The 15 Best Restaurants in Missoula, Home of the University of Montana | Eater

"With its drool-worthy case of imported meats, cheeses, and antipasti, Tagliare is a dream for anyone craving a taste of Italy. The original shop remains on Wyoming Street, and the business has expanded with a new location near the University of Montana campus, making the deli’s face-size sandwiches accessible to hungry college students. Partnering with local bakery Le Petit Outre, Tagliare offers about 20 sandwiches, including vegetarian choices and the option to build your own. Before you leave, don’t forget to look through the shelves of pickled vegetables, sweet wafers, imported wines, and other goodies." - Lotus Porte-Moyel

Wow... this place was so good. I was sad I went here on my last day in Missoula because I definitely would have gone back, maybe multiple times. I got the Cure which is a simple turkey sandwich. It was packed with flavor and the quality of the meat was so good. My friend got the Sublime, and she really enjoyed it. The bread was delicious and the perfect texture. It wasn't too crisp, but it also didn't get soggy. Really great price for a huge, delicious sandwich. I'd recommend ordering online before you get there since it gets pretty busy. Service was fast even though there were a lot of people there. Staff was friendly. They had a fun selection of drinks and other imported Italian treats and food.

Google
Quality Ingredients, from the bread, meat and all their delicious spreads oils and vinegar that get that sandwich swimming in flavor. YUM!!! I'm kinda picky about sandwiches 🥪 because I feel like I can make that thing at home and save a buck, but hands down, I would be pressed hard to duplicate this deliciousness. 😉 Good stuff you gotta try it. Not many places to sit in the winter but on a summer day or fall, take that grat bite outside and enjoy.

Google
Tagliare Delicatessen is hands down one of the best spots in Missoula for an incredible sandwich! Every time I visit, the ingredients are fresh, the flavors are bold, and the service is friendly and fast. You can really tell they care about quality — the bread is always perfect, the meats and cheeses are top-notch, and the unique sandwich combinations are so creative. The Queen is my personal favorite — it’s always the perfect balance of flavors, and I can never get enough! 😍 Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or picking something up for later, Tagliare never disappoints. The atmosphere is cozy and laid-back, and the staff always makes you feel welcome. If you're in Missoula and craving a truly great deli experience, this is the place to go. Highly recommend!

Google
yuuuummm. got the journey: i don't think i like smoked salmon but i think it was probably good for people who like that. the sublime was YUMMY ! and the inside was cutie with those colorful tinned fish things and other random european stuff i dont even know. NO INDOOR SEATING by the way. some outdoor seats

Google
We don't live in Missoula, but every time we're there, we either eat at Tagliare or grab one for the road. The best sandwiches in the state, hands down.

Google
One of the best sandwiches I’ve eaten! The Sublime is where it’s at! My mom ordered the Pixie and loved it too. There’s only two small tables outside to eat at but this is definitely a must try.

Google
This place deserves every single 5-star review on here. The ingredients are all fresh, the sandwiches are delicious, and the price is unbeatable—you can get one of the best sandwiches you’ve ever had for the same price as something from Jimmy John’s. There’s a reason why it’s been featured in so many “best of” lists. The wait can get a little long during lunch rushes, especially if you just walk up. But their mobile ordering is convenient and has very accurate estimates of when your food will be ready. Really, the only downside is something completely out of their control: the parking lot. According to local legend, the parking lot was designed in 1931 by a local man who saw a picture of a car once, and afterward believed all cars to be only five inches long because that’s how big they were on the photo paper. The parking lot was paved on unhallowed ground and later became the inspiration for the movies “Christine” and “Titanic”. The parking lot is the only piece of automotive-related engineering to be specifically mentioned by name and banned by both the Geneva Convention and the UN Human Rights Council. The parking lot is known to insurance agents as “Eric Clapton” due to how much Fender bending happens there. The only positive review of the parking lot on record came from the little-known writer Joey Turnaround, author of the book “Crank that Wheel Hard: The Subtle Beauty of the 38-point Parking Job”. Definitely check it out, just be prepared to park a couple blocks away and walk if the lot is full. And it is a counter service only place, so there’s really no seating to speak of aside from a couple tables outside. But everything on the menu is fantastic and well worth a visit. It’s a real gift to have such an authentic European-style deli in town. Love these guys!

Google
One of the most flavorful sandwiches I’ve ever had! High quality ingredients, super friendly staff and a wide variety of additional imported products.

Yelp
This continues to be one of my go-to places when in the area. Their sandwiches are the best with the most tasty of breads. I always order the Doobie Brothers and hubs gets the Megadeath. We always have to build in an opportunity to pick up a sandwich. When you have a place like this in your area, why would you get a sandwich anywhere else?

Yelp
New Jerseyans recommended Tagliare and that was good enough for us. They were spot on and led us to a delicious lunch. All the sandwiches are named for Bands, which was an added kick. We ordered a Zeppelin (turkey, dry salami, pastrami, provolone, greens, balsamic marinated onions and oil & vinegar) and Pretenders (fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and marinated onions). My Pretenders was scrumptious; a caprese that had gone to college. It was generous, the fresh mozzarella was creamy but it was a little heavy on the balsamic dressing, or maybe it was the marinated onions. It was so good, we may come back tomorrow! Yelpers, all is forgiven. Tagliare more than makes up for our nightmare breakfast elsewhere (PPP).

Yelp
Solid, excellent sandwich. We ordered online, which was easy, and the food was ready when we showed up and stored in a fridge so it didn't get warm. A few other people we were eating with did not order online but it didn't take them too long to get their sandwiches, despite the long line. All sandwiches - and there are many - are named after bands. I had the Doobie Brother, which was turkey, fresh walnut pesto, smoked mozzarella and piquillo peppers. Everything was very well proportioned with no flavor dominating any other flavor - each bite was satisfying. The bread was also amazing. No seating inside the place so make sure you have somewhere to go... not hard to do in Missoula.

Yelp
I cannot rave about this place enough. The food here is Sublime. I got the Beach Boy and I'll never try another sandwich. It has ruined me for all other sandwiches. It is so good and comes with turkey, bacon, swiss, spicy garlic aioli, avocado spread, red onion, tomatoes, greens. They even add their attention to detail when they're wrapping the sandwich. They actually wrapped the napkins in the paper. So smart, it keeps everything together. Such a cute place and I make sure to always go back when I'm in Missoula.

Yelp
Found this place and when I saw the line out the door I knew is find deliciousness! Every sandwich was more appealing than the next. I rolled in a stranger and left meeting many folks so happy living in Missoula.

Yelp
Tagliare Delicatessen is a small deli in the heart of Missoula, Montana. The deli is known for its creative and delicious sandwiches named after rock bands. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is fun and funky. The sandwiches at Tagliare Delicatessen are made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The bread is baked fresh daily by Le Petit Outre, and the meats and cheeses are imported. The sandwiches are all made to order so that you can customize your sandwich to your liking. Some of the sandwiches we tried at Tagliare Delicatessen include the Zeppelin (turkey, dry salami, pastrami, provolone, greens, balsamic marinated onions and oil & vinegar), the Megadeath (ham, finocchiona, hot sopressata, pepperoni, hot cappicola, smoked mozzarella, pepperoncinis, tomatoes and "feisty slaw"), the Kiss (prosciutto, provolone, fig & walnut chutney, arugula and olive oil), and the Cure (turkey, sharp white cheddar cheese, greens, tomatoes, and mustard vinaigrette). All of which were amazing. In addition to sandwiches, Tagliare Delicatessen also offers a variety of other items, such as salads, soups, and charcuterie boards. They also have a small selection of imported wines and beers. The deli is small and can get crowded, so it's best to avoid going during peak hours. The deli also has no bathroom, so be sure to go before you go. Overall, Tagliare Delicatessen is a great place to go for a delicious and satisfying sandwich. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere is fun and funky, and the sandwiches are made with fresh, high-quality ingredients.

Yelp
Awesome sandwiches!! We ordered online with a number of variations for the kids and they caught them all.

Yelp
10/10 stars!!! Impressed with this little gem in Missoula. My family of 4 all had different sandwiches and they were all incredible. I had the Sublime and I must say -- it is the best sandwich I've ever had in my life. I live in Southern California and we have plenty of delicatessens/sandwich shops , but this was far superior. I am so impressed and will be returning in the future! They also have a great selection of Italian wines, cookies, and other items.
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
Megadeath I will a say no more. Honestly an absolutely fabulous sandwich. If I lived here I would eat here all the time. My wife had the beach boy and loved it. Check it out.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
You are out of bread and primarily a sandwich shop??? An opportunity to get creative and send someone to go get some. I have to laugh because it's absurd. And so much SASS!

Kathleen T.

Yelp
We stopped here on a road trip on our way through Missoula. The sandwiches were excellent, perfect deli sandwiches, service was friendly and quick. The menu is extremely interesting, think I could have ordered any of them and been very happy. The ONLY reason I gave it less than five stars is there is really no place to eat or any restroom facilities for customers. When you are traveling, both of those are important so we had to make an extra stop and find restrooms and eat in the car as we traveled. If those two things are not important to you, please get your sandwich here, so excellent!
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
10/10 but you probably already knew that!! Don't get a sandwich with the spicy garlic spread unless you aren't kissing anyone for several hours after (or get it anyway....it's so worth it). Super fresh and great quality ingredients!
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Let's be clear this is not Subway. But still in my head I thought a six inch sandwich from Tagliare would be like a Subway. Was I wrong! More like a 4x6 ciabatta roll with plenty of "insides." Went with the Mega and the Sublime - both were fantastic and I'd order them again - except I'd want to try some menu items. Friendly service. Helpful. Ambiance? Well, it's more or an order-to-go place. By the way, they do make meat and cheese plates. Not on menu - more of a custom job.

Elaine P.

Yelp
I would say it's the best sandwich ever but then there are more than one 'best' sandwiches on their menu... Excellent vibe, spot on service every time and Holy Hanna... incredibly delicious food!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered their famous number one sandwich Megadeath since this is our first visit Clerk said Beach Boy and Sublime also popular.....his personal favorite is Kiss Not a lot of meat , spicy. Way too much olive oil I didn't hate it but I'd order something else next time
google avatar

Isaac S.

Yelp
Best deli in Missoula. No question. The fact that all sandwiches are based off 80's bands is a perk. Megadeath is unreal good. Olive tempanade on the "Clash" is amazing. Pro tip: they have a secret kids menu and order from the app to avoid line. Get. The. Pickle. Plus it's next to Grizzly Grovery and El Diablo if it's too busy so there are back up options if it's too busy.
google avatar

Hank H.

Yelp
Went in and grabbed the Megadeth and Cheap Trick sandwiches last night. Both of the sandwiches were great, you can taste the freshness in the ingredients. The service was fast and very friendly. Definitely worth a check if you like this style of sandwiches.
google avatar

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Best sandwich I've had in the U.S.! Creative options with playful names and great staff. If you are in Missoula, this is a "must go" lunch!
google avatar

Nicki M.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch for my family on a road trip. They did a custom kid sandwich for one of my daughters who didn't see anything she liked on the menu. The person who helped us was super present and engaged (took the time to recommend some nearby parks we could eat at and stretch our legs), the sandwiches were amazing (I loved the little detail of the napkins wrapped right in with the sandwich paper). Oh don't forget the pickles! Great spot!
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Comical 1 and 2 star reviews here on Yelp. Sounds like most of those reviews would rather have an $8-9 Subway sandwich rather than a $10-12 Tagliare sandwich! Great sandwiches with quality ingredients! I had the Queen heated with a little mayo added. Awesome flavor and well worth the price for the size! Only one kind of bread maybe, but a very good rustic Italian bread that is a bit crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside (and doesn't kill the roof of your mouth)! Anyway...do not listen to the 1-2 star reviews. Certainly there are always instances of a bad meal or of bad service...but overall this place is legit!!
google avatar

Kari Z.

Yelp
I have been to both locations and the employees are so friendly and fast! The sandwiches are the best, I highly recommend beach boy!!! So good. I just wish you could eat inside. Neither location has indoor tables, a few outdoor but they are taken when weather is nice. Still, totally worth taking to go
google avatar

Tsu N.

Yelp
Had the Beach sandwich. Yum-o. Shared halfsies and it was more than enough. The spicy aioli with guac hit the spot. Onward to WA... don't let the long lines fool you. We got our wich within 10 minutes. Thanks for the quick turnaround. They had some great Italian delicatessen that make amazing gifts.
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
It is a deli, a good deli. Every time I come into town, I eat here at least once...twice. Big, fully filled sandwiches made right there for you. The people are nice and I never seem to wait too long. I usually grab a Megadeath and eat it for 2 meals. I really like this place.
google avatar

Kal C.

Yelp
Super delicious sandwiches, named after rock bands. We shared our sandwiches, and all were excellent. On a nice day, it's a perfect spot to pick up lunch and some fridge/pantry staples, and eat outside. They have a good selection of wines, and we grabbed a bottle to share. Based on how busy it was, we were surprised how quickly our food was ready.

George D.

Yelp
Awesome sandwiches!! Get extra napkins-no joke! Had the Megadeth, heaven. You'll have to eat outside or take it to go is about only complaint
google avatar

Kerry N.

Yelp
Sooooooo good everything is amazing and you can't go wrong! You have to go back to try something new and be impressed all over again! Just a note that many of them do have kick so read the ingredients and modify if needed
google avatar

Christy S.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches! We stopped for lunch on our way through Missoula and we will definitely be back. Super fresh bread, wonderful combinations. The Sublime was a favorite but they were all good. The dill pickle was also delish. They also have a nice little selection of olive oils, vindicate, spreads and more.
google avatar

Marisa M.

Yelp
Probably my favorite place to grab a bite to eat in Missoula! The sandwiches are out of this world. I've tried about half of the menu at this point and there is really not a wrong choice when it comes to picking a sandwich here. 12/10 stars for Tagliare!
google avatar

Carole D.

Yelp
A favorite stop for picnic fare! No indoor seating and very limited patio dining. Every sandwich is delicious!
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
Super tasty sandwich shop. We really enjoyed this place! We ordered 3 different ones and all were flavored nicely and you can tell made with quality ingredients.
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. The bread was wonderful and the portions large. Also the choices were inventive.
google avatar

Zach J.

Yelp
My wife and I honestly didn't think we could like a sandwich as much as when we went here! I don't remember what sandwich we got, but it tasted so complex. Like there were 2 types of cheeses, 3 types of meats, and a number of different sauces. The bread was perfect as well. No ingredient overpowered the other. A perfect blend of flavors! If you're not sure what you're hungry for and would like to try something a little different, definitely give this place a try.
google avatar

George T.

Yelp
Amazing. Really that simple. The sandwiches are tasty and filling. Bring your appetite! Only seating is outside so take it on the go. Top shelf!
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Tagliare has some great sandwiches! They are big, filling, and always packed full of quality ingredients. Some of the sauces and dressings they use on them can be a little overpowering, but if you are someone who enjoys intense flavors then you will probably like them. I like bread to be softer on a sandwich, but their bread is more on the hard side which can make it a hassle to eat the sandwich without everything slipping out. Prices for sandwiches range from $9.50-$11.95 and are definitely well worth it. You can taste the quality of the ingredients when you bite into their sandwiches. If you have yet to try them out, I suggest taking a look at their online menu before making a trip there. The restaurant itself doesn't have a dine-in option so be prepared to take it to-go.
google avatar

Sherry W.

Yelp
WOW. This might be the best sandwich shop I have ever been to and I never thought I'd find it stopping for gas in Missoula, MT on a cross-country road trip. The deli has eclectic and unique vibes and also is like a mini gourmet Italian grocery store! I couldn't resist picking up some unique pastas and sauces, along with 2 sandwiches - the beach boy and the megadeath, and WOW, probably the best sandwiches I have ever had. They're both so flavorful and fresh, and perfectly spicy. I wish I could get this regularly in Seattle and didn't have to drive 500 miles to get it haha.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, lots of options, friendly staff, and other deli items needed for home use.
google avatar

Priscilla E.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE sandwiches. I'll need to go back so I can try all of them. No indoor seating but there are a few tables outside.

Russell H.

Yelp
Excellent food. Helpful service the very best sandwich Turkey Sandwich was the best I've ever had

Katie R.

Yelp
We were on a business trip and searched trusty yelp and also googled the best places to eat in Missoula. This was on more than a few food bloggers top eats. The sandwiches looked amazing so we gave it a try. I have no words for how fresh and delicious our sandwiches were. The bread was soft but crisp and chewy. The beach boy was spicy but delicious in every way. I will be dreaming of this sandwich and I'm so sad I won't be able to come here on a regular basis. The guy behind the counter was so helpful, friendly, and patient. This place deserves all the acknowledgment and stars! If I'm ever back in Missoula this will definitely be the first place I go to eat.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
It's been three months since I was in Missoula, and I have been thinking about the Megadeth sandwich every day since then. It was and probably forever will be the best sandwich -- nay, the best dish -- I've ever had in my life. I get tears in my eyes just thinking about it. The spice level is perfect. The ratio of meat to cheese to veggies to bread is masterful. The bread is pillowy soft in the middle and crunchy on the outside. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, think about Gollum's obsession with the One Ring. That's how much I love this sandwich. It is precious to me. I may even book a flight soon just so I can have it again.
google avatar

Allan B.

Yelp
Wow!! One of the best sandwiches I've ever had! Easy to order great food, and the service is top notch! If you're looking for a great sandwich, better stop in!
google avatar

Walter H.

Yelp
Found this gem located in a shopping center on our way through Missoula. I ordered the Beach Boy: turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, greens, red onion, avocado spread and spicy garlic aioli. I got my sandwich minus the red onions and should have asked for extra aioli. Tagliare offers a couple different types of bread, I chose the one that could get grilled. It had everything I could ask for in a sandwich and of course it taste better with a good bevy to wash it down.

Jake M.

Yelp
I would rather die a thousand deaths than live another day on this planet without a Tagliare sub. 'Megadeth' and 'Sublime' were unreal.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE! Let's get real, this restaurant can literally put anything in front of me and I will absolutely love it. I'm not exaggerating, they could put bread with butter in front of me and somehow in someway Tagliare makes it taste like it was from the heavens, blessed by a goddess, shipped from Italy, and wrapped precisely with the most immaculate and perfect precision. Everything about this place is to die for. Just take my money.

Lila E.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. The sandwiches are always amazing. The service is efficient with friendly staff. I've lived all over and this is one of my top places I've ever been to for sandwiches. Only complaint is recently I've noticed less sauce being added to the sandwiches--I miss when it was more sauced up! Regardless, still a favorite. Just miss the saucey sandwiches lol.
google avatar

Laurie P.

Yelp
Too big for me but my turkey sandwich was great! Next time I'll pass on the hot sauce and maybe get a half san. Very fresh very tasty ingredients and nice chewy bread
google avatar

Stephen D.

Yelp
Picked up sandwiches to go. I had the megadeath, and it was super good. Very high quality ingredients all around and lots of flavor. Looking forward to trying out more items on the menu.
google avatar

Isabel W.

Yelp
AMAZING. actually so good. picked up sandwiches and ate them at the top of our hike and they held up well! extremely flavorful with homemade sauces/condiments & fresh ingredients. the bread was also top notch. haven't stopped thinking about this sandwich since i got it tbh - i got the pixie which was super vinegary and punchy and fresh, and my friend got the sublime which was such a classic italian deli combo done well. will be returning soon for sure!

Kerry C.

Yelp
Love this place! if not the best sandwich place in Missoula!!' My personal favorite is the Cheap Trick!
google avatar

Margaret M.

Yelp
Ordered lunch for 8. Sandwiches are big, fresh and the bread is delish. Cookies are a nice ending. Staff was courteous and order was ready on time.
