16 Places to Dine Near UC San Diego

"Bringing Middle Eastern shawarma and other street foods to campus, this is the second location for a popular Kearny Mesa lunch spot. Bestsellers include the Esquire pita with chicken shawarma, fries, pickled vegetables, garlic sauce, and sriracha-tahini sauce and the Tahini Fries topped with feta, peppers, garlic sauce, and tahini. There’s also steak shawarma, falafel, fried halloumi cheese sticks with fig jam, and the option to build your own meal with pita, salad, or rice as a base and the protein of your choice." - Marie Tutko

Upon walking in, we were greeted immediately and welcomed. All staff were extremely friendly throughout the whole experience, and even gave us some free things to sample. The hummus had incredible flavor and texture and the pita was fluffy.

Google
Gotta be the nicest place on campus, I walked in and was immediately showered with big welcomes from the kitchen. Nothing about their cooking is even close to subpar, considering you can watch them make some of the tastiest food in ucsd right in front of you from behind the counter. Everyone was clearly happy to be there and extremely chill, happy to give suggestions and cook up heavenly halal. the chefs obviously made their food with effort and passion as opposed to following a recipe like some strip mall fast food bloc, not to mention their luxury soda fountain. I could come back over and over again for one of those drinks on their own. Every cent of the $15 i spent on my chicken shawarma was worth it, people who complain about the price at this place clearly just don't like enjoying good food and should go eat 3 dollar frozen-then-microwaved beef patties at their local supercommerical burger joint instead of wasting Tahini's time with their complaint reviews. 12/10 is an understatement. edit: place is so dam good i had to come back and add to my review because i feel like i lowballed them. It took less than 5 visits for some of the staff to already recognise me by face and name, these guys clearly cook for people and not for paychecks. Even though I came in late tonight the remaining guys were still more than happy to to handle my order, and even threw in a side on the house. i legitimately believe i've almost never been to a more inviting place to eat in my life, if you don't like this place you seriously have to get checked at a doctor.

I just had the BEST falafel of my life at Tahini. No joke. It was super tasty & moist, not dry. Now I’ll never want to eat a falafel anywhere else. And, shout out to the lovely staff!

Google
I haven’t eaten at this location yet but I ordered delivery a few times. I am in love with this food!! One of my favorite creations is rice, chicken, siracha tahini sauce; garlic sauce, pickled cucumber, pickled beet, red onion and parsley mix. It’s just too delicious for words ;) The combination possibilities are endless too! This place has quickly become one of my all time favorite restaurants!

Google
Food is solid. This is a place I frequent if I decide to eat out on campus. The space is a little crowded to order but there’s limitations on what they can do with that space, I’m sure. It’s nice there’s a sink to wash your hands at the front before eating.

Google
My favorite restaurant: the food is delicious, and I have took almost all my friends come here. Highly recommended pita sandwich, and the drinks here is also amazing.❤️😎

Google
Absolutely the best middle eastern food I have had in SD!! Build your own so it makes it perfect for picky eaters 🤣

Google
Love this place!! Great options and the service is super good. Shoutout to Abdul at the pickup counter for being so friendly and taking the service above and beyond!! Give this guy a raise.

Yelp
I work on campus at UCSD and walked by Tahini in early January 2023 before classes started. The fresh pita bread caught my eye. Wow. Everything they have is amazing. I usually get the falafel bowl with a side of fries. I also love all of the sauces. I usually order ahead online and pick up during my lunch break. It's also full Halal for anyone looking for this option while eating on campus. When I need to buy lunch, this is one of my favorite places on campus to eat at. Everything is made fresh and all the people working have been super friendly and helpful. There are kiosks as you walk in where you can order in addition to two registers. Nowhere to eat inside but plenty of places in the area to eat.

Yelp
Located on the UC San Diego campus, Tahini is a casual place to grab a bite. They had items such as Pitas and bowls. I decided to get one of the set menu items instead of a build your own meals. Pros: -good food -they accept triton cash -you can place an order with their staff or place your order on one of their self serve digital stations Cons: -no seating indoors -inside is very narrow, so it can be difficult to get your beverage when a bunch of people are waiting for their order

Yelp
Great spot for quick Mediterranean food at UCSD. The service is fast and the food is delicious. I recommend building your own meal as there are plenty of options. My only gripe is that the restaurant itself is tiny but you can wait outside and they'll call your order on the speaker!

Yelp
This location is on the UCSD campus. We were looking for a spot on our way from San Diego airport to Legoland and ended up here not realizing it's on campus. Being on campus means that there's a 5min walk from parking to this location. It's a small location with outdoor tables, but no indoor seating. Both the beef and chicken shawarma were delicious. The fries were also really good. Crunchy on the outside and very light, airy inside. Both bowls and sandwiches were delicious. Cucumber salad was very fresh and a nice accompaniment to the sandwich.

Yelp
I went to tahini with one of my friends and we were blown away with how unique yet tasteful the menu items were. The pita chips were one of my favorite dishes and second would be the delicious ESQUIRE. Can't wait to come back!! What we ordered: FALAFEL THE ESQUIRE PITA CHIPS HALLOUMI CHEESE STIX TAHINI FRIES SALAD BOWL WITH CHICKEN SHAWARMA

Yelp
10/10 the best authentic food . My kids love the rice bowls & French fries on the side. I love the rice bowls my self. It's definitely a fulling and worth my money. Customer service is always 10/10 & I would always highly recommend everyone trying it out. Also family friendly experience.

Yelp
Delicious middle eastern food with generous portions. My go to is the hummus bowl with half chicken and half beef. I highly recommend it

Sara B.

Yelp
Their customer service is superb, I was given two free falafels with extra tahini sauce on the side with my order. Also love the restaurant's decor and pretty lights! Can't forget the amazing food too :)

Yelp
Food is excellent, it's the small portion size which keeps it from getting five stars.

Yelp
I like the vibe of the place. It's very vibrant and the sink in the front to wash hands, very clean. The food is meh, comparable to Cava but Cava is yummier and I think cheaper. The flow of the space is not the best when waiting for food, it's awkward to know where to stand.

Elena Z.

Yelp
Came for dinner and the food was terrible! Cold, bland. Not worth the price. I would definitely not recommend this place! Would rather go to Pita 22 or Panini Kabob Grille in Del Mar.

Yelp
as a student at ucsd, this place has provided amazing & filling meals at an affordable price (especially in comparison to the food at UCSD). highly recommend and can't wait to go back! parking might be tricky if you're not already at the campus but that is the university's fault.

Yelp
Hot fresh baked pitas, amazing tahini sauces, fresh chopped vegetables, and tasty toasted almonds on top. The food is just as tasty as the original location. It's great to have this new Tahini location open on the UCSD campus. Inside the entry door there is a high-tech Dyson wash and dry integrated sink to allow for quick hand washing before you eat. There also is a multi-level parking structure below the building. The location is perhaps better described as the middle of the north/south section of Muir College Drive walkway on the east side of the building structure. You could say Tahini is low-key hiding between Copa Vida and Showa Ramen, which have more prominent signs on the building corners.

Cristina T.

Yelp
One of the best spots to eat at on the ucsd campus! Very friendly staff always greeted with a smile when ordering and picking up food. Nice spot near 6 college. Highly recommend

Hannah U.

Yelp
So good! My favorite place to eat on campus, everyone is so nice and the food is so good!

Lara R.

Yelp
Delicious fries! I crave them daily. Nice and hot. I order them a la carte and it is only $3.50.

Dan R.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal service! They've gotten some people coming only to hate- IGNORE THOSE REVIEWS! The food here tasted unique and DELICIOUS! The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, and the blonde lady at the cashier was very friendly and make my experience enjoyable with her customer oriented attitude !

Lauren S.

Yelp
Certainly one of my preferred spots on campus. Their falafel and halloumi cheese are exceptional (those are the only items I've sampled thus far). I highly recommend the garlic sauce!

Manalle A.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE! My favorite middle eastern place is now open on campus! And its just the same as when you have it at their other location And such a cute spot too! Make sure to check out the amazing artwork piece that they have

Nicole B.

Yelp
Fresh, healthy and delicious!!! The service is always amazing! Love Tahini and I love that they have a location on campus!

Yelp
A very unique flavor. It's either you love it or hate it. We ordered the rice bowl with beef gyro and fries.

Wally N.

Yelp
10!10!10!10! Nothing but amazing quality food and incredible customer service. I really feel like I was being taken care of while ordering. Since it was my first time I wasn't so sure what to get but a young man working at the front counter named Assad recommended the Esquire pita which absolutely blew my mind! Also got the opportunity to meet the owners Osama and Moody, who are incredibly genuine people. Will definitely be coming back every time I get the chance!

Coby R.

Yelp
Tahini is quick, delicious, and has high quality food. Whenever I go out with friends and I pick the place we eat, it's always Tahini

Serdar A.

Yelp
Clean place, healthy options. Love their falafel. Friendly service. I wish they have one in Del Mar area.

Sophia T.

Yelp
I come here all the time! The flavors are great and the ordering system is very user friendly. I usually get the pita and customize it. It is a little pricy for what it is though

Trevor F.

Yelp
Good food I enjoyed the chicken shawarma. I definitely recommend for students who want a quick bite to eat.
