On the Grid : Taco Cat

"Yep, it really exists -- a taco place with delivery, only by bike (and with a cat mascot, because you CAN have everything in life). Taco Cat serves up creative takes on street-style tacos, burritos, and Sunday-brunch breakfast burritos. They'll even bring you bombers of beer from East Lake Brewery. There aren't a lot of eateries out there able to boast specials as abominable as a "$4.20 Cool-Ranch-Dorito fried-mac-n-cheese taco with bacon, ranch, hot sauce, and Cheeto crumble" while also providing unique vegan options, but Taco Cat is next level. Order it for delivery (and don't forget to tip the messenger!) or stop by their walk-in location at [Midtown Global Market](www.onthegrid.city/minneapolis-st-paul/uptown-powderhorn/midtown-global-market)." - Teagan White

18 Fantastic Mexican Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul

"Taco Taxi is one of East Lake Street’s busiest restaurants — people file in at all hours of the day for fresh carnitas and spit-roasted al pastor, tipping their hats to the yellow cab (the literal taco taxi) parked outside. Brothers Carlos and Hector Lopez serve their birria Jalisco-style, and there are few better soul-warming stews to cap a long day, though the well-stuffed burritos may take the cake for hangover prevention after a late night out." - Eater Staff

Where to Find Birria and Quesabirria Tacos Around the Twin Cities

"This East Lake Street spot is owned by brothers Carlos and Hector Lopez, who hail from the Jalisico region of Mexico. They offer a steaming birria de caldo — or order tacos with choice of meat topped with chopped onion and cilantro and a side of fiery consomé." - Cinnamon Janzer, Lindsay Abraham, Eater Staff

Google
I live about 60 steps from the Taxi. This place has been there for me for five years. So dependable, such quality food and a little less demanding on your pocket. For a Jackson + a few more I can get a burrito, a side/beans, side/rice, chicharones and a grin from the tip jar. Not bad in these expensive days. Get some. Put it in your face. It'll be good for everybody. AND....open till 2am. Why are you still reading this?

Andrew Abi-Mansour

Google
Best tacos in town hands down! It's all about the dipping salsas, they are very flavorful and a must try. So much so that the consommé was unnecessary at all for birria tacos. The place is busy but service is quick. Plenty of places for dining in.

Google
Great place to get real Mexican tacos. They even have goat meat 🐐It’s a hole in the wall but the tacos are tasty and original. You have the option to make your tacos Americanized but I would go with the original ones. These are the tacos you get in Mexico 🇲🇽

Google
I fw taco taxi HEAVY but when you become a regular the get real sloppy had to drive 30 min back bc they gave me a burrito with no meat and then made me stand there forever waiting for them to fix there mistake no apology or anything p.s be very mindful a lot of homeless people come in and out asking for money the entire wait time.

Google
This is my second time being here. My friends and I ate here at 1 AM on July 7th. The food came out fast and tasted fresh. Quesadilla was great!

Louie R.P.

Google
The tacos are tiny but whoa! These little things have huge flavor! I hate to say it but these are probably the best tacos I've had in Minneapolis. I love and am a loyal customer to another taco joint but the flavor here at Taco Taxi is unbelievable. Unfortunately, with a taco truck it means no dining room, which sucks when there's snow out and you have to wait for your food, but the tacos are so worth the wait. I feel like I'm cheating on my usual taco place but they are busy enough and probably won't miss me. I will be back for these amazing little guys!

Thuy Nguyen

Google
The food was great. Went around midnight so there was plenty of parking. It was pretty busy. There isn’t a whole lot of seating. The staff were really nice and patient with me while I was ordering. They do take card, but cash/wells fargo card for no surcharge.

DJ D

Google
Pretty greasy and unrefined. The tortillas tasted and had the texture of store bought ones. Although I ordered a selection of different meats, they tasted indistinguishably similar, which is surprising and disappointing. There was little attention to detail, evident in the large pieces of radish carelessly thrown on the tacos; it was not possible to eat the taco with such a large piece. The attendant sauce was also bland.

Yelp
This is a review for the food truck on Lyndale. This was delicious! We ordered a pork street taco, a carne quesadilla and a cabeza burrito. The food was delicious! Each was a hearty portion, moist and flavorful. The street tacos are pretty small so I'd say for a full meal, you should order at least 4.
google avatar

Caleb N.

Yelp
Busy street from the window, decent marinated pork tacos. Customer service was good. I'll be back.
google avatar

Hallie O.

Yelp
The food was good. I got a chicken quesadilla, rice, and beans. However, the inside of their restaurant was somewhat dirty and didn't feel welcoming to sit down and eat. I also don't believe there is any free parking. From what I could tell there was only paid Street parking available.

Yelp
This is a review for the Taco Taxi food truck on the corner of Lagoon and Emerson: The tacos are the perfect snack or meal for cheap. Currently at $2.50 per street taco, you have the option of carne asada, pollo, al pastor or cabeza. They also have other traditional Mexican street foods such as burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. I opted for the carne asada and they were delicious. The corn tortillas were fresh, the beef was flavorful but not dry, and they gave me a lime on the side which really helped enhance the flavor. Keep in mind, they are street tacos which are smaller than you may be used to. For a meal, I'd recommend ordering 4-5 to be full.
google avatar

Rishi S.

Yelp
They always have amazing tacos! This place is always reliable and open late for amazing food that you'd pay for during the day as well as late at night. I'd recommend any of their tortas or tacos (except taco americano - I've never had it but you'd be missing out if you went out here and didn't pick any of their authentic options). Classic food truck with a cool style as a taxi and always great service!

Yelp
Had to be in Minneapolis for a week and it's safe to say I had to visit Taco Taxi a few times during my entire stay ... one of the only late night spots for legit tacos .... Whole in the wall place with some interesting people watching outside ... But what matters is what was going on inside ... the tacos were legit .. Hell the birria was amazing even on a hot 80 degree night... Full of flavor and excellent and good price. . If I ever have to VA back in the area... taco taxi will get another visit from me .

Mark S.

Yelp
Fine in a pinch and they're open late which is nice. Expensive for what you get though and for the same price there's better taco stands on Lake.

Lina K.

Yelp
Amazing tacos at a very good price! Love to go here Just wish they were closer to me !

Yelp
Taco Taxi is one of many taquerias in the Phillips area of Minneapolis. To be honest, as a Chicago transplant I haven't been that impressed with most of the Mexican fast food here. Taco Taxi is one of the better ones, and I've never walked away disappointed. The tacos always hit the spot and are prepared authentically. Tortas here are on point -- not extraordinary, but never disappointing. And the burritos here are good lord the biggest in the area (do not order unless hungry).

Yelp
A good part of Lake Street in south Minneapolis has really become a Little Mexico enclave with a lot of culture and great food in recent years. Taco Taxi is one of the many local, hole-in-the-wall spots for authentic street tacos, burritos and other tasty treats. No Tex-Mex stuff here. I'm not sure I can say it is better or worse than any of the other little places in the area but there are a couple of things that made it stand out in my mind during my lunch visit. First, it's bright yellow exterior and catchy name draw you in like moth to flame. Once in, I noted that it was not as crowded as some other places. That may be because it is a little more to the east and I think that the other places get more pedestrian traffic from the midtown market area workers. That makes this great for a quick in and out lunch without lines. Second, their prices are about $1 less than other shops for a decent burrito. I think that the portions here are a bit smaller too but I kind of like that since you can eat a delicious lunch for well under $10 here and not waddle out feeling like you just took down an entire side of beef. That often happens at some of the other places and I spend the afternoon in a post-lunch semi-coma which is kind of non-productive. Finally, their lengua was outstanding. Beefy, tender, really tasty and very much like pot roast wrapped in a tortilla with cilantro and onion. Salsa rojo on the side was plenty flavorful and had a nice heat to it. They threw in a freebie grilled jalapeño with my order when I asked for a Chile Toreado which was nice since other places have charged me up to another $1 for this added gut grenade. Definitely no complaints about the food although I can't really say that I prefer it over any other local shop but it sure is nice to have a lot of great options in this area. Minneapolis is really lucky to have a growing ethnic food scene and Taco Taxi is a very affordable part of that. Definitely recommend giving them a try!

Yelp
Normally I go to the Taco Taxi Truck just a few blocks east of this store front, but once in a while it's just too darn cold to be outside. As far as I can tell, the tacos are the same...but inside they are a tad more expensive. Are we paying a surcharge for heat? Well ok, that makes sense. These tacos, tho. They are my favorite cheap tacos. Anytime I'm on East Lake Street, I stop by. They keep too, so if you're not hungry get some for lunch tomorrow.

Hannah W.

Yelp
Pretty good tacos for the price. Would like to go back a try more. Worth waiting in the cold.

Yelp
Soooooooo many options for Mexican food options on Lake Steet! Taco Taxi is one of my top choices. As someone from California, this meets my standard of what makes a good taco. One great perk about this places, it is open til 2am. Parking is a tad challenging. When you walk in you get the tacos smell and it makes you want to salivate instantly. I appreciate that Taco Taxi's menus are made simple as it's just the cuts of meat they sell and how do you want your meat. I only get the tacos here they are 2.25 per taco, which is okay. On the tacos it is two tortillas, meat, onion, and cilantro. My favor cuts to get is the carne asada and lengua. The carne asada is flavorful and the lengua is favorful as well as soft. They offer two types of salsas and personally the green sauce is my choice. I also get the horchata too which is a nice touch to the tacos. I usually eat one as they are fresh then eat the rest at home. Something to note that they have a credit card minimum, so have cash on hand to make it is easy. I love taco taxi! I will be coming back to get my taco fix!

Yelp
Let me start by saying in know way am I the street taco guru.But...... I KNOW A GOOD TACO WHEN I SEE ONE. Hands down the best 2 bites on Lake street. Yes I said 2 bites, very small tacos. I believe each one is priced under $2.00 so grab 4. Nice staff, very fast service. A great south Minneapolis Gem.

Taylor S.

Yelp
Love this place and great price. I have only been to the food truck but it's fire. I would recommend.
google avatar

Maggie A.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican food in the Twin Cities! My aunt and brother have been on a taco tour of the twin cities trying all tacos they can and Taco Taxi remains the best rated by them! The chicken burrito is amazing. It's big enough to share if you're not starving. I'd also recommend the steak tacos!
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Late night taco cravings are so real...and on this particular Saturday night at 1am, they sounded like the perfect fix. East Lake Street is full of taco places, so I wanted to see if there would be anything about Taco Taxi that would stand out. I got two tacos: the asada and al pastor. We got them to go, and to be honest, there wasn't a lot to rave about. I've had much better authentic tacos at other places. I liked the asada taco, but the al pastor taco fell short for me. The sauce didn't have much of a spicy kick to it like I expected it would, but it helped the dryness of the tacos. With that being said, it wasn't bad but don't expect that your experience here will blow all others out of the water. At $1.95 per taco, the prices are very reasonable, but that goes for most taco places. If you want to try Taco Taxi, there's plenty of other options on the menu as well, so I'd say to give it a shot! There's street parking right outside of Taco Taxi and the staff members are such nice people!

Yelp
Broken rickety tables Dirty Unwelcoming environment No chips No salsa bar Given 1 type of salsa (I guess this is all they had) Pastor - dry Asada- dry no flavor Pollo - dry - moderate flavor Rice - extremely dry- barely ate Frijoles - the best thing I had 1 Star extra given cuz the salsa was good... too bad there was no chips to make dip it in - by that would have meant I had even a dryer mouth from eating the food. I won't go back- still on the hunt ...
google avatar

Hima M.

Yelp
As much as I wanted to love this place ($1.75 for each taco!), I've had better tacos in the Twin Cities. 1. Staff: incredibly friendly! You order at the counter and they call your name when your food is ready. 2. Environment: small interior, few tables which can be cleaned better. No bathroom. 3. Food: I had the pastor tacos and my friend had their vegetarian burrito. Food was average. Flavors were lacking in the burrito. The pastor tacos tasted good but not great. Overall, the price is unbeatable but the food could be better.
google avatar

Cali N.

Yelp
Fairly priced, decent tacos, good service. Lengua is my favorite because it is soft, and comparable to my fav taco spots in Little village Chicago. Asada and cabeza were decent. I wouldn't recommend the al pastor - a little dry, lacking in flavor. The tortillas are packaged, not house made, and you can taste it. They crumble a little bit.

Benjamin T.

Yelp
This place is the real deal. Yummy meat piled high on the grill. Tacos flying out the door.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
We flew in from WA one time, and found this gem super late at night! It was delicious!
google avatar

Donald H.

Yelp
Y'all don't even sell tacos on DoorDash or any other app I ordered and you stole my money and said, "there's nothing I can do for you too bad!" Rude as all hell and there is much better tacos all over, like the west side of my city, Saint Paul! Learn manners and how to run a taco business.

Asia O.

Yelp
Tiny tiny tacos and sketchy location. Apple Maps wait it was a half a mile away but luckily I saw it in an empty parking lot.
google avatar

Derek H.

Yelp
Best tacos in Minneapolis. Get the lengua. Even if you've never had lengua, just trust me. Perfect.

Michael H.

Yelp
Great food but the location is in a crazy spot. Definitely a pull up and pull off type of place
google avatar

Viviana O.

Yelp
The beans were tasty, they had a nice jalapeño kick. The rice was ok, a little overcooked and dry. Not all menus were updated so I ended up paying $5 for both instead of $2.50 like the menu I ordered from said; the cashier was slightly rude when I pointed that out.
google avatar

Sitha K.

Yelp
Because it's Tuesday, it's only right that we had tacos for a late lunch. We have tried many tacos from the suburbs to the city and this is probably the best one we've had in minneapolis. I mean in comparison to California--- this is it. The Mexican burrito was stuffed with tons of meat ( if that's what you like) and for only $7.95! So if you're on lake street or Minneapolis and you're headed towards chipotle, reroute yourself, your belly and mouth will thank you it was such a huge burrito. Even after eating three tacos, I still managed to finish his burrito.. because it was that good. I'm never cheating on taco taxi ever! Unless I'm in Mexico or California
google avatar

Rose M.

Yelp
On a mission to find the best and most authentic tacos on lake street. Started here with Taco Taxi in the Kmart parking lot. No frills authentic Mexican street tacos on a taco truck. $1.75/taco. You have 4 choices--cabeza, carne asada, chicken, or pork. I chose the cabeza & asada. Plenty of meat in the little street food style corn tortilla but both were a bit dry. Came with cilantro, onion, & lemon slices (typically it's lime).

Stirling H.

Yelp
Best tacos in Minneapolis, however several times I asked for no onions only to get home and find onions on the tacos , I'm allergic so I've had to throw away tacos several times even af giving them a tip, it seems the one in uptown does this the most
google avatar

Duke S.

Yelp
Street tacos were excellent. I found the selection of meats. I found the food to be very authentic well prepared and fresh
google avatar

Abimelec G.

Yelp
Now I love love this street tacos, ME ENCANTAN.!!!.. They are very authentic street tacos and they always here in the same location, I like them because they use the small tortilla and very tender, I had steak tacos "Tacos de Asada" and I just love them I he's red sauce OMG super good. Each taco is $1.50.

Paige K.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!!! the tacos were amazing (especially the birria ones) and the consume was PERFECT!! highly highly recommend
google avatar

Julianne C.

Yelp
I'd heard this place had great tacos and I am obsessed with authentic tacos so I had to stop by. It's definitely no-frills and has a limited but solid menu, although they don't have guacamole if that's what you're craving. Their tacos are delicious and high quality at a good price. The only thing I would have wanted was a selection of salsas as the tacos came with only one salsa that had a smoky flavor.
google avatar

Keit O.

Yelp
This tiny place is so great. Ran in for a super quick dinner 10 minutes before a show at the HOTB across the street (genius, right) and got the pork pastor quesadilla and tacos. Food was out in 3-4 minutes--hot, fresh, and with generous sides! Scarfed it down and made it to the show on time, with leftovers in a fancy compostable box. The only thing I felt bad about was when we handed them the used plates over the counter like a bunch of idiots. Turns out the bus tray was just around the corner, d'oh!
google avatar

H R.

Yelp
I recently visited Minneapolis and went to Taco Taxi two nights in a row, they were that good. The first night was a touch better than second, but both nights were great. I don't understand why this place wasn't a bit busier. The salsa and food is excellent. Seriously don't miss stopping there.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Our family looks forward to Tuesday because of this food truck of tastiness! (Taco Tuesday-get it?)Our regular order includes cabeza and Asada tacos. The freshness of the meat, tortillas and salsa are consistent. Occasionally, I get a torta-they are huge and the bread is perfect! We love the rice and the service is quick! Side notes: -cash only! -adequate parking -staff is usually bi-lingual. -over order, you're gonna want more and they're so fun to share!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Yesssssss! Finally stopped into the Taco taxi store, after several years of Kmart parking lot action. Tacos are all so flavorful and cooked well. Never had any tough, chewy or weird meat (and I'm a big baby about that). Also, THEY ARE $1.50. WHAT!?! Their sauces are amazing as well, and I always drown my tacos in them. Taco Taxi is a Minneapolis staple.

Beezy G.

Yelp
For a place that's open way past midnight, this is a great place to get cheap eats and flavorful food. I'd like to think I'm somewhat a taco snob. Not those fancy cross-genre tacos that mix something up and call it "fusion" but just a simple taco from a taco stand in Los Angeles made with tortillas (must be two), meat, sauce, onion, and cilantro/lime. This reminded me a lot of that. A.simple.taco but bursting with character and flavor (Sabor). My go to meats are Lengua and Al Pastor. Both didn't disappoint. Inside might be a bit grimy for you pinky up while sipping coffee type but it's not filthy. Decor is typical and down to earth. These places typically make the best food! I can see coming here after a few late night brews with friends and pigging out.
google avatar

Mary K.

Yelp
Solid, simple, tasty fare. Did I mention inexpensive to boot? All you need to do is pull over on Lake St, throw a few bucks at them, and you're good to go in a few minutes.

Julie K.

Yelp
Food from this place is LEGIT! Legit, I say! My honey and I shared a quesadilla, burrito, and some tacos. SO DANG GOOD! We stopped several times while eating to comment on how great the food was. We will def be ordering many more times from them and telling everyone we know that Taco Taxi is the shit!
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Overpriced, okay tasting Mexican food. The Birria is awesome, super flavorful. The tacos also very good. The rest of the food we had was okay - a chicken burrito and steak quesadilla. The quesadilla came with rice and beans which I was very excited for but the rice was dry and the beans tasted like they were canned. For the price, I would have expected better food.
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Look here people. If you are reading this review, you need to get your tail over to Taco Taxi. This place is legit and off the chain! I'm from Brooklyn and we get a lot of good Mexican food out there and this place helps fill the void in my heart and stomach whenever I dream of good Mexican food. You know a Mexican joint is legit when they got bars on the window, hired security after like 10pm, people behind the counter who don't speak very good English, and the menu is written on the wall in Spanish. I've gotten tacos, burritos, horchata, and menudo here before and.. you ever roll your eyes back into your head whenever you eat something good? Well mornings after I eat here, my eyeballs are sore. I always get either lengua or cabesa for meat because I like to eat weird things but the meat is succulent every single time and their homemade salsa is refreshing and pleasantly spicy. Their horchata is freshly milked from a unicorn. It's also extremely refreshing, not too thick/sweet/dense and goes down way too smooth. Don't get me started on their menudo though. Beef tripe stewed in an a bright orange broth served with sides of warmed tortillas, onions and cilantro!! The Lord can continue to bless this place because I don't think this place is going out of business anytime soon. Do be careful at night though. The neighborhood isn't great past evening and if you're a pretty brunette wearing Uggs with a Pumpkin Spice Latte in hand skipping down the street past 10pm, you'll probably get targeted. What you need to do is dump that PSL and come in for a Horchata and just wait till dawn before you go home. Side note, Taco Taxi is open till 1am and in a city where most restaurants close at 5pm on a Sunday, this restaurant becomes a treasure. So please, revert those late night Taco Bell cravings and come here instead...
google avatar

Kara R.

Yelp
Pretty darn good. Shells soft, fresh, hot. If you want quick authentic street tacos, this place is it. I had Pastor and Americano chicken. I have had better meat; however, this was amazingly fresh and for the most part on point.
google avatar

Katy F.

Yelp
I love La Poblanita, but wanted to find a new authentic and dive like Mexican restaurant tonight with my brother who bikes from downtown. I parked at the Global Market and walked East on Lake until I got to Taxi Taco. My $2 pork Mexican Taco was awesome! My bro loved the variety of protein options. We also both got burritos. I was accidentally overcharged, but didn't mind and let it go. I'm sure I was confusing when I asked for 2 types of meat evenly divided.
google avatar

Dain K.

Yelp
Seriously one of the most authentic taco joints in the city, and crazy delicious. Much more 'adventurous' with their meats than most places, i.e. if you order the Barbacoa or Lengua, expect to be plucking out veins and membrane. This isn't a bad thing, it's better to have a relationship with what's on your plate, and interacting with it, need be. The taste goes MILES for it. Leaving all that fat in and just letting it be real Mexican food is a massive part of why I always hit the counter more than once. You'll leave full and happy every time you eat here. I don't love the styrofoam plates and cramped atmosphere, but I can't take it down a star, because the tacos are really THAT good.
google avatar

Scyenna B.

Yelp
While at a weeklong conference and eating at the same places, this place was a delicious find I would not have found without locals. Always a little apprehensive about trying new Mexican restaurants (I've been disappointed before) I was happily surprised. I chose 3 asada tacos, thinking I may have overdone it, but they were the perfect size. Along with the hot sauce, I could've easily made 6 tacos out of this. My eating companions got other bit menu items, the burritos, and they loved them as well. The size of the burritos would have fed me for 2 meals. It was a short distance from our hotel, but with public transportation, I could've hopped a bus to get back here. We also lucked out on the parking. A spot opened up right in front, so we didn't have to search for street parking.
google avatar

Kedar D.

Yelp
I'm not feeling it. I had some veggie tacos here, but was unimpressed, especially compared to what you can get at Pineda Tacos (or even Chipotle, for that matter). For one thing, Taco Taxi doesn't have avocado. What?! A Mexican restaurant without avocado is simply absurd. Moreover, for vegans, avocado becomes the center point of a Mexican meal (unless you can find a place with tofu or seitan or mock chicken, but that almost never happens). Second, the salsa they gave me wasn't good. It was too liquid-y and had almost no zing to it. Third, the cashier couldn't answer my questions about the ingredients (i.e. are the beans cooked in lard? is the rice cooked in chicken broth?), even though I asked in Spanish. And my Spanish is pretty good. The cashier simply didn't know any details about the food they serve, which is always worrisome. Fourth, there's no explicitly vegetarian food on the menu, which is always a hassle, as it means you have to ask a million questions and get something constructed from scratch for you. Also, the place seems heavy on the use of sour cream and cheese, which hints at a lack of sophistication in their cooking style. I like that Taco Taxi is open late. Otherwise, I'd rather go to Pineda Tacos down the road.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Friendly staff and cooks! Their menu is small, but the food is phenomenal! I've never waited more than 10 minutes for my food. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is fun. They always have music playing! I could eat their tacos all day, every day. As I'm writing this review... I'm craving their tacos now. Ok, gotta go! Time for some tacos!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
I am so happy that we came here on the taco crawl! I don't know that I would have ever stopped in otherwise. What a shame that would have been. The space is nothing fancy. It is a counter and a few Formica tables. The food is inexpensive and fantastic though! I went with Ashley F's recommendation for sopes con pollo (yes, I realize it was a "taco" crawl). So yummy! The sopes were nice and fresh. The chicken was tender and nicely seasoned. Lettuce, tomato, sour cream, onions and the tastiest salsa topped it off. Two of them were under $4. Deal of the day! I agree with Sarah P, I wish there was beer but I guess that can be fixed by utilizing the "taxi" part of the establishment. I just don't know how I could eat $15 worth!
