"Mixed sashimi over rice at this classic Monterey Park sushi restaurant is only $20.50. It’s served with some warm miso soup, which helps complete the light meal." - Matthew Kang

"With February around the corner, it was high time I got my hands on a serving of ozoni, the essential Japanese new year soup. So over a lunch of nigiri and sushi rolls at Taihei in Monterey Park, a friend and I shared a hefty cauldron filled with shrimp, chicken, fish cakes, napa cabbage, and mushrooms — all cooked in a fortifying dashi broth. Hiding underneath the abundant vegetables and proteins were wonderfully sticky orbs of mochi." - Eater Staff

Taihei is a legendary neighborhood Japanese restaurant, serving locals / the real ones for decades. Their lunch specials looked phenomenal, but even their dinner menu serves up serious value. I got the 3-item combo dinner (starts at $27, with each special item $1 more). Standout items include tonkatsu (crispy, perfectly cooked) and beef teriyaki. The salmon sashimi was generously portioned, and I’d order the teriyaki beef with no sauce next time (quite sweet). But the miso soup was fuego and I loved the small touches on the bento - orange slice, potato salad, and edamame!! I will 100% come back, and soon.

Google
The good the sushi. The bad no tap and go. When you get the shrimp sushi you get the choice of that deep fried head in miso soup. I would come back just for that.

The food here was delicious, and the quality of the uni was excellent. The portions were generous as well. The only downside was the beef in the beef udon — it was a bit tough and hard to chew.

This Japanese restaurant is delicious. They have a sushi bar and a lot of delicious food. It's open for a few hours for certain days. The service is good. They're always full. For dinner they open at 5 pm and close at 9 pm. The workers are tentative and are always helpful. The parking is small. They get a line of people around 6 to 7 pm. In the pick the dish I had is called Oozone which is a soup with rice balls, chicken, and shrimp it is only served for new years after January they stop serving it. The shrimp tempura was very delicious. This placed is recommended.

Google
The place is VERY authentic. I think it's a mom and pop restaurant. It's very small so be prepared for a wait on the weekends! We ordered a rainbow roll plate and a mix of nigiri. And you can get a complimentary miso soup per usual here. The fish were pretty fresh and is the right temperature of coldness here. The servers we had were so nice and so accommodating and had offered plenty of dips and sauces if we needed. As for parking it's not a problem, they have neighborhood parking. But just on Fridays there's a sign that has street sweeping 8am-4pm! But other than that it was great.

Google
The servers were great and very friendly. We parked on the street nearby and had about a 5 minute wait to get a table although we could have sat at the sushi bar without waiting. The 20 piece sashimi platter was so fresh and delicious, as was the sushi which was ordered a la carte. Would highly recommend!

Google
Hidden sushi gem. It's small, the fish is fresh and well priced. Service was friendly considering they were packed on a Friday night. Our table ordered sashimi, tempura shrimp, rainbow, and eel cucumber rolls with tempura as an appetizer. Great local spot that's family ran since the 80's, can't wait to return!

Was looking for Butterfish when I returned from Hawaii. This place definitely exceeded our expectations and also had amazing Butterfish. Always sold out tho so get it when you can. Very low-key and inconspicuous. Fairly priced. A hidden gem.

Yelp
4.4 stars on for my dinner. I had unodon, blue crab hand roll, mix tempura. I didn't get any sashimi nor sushi. The unodon was great. The grilled eel was thick and good amount of pieces. The sauce was enough on top of the eel and seep through the rice with great flavor. The blue ran roll with a few drip of soy sauce and wasabi tasted great. The tempura was just right with the tentsuyu dipping sauce. Having it with some rice was perfect. Overall all i had a great meal. I would come back to have other dishes. The ambiance was nice. Small place with nice cool air from the AC blowing. The waiter and waitress gave awesome service. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Taihei food is always consistent and yummy! Their tempura is definitely one of my favorites of all the Japanese restaurants I've tried in SoCal. The combo plates offer a complete variety of delicious sides--salad, Japanese potato salad, edamame, miso soup, and a slice of orange wedge in addition to your choice of 2-3 entrees. I can never finish my entire combo plate and end up taking part of it home to enjoy later. The service is always polite, welcoming, and attentive despite the usual busy business. This is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with limited seating and not much ambiance, but it is our go-to restaurant for consistently good Japanese food.

Yelp
SUSHI TO GO 3.5 STARS One of the few authentic Japanese sushi restaurants in Monterey Park we go here or Shinano. We ordered to go chicken teriyaki sashimi and tempura combo and a sushi plate. Everything was good but I'm a sushi snob and felt their sushi rice was plain and the sushi itself was just okay. Not melt in your mouth quality but for the area good enough. Shinano has better fish IMO. Tempura were an eggplant, sweet potatoe, broccoli, pumpkin etc yummy and chicken teriyaki was a bit grilled too dry and drenched in sauce.

Yelp
Came here with family to celebrate a birthday. My one family member was in a wheelchair. It's a tiny restaurant, so it's a bit of tight squeeze getting her in/out, but the staff was so very kind and helpful in getting us through the experience. Tip: if you will also bring someone with mobility challenges, I highly recommend having someone ask the staff to let them through the backdoor. They are very accommodating and you will not have to overcome the incline at the front door. We each enjoyed our sukiyaki and chirashi-zushi. My uni nigiri was so plump and just melted. Good stuff. This is Japanese comfort food, so if you're hoping for fancy; this won't be it. For lunch combos, btw: level set your expectations appropriately. Restaurants offer lunch combos for a modest price to keep their stock turned over. If you're looking for the best pieces of fish, then don't be surprised that you should have paid for the full-priced entree version. Just sayin'.

Rong F.

Yelp
The WROST sushi place ever! They cheating on sashimi by using FROZEN fish on my lunch combo. It's obviously frozen tuna as it's frosty chewy, white vein crossing each fish pc. And beef teriyaki taste like jerky that I could not eat! It's all extremely Cheap quality! Do Not Cheat on your customers. It's really a Cheap act. It's $30 Horrible lunch combo (tuna sashimi n beef teriyaki)

Winnie T.

Yelp
One of our favorite sushi place in SGV!! I have been to Tahei for years. Just realized that I never wrote a review on it. Definitely one of the hidden gem in Monterey park. A very traditional Japanese sushi place with one of freshest fish that you can found anywhere. We always order tons of sushi from them. Price is reasonable. Special MP items like sweet shrimp, uni and toro are all exceptional food and reasonable price as well. With sweet shrimp, they still give you an option to cook the heads with miso soup or deep fried. (Definitely pick the soup!) Service is excellent. They always check on you regularly. Pretty rare for Asian restaurants One thing to notice, they are Very popular. On weekend, they will be completely full by 5pm. No reservation. If you hate waiting, you got to come around 4ish. There were a pretty long line by the line we got out before 6pm!

Yelp
Taihei has been a staple in my family's eating out roster for 25+ years. And the quality has never disappointed. I've came with multiple friends over the years who have pointed out how much better Taihei is in comparison to other spots throughout LA due to the quality of the fish, service and price point. This little hole in the wall is one of my most cherished restaurants in Monterey Park, and I hope it continues to stand for many many many years.

Yelp
Salmon, Halibut, Yellowtail, and Albacore - (5/5) Miso Soup - (5/5) not too salty, enough tofu Chirashi Sushi - (4/5) rating would vary depending on your taste! Ambiance: The sushi spot is relatively small with a Japanese vibe. It gives off a peaceful atmosphere and is warm inside. Food & Service The service is nice, and the food arrives at a decent pace. The food is good, nothing too special. When ordering the Chirashi Sushi, the mixed sashimi will be surprise if you don't ask about it. They provide ponzu and soy sauce, guiding you on which sauce pairs with each fish. The soup that comes with this order is the miso soup.

Yelp
Too small tight tables long wait. Very busy but left as it was.very long wait. I'm sure the food is delicious as so many stood outside waiting for an hour. Next time I wlll go early.

Ray J.

Yelp
Local favorite and glad I finally got to try it! Love the quality of the food, nice portions, and friendly service. Such a charming old school sushi restaurant. #MPKstrong

Gerry R.

Yelp
When craving sushi this spot hits every time. Fresh and definitely a top choice to satisfy all cravings. The staff is always friendly and very accommodating, offering their suggestions with your best interest in mind. The place is small and does get crowded, so expect somewhat of a wait. The ambiance is simple, and the menu is straightforward. Nothing complicated here, just a delicious experience.

Neal N.

Yelp
This is an icon Japanese restaurant in Monterey Park! This restaurant has survived basically everything, as many places didn't survive the COVID shutdown. The dining room is small, so it might take several minutes to get a table. For those craving sushi, they have an excellent bar with chefs eagerly waiting to create mouth watering treats. The staff are always hustling tending to diners with delicious food in tout. Especially my favorite, tonkatsu and temperature combination plate. Although the dining room is small, you can still enjoy conversations with your friends and family while dining. Meaning, the dining room isn't loud, just comfortable.

Michelle Z.

Yelp
I've passed by this place all my life and never knew this was an actual restaurant. It's pretty small so there's definitely a wait at dinner time, so come a bit early. We parked on the street right in front of the restaurant. I ordered a combo for dinner, which included a small bowl of miso, tonkatsu, salmon sashimi (cost extra $1) and salad. The food came out pretty quick. Our server was very sweet and always swung by to top off our water. The tonkatsu was a little dry, but nothing a bit more sauce wouldn't fix. I finished everything and was super full afterwards. I might try coming by next time to try their sushi; those look really good.

Jessica S.

Yelp
We waited about 25 min on a Friday night (checked in around 7:15). We were probably #6 on the list. Well worth the wait. Such kind and helpful staff. We were so full afterwards. But we didn't feel icky--we felt satisfied. This is probably a minute detail but we really loved their daikon and ginger here. They tasted fresh and packed with flavor. With the attention they give to these small sides, needless to say, the fish and rice were amazing. We are huge sushi fans but we eat the hot Japanese dishes as well. I'm eager to try a Combination Dinner next time. They have a friendly onsite an security guard and ample parking. They can accommodate families and solo diners. So bring the family or come alone, there's something for everyone!

Yelp
Sat immediately on a Wednesday around lunchtime! We ordered a 3 combo lunch special with sashimi, tempura, and salmon teriyaki, and the pork katsu with a salmon hand roll, cut tuna roll, and unagi eel sushi. The pork katsu was amazingly crispy and well seasoned, I found that I didn't need another sauce to complement with it! My boyfriend liked the sashimi and sushi, and our server was attentive and answered all the questions we had about the menu.

Yelp
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: AMAZING! Quality of fish is fresh! They do not take reservations! AMBIANCE: Casual. Noise level is average. DRESS CODE: Casual ORDERED: Yellowtail Collar, Sushi: salmon, yellowtail, toro, uni, sweet shrimp, tamago, masago, and so much more. Can't go wrong! FOOD OPTIONS: Not just sushi, but they have cooked food as well! They also have beer and sake! SERVICE: Service was good. On a busy night, food can take a bit longer (only two sushi chefs). Yelp
Excellent quality For the platters, not a big fan of the octopus (watery/rubbery) but everything else was yummy Service is great Ambiance is comforting Parking is a bit hit or miss

Jailuk P.

Yelp
If you're looking for old-school, no frills sushi and sashimi in MPk, this is the place for you. Their service is impeccable and top-notch. The ladies there are attentive and very accommodating. They are super nice too. They deserve 5-stars for the service alone! My only complaint is that I just wished they would slice the sashimi a little thinner. The pieces of fish I got were a little too thick. But other than that everything was delicious. Oh, and there's a pay phone inside. It looks like it's still functioning. Although I didn't pick up to test it out.

Joseph T.

Yelp
Food was amazing as always, I asked my wife if she wanted some shrimp tempura for lunch and 100% hit the spot for her and I. Quality of fish is good, service; the service was great! Multiple people were attentive to ensure you have everything you need or your drinks are refilled. If I remember correctly they painted the outside and maybe redid their sign. It's a small restaurant, intimate but great. The only thing I would say is the back is very small, to get to the restroom you pass the fry food prep area, but that isn't the most important aspect of the visit. It would be nice if they have a little update/upgrade by the restrooms or that little hallway. But times are tough! This will still be a spot I will return time after time.

Connie K.

Yelp
My favorite sushi and donburi place! The spicy tuna rolls and salmon sashimi are soooo good! I also like the sweet shrimp and blue crab hand rolls...I always get the chicken egg bowl too :) come early to get seated quick!

Alice Y.

Yelp
A small and intimate setting that my bf and I stumbled upon on a weekday night. The front door was unmarked, but their security guard helped usher us inside. Parking is sparse on the street or in the residential areas behind the block. Once inside, we were seated quickly. I overheard a server asking regulars if someone if their usual group didn't come tonight. How sweet! For dinner, we chose the Combo special (~$29) to share: - Miso soup: savory and light. - Broiled salmon collar: I was surprised by the large portion of fish. It was served with lemon, grated radish, and a side of chewy white rice that paired well with the juicy salmon. - Aemono of the day: octopus and vegetables in miso sauce. A bit light on the salt, and the flavors didn't gel. - Sashimi salmon: tasted good, but knife cuts were random and each piece varied widely in thickness. It still worked out for us because I like thinner slices of raw fish, so I ate the small pieces. - Tempura: 2 pcs shrimp, 1 large pc of kabocha, 1 slice of eggplant, 1 slice of green bell pepper, dipping sauce. So yummy! The batter was light and crispy, shrimp was succulent, vegetables were tender. We added an order of Oyako-don ($14), which was massive. Photos don't capture the depth of the serving bowl! I liked that the scrambled eggs were well done, but not rubbery. The pieces of chicken thigh were just okay, neither juicy nor dry, but the mild sweet sauce was on point. Rice was fully sauced, but remained chewy, and the cooked onions retained texture.

Catherine W.

Yelp
Got takeout from here - we called it in around 5, asking for it to be ready for pickup at 730! It was easy to pickup and so yummy! I forget how high quality this place is - extra good and fresh!

Lulu Z.

Yelp
Saturday 1630pm.. waited for a table seat, about 20-25 minutes. About 5 booths along the wall. One (4 ppl) table and two (6 ppl) tables. Plus bar seating. A small restaurant. Sign in sheet on clipboard is placed on top of the fish tank. The waiting area is very narrow, but somehow fitted five chairs for people waiting to dine in. We had ordered only sushi (2 pcs per order). But their special combo looked like such a tempting deal- about $31 for either/or options between, spicy tuna hand roll and fish collar, tempera and fish soup. Recommended: Chu-Toro ($18) - highly recommended Blue Fin Tuna ($10.50) Japanese Scallops ($11) Spanish Mackerel ($9.50) Fanny Bay Oyster ($4.50 each) must order more than two (this was definitely on the pricy side- but it was pretty good, med size meaty) Blah: Sea Bream ($7) - super lean.. dry texture Squid ($7) - thick sliced, chewy n' rubbery Ankimo ($14) Rice: some pieces were good.. but my last nigiri .. the rice reminded me of the bottom of the rice cooker kind of rice - I chewed for awhile even after I finished chewing my bluefin tuna. I was still chewing my rice. Limited parking in the back lot. Street and residential parking available.

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Taihei is a Monterey Park oldie and a very goodie. My mom introduced me to sushi here when I was 11 years old. I fell in love with hand rolls, salmon nigiri, salmon collar, and began being more adventurous in what I tried here. It's no frills and is a place that lets the food speak for itself. The food is always consistent, delicious, and the service kind and quick. Treat the staff kindly and tip well.

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Loved this tiny hole in the wall. I came here on a Friday night at around 5:45PM and the place was packed. Most people were there with their families who wanted to sit at the tables. If you wanted to sit at the sushi bar, it's sashimi and appetizers only. That was fine by me because I came to a sushi bar for sushi. I ordered what I wanted directly with the sushi chef, a friendly Japanese man named Nabe from Yokohama (that's how you know a sushi spot is legit). The restaurant is old but very clean. They still have an old corded wall phone with one of those bells as a ringer and even a defunct (unfortunately) pay phone by the front door. It really embodied the Japanese way of buying something forever. Americans are so quick to throw things away in our consumerist culture of materialism. This place is a blast from the past. Opened in the 1980s, this place hasn't changed much. The decorative fish tank, wall calendar advertising a trading company, phones with mechanical ringers, even the path to the bathroom was through the kitchen. A hole in the wall. A time capsule. A sushi restaurant at a reasonable price. Taihei is all of these things. 10/10 would dine here again.

Michelle W.

Yelp
Taihei is a hole in a wall. The service and staff are always on point, kind, and very friendly. The ambiance here is very relaxed and like home so it makes it easy to come here alone or with a group. The fish is always fresh and besides the sushi and sashimi, other dishes such as the udon dish or combination items taste delicious. The value is also great compared to other places like downtown LA which can be expensive. Parking is available in the back and side streets.

Christine V.

Yelp
I can see why people call this place a hidden gem! Even on weekday evenings, it's completely full. However, the wait times aren't long. I had a short wait before I was seated pretty quickly. The fish is fresh and the bento was delicious. The price is reasonable as well for the number of pieces you get. The staff are very nice and you'll see the owner working as well. Would definitely come again!

Kevin Y.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp and had some hope this might be a delightful mom and pop shop. The first thing I noticed was the 'fishy smell' in the restaurant; like a mixture of heat and spoiled fish. It may be due to the lack of ventilation. If you're sensitive to smells, I would say turn back now.Tried the chirashi, nigiri, and handrolls. Price overall was not bad, but the food was. 1. Chirashi - Everything on the chirashi was unpalatable, at least for me, and I could not endure to finish. The sushi rice was overcooked, and the fish was very 'stringy' and difficult to swallow. I had to chew the fish for a few moments before spitting it out. The fish was noticeably cold, as if it was defrosted from the freezer and not fully set to room temperature. I don't expect premium cuts for a chirashi but this was really, really, bad. I felt so bad for wasting food. 2. Nigiri - quality of fish okay. Scallop and squid was decent. Yellow tail meh, and the sweet shrimp was bland. Fried shrimp head tasted really good though! 3. Handrolls - these were okay. Found it odd the blue tuna handroll was leaking. Reminded me a bit of canned tuna without the liquid removed. This won't be a repeat spot for me.

Kyle W.

Yelp
This place is a nice little restaurant that serves a wide variety of nigiri and sashimi, as well as bento boxes with teriyaki and other dishes. I personally ordered the matsu-sashimi as it is of best value ($33 for 20 pc, 7 kinds) compared to ordering sashimi or nigiri a la carte where 2-3 orders amount to a similar price. It is also a slightly better recommendation to the matsu-sushi as the sashimi also comes with rice as well, just not sushi rice. All the sashimi were fresh, and as usual, I really love the tuna and the salmon cuts. The squid is also excellent, and one of my friends commented it's one of the best - texture wise, I wasn't a fan to fully appreciate it, but it was nonetheless flavorful. This order is more than enough for a filling meal for one person. A miss in this dish is that there was no ginger - I really would have appreciated it if they gave ginger for a palate cleanser like almost every sushi place. I also tried my friend's bento which had beef, chicken, and salmon teriyaki. It was overall solid, with the beef and salmon my favorites. The chicken was good but it was not too juicy and did not have the nice charred flavor that I tasted from the other selections. The teriyaki sauce was also pretty good - not too salty. Service is excellent as water refills are constant and they clear the dishes in a timely manner. Overall, this is a solid Japanese restaurant in the heart of 626.

Karlie S.

Yelp
Small cute mom and pop old-school Japanese cafe. When you walk in, you feel like you've been transported to a simpler time. The dinner combos are great and the sushi quality is good here! It gets quite busy for dinner. Street parking and there is additional parking in the back of restaurant.

Emilee L.

Yelp
It's really good. Everything just seems like it was made with love, and everyone treats you so nicely.

Jaime T.

Yelp
Parking: Free, lot and street I ordered sashimi and an eel bowl. Both tasted like great quality but eel bowl was a little basic. The dishes they serve are super simple. The restaurant itself was a small location but it still felt spacious. Good service

Annie N.

Yelp
I want to gatekeep what feels like a true, old-school hidden gem, but I can't because this place deserves to thrive! It's super authentic Japanese food that reminds me of the decades old mom and pop Japanese restaurants that are abundant in hawaii where I'm from. The combos are huge and a great deal. The sushi and sashimi have large generous portions of fresh fish... you gotta get the salmon and the mackerel! The staff is amazing and welcoming - they even waited to bring my friend's miso soup and rice until he sat down because he came later than us and we ordered for him. Seriously love this place!

Shun Z.

Yelp
This feels like a sushi spot for the locals. Old school Japanese restaurant. Sushi was very fresh, one of the best uni I had in awhile. Service was good, very attentive waiters/waitress.

Amanda C.

Yelp
We always drive past this restaurant, and I'm super glad we finally decided to eat here. It's a small restaurant, but we came in time to be seated right away. The servers were all really sweet! We ordered a sashimi plate, yellowtail collar, and natto, which we tried for the first time here. The fish tasted very fresh and delicious!!! It came with hot miso soup, rice, and salad. We'll definitely be coming back here to eat again!

James M.

Yelp
Truth be told this restaurant is a favorite amongst locals and Japanese Americans. The food is amazing and I'd recommend almost anything on the menu . As Japanese restaurants go , this one easily gets the stamp of approval. Combination dinner plates and the sushi are highly recommended but due to demand they do occasionally run out of certain items. The Tempura here is super legit so make sure to give that a try. Parking is available behind the restaurant and on the street. Overall Prices are reasonable and food is delish so if you find yourself In the area , you know what to do ! SYOY

Ken W.

Yelp
Best Sushi restaurant in the area. The dinner special is very special. 1) You get a choice of salmon or tuna sushi. 2) You get a choice of shrimp or fish tempura 3) You get a choice of 2 spicy tuna hand rolls or a grilled salmon collar 4) You get a choice of fish soup or chilled squid All for $31.99 A la carte sushi is very fresh too Best in town

Kenny L.

Yelp
All my Japanese friends told me that Taihei has better tasting food than other Japanese restaurants in the area. They weren't wrong right off the bat both my wife and daughter said ohhh it taste so much better and that was just the miso soup, Lol We all choose the 3 item combos. Salmon Teriyaki, Beef Teriyaki, Tonkatsu, California Roll, Chicken Teriyaki. The taste and superior meat quality is worth paying extra for. The restaurant is quite small waiting time was about 30-45 minutes you walk in and write your name and party size on on list and wait to be called. Service was great and attentive.

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
Went for lunch and let me tell you this place did not disappoint . The staff and servers are so welcoming and so polite and attentive which is something I love. I had the miso soup and it was yummy. Shrimp tempura was so delicious. Strongly recommend this place . Its a hidden little gem. Don't let the exterior fool you.

Puneet G.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding and the locals clearly know it. I rarely give 5 stars. This deserves 5 stars for the price point and the miso broiled fish, will make your eyes twist. The sushi is of great quality for this price point. I've definitely had better, but that's usually for a multi course $100+ omikase. Eat this deliciousness. Of note the teriyaki chicken and katsu are average.

Keith B.

Yelp
Food is outstanding, service is fast and friendly. Small place so you might have to wait a bit, but worth it. There is a small parking lot behind or street parking. Price is about what you would expect for a Sushi restaurant.

Julia H.

Yelp
Came to Taihei for a celebratory date night and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the sashimi & sushi here! Small restaurant space, clean restrooms, friendly service. Sign-in sheet is by the fish tank, for bar seating I think there is a min. order per person. We ordered the Mastu Sashimi (includes Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Octopus, Surf Clam, and I can't remember what else). Next time I might ask if we can substitute something else for the Octopus because I personally don't like thick cuts of Octopus...Anyway, all of the sashimi was fresh, and their Sashimi sets comes with miso soup and rice. We also got the Uni and Toro Sushi (MP is $21/order atm); Uni was deliciously creamy, but I think their regular Tuna is just as good as the Toro! Also ordered a Blue Crab and Spicy Tuna Hand Roll - both were good, standard. Also ordered a Katsu-Don which was literal comfort food. We didn't realize we'd already have rice with the sashimi set so this was a little overboard and we took this leftover to-go! Noticed a lot of to-go orders for their Tempura, so I'll definitely try that next time. Limited parking in the lot out back...otherwise, street parking around the residential area is fine too.

Gabriel A.

Yelp
I recently paid a visit to Taihei for a weekday lunch. They were very busy but luckily my friend and I got the last table. I ordered a sashimi lunch that had seven different types of seafood. Their quality of sashimi is still great and each piece is very large. The lunch comes with rice and miso soup. It was delicious and satisfied my sashimi craving. They also serve bento box lunches, have various rice bowls and some cooked fish options. Service was great as usual and there's a small parking lot behind them.

Rosanna L.

Yelp
Came here for data night. We both ordered the matsu-sashimi and a order of sweet shrimp sushi with the heads fried. First came the miso soup, one of the better that I have had. The sashimi dinner came our quickly afterwards thickly sliced and nicely presented. The sweet shrimp came next. I ate the fried shrimp head first since I didn't want it to get cold and soggy. It was crunchy and tasty. The sweet shrimp was sweet and fresh. The sashimi platter was fresh and came with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, some other white fish (red snapper maybe), octopus, squid and conch tail. The conch tail maid a impression on me cause it was very crunchy and resembled geoduck texture which is my favorite. Service was ok. Had to ask for water refill. Overall a good meal for a mom and pop shop. Will come again. Parking is street parking and they have a few spots in the back.

Looking for BOMB sushi in Monterey Park? Look no further! This sushi will knock your socks off. My favorites: - the sweet shrimp. They give you the option of getting the shrimp heads either fried (more traditional) or in a miso soup. - rainbow roll is especially delicious since it has tobiko (small fish eggs) inside. - clam clear soup. The clams are fresh and delicious!

Yelp
Taihei is the go to spot for really good sushi in Monterey Park. I've been to almost every other sushi spot in this city, and Taihei has the best fish. What you see here my husband and my go to order. If you don't know what to get, get these three dishes. It's a good balance of textures and flavors. Taihei does get packed quite easily. I always try to go a little early to eat, because this space does not have windows or a door that stay open. The staff is always fully masked. It's the people in the small space that could worry you this makes you nervous.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Japanese old-school owned sushi restaurants in the SGV. It's not really noticeable from the streets but has been a fixture in the community for awhile. During COVID 2020 lockdown we frequented this place doing pickup. It's best to call ahead to place your order for dinner or catering. I've tried pretty much everything on the menu and I can vouch that the seafood they use is very fresh. My absolute favorite dish there is their miso cod. It's delicate, flakes off, and has the best umami flavor! Their sashimi plates are also delicious and if you do decide to dine-in they have a sashimi bar area. They send you home with complimentary miso soup with to-go orders. Sometimes they have fresh uni on their menu and it's a treat! Easy parking on the side of the streets. If you drive too fast you may miss the location.

Yelp
Japanese family owed local spot. Great tempura combos at very reasonable prices. They not have people waiting on line when they open. Small place with maybe 5 booths an 3 tables. Small parking lot in the back

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places. Their cooked food is consistently at a pretty good level and their sushi is also very good. I wouldn't give this place 5 stars because that would give you the impression that it's perfect or a premium place. However, it is an excellent value. The cuts of striped bass, yellowtail, & salmon still rock and blue crab roll are always great! The ankimo is almost always on point. Certainly one of the best in the Southland. Last time I was there the miso soup quality wasn't quite what I was used to after decades of going there. But maybe that's nitpicking. The service is also fast, courteous, & excellent and that certainly has never faltered.
