The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Oak Park, Michigan | Eater Detroit

"Takeout sushi favorite Tai Fai does a steady business throughout the week, preparing big platters filled with eel avocado rolls, crispy Spider Rolls with soft shell crab, and spicy tuna. The menu runs the gamut from Japanese teriyaki udon to American Chinese standards like lo-mein, but, trust us, the affordable sushi is the real treat." - Serena Maria Daniels

Metro Detroit’s 12 Best Sushi Bars | Eater Detroit

"For strictly takeout sushi, turn to pan-Asian carryout restaurant Tai Fai in Oak Park. The restaurant’s rolls, nigiri, and sashimi are made-to-order at affordable prices. Definitely call ahead or expect to wait a few minutes for a meal. It’s nearly always busy (for good reason)." - Eater Staff

This sushi spot is a hidden gem. It sits in a tight spot but the sushi rolls are all amazingly good. Customer service was great and ordering online or calling in to place an order was super convenient. They also do cater trays as well. Definitely recommend.

Google
Love the food! Always fresh and the sushi is amazing. They have lunch prices deals with many options and my plate of food is always full n it’s so much I can share with a family member or two I been going here for a couple of years now and they’re always welcoming and friendly.

Food Gala

Google
I’ve only been here once and tried three dishes, so my review is based solely on those. I ordered the veggie lo mein, and I’m not sure why they left so much liquid in the box—I couldn’t tell if I ordered noodles or noodle soup. They had to wrap it four times in saran wrap, and I’m not joking—I wish I had taken a photo before unwrapping it. My boyfriend got the sesame chicken with fried rice. The fried rice tasted a bit old, but everything else was okay. The best thing was the baked avocado—definitely the highlight of the meal. This is one of those places where the food looks great, but looks can be deceiving.

Google
My sushi was made to order, I requested non spicy and it was so delicious and fresh. The service was fast and the staff was really attentive. I will definitely be back soon.

Google
Reasonably good sushi. Actually much better quality than a lot of more expensive places in Birmingham. Just one problem: they sneak cream cheese into almost every dish, and the menu doesn't always tell you it is in the dish, as in the case of their eel roll. If there are allergens in a dishes, it should be plainly visible on the menu, so the customers knows in advance, prior to ordering. Dairy sensitivity is more widespread than some people assume. This is more of a Japanese/American flavor fusion, with all the dairy added, but the food is good. If there was less chance of accidentally ordering something with unwanted dairy in it, I would give it 5 stars. Their carryout is reasonably timely and the ingredients have a quick turnover rate and are fresh due to high sales volume. Not a sit down place.

Google
This is a really simple Korean restaurant. The menu is small but everything on it was really really good. We just stopped in to check it out and maybe split something small. It all looked good so we ordered 5 dishes and all were great. We ordered 1 miso soup and they brought out 5. Service was also extremely fast and on top of everything. My husband passed out a plate of dumplings and before he could find a spot to set the empty plate on the table they were already there to clear it. This might be our new easy go to date night.

Google
The sushi was delicious and the rolls were huge—I got full fast. Great quality and generous portions!

Google
This is my go-to place for quick dense asian food. I love their tofu sizzling green bean and crispy spicy chicken. I don't know what culture that type of fried meat comes from but whatever it is got it RIGHT, I can't recommend it enough and to me it overshadows the sushi on the menu. Never had any problems with the service too.

Yelp
Tai Fai is hands down our go to sushi spot! I've always liked sushi, but Tai Fai takes it to a whole new level. I don't think it's the most authentic sushi restaurant, (like a lot of over the top rolls, deep fried options, cream cheese additions), but it's pretty standard from what I've seen from sushi restaurants around metro Detroit. Some of my favorites are their sunshine morning roll, sumo roll, tai fai roll, spider roll, Ferndale roll, dancing eel roll, crunch roll, salmon nigiri, crab rangoons, and miso soup. Every friend I have told about this place ends up trying it and loving it as well. It's just a great spot, fresh food, and friendly staff. They don't have seating inside -- it's a pretty small area with just enough room for people to wait for their takeout orders -- but it's super easy to place your order online and pick it up. They also offer delivery through DoorDash. They also have other Asian dishes here aside from sushi, but I have a hard time branching out to try anything else when the sushi is crave-able! It's worth every bite.

Yelp
Wow, it's been a long time since I had my one and only experience here, and after seeing an ad for them, I was reminded of my previous good experience. It was SO GOOD!! I have pics of everything we got, but we got a good variety. Everything was such a good version of itself. The miso soup was fresh tasting and had a variety of flavors to it with the seaweed and green onions. The sweet and sour chicken was crispy, and the pineapple and carrots had awesome flavor to them. The fried rice has a tasty bbq flavor to them, where you can tell it was fried on a hibachi. Not much chicken in it, but this wasn't bothersome to us. My 4 year old ate the fried rice for the first time and said it's her favorite rice! The sizzling green beans were SO crunchy and had such a perfect, tasty sauce. Chicken was quality and sliced thin. The sushi knocked it out of the park for all the rolls. We can't wait to go back! It's not the closest but it's our official default.

Yelp
I ordered takeout while visiting the area on a Friday evening. I was able to place my order over the phone. The communication barrier was a little challenging given that you order by the food title versus a number. But after we got past this I was told my order would be ready in 15 minutes which surprised me given the fact that the parking lot had a lot of traffic of people entering in and out of the restaurant. Nevertheless, the food was ready very fast. The restaurant is only takeout and there is no dining room. You get a full view of the kitchen from the very small lobby. I was amazed with the number of people working in the restaurant given how small it is. But there had to be at least 10 people working in very tight quarters. When arrived to pickup my food it was found without incident I paid and quickly left. The parking can be a little tight. I felt like my car was close to being hit while someone was trying to back out of the lot. Now to the food: the presentation was AMAZING. The boxes that the sushi is presented in are beautiful. I've never seen anything like it for food service. The box alone makes it worth the experience of going. The food we order was really good. My dining companion had the Ferndale and Malibu rolls. I had the Philly and avocado role. We also had the curry vegetable dish. Everything was fresh and had great flavor. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I decided to try Tai Fai after seeing a few tik tok videos. It's located in a small strip mall and easy to overlook. I went on Saturday night and it was crowded. I'm glad I placed my order ahead of time because the orders were coming in fast. I ordered the crab meat wontons & spring rolls as my appetizer. Both were crunchy and full of flavor. I didn't care for the sauce that came with them but they really didn't need a sauce. The rolls are served in a beautiful box that makes you think of an upscale restaurant. I ordered the crunch roll and a red dragon roll. I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything tasted. I will be back and have already told my friends to give them a try.

Yelp
We food delivered, in excess of $60. Quality was terrible. Curry was supposed to be spicy but was just weak, mild, watery thin liquid covering lots of vegetables. Fried Rice was flavorless, and wet. Everything was cold when delivered. We will never order from here again.

Yelp
I haven't been this disappointed in a long time. Given the hype and rave reviews I was expecting something great. But the main dishes were worse than a mall food court. Sauces were overly sweet and gelatinous. The chicken was the cheapest kind of nugget that you can buy, where it's just chunks of chewy mystery parts smashed into a ball. The fried rice was burnt. My daughter said "it smells like a smoker's garage". I don't understand the appeal at all.

Vee C.

Yelp
The avocado bake is good. I saw this place pop up in my feeds a lot. I also looked at the Yelp reviews prior to coming. I was expecting the sushi rolls to come in the box that I'd seen everywhere. My order came in styrofoam containers. I normally don't write a review after trying a place once. I ordered quite a bit and that's why I've decided to write my review now. I will try ordering again to see if something else stands out.

Yelp
The wait for the food was on point. Their sesame chicken was delicious as well as their rolls. However, they combined rolls with other items in the order that were going to various people who were not dining together. When I placed the order I did state that it for 5 people, not once did they ask if it needed to be boxed separately. I have never had this issue before but it is something they should ask.
google avatar

Ari B.

Yelp
Talk about a meal! They never disappoint! I ordered take-out from our fav Thai spot while I was home visiting! I normally get the Thai Fai (phi) Roll but I decided on some new stuff! The Calzone Sushi was K!LLER & the Spicy Tempura Salmon & Shrimp Roll was the perfect compliment!!! My mom is always happy with her old faithful, Lo Mein lol. Though we ordered via DD, I know the service here to be amazing and fast! AND you can watch them roll sushi & prepare meals while you wait! They seem to have a great flow and the vibe is super chill! Cheers!

Roland L.

Yelp
Small cramped place. Not the best sushi, but at least it's close by. There are about 5 barstools total inside to sit on and most people are here to just pickup an order. About a 20min wait for an order.

Brandon R.

Yelp
This place is awesome. No idea why there's four stars but I have heard from people that work at yelp that yelp gives a bump up on reviews two places that pay them a subscription fee so I assume this is why
google avatar

Dee W.

Yelp
Amazing presentation, the food was just as good and the packaging. I did a take out order and I was beyond satisfied. I would definitely recommend
google avatar

Noor H.

Yelp
this is take out only no dine in options. It is super affordable and they have chinese, Thai and tons of sushi to choose from. They also have a party platter! Staff was nice and got out our order in less then 30 minutes . Highly recommend
google avatar

Tess S.

Yelp
I love their lunch specials (weekdays before 3pm). Food has always been fresh and ready when I get there- this joint is carry out only. Docking a star because it's good, but not the greatest and while I appreciate the large portions containers are often overfilled and wrapped in Saran. This is great for transport but kind of a pain and a mess when you get home. (Yay saucy plastic.)

Vivian O.

Yelp
the pad tai was the worst food I've ever had, waste of money threw it in the trash. I'll never order there again.
google avatar

Kris M.

Yelp
Oak park roll shrimp nigiri crab nigiri Seaweed Salad I had ordered more but the person on the phone I guess didn't hear me or something so that what I got. Food was ok didn't seem as fresh as it could be but love the size of their rolls maybe they just was having an off day

Jade L.

Yelp
This is hands down the best Chinese food in the area. Each time I've been here, the food was hot, fresh and just delicious. The general chicken is so flavorful and I love that that use veggies that aren't overcooked or overly saturated in sauce. This is always my go to when I visit here. As for the customer service, I called in my order and they told me it would be ready in 20 mins, but they actually had it ready in 15. Very fast and fresh

Bill H.

Yelp
Placed an online order through their website. Received a pickup time 30 min. after placing the order. Arrived at the pickup time and was informed it would be another 45 min. wait because they cannot control the ordering system and put in accurate times. Waited 1 hr 15 min before order was complete for a total of 1hr 45 min from order to pick up.
google avatar

Yvonne W.

Yelp
Always on point! Shrimp Tempura roll was fresh, and spring rolls and crab wonton so good! Good service for delivery with food still being hot and fresh.
google avatar

Fran P.

Yelp
Sushi is the best thing they have going on here. The spicy California roll is delicious. The tempura shrimp and salmon is my favorite roll. The sesame chicken is good but the rice lacks flavor. The fried rice served with the combo meals don't have any eggs or vegetables. It's just literally fried rice with whatever meat you get. Get the sushi. Its the best carry out sushi on this side of town.

Nirvana D.

Yelp
Very hit or miss. Not very consistent but they have good prices. I only go for the sushi. Miso soup is always watered down. The ginger salad is good. I've tried the Chinese food a couple times, it was good. The last time I ordered tuna rolls it was tendons in my rolls and I took them back and got a refund. I think they could improve on quality because some days I order are better than others.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
I love the box they put everything in, it's a nice touch. They have really nice portions, which is great. It's not the best sushi, but you can do far worse honestly. It's a good go to for me when I am craving sushi, close.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Whenever I'm craving sushi to enjoy in my living room, Tai Fai is it! Their food is always fresh and delicious. For it to be pretty much a carry out spot it's always neat and clean. I love that they allow you to buy things you don't want/need to put on the walls for others to use to enjoy that does want/need them. It's a great idea for paying it forward. Sorry I don't have any pics because I usually eat the yummy food up without thinking about a picture! I love the fried crab stick appetizer. It's always cooked perfectly. The customer service is excellent as well! If they say it's gonna be 20 minutes then it will be 20 minutes. No excessive waiting or attitudes. Try it...you will like it!
google avatar

Lorenza T.

Yelp
I love this place! Fried rice options are awesome....Sushi selections are perfect! I may have reviewed them before, if not please check out this hidden oasis! LoL
google avatar

gwen s.

Yelp
Just please get the baked avocado. All of the sushi is great but sheesh this is SO GOOD!!
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Great price and taste for sushi and their avocado roll is to die for. However, dishes like the lo mein are drowning in sauce. I wish they cut back on the sauce so my meal wasn't too soggy to eat.
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
This is my go-to sushi place in metro-Detroit. Quick service. Delicious sushi. Good portion sizes too!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Tai Fai ALWAYS gets everything right. Every time. I've been a customer since 2020, always delivery, and my orders are always perfect. I order sushi exclusively, and Tai Fai wins hands down every time. The fish is always buttery and fresh, and they always have the creamiest avocados. Always extremely happy and beyond satisfied every time. High praise to the sushi chefs!!
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Tai Fai is a tiny takeaway sushi place hidden in a Ferndale strip mall. They are super busy so best if you order ahead. Beautiful sushi rolls. One of my top favorites and I can get my salmon skin rolls here
google avatar

Tonee S.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place... truly I did. But no. Pros: My order was delivered by Uber Eats, Valentines Day night. Preparation and delivery were timely and appreciated. I ordered Fuji Mountain Roll and The Spicy Tempura Salmon and shrimp roll. Both looked great, were tightly rolled, and was an adequate portion size. No complaints. Cons: I ordered the Fuji mountain roll which is described as having: soy paper wrap, spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, topped with shrimp and wasabi mayonnaise. MY FUJI MOUNTAIN ROLL HAD CANNED TUNA IN IT!!!!! IM not paying $15+ a roll for CANNED TUNA!!!! Never in my life!!!!! I have no plans to return! Very disappointed and was not how I planned to spend my valentines evening. This would have been a decent experience if quality was up to par. Please do better!
google avatar

Booshi H.

Yelp
This is one of the best Asian fusion restaurants in the area! The staff is always friendly. This is more of a Togo spot, there are some chairs to sit while you wait. And a little sushi counter bar with a few bar stools to sit if you choose to sit and eat in. They have another location in Waterford which offers dine in. Everything I've ever ordered here has been tasty. You can't beat large portions with great price points. I've had them cater for me here and they do not disappoint. Some of my favorites are the Japanese style fried rice, sizzling green beans the crispy spicy shrimp, all of their sushi. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you order here! Go get some!

George P.

Yelp
Went yesterday and had some spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. I've been sick all night and today. I should have known when I opened up the carryout box and the smelled but my dumbass still tried it and I will never go back!!!!

Kristianna K.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed this sushi. It was reasonably priced. I moved down south and came back to the prices more than doubled. I know Covid sent prices higher, but when you're charging $2 for a piece of salmon nigeri and then 2 years later it's $4.50. I mean, over twice the price? Come on.
google avatar

Ashley N.

Yelp
I have been coming here for probably at least 8 years. Some of my favorites include the baked avocado, miso soup, tai fai roll, calzone roll, shrimp fried rice and the lo-mein. Every time I go, the food is always excellent. I'm not sure why I never made a review but I see they got some new boxes which is why I'm here. I haven't to Tai Fai in while so I'm not if these were maybe given to them as promotional boxes or this is the new norm. Either way, I still have an option on it. They used to use the regular white styrofoam boxes but now they have these in my photo. It's a really cute and a nice box but probably costs a lot and is completely unnecessary in my opinion. The food has certainly gone up over the years. I'm not mad about that. They have to adjust their prices and that's no biggie to me. It is 100% worth and I understand how much food is costing these days with inflation. I just cannot help but think that the cost of these incredibly nice take out boxes would be passed onto the customers through an increase in the price of menu items. Personally, I would prefer the white styrofoam box and lower menu prices. Anyways, that's the end of my rant on the boxes. The food is always delicious and definitely go try it!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
Better portion compared to other competitor take outs. Fresh tasting ingredients and I loved the variety of vegetables.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Tai fai is our go to Asian takeout! We live nearby so it's easy, but it's also super fast! We typically order online, but even when we call in the staff is friendly, helpful, and kind. I love the price point for the food as well. Doesn't feel too overpriced for what you get. We love their sushi, pretty much every roll is good. They have some more unique ones with chicken and such for those who may not be as adventurous of eaters. Starting a meal with either their crab wontons or lettuce wraps are our go to's. Then we typically order either sushi or some kind of Asian cuisine. I love their General Tsai's chicken, but my husband likes the Thai menu. Their pad Thai is just as good if not better than some local Thai restaurants. The Japanese's fried rice is also phenomenal. Such a different take on fried rice that I haven't seen many places. If you're looking for a good sushi place or just all around good Asian takeout, look no further.

Paul M.

Yelp
Well my friend lives near by. I order 60.00 sushi etc. Needed to use bathroom went outside the door was caked with grease opened door big stainless steel bowels with pre cooked chicken saran wrap sweating with flys all over. GROSS bathroom disgusting. Got my food to go. Eating it after an hour my mouth started to water like I was going to puke 1/2 hour later raced to the toilet all liquid squirts (Food Poisoning) Almost shirting in my pants 1 hour late and a 1/2 roll of TP.WARNING contacting the health department. I threw the remaining $60.00 worth of food in the garbage..... NEVER AGAIN FILTHY DISCUSTING RESTAURANT.

Shaq S.

Yelp
I really like this place , they have Chinese food and Japanese style dishes , so you can get shrimp fried rice Japanese style or Chinese style , I get the Japanese style fried rice , they give you a very large portion Also they have sushi which is freshly made , you can see the chefs making it in the front of the restaurant If you walk in and place a order you can stand around in the lobby , which is small , so I go sit in my car and usually takes 10-12 mins and it's ready No dine in , only carry out
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh sushi! Tried the Salmon Skin Roll ($7.25) - THICK salmon skin and loved the sweet eel sauce on top. White Tuna and Scallion Roll ($7.25) - Well Made, Very Yummy Rolls are not big but they are surprisingly filling! Ordered takeout, food was ready quickly and packaged nicely. Didn't look like there was much seating inside.

Carolyn N.

Yelp
Egg roll 4 stars Shrimp Tempura 3/4 stars Chicken Lettuce Wraps - 2 not good, not fresh asian vegetables, they used canned or frozen vegetables. not worth the cost
google avatar

Vandapooh K.

Yelp
Just sooo good. I have no complaints. I go all the time. I love eating here. Delicious is all I'm going to say.. lol

Miro M.

Yelp
Great food high quality reasonably priced. Well Seasoned never had an issue with this place. Clean environment
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
I was so surprised when my food arrived. The box was packaging was a beautiful box and the contents were amazing. The rice was still warm on the rolls and that rarely happens. The fish was fresh and delicious. Plenty of wasabi and a large container of soy.

Darryelle L.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite place to get sushi. I've been coming here for 5 years now. Recently the prices have been high for a low amount of sushi. I got two different rolls and spent 28 dollars and got 5 rolls for each roll...I usually get 7-8 per roll. I was told by workers before to let them know ahead of time what I would like and to put it in my notes just for them to write on the note that I asked for too much. I will not be coming here again. New York sushi and O'Sushi, and Sushi Zone are wonderful places to go in the city.
google avatar

Sierra B.

Yelp
I come here frequently now. This is my new favorite sushi place so far. You definitely get more bang for your buck here. It is a distance from my home but it's definitely worth the drive. It's carry out only so you won't capture any fancy plated presentations but the food is oh so good. I mainly order the sushi, so I can't speak on the hot food. The food is bussin' as the kids like to say.
google avatar

DeMario M.

Yelp
Sushi was really good. I was skeptical at first but the restaurant was super busy. The presentation was dope too. I would definitely try it again.

David M.

Yelp
This is a fantastic place that is usually our go to for take-out Asian foods. Sushi, a few Chinese dishes, a few Thai dishes, a few Japanese, dishes, and all done really really well. Quick polite service. Clean. It is usually busy, as others have said. We always call in our orders and have never had an issue or been disappointed. You couldn't ask for more.
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
Employees are always polite, sushi is always made quickly and it's the best sushi in the area. The Michigan roll is the best sushi roll I've ever had and the smoked salmon nilgiri is a must.
google avatar

Miche'le F.

Yelp
Excellent shrimp& noodles. You can get it without eggs. Very crowded at lunch. They take online orders. Fresh & tasty.
