google avatar

Ruben A.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by a good friend from Mexico. It has a family owned feel, very welcoming and warm. The food and service is top notch. These are hands down the best tacos in all of Texas. Love their variety of salsas. And taco options. This is a must try!
google avatar

Brisa M.

Yelp
My favorite tacos de trompo in Houston. The waiting staff and cashiers are always super friendly and charismatic. The atmosphere in the restaurant is super nice and there's always a soccer game on. Quality food for a good price. I'll keep coming back for my tacos!!!
google avatar

Karla G.

Yelp
Delicious! Had regular tacos and tried chicharron, bistec, trompo & dezebrada meat and they were all really good the presentation of the plate was great too with a lime @ small potatoes. Definitely had the Monterrey sazon. Great service everyone had good attitudes and they were very quick with our order. The place is big and clean very comfortable Loved it can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Love the food here you will not be disappointed! Everyone on the menu is good my favorite are the captichos or papa asada!

Maggie S.

Yelp
We walked in and sat for about 15 minutes, no one had the courtesy to tell us you had to order upfront! Keep in mind a waitress and buss boy saw us take a seat. We drove two business Dow and are enjoying our food at MARIA-RITAS!

Yelp
Baby I don't understand why we just can't have bites of each others' tacos Baby it's all I know, that I want half of the meat and the maiz in your tacos So Tacos Tec... these broken wings And learn to fry again, learn to get so fat When we taste... the soaked-in lard Giving up Autentica Cocina is so damn hard Tacos Tec... these broken winggggggggssssss...... Tec a leaf out of my book and try a bunch of authentic Mexican places when you are in Houston because it honestly has the best Mexican food I've ever had. This place is not right at the top of the list but it is still pretty good and is extremely cheap and open late and those things are exactly what you want in a taqueria on the way back from Galveston right off the highway. For my best of the best, go to Bala on Bellaire and get Cochinita Pibil, and try Mole at Regia on Long Point. Now speaking of Long Points (pulls down pants).

Yelp
Probably my favorite place to get Mexican food in Houston. It's so authentic that it's even cash only!! Their tacos are a bit pricey & small (although that's how small real tacos are), but they're delicious. I recommend their tacos al pastor. Their tortas are delicious as well, plenty toppings, plenty of meat, good fresh bun. Their green sauce is probably the best green sauce I've ever had. The location is kind of inconvenient for me as I don't live in the area, but it's worth the drive. My only ripe is the place doesn't look TOO clean & they mostly only speak spanish, which isn't an issue for me but it can be for non spanish speakers. Quick story: one time I went and there were a few people fighting outside, some girl even had a baby in her arms and was throwing hands, LOL!!!! This place is very authentic and delicious, I'd recommend it. Just make sure you bring cash cause their ATM fees are high!!

Yelp
I ordered their Bistec Tacos togo and they were fantastic in every way. These steak tacos were very delicious, well seasoned, not too salty, juicy and had moist tasty corn tortillas to hold the rest. These tacos are the best tacos I have had and are very authentic too. According to some Mexicans I have met and a couple at my mom's workplace, these are closest to Monterrey style. I was very pleased with the food this time and last time when I got the chicken quesadilla and chicken flautas on my last visit, which was also my first time ever trying Tacos Tec. Along with the delicious food here, their prices, portion sizes and late hours of operation are great as well. I am also a huge chicken enchilada fan and want to try their chicken enchiladas on my next visit. I have never been to Monterrey, but having already tried several Mexican cafes in Houston over the years, I can see how these stand out and are the real deal like over there. Some places aren't as accurate, prepared or as good, but this place makes awesome Mexican food. The only places for tacos I have really really liked down here are Tacos Tec, Krave Tacos and a taco truck on Telephone Rd I had gone to 9-10 years ago. I still say Tacos Tec is my favorite of the three and a must try for steak tacos, chicken quesadillas and flautas. I still need to try their chicken enchiladas and shrimp tacos in the future. I also love the spicy green and red cream sauces, cilantro and roasted potatoes that come with the orders here. The Mexican food is really made with love at this establishment.

Jesus A.

Yelp
Amazing food, service, and ambiance! I ordered the baked potato and it was great I really recommend it.

Anne M.

Yelp
Food is delicious BUT too, too greasy We ordered a variety of tacos and the plates were saturated with grease. Not worth the drive.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Popped in to order two simple breakfast tacos (bean and cheese, potato egg and cheese on corn). Waited 20-30 minutes and finally got my order. Only to find one taco in my bag that was not even correct (potato egg on flour). Went back in to fix it and they AGAIN messed it up: potato egg cheese on flour, bean and egg. Finally got the bean and egg fixed and left. It's now bean and queso fresco (what?!) and the potato one is still on flour. I gave up. Almost 40 minutes was ridiculous and now I'm late for a family event.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't left a review for this place yet but it's our favorite taco spot (we haven't found any top contenders as of yet compared to this place). They only take cash and it's not in a nice area, persay but totally safe. They speak (mostly) Spanish when ordering but will understand some English. My husband and I get their trompo tacos on flour tortilla which comes with a green and red sauce I believe. The meat is packed with flavor- it leaves you wanting more! The sauces pair well with the meat. There is plenty of seating inside but they also allow take-out. This place is so worth checking out- it won't disappoint!
google avatar

Daniel V.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Like having grandmas tacos. It's like your in Mexico having authentic food. I have tried the tacos with thrompo and I strongly recommend. The salsas they bring out are very tasty. The red one is the spicy one but the green is my favorite. They also have these tacos cooked with water vapor and they are yummy but not filling so I suggest getting it with another dish. The chicken tortas were good and so was the quesadilla with chichoron. Oh and the tortillas are homemade!
google avatar

Jose G.

Yelp
It's ok...not much else to say. The food? Ok Service? Ok price? Ok parking? Sucks, bunch of people that don't know how to drive.

Michelle D.

Yelp
So. Good. Right outside Houston Hobby. We want more. Horchata not too sweet. Tacos great. Tostada a lil different but great. Enchiladas nut bueno!
google avatar

Liz I.

Yelp
The tacos were excellent!!! I felt like I was in Monterrey again, except it still smelled like Houston air. This is really great food, the flavors made me happy. I also ordered una Hamburguesa Norteña, but they gave me the Bisteck Burger, really don't care which one I got, but man, I barely finish half the burger. Next time will try the Hamburguesa Norteña or maybe the Hawaiiana. The place inside was huge! I also grabbed a bag of empanadas de cajeta, which were superb! Cash only! Great Tacos!
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
They only accept cash you cannot use a credit card. Bugs everywhere. I saw roaches, ants and a bunch of flies my last visit. No a/c last time I was there. The tacos took 30 to 40 minutes and they only had 4 tables. This place had started off okay but has gone down. Leadership and training is obviously lacking here.
google avatar

Navii A.

Yelp
The food is great & the price is a bargain (cash only) The only problem I have is that I'll want to eat this again. This is my second visit after coming with friends/family the first & it's still great! PS* they have an ATM for your convenience.

Yelp
Jason's Texas Trip #4 of 7: Written from a SoCal point of view I am happy to say that THIS place was my favorite of the 7 restaurants I ate at during my getaway from the Los Angeles area to Houston/Sugar Land. Great hole in a wall joint with an authentic feel when it comes to seating environment and food. Cash only. Staff was nice. Came here on a Friday past lunch time so there was no wait at all. The cashier was friendly and nice, as well as patient with my brother and myself being first timers. I had the taco plate, came with 5 of them with everything on it. Just thinking about that place is currently make my mouth water as I write about it. I could taste the difference in taste and texture compared to a Mexican taco from CA. The way the grease was absored into the tortilla, the cheese on the meat, the generous amount of onion and other veggies was defintely a mouth orgasm waiting to happen. The al pastor had a different (dare I say better) taste than what I'm normally used to. I will definitely come back here when I visit Texas again. The only thing stopping me from eating more than 5 tacos this day was that I was looking to try out more eateries during my stay in town. And also because I'm a fatass. Minor mishap though when my friend went back up to order another plate for 3 of us to share. About 15 minutes later, we noticed other customers that ordered after us were getting their food and it looked like they forgot about my friend's. We couldn't wait any longer and staff was nice enough to refund that specifc order.

Yelp
Authentic tacos and plates Monterrey Mexico Style. The food is so delicious and has different combinations then others. I like to start with the Frijoles Preparrados and then go to town on any menu item. It's all so good
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
This place is delicious, authentic, and cheap. Can't beat that combination. I always order Barbacoa, bisteck, and trompo tacos on corn. My friend ordered a trompo torta and said it was delicious as well.
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
This place is delicious! The closest thing to the way tacos taste in Mexico. The employees have always been very kind as well. Definitely love supporting this local business and I drive far when I'm craving authentic Mexican tacos to come here. Check them out if you've been considering it!
google avatar

Tee L.

Yelp
Tacos are great!!! Must try the preparados beans!!! Great place to go after the club.
google avatar

Dustin P.

Yelp
Delicious!!! True, authentic flavors. Very nice employees. We will be back. The frijoles preparandos was the best I literally drank the juice from the cup. Gorditas were delicious.

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this place!!! The tacos are delicious! Would recommend any day. My go to spot on late nights.
google avatar

Nathaniel H.

Yelp
GOOD SHIT. Real authentic Mexican food unlike that overpriced Tex Mex crap next block over where they screw you with the portions, prices, and service. Food is greasy the Mexican way and hey you do hear the occassional, "Hey pinche guey! Que queres cabron?" Do consider that this place is near the hood (I saw some local gangbangers), so be prepared to strap your Glock even though that place has a Kumbaya sign (gun free zone).
google avatar

AJ H.

Yelp
I heard so many good things about this not disappointed. Everything on the men text me the most was the chicken was season really well. You can't go wrong no matter what you order but I strongly recommend the carne asada tacos chicken tostada
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
I tried they're tacos and we'll they were okay. I've had better. but they are ok. the frijoles a la charra were not good. I would have expected more flavor. the restaurant was so hot inside that I could not eat there. I was too uncomfortable. I am a huge taco lover and I am always in search for tasty tacos and these just didn't do it for me
google avatar

Elena V.

Yelp
I normally have a decent experience here but not today. I called them three times to place an order for carry out. The first time they answered they put me on hold and I could hear them talking to other customers. The second time I called they picked up the phone and put me on hold without as much as a word. The third time they didn't bother to answer. I decided to spend my money elsewhere. The service normally isn't good but I ignore it because they definitely make up for it with the food but this place needs to work on their customer service skills. That applies to them pre COVID.
google avatar

Cynthia J.

Yelp
Very authentic Mexican tacos! The tacos are really full of flavor! Costumer service was great felt so welcomed! Definitely returning back!
google avatar

Ralph G.

Yelp
I've never had a bad experience here! This is about the closest you can get to a Monterey style taqueria without actually going to Monterey. They take cash and card and the staff is friendly and prompt.
google avatar

N S.

Yelp
Tacos al vapor! These tacos are soooooo delicious. Typically available to order before 2pm. Love than they have Mexican drinks. Joya toronja or manzana are my favorite. Highly recommend. Restrooms not so clean, but I went for the tacos anyway.
google avatar

Ryan A.

Yelp
Great little authentic mom and pop type Mexican restaurant. They do a style of food that's typical of Northern Mexico. It is not fancy, but they are friendly. Order at the counter and they bring to your table. No beer or liquor, just food only. Weirdly one of the best items are their "crispy tacos ", which are familiar in name only as typical Americanized crispy tacos would have ground beef, these come filled with fajita meat and avocado. Very tasty and unique. The two salsas they bring to the table a green and a red, perfectly spicy, not too much nor too little. The red is a Chile de arbol in the style of "salsa frita" if you're familiar with Sonoran style taquerias. The green is the jalapeño based creamy style that always is served at taquerias, the salsa alone is worth the trip! The also serve suadero tacos, which are hard to find in Houston. Great hole in the wall type place, give them a try.
google avatar

Alliyah A.

Yelp
I ordered the tacos dorados, 2 fajita tacos, 1 Gordita and 2 Mexican cokes and my total was 25.00. The meat had no flavor and was dry. There is nothing special about this place

Dennis S.

Yelp
Not sure if the tacos are any good but I can assure you that the burgers are crap. If you want a burger you can pick up and take a bite out of I suggest you not come to this place. You can't pick up the burger without getting your hands covered in sauce. After the first bite everything started to come apart. By the third bite the patty was on my plate not in between the buns. Mind you I cut the burger in half just to get those 3 bites. If you like slop on a plate this is the place for you. Sad thing is that the food smell doesn't even over power the stank in that place. If I could give this place half a star I'd give them that.
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
Tacos are always a hit or miss... This place is a hit. They had a taco truck that actually still operates in the same parking lot! This place is open late so drunkards welcome! Normal taco stand favorites... Tacos, Torres, flautas and more. They also serve menudo... A must try are the charro beans fully loaded... Comes topped with cheese, meats and stuff. FYI this is a cash only establishment! So be prepared also there is no ATM on site but there is a chase bank like a block away.
google avatar

Shelbie J.

Yelp
Came here for lunch while on a work trip and all I have to say is WOW! I got two chorizo tacos and my companions both got tacos and gorditas. The food here is EVERYTHING. Simple, yet full of flavor. The salsas here are also super flavorful and very spicy, just how I like. This is a cash only spot, but there is an ATM inside. Once you order at the counter they call your name and bring your food out to you when it's ready. Food was prepared very quickly. When we were on the way out we stopped at the register to look at the cookies and one the employees let us try a sample. Those were great too so of course we left with some. The service here was great, everyone was very friendly and patient and the food was amazing. This is a must do stop while in town.
google avatar

Humberto A.

Yelp
This place really makes me not miss my Mty Mx that much... it can get pretty busy late at night but the taquitos are so worth it... if you like cheese in your tacos i would recommend you ask for some caprichos regios... you can get them either beef or pork also the charro beans are great and dont forget to pair it with a "joya de manzana or mexican coke" Enjoy
google avatar

Liv G.

Yelp
By far my favorite tacos in Houston. Everytime I eat these tacos I feel like I'm eating tacos in Mexico. I like the Caprichos its basically tacos with cheese. Ive also tried a torta and flautas but their not anything special. I wouldn't get again.
google avatar

Gilberto G.

Yelp
Every time I come here I order the same thing. Always satisfied! I get flour tortilla tacos with pulled beef (desebrada) with cut up slices of cabbage and diced tomatoes. Finishing it off with a squeeze of lime juice and some green salsa. Now that there's an actual diner to eat in, it's even better! Highly recommend this place! -Gilberto Galaviz Jr

Lydia S.

Yelp
Loved the Fajita Caprichos ,and Tacos dorados With Frijoles charros preparados, the Tortas and quesadillas are very good aswell
google avatar

Jorge C.

Yelp
This was our go to spot for some late night tacos. But during our last visit we saw a couple of roaches just walking around the to go window right where they keep the frijoles charros. The food is great and the prices are great but not to the point where the cleanliness should be over looked. This place is heading in the wrong direction pretty quick. Whoever is running this place needs to go in and give that place a good cleaning inside and out. No way roaches should just be strolling near food that is going to be served that night! Eat at your own risk!
google avatar

Jaime G.

Yelp
Open late and great! Leticia was so nice she gave us extra to try. We will defiantly be back.
