If I told my coworker about my experience at Tai Pan, you know what she would say?
"What do you expect, eeedjiot?!"
I can always trust her to keep it real!
I know, I know...it's Palo Alto so expensive and mediocre are common but when you're in a time crunch, sometimes convenience wins.
Unfortunately, not this time...
We were a mile away at Town & Country and had to be back in the city in 2 hours...and was craving dim sum. I called Tai Pan to see how long the wait was for an outdoor table and was quoted 5 minutes. Cool so I drove over.
But, eeedjiot me didn't read the yelp reviews so I didn't realize how slow the service is (older reviews state service is very slow so I'm not sure if it's entirely covid).
Not going to knock the rating for the slow service but just to give you an idea...I could have driven to my usual dim sum spot in Cupertino, eaten, and be back in Palo Alto in less time than the amount we spent waiting for our food at Tai Pan.
Tai Pan is open for takeout, delivery, indoor dining, and outdoor dining.
Indoor tables are spaced out but the dining area seemed stuffy. For outdoor dining, there's 12-14 tables in the parklet and sidewalk. The tables are close together. Most are shaded. No heat lamps.
All staff wore masks properly.
F O O D
Maybe it was an off day but the dim sum we had ranged from eeeck to mediocre with dessert being the highlight. I'm so glad we ordered conservatively.
* Sautéed Turnip Cake w/ XO Sauce ($12 on menu, charged $14)
First dish to come after 25 minutes, and it was sadly, a precursor of what to come.
The turnip cake was almost all flour; of the 3 squares I had, only one had a piece of turnip. Not only was it missing a crisp exterior, it wasn't warmed through in the center, and lacked any seafoody umami flavor from the XO sauce.
* Siu Mai: Pork & Shrimp Dumplings ($8.50)
Pretty standard but two were missing a shrimp on top.
* Fung Zhao: Steamed Chicken Feet ($8.50)
Wasn't steamed long enough so the chicken feet didn't have that meltingly soft, gelatinous goodness. Quite salty and spicier than the norm.
* Steamed Pork Ribs ($8.50)
It was ok, though the pork could have been more tender. Also, quite salty.
* Har Gow: Steamed Shrimp Dumplings ($8.50)
Very thick skin with gloopy bottoms and large air pockets (we just ate the shrimp filling). Similar to what you can get at a Chinese deli/bakery but at double the cost.
* Steamed Beef Balls ($8.50)
I wish I took a pic of this BUT I immediately noticed a human black hair sticking out of one of the balls so I quickly turned around to wave someone down.
The beef balls looked small and dry; not the usual big, plump, and bouncy ones you get at other Cantonese restaurants.
* Crab Claw (2 pc-$14)
They must of went crabbin' for these bad boys because this took over an hour to receive. These were fine but IMO, not worth the premium pricing; mainly shrimp paste with an itty bitty crab claw shell.
* Egg Tarts (Comped)
Best part of our meal!
As an apology for the hair mishap, a thoughtful female server brought these over. The warm mini egg tarts had a deliciously buttery, shatteringly flaky crust (not greasy) with a jiggly smooth, glossy custard filling. Subtly sweet with a kiss of vanilla, not overly eggy.
Their sister restaurant on University (Steam) makes bomb sesame balls so desserts seem to be their forte.
S E R V I C E
Friendly and very proactive owner; she bussed and turnover tables so customers can be quickly seated. The other female staff are also kind but don't expect any check-ins and you have to wave your arms in the air for things. No water refills. Male staff are brusque.
Food service is much slower than other Cantonese restaurants; dumplings arrived staggered, taking 40-55+ minutes. Don't come hangry!

80s classy with staff wearing silky cheongsam jackets. Surprise to see a full bar.

Street parking only but there's a public lot next door.
Overall, it was a two star experience at Tai Pan. Seems more like a restaurant to bring clients or out-of-town guests. However, I appreciate the female server apologizing for the hair mishap and trying to make things right. If you regularly go to Chinese restaurants, you know this is unheard of so 2.5 stars rounded up.
