Find Black Truffle and Curry-Filled Sheng Jian Bao at This New SGV Pop-Up | Eater LA

"On a quiet tree-lined street in El Monte near a couple of auto parts stores, I visited Little Pan-Fried Bun’s pop-up at 10627 Main Street and found they whip up Chinese sheng jian bao with real skill — the traditional buns (filled with ground pork and gelatin that melts into soup when cooked, then pan-fried on the bottom) come out crispy on the base, juicy and pillowy soft, often thought of as the pan-fried cousins of xiao long bao. They do the classic well and push it further with creative fillings like curry pork, corn cheese, purple yam and cheese, and even a 24K gold black truffle variety; the menu also includes seafood pancake, oxtail soup with tomato, millet congee, and puff pastries filled with durian, hawthorn, and jujube. Inside, a white statue of Atlas holds the world on his shoulders against light-gray walls decorated with a modern mural of Chinese characters, and the operation — which also has a permanent location in Santa Ana and was started by China native Vicky Liu, who studied business at UC Riverside — is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m." - Jean Trinh

Google
new favorite chinese place The BBQ pork is awesome and you get an awesome amount of food on your plate. The old men who works at the counter is accomodating and the lobby where you eat is big and spacious with loungey sofas.

Google
Food is good and low price! However... The atmosphere can be slightly outdated. Extra charge for card use. The restrooms need a special token to enter, which means you will have to bother the ones serving the food... Other than that, we definitely recommend it! The Tai Pan restaurant has a variety of entries that will make your tastebuds satisfied. We got the 3 entry and a boba drink for only barely $11! Not bad for the price. The boba is good. It does not have lots of sugar like other places do. Plenty of parking, they serve your food in seconds.

Google
We love this place. I’ve been going there for years never had an unpleasant experience. The food is always so so delicious and the family and employees that work. There are just always so kind.

Google

Andrew Y.

Google
Employees are nice and food is decent. Huge portions and you can order a combination of white rice, fried rice, or chow mein. I personally like the mushroom chicken the most. Don't come here right at open like I did. They only had about 1/3 of the dishes ready. I recommend coming in half an hour after opening.

Yelp
I haven't been back 20 years, and it still looks the same way it did back in the day. My family used to eat their vegetable bowls--warm fluffy rice topped with crisp gravy vegetable melody, topped with crunchy wantons. Taste was a bit different this time around but still pretty good. Place is still clean. No dine allowed yet. Portions are decent.

Yelp
They are extremely rude at this place. As a business they should have a much better customer service attitude, towards the public. Take into consideration there is absolutely no sign anywhere around the parking structure indicating that "any" vehicle should be parked for only a certain amount of time as most professional business places have. Not to mention, as I was approaching to step into my car with my baby in hands minding my own business, this lady steps outside and screams very demanding for me not to park outside... in public parking . Definitely will I never nor myself, family members and friends support this business that is not peoples friendly. Not only do they have the ugliest customer service ever, but their business it self is not the cleanest at all. Overall if I could give this place a 0 I most definitely would.

Yelp
Always giving a lot of food , one box last me 2 days, they pile the food in there !!! It is way better than alot of places I've been to . They trim the chicken meat so you don't bite into any hard pieces . I recommend the pork belly and the potato chicken curry. Their rice is so good too it has the peas in it ! Also I really like the kung pao chicken . They have broccoli beef and orange chicken sesame chicken and salt and pepper shrimp too .!!!

Cruz R.

Yelp
This place never disappoints we have gone there for many many years and it's always so delicious. The service is great. We even ordered party trays for our son's eighth grade promotion. and the family there is just always always kind. Never have we had an unpleasant experience

Yelp
Nostalgia is the first word that comes to mind when I think about Tai Pan. For most, food sitting under a hot lamp is not their ideal way of eating lunch or dinner but for me, it brings me back to my childhood! Looking for fancy food? Wine list? Nope, you'll just find nothing but walk in service with some amazing food. The chow mein and fried rice that comes with every combo is very flavorful and always consistent. I opted to get 2 side with my entree and went for the broccoli beef and the sliced BBQ pork. Broccoli beef was amazing, had a nice gravy to it that covered the vegetables. BBQ pork was sliced thick and had a nice fatty pieces attached that coated your lips in delicious fatty collagen. I love how over stuffed they fill your box with food! Tai Pan will forever be in my heart. Tucked away in a little corner behind a mall. You only come here if you know this place and you DEFINITELY want to get to know this place. Until I see you again (I always stop here when I visit from Las Vegas, NV).

Yelp
Been coming here for over 30 years and I will continue to come here ! We don't mind the 30 min drive ! We love the food here ! All the workers here are so kind and friendly. They serve you a decent amount.. my favorite is the orange chicken, the bbq pork and broccoli beef!
google avatar

Tina R.

Yelp
I think an off day because they didn't give me beef to my beef and broccoli. The restaurant was practically empty now I know why
google avatar

Yelp
FYI - When you use a credit card, they charge you $1 extra. There is no sign about that. I understand the inflation. Their prices have already gone up and they charge extra using a credit card. If I knew in advance I would bring cash. Should've went someone else. I regret coming here. Horrible business. I'm not coming back.

Alex C.

Yelp
The restaurant was empty on a Saturday night at 6pm. Should have been a sign. Got the chow mein, bbq ribs and black bean ribs. 3 item combo. The bbq ribs were ok, the black bean ribs were soft and tender but lacking that black bean taste and the chow mein was average. Previous reviews said the wor won ton soup was amazing. I would beg to differ. The won tons, though plentiful were of the frozen kind and falling apart, the shrimp was over cooked and the chicken tasted like it had been stewing in the broth all day. Instant wor won ton soup would have been better. I took some food to go, orange chicken, chow mein and white rice. My kid said it tasted like Panda Express. The food sits in a steam tray with not a lot of turnover so unknown how long it sits there. It may be busy earlier since it's right across the street from the freeway and bus depot. This also means they get a lot of housing challenged in the area. Just saying, tried it, nothing special, not going back.

James A.

Yelp
Everything was great and flavorful! Step above the usual salty Chinese fast food Will definitely be making the drive over here for Chinese food Chow mein is amazing, even steamed rice is amazing! Had to get a side order of FRESHLY MADE orange chicken and I was not disappointed Kudos to the chef!

Yelp
BEST THAI TEA! love this place! I always walk past it on my way home and have been eyeing the food and drinks, decided to actually go in for once and I'm glad I did! I was actually surprised but the Thai Tea is the best Thai Tea I've ever had, I got it without boba but I bet it's good with it too, it's really good and the prices in general are great. The people working are also really kind, clean fun environment has TVs The strawberry drink tasted great, I'm definitely coming back and bringing someone to sit down and eat the food :)
google avatar

Elijah A.

Yelp
They are friendly give big portions and the food is delicious if you pay with card under $25 it's a $1 surcharge besides that it's great
google avatar

Daisy R.

Yelp
Ive been coming to Tai Pan over 20 years and even though they have changed owners a few times the food still taste the same. Very good. Bbq pork and broccoli beef and chicken are the best. Very tender. The owner is a very nice man. The portions are decent size amd the summer special is buy a 2 item combo and you get a 3rd item for free. Very good price for $6.89.

Yelp
Four stars because I haven't tried everything there but overall the food is good and serving size is plentiful. Highly recommend Wor Wonton soup. Packed full of meat, veggies and several wontons.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
The best war wonton soup and shrimp fried rice. They make it fresh to order. They don't skimp on the shrimp or the soup.
google avatar

Lita V.

Yelp
My favourite Chinese in El Monte! Get the wonton soup. Yes! Play lotto and watch tv land shows. I hope this place stays open another 30 years!
google avatar

Antonio D.

Yelp
Tai Pan still has the best war wonton soup. They have had to cut back on staff and close their dining area. But their food is still really great. I had their two types of ribs, Bar-B-Q pork and fried rice and chow mein. They have keep their food #1 and they still have alot of people stopping in to order and eat their food.
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
Came here for a quick meal. Got chow mein and fried rice with a side of orange chicken and teriyaki chicken. Instantly the food tasted really greasy. In addition the chicken entrees both weren't the best in taste too. Overall, I would probably not come here and instead head to Yummi Chinese food which is a small a distance from here for better quality food. This place might be a bit cheaper however they charge a dollar if you pay with card and the total is less than 25.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews; however, I feel this restaurant is underrepresented and understarred, call it a term. I've been to numerous 2-star places, and quite frankly, they deserve 2-stars. But having had a sampler at this place, it really is a lot better than other restaurants with its rate. Although the food was slightly oily and I cannot consume much oil, let's face it. Most restaurants don't hold back on oil usage. Maybe I'm Asian, or maybe I'm just hungry, but this place is more than 2 stars. Perhaps not 5, but surely this will help push it towards where it belongs. The food tasted much like food at home. Favorites: Orange Chicken Chasiu Most of the other stuff that don't look too oily in texture

Christy C.

Yelp
orange chicken was super delicious. chow mein and fried rice was really good as well. noodles werent dry and the fried rice had great flavor. the service was good. they just ran out of orange chicken but the guy was nice to make my boyfriend and i a fresh batch! kung pao chicken was OK.. just because i mainly got veggies instead of protein. HUGE portions bro really worth it less than $20 to feed two people. will come back here again!

Yelp
Delicious Chinese food with quick and friendly service! I usually stop by tai pan weekday afternoons and I'm always greeted by a friendly worker and it's never crowded. My absolute favorite side is the jalapeño chicken & I usually pair it with a milk tea boba. They recently added some new drinks that I need to try out soon.
google avatar

Gerardo H.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst Chinese fast food I have ever had. The only reason I ate it was because I was starving and had to get back to work since my lunch time was running out. the chicken tasted as if it was pure skin and fat.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Worst chow mein ever. The orange chicken wasn't much better either. They both tastest old and the noodles weren't fried at all just limp and tasteless. They overcharged me as well saying it was "tax charge"
google avatar

Marcus M.

Yelp
Service- ehhh, Prices- HIGH, Food- Average, Tried this place on my way home the other day and was not impressed. The biggest drawback this place has is the patronage. A lot of "street people" here who have no problem interrupting you while you eat!. It almost has the feel of a train/bus station. All this and its on the high side of prices as far as Chinese food places go. For better food, prices, and service go to Foody Goody. The place is a dive/hole in the wall but everything is a step up from Tai Pan

Bryan Y.

Yelp
My brother and my mom bought dinner there for to go and both had food indigestion afterwards
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
I like this place..I like it better than Panda Express..The people that work here always nice..The only reason a 4 star is because of the egg rolls..Sometimes burned.
google avatar

Jesse D.

Yelp
WOR wonton soup with thin noodles is amazing!! There other food is just as good too.
google avatar

Zhixun W.

Yelp
The food is good, the lady severing me looks nice. However, the dining environment need to improve
google avatar

Vik S.

Yelp
Total crooks. we asked for food for 5 people and they send us this horrible food in party platters charging us $65. the food was inedible and was thrown away. Do not order from these crooks.
google avatar

Sabrina H.

Yelp
I don't get stuck in the bathroom afterwards and I don't feel like I got kicked in the stomach either when I'm done eating here. Most Chinese food places make me sick, but this one's ok. They also have good Thai Tea, even though the Boba balls are a bit mushy. Overall, I think this place is decent in food, and the atmosphere/decor is "whatever." I can't complain though... Every so often I keep finding myself back in here for my lunchbreak again.
google avatar

Rafael D.

Yelp
Very friendly, very affordable. I tried a few different items and they mostly tasted the same, hence the 4 stars instead of 5.
google avatar

Cynthia P.

Yelp
I've come here a handful of times because it's close to my job for a 30 min break, and the only place I can satisfy my craving for hot and sweet orange chicken.. But as I've happened to eat my food there I've noticed the kind of people who hang around and inside the restaurant. A lot of people who hang on the streets and ask for spare change and because of that I give this restaurant a 2 star rating. The location isn't great and inviting and I don't want to be bothered by some street boy while I have my lunch. No thank you! The food isn't so bad, it isn't the greatest of fast food Chinese shops but they're usually all greasy and kinda scummy..
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
not bad, noodles are a lil too dried, but you get a pretty damn good size of what they serve you, a 3 items for just 7 something, pretty nice
google avatar

Alfonso L.

Yelp
Foods pretty good a little pricey but the MSG is bomb and the house fried rice rocks.

Nessa E.

Yelp
I've came to this place since I was small. The food is delicious. I love the beef broccoli and bbq pork. They give you a lot in the combos. The fried rice is also very good, it comes with veggies. I've always loved this place. There usually isn't a line and lots of booths to sit at. Only bad thing is the people who hang out there. Sometimes they come in and bother. But great place overall.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
this place is ok for a quick lunch but i have had way better chinese food ! cheap and fast.

R S.

Yelp
i was about to eat there yesterday when i noticed pots, pans and cooking utensils laid out on the ground in the alley behind the kitchen door. this is apparently how they dry their cooking equipment. some of the trays and pans were sitting on oil stains left by cars, and still had soap on them! disgusting!
