Montreal’s Best Restaurants for Gluten-Free Eaters | Eater Montreal

"Corn tortillas and gluten-free diets are a match made in heaven, perhaps nowhere more so in Montreal than at Tacos Victor, where the entire menu of fry-topped tacos and other Mexican sides is fully free of gluten. Victor’s cornmeal tacos are served with classic fillings like steak, chorizo, shrimp, and veggies, and can be ordered through several third-party apps." - Holly Tousignant

Pretty good place tacos were ok. Food is not always warm. Tried the (chorizo (minced) and steak) as well as the steak only taco they’re not bad. Not great! The steak one in both cases had gristle fatty pieces, **not very tasty and kind of ruined the experience A coke can is 4.00$ is that normal?

Google
I really appreciate this place. Their food makes me feel like home. Knowing that nothing will be like eating Mexican food in Mexico, this place definitely helps me feel less homesick 💚🤍❤️ Great music, really yummy salsas and tacos 🌮 I love taco boxes, especially with nopales on the side.

Very good tacos place, service was very good. Staff is friendly. Very nice spot for a little date night. Amazing sauces. They dont cheap out on the limes.

Terrace season is finally here in Montreal and we’re kicking it off right at Tacos Victor. Fresh guacamole is creamy and fresh, served with perfectly crispy homemade corn chips and a bright ceviche, with tender fish and shrimp marinated in lime juice, cilantro, and onions. All sunshine-approved! 🌮☀️

My boyfriend and I decided to eat there because of the ambience and terrace. However, Ceviche shrimps & fish texture were very dry, cardboard alike and only had a sour taste. I had a really hard time chewing it and ended up stop eating it. Taco pork was very very dry. One of them came with fries and only the taste of salt. We ordered wine and it served wrong table. Not very impressed with service and Franky disappointed with quality of food. I wish they could improve the quality and taste of food because the ambience is really fun and nice.

The nachos were to die for the drinks were delicious and the atmosphere was welcoming. I would definitely go again and recommend it to others.

Google
Server spilled hibiscus juice on me - it spilled all over my legs, shoes, bag, and arm. Thankfully I was wearing black or my reaction would have been 10x less grace. In the end no compensation offered. Also expected more from the tacos but they were dry. Their rating does not match. Never coming back here. Edit: as we were leaving the server had I believe the owner on the phone. They asked me to leave my name and number - was sent a text offering a free drink when I return. The gesture is appreciated but the incident should have been compensated the first time.

Google
Loved it here. Great dining experience and staff were very friendly. Reasonable prices (about $20 per person). Each taco comes with an extra shell, so you can transfer some of the toppings to it and make a second taco.

Yelp
It wasn't bad for 65 bucks for 12 tacos and some fries not the best deal The steak tacos were not good way to hard I loved the guac and chips tho

Yelp
Got: taco platter (al pastor pork, carne asada beef, grilled shrimp), fish and shrimp mix ceviche, lengua taco (tongue, no picture, sorry) Price: $42 CAD for taco platter, $20 for ceviche, $6.5 for individual large taco Value: 8/10 for sharing the taco platter with 3 to 4 people, 6/10 overall The taco platter comes with 12 small tacos (single layer tortilla, the individual a la carte tacos have 2 tortillas and larger), a side of guac, topped with fries, pineapples grilled onions, and cilantro. You can choose 3 taco fillings ranging from pork, to shrimp, to veggies. Spitting this taco platter between 3 people is recommended so that each person gets 4 tacos. The tacos are stuffed! Not overly greasy. The shrimp was slightly overly salty which wasn't unbearable but definitely not ideal. The pastor and carne asada were standard yet delicious. I've never seen this before but the tacos were topped with fries. Necessary, no. Welcomed and novel, yeah. The ceviche was tangy and limey, having the characteristic "slightly touch" citrus cured texture without being cooked. I think for $20, the value here was a little lacking with the amount they gave but seafood is more expensive so not complaining too much. The single a la carte tacos are larger than the street tacos in the taco platter. They're almost twice the size of the smaller street tacos. Pretty much the same as their smaller counter parts except larger and the tortillas are doubled up to support more meat and filling. 2, maybe 3 of these large tacos should be enough for a meal. Overall, $13 for 2 a la carte large tacos seems pretty good for a meal. I'd recommend splitting the taco platter with 3 people $14/person so you can sample 3 different choices of fillings and have guac included. Good place to get a taco fix and share food with friends!

Yelp
Back from Toronto. By far, the best taco I've got in Montreal. I always compare taco to Kensington Market in Old Toronto. The best I found there. We had a box of two persons (12 tacos). You can have 3 of 9 or 12 flavours. I hope they can have fried fish and octopus. The box for two are good when you want to go for picnic. Have one to pick up and go to a park near by. Just don't get them cold. Then you can enjoy it. 4.5/5 I would say.

Yelp
Was not a huge fan of this place. In my opinion the tacos were super dry and the guacamole was very standard. The fries on top of the tacos was a fun twist though. The drinks were also a bit disappointing. The highlight of the meal was the ceviche and the atmosphere was fun.

Yelp
First place I went to eat when I found out that they're terrace was open!! This place is incredible. The meat is seasoned and marinated to perfection. Their hot sauces sauces are my favourite too! It's close to Atwater market and totally worth the visit. I've also ordered their taco box from them on Uber eats and although it took a while, it was still a satisfying purchase. My favourites : marinated pork & beef tongue (don't knock it till you try it!)

Yelp
I walked by here 2 weeks ago and saw a decent sized lineup waiting to get in, I figured it was a good place. So... I Came here today with my friend and ordered two steak tacos, small nachos and Shrimp tacos. Our waiter took our orders and the food arrived VERY QUICK like.... Food shouldn't arrive this fast kinda quick... The food arrived and to say it was disappointing is an understatement, the steak was dry, I had 4 tortillas....why are you putting 4.... You know what... Never-mind... Then I noticed THEY PUT FRENCH FRIES ON OUR TACOS!!!! Both steak and shrimp tacos had soggy fries on top!! Why are you doing this?? After listing to reggae music in a Mexican restaurant for 2 Min. The nachos arrived and were cold, soggy and had a horrible portions of cheese and toppings, This should have been out first sign to leave. Then we noticed our waiter was drinking and doing shots with some people at the table next to us, we had sat for almost 20 minutes with empty glasses waiting for our bill. He was clearly having a better evening then us. I'll never return to this establishment, we had an absolute miserable time and made a big mistake even giving this place the time of day. Never again..

Yelp
We have attempted to visit @tacos_victor twice and we walked the narrow path beneath the smoking skies - each try... But it can't rain all the time, especially indoors . Although there is nothing like terrasse tacos on a nice day, the dinning room here is just as lovely. As for the food well, you can never go wrong with tacos, right? Very filling, very large portions of spiced, fresh, tender meat on a crunchy, savoury shell will have you practically rolling home.

Yelp
It is hard to find authentic and delicious tacos in Montreal. Taco Victor is near my place. I always passed by; and it is almost always packed. Today, the day came for me to render a visit there with my sister(my food buddy). It's is tiny place; with high stools and tables, plus mini spot outside. We decided to sit outside. I placed my order, we got ceviche with pita, and three different tacos (bavette, chorizo and shrimp). Beside the cash counter, there are three large mortars with three types of sauces(mild, hot and very hot) for you to take in tiny little containers with your food plus with wedges of limes. The hot sauce was the best. Plus, we got non alcoholic sangria soda, Jarritos orange soda. Finally, our orders were presented to us. What a delightful surprise, our tacos were sprinkled with French fries. We bought our food outside. We devoured the food like animals. It was so good that I don't have words to describe. For my sister, it was the best tacos ever... and she is already asking me when are we coming back again.

Yelp
Wow this place is sooooo good and authentic Mexican tacos, there food is soo delicious. The guacamole is on point and chips are made differently. The nachos are good, and yummy. There machelidia drink is really goood. Everything was perfect can't wait too come back.

Yelp
Had lunch just after 2 so no lunch time rush. Service was friendly and food was great! Good value! Will be back!

Yelp
What can I say about this spot? First. It offers what a taco should taste like. There is a special circle in heaven for those who add fries in a taco. Yes, this is legit Mexico City street tasting. I may be around the rest of Mexico, but this is my reference. 2. Quantity. Not many taco restaurants in Montreal make a taco so large that with only 3 you're done for the day. This is also a nice trait. 3. Campechano and Lengua tacos. Best tacos there is. No discussion. Your argument is invalid. Many places stopped selling the campechano (beef stake and chorizo mix) without reason. This place stays strong and puts the Mexican cuisine where it is suppoosed to be. No wonder why this place skyrocketed so quickly. I still have to try their veggie options, so I am a bit biased on that side. This is one of the spots that will make you forget about 2020 and take you to another dimension of taste and delight. 5/5 #NoEraPenal

Yelp
Dear Victor, You make really good tacos. Why do you have to spoil them by putting fries on top? My extensive knowledge of tacos (based on years of eating them + watching Taco Chronicles on Netflix) says that's not very authentic. I had been to Tacos Victor years ago and remember thinking they were a bit dry. But I went back today and it wasn't the case - they were really good! I had Bavette and Shrimp and they were both great. The shrimp was particularly tasty, not overcooked. I pushed aside the fries and enjoyed the tacos. The tortilla is quite good, the sauces excellent, there is a lot to love here!
google avatar

Yelp
Really wonderful place. Great people and service and the food is SO tasty! Several of their tacos come with french fries on top. I didn't think that would work but - to my surprise - it's really wonderful. They recently added an Al Pastor taco too (that one doesn't come with fries and is also very good). I actually try to drop by at Tacos Victor on the walk back home every time that I get a haircut (at Notorious Barbershop - a bit west on Notre Dame from there). I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Hottest Taco bar in the city Little Mexico in the heart of St Henri ! Food Is Above and Beyond Fast Fun And delicious with a party Atmosphere Full Bar And friendly staff makes Tacos Victor a 5 star Experience!

Yelp
This can be good .. I just dont understand why cant they put a sauce that doesnt require the hot sauces you need to put yourself.. like they can be a little more creative..I found the taco to be extremely dry. Not my jam

Yelp
There are authentic Mexican tacos. I love the tacos. Try ordering the campechano, it's the best one. The shrimp cocktail is also delicious.

Yelp
Was looking forward to trying Tacos Victor for some time now after hearing how good it was. We were seated and the waiter came to take our order. We asked to start with chips and salsa. He did not understand us and asked if we spoke French. It was very clear he was Spanish speaking but I honestly was astounded that he didn't understand salsa. He ended up bringing us a $16 plate of nachos. We then ordered the taco box with napolis...he brought out our order with French fries instead. We had our water glasses and ordered 2 diet cokes. We then ordered a second diet coke and a regular coke. After about 10 minutes we receive one diet coke. The water glasses of everyone around us were regularly refilled however, for some reason ours were removed from our table. My boyfriend now has nothing to drink at all. He finally had to get up and go to the counter to ask for a regular coke...they hand him a diet coke ...of course he refuses it and repeats himself for the 5th time that he wants a REGULAR coke. They finally gave him his can and then he had to ask for a glass with ice....something that everyone received when ordering a soda. I asked for a takeout box for our leftovers...before receiving it the table was cleared so I had to use a chip to empty the guacamole dish into my container. We asked for our bill and waited at least 10 minutes for that. I will say that the food was delicious but it was such a disappointing experience. You would expect that there would be someone in the restaurant that at least spoke French. We are bilingual and were communicating in French and English to try and get someone to understand. Most frustrating experience ever in a restaurant.

Yelp
For $6.50 you get an overstuffed soft shell taco with some fries. The ingredients are of great quality, the service is quick, and there are like 6 menu options total. That being said, the fries should come on the side, the staff need to be more outgoing and ready to take customer orders, and the way they have their sauces displayed is (sadly) very unhygienic. Would definitely stop by on a weekly basis for lunch if I worked nearby.

Yelp
Tacos Victor, in concept, is a really great idea, and for all intents and purposes should be a really great place. They keep it simple, focusing just on tacos with a few drinks, with awesome choices for cuts of meat (e.g. beef tongue, sirloin, and flap steak) and other proteins, but in the execution of everything together, the taco at the end of the day fell a little bit flat for me, especially for $6 CAD/portion. Ironically though, I have no complaints about the meat! I had the beef tongue taco when I stopped by and they gave me a decent-sized portion that was soft, tender, and still juicy as if it just came out of a long-braise or pressure cooker. If I'm remembering it correctly, they also sprinkled some coarse sea salt on the top of it as well which really made the flavor of the meat come alive. The problem unfortunately was on the bottom AND the top of the taco. For some reason completely unknown to me, they put thinly-cut soggy fries on top of the meat, and then below, they layered it with TWO not-at-all-toasted corn tortillas. Now two corn tortillas is not totally uncommon based on a few encounters I've had here and there, but for me it almost completely ruined the dining experience. There's nothing worse than biting into far too much bread when trying to enjoy a protein. Whether you're having a burger, a lobster roll, or even a taco, too many carbs surrounding the goodness within will downpour rain all over your day anyday. As much as I was trying to enjoy the lime, salsa, and salted tongue, all of the flavors kept on being torn away by this awful chewy double-tortilla with soggy potatoes on top. I eventually just removed the awful breadiness myself to try and enjoy the meat more, but at that point it was already too late. If they just served the meat on a crisp tortilla with your standard taco accompaniments, I feel like they would be far more successful. Unfortunately as it stands today, the entire dining experience is weighed down by an egregious amount of dough. If you do happen to stop by, please keep this in mind and maybe ask them to add more "customization" to your order to get a really fine product, because at the very minimum, the meat they cook is very good.

Yelp
This was perhaps my most disappointing experience with a taqueria ever, and boy am I ever a taco fan, never mind a Mexican food aficionado! I ordered 3 tacos at the hefty price of $6.50 each from Uber eats. I had been in a taco mood for days!!! Ladies and gentlemen, who wants to eat tacos filled with French Fries? All of the tacos except the ceviche taco was filled with greasy French Fries! They were inedible! The only one I was able to eat was the ceviche taco! I had to fish out the beef and eat it separately from the taco. I think they were trying to make their own tortillas, but that didn't work out too well either as their tortillas were undercooked and stuck together. Overall it was a real waste of time, money and I shall never attempt to eat there or order from there again. Seriously, tacos slathered with French Fries? A real crime and an insult to real Mexican food. Just take a look at the pics!
google avatar

Vanessa V.

Yelp
it was one of my fave taco spots but it got really expensive. theres no more charm of the little taqueria it feels rushed and too commercial. still good though
google avatar

Tamara H.

Yelp
Yummy and filling taco for $6.50. Not bad! The flavors were really good, the bavette and shrimp were cooked perfectly and I loved the 3 choice of sauces. It's a small place with counters where you can stand and eat, or 4 chairs to eat at inside. There are benches you can sit at outside the resto too. Cute & basic decor. Loving all of the Mexican options around the Sud-Ouest area!
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
I had the taco vege without the cheese and cactus and it was a delicious vegan taco. Great tacos are not easy to find in Montreal and I was really impressed. Also, the taco is quite huge, one might be enough but leftover taco is a good taco too.
google avatar

Yojna J.

Yelp
This is probably my new fav taco place as the tacos are freshly made and so delicious. I had the shrimp and vegetarian ones and they were both full with flavours and tasted so good. The sauces on the side were my favourite. I also love the fact that they had fries on the tacos, add fries to any meal and you'd be a happy camper but on tacos; totally rocked this idea whoever had it :)
google avatar

Noha G.

Yelp
After hearing a few rave reviews about this place from various friends, I finally tried these famous tacos and all I can really say is meh.. The fries are yummy but the tacos kinda taste like nothing. Had a beef and a veggie one and neither had much flavour. Not sure if the flavour is supposed to come from added hot sauce but I was hoping that the contents of the tacos would be marinated or flavoured somehow. Anyways, not much to say. I see awesome reviews so maybe I came on an off day but I won't be returning unfortunately!

Elle W.

Yelp
You have to practically tackle a waiter to get more water or napkins. Even requesting the bill took FOREVER and the restaurant wasn't full by any means. Great food but almost belligerent service.
google avatar

Roberto C.

Yelp
Excellent tacos. My kids and I order the chorizo and we really enjoyed them. My wife ordered the bavette and she also really enjoyed it.
google avatar

Maggy V.

Yelp
The taste of the dishes for each taco is good, the only bad thing is that the tortillas are always riping apart and a little soggy if you dont eat fast. The service is too slow. Went on a busy day; after wanting just one more taco, we waited for 25 min, yes just for one more!
google avatar

Feifei L.

Yelp
I was very hesitant to come here because of the pictures that others posted: fries in tacos?? How can the taco taste any good?? I was wrong because the tacos are delicious here. Every Mexican knows that sauce is the key to a good taco - it brings out the soul of a taco and they have three authentic and delicious sauces for you to serve on your tacos. Something that I would like to be able to do, is to separate the two tortillas and make two separate tacos with each serving. Kinda difficult to do if they're stuck together.
google avatar

Gabriela S.

Yelp
The tacos at this place are flavourful and the service is friendly. I can see that there are a few people here who are criticizing the price point and portion size but it worked well for me (and trust me when it comes to tacos I start to really identify with the "bet you can't have just one" mentality). I walked by and got 1 taco for 6 dollars with fries piled on top and it filled me right up on a hot summer day. The salsa is delicious and the menu is sparse because NEWSFLASH it's much easier and better to concentrate on making small delicious menu than to have a lot of choice but sacrifice quality. I've brought several of my friends since and they have all exclaimed that it is the best taco they've ever had in the city. I don't know if I can say that (because of childhood allegiances - I think I may have a blood oath with another place), but it's the best one that I've had in St Henri and very high on the list!
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
Location: On Notre-Dame West. Street parking is available - I don't recall seeing meters, but I wasn't paying attention. The closest subway is probably St. Henri and you'd have to walk from there. The place: It's tiny and meant to be more of a take-out joint then a sit-down place. They do have bar-type seating at the front with about 4 chairs. The two other counters don't have any seating so you'd have to stand. There's one tall chair and I was lucky enough to snag it because I'm quick like that. The goods: I stopped in for a quick lunch and went with the shrimp taco. The shrimp were perfectly grilled and flavourful, served on two soft taco shells with fries on top (!). Cucumber, radish and cilantro were served on the side. I enjoyed the taco, and one was enough for me. The fries were great too! Now, pay attention when you go or you'll do like I did - totally miss the salsa and guacamole that's located right next to you when you pick up your order. Literally. It was RIGHT there. Service: Friendly. Price point: To me, $6 for a taco is expensive. Back in Vancouver, you'll pay about $3 for the same size but there's more variety in terms filling. That said, this place is a great place to stop in for a snack.

Yelp
I'm originally from NYC and I've never had tacos like this before. My friends and I visited Montreal for 3 days. We originally planned to go to Arthur's Nosh, but unfortunately it was closed. Our hunger forced us to walk around near our Airbnb place and we came across Tacos Victor. It was the best decision. We got the Campechanos and the Shrimp Tacos. A-mazing. Each bite had a burst of flavor, especially with the choice of 3 hot sauces. We actually ended our trip with Tacos Victor LOL. I'll miss this place..
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
Amazing tacos for the price! Brought my dad here as he was checking out the neighborhood and we both loved the experience. The vibe was very chill and the staff helped explain the menu and make suggestions. The tacos come with fries on top which are soooo good! They also have 3 homemade chili sauces for those of you that love spicy food. All in all it was an astounding restaurant which I will be going back to soon!
google avatar

Rajendra Réjean K. C. B.

Yelp
Tacos Victor isn't the best. They put French fries in their tacos and that's just whack. They've got a dearth of vegetarian selection. The French fry/bland Métro market Saputo plastic mozzarella/mushroom taco is unpleasantly stodgy. People of the world ! hear me with your heart of hearts when I say to you that, I, your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man doth love and respect the French fry as well as the taco ... but never, ever, should the twain meet. French fry is French fry and taco is taco and never shall the twain meet again in my mouth ever; fo' 'eva'eva. The horchata was also meh. It was rather sweet and tasteless. I want more rice and more true cinnamon in my horchata. Anyway I'm going to hightail it on over to Taco Tijuana on Ouest Sherbs and Royal where the tacos are double the size and half the price! I gots to get my taco on full frontal.
google avatar

Tara D.

Yelp
Meh. The tacos are too expensive, and I don't understand the french fries served on them. I would have to disagree with the previous review, one taco doesn't make a meal. I had their Tamarind drink as well. It was very underwhelming. Sorry but $6.00 for a taco is ridiculous.

Claudio S.

Yelp
Feel my review is not fair, this used to be one of my favourite taquerias in Montreal, back then would have given 5 stars, but my last visit was very disappointing. Upon stepping in perceived a funky smell, like a heavy B. O., tried to pick up the source, but cannot assure what it was. Then the actual tacos, the tortillas were not fully cooked, so besides the taste they did not hold the meat, got saggy and broke. Hope Victor Tacos re-evaluate and come back strong.
google avatar

Judy K.

Yelp
Good location; and nice decor. Little menu is very simple and doesn't explain much. We ordered three tacos, shrimp, Bavette and carnitas. All very basic. They are served with soggy fries on top of them and cilantro, Not great but not horrible. The shrimp one was good but i chalk that up to the really good hot sauce/salsa you can choose from. Hot and very hot were delicious. Probably wouldn't go back. Just didn't do it for me.

Truco K.

Yelp
1st round: "Donald Trump Taco" lots of tongue with no brain... (see round 3) "Bavette" (Arrachera)= 90% a touch on the dry side, but regardless, full of flavor; "Contre-Filet" (Bistec)= 95% really C really good. Round 2: "Longaniza" (agárrame confianza!) solid 95%, specially with the fries wall centred with coriander, onion and double tortilla! Round 3: The infamous "DT (tongue) Taco"= 100%. Truly amazing prep, just for connoseurs! Friendly staff, nice urban deco, stand up concept, just like in Mexico! All in all, an dream addition to the taco offering on the island. Made rememberu the "Chupacabras Taco Stand", that good! ;o)
google avatar

Anna Jane M.

Yelp
Soooo delicious!! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Warm cheery welcoming vibe! Amazing food and lovely people! After your taco I recommend getting the slightly spiced coffee and melt-in-your-mouth cookies to top it all off. Yummmm I would happily eat here every day!!!
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
This place became a favourite. Sure the choice is limited, but we can't get enough of Victor's tasty tacos. For 6$ you get a taco with fries. Everything was tasty (sauces included)! I eat a lot and two tacos are a lot for me. Plus the owner and staff are super friendly with us.
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
Good price. Great vegetarian options. Welcoming staff.
google avatar

Janet R.

Yelp
I really liked this place. Great tacos. My only complaint is that $6.50 is a bit pricey for one taco. Even though they do add fries on top and it's pretty filling.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Went here with my family upon a recommendation from a friend (who had yet to suggest a bad spot to me). It was really busy but we were served promptly. We tried 5 of the 6 soft shell tacos on the menu, and liked all of them. The 3 salsa options of varying intensity were good. After 5 tacos among the three of us we were pleasantly full, with no room for dessert... Definitely would go back...

Daniel G.

Yelp
Really great service! Nice place. Ordered some tacos and they came with a lot of fries. So not really authentic if that's what you're looking for. Taste good but I think next time I will ask to not put fries in my dish. It's just a question of personal preference.
google avatar

Howard G.

Yelp
I do love my tacos but was disappointed in this place. Whereas the pricing is very reasonable, the tacos are 50% soggy french fry which is both odd and deceptive when you think you're getting a full taco. The tacos took a long time to prepare and in such a small place with alot of people waiting it gets a bit uncomfortable pretty quickly. They also double up on the tortillas also so between that and the mound of fries it lacks the flavor of the other ingredients.
google avatar

Sen S.

Yelp
Very delicious tacos! As a resident of Chicago where we are blessed with an abundance of taquerias and surrounded by Mexican natives, I was worried that Mr. Victor's tacos wouldn't compare but they were satisfying. Adding the special Quebecois food favorite of fries is a great touch.
google avatar

Juan C.

Yelp
Everything was fresh, service was fast and great atmosphere. Also the doubled tortilla is the best idea ever to prevent them for breaking apart. Will go back ASAP.
