"A longtime neighborhood staple since 2001 just north of Myers Park, satisfies American Chinese cravings with balanced and straightforward sa cha chicken (the crispness of the broccoli is what makes the dish), a not-too-greasy-or-salty shrimp fried rice, and crispy scallion chicken with fried bite-sized chicken pieces. Prices are reasonable, and the minimal, cozy, and casual dining room is popular among the work lunch crew." - Shindy Chen

First time buyer, I got the Sesame chicken cause i normally really enjoy the sweet and savory flavor. The taste was fine, i just couldn’t get past the inconsistent texture of the chicken. The first few pieces chicken were soft and mushy (probably soaked breading) and then I’d feel some chicken texture. After the 3rd piece i couldn’t do it anymore. Spent $15 on it so I expected a bit better quality of sesame chicken. Maybe i should ask them to fry it hard for me. The fried rice was cool can’t complain. Overall 2/5. I think the staff is very friendly and would give them another try but order something else! Any suggestions?

Google
bit torn about this one. friendly service, got a table right away. i had the beef lo mein. probably waited like 5 minutes at most. really quick service. my lo mein only had like 4 pieces of really chewy beef in it. okay. not the end of the world. but the noodles were soft and overcooked and they had this weird doughy texture that i couldn’t get past. i wasn’t a fan of the sauce either. the portion was smaller than i expected for the price. my spring roll was more of a winter famine roll. forgive me if i’m wrong but i thought they were supposed to have like veggies and stuff in them, right? mine was empty. it was just deep fried dough. so… yeah. i think i just expected something different from this place. can’t really say i would come back.

Google
I went to buy Chinese food beef with vegetables and rolled spring when I arrived it was a super small pot. And according to them they told me that it was the biggest almost $20 dollars for that pot that I see it too small for the value and the other thing that they put me a single rolled and I asked 5 hundred short I came and the table was left wanting to continue eating. I remain attentive if any attention

Google
So far best Chinese spot I’ve been in since I moved here from NY. So for starters me and my hubby can eat - we enjoy a good portion. We definitely underestimated how big their portions were- it was enough for dinner and lunch the next day! General chicken is good but I would prefer it spicier- just has a kick to it not really spicy Lo mein was flavorful and not salty - just right! Rice was mild in flavor but not bad or oily which is good. The biggest disappointment was the wonton soup. It only brought 2 small wontons all you get is broth. Was super sad about that as I cant find any places here that actually gives more wontons! Other than that you will def get a bang for your buck and food is delicious!

Google
It is always a pleasure to obtain a meal from here! Staff is always so welcoming, whether via phone or in person. Tonight, I'm having Green Beans, Chicken in garlic sauce, complimented with brown rice. I also added broccoli & water chestnuts to it, medium spices. Many thanks again for such a lovely meal.

Google
This is hands down the best take out/in Chinese food in Charlotte! This location still has all of the original recipes and they serve with excellence every time!! The location in Huntersville is not the same! The food doesn’t compare!! Taipei Express PROVIDENCE RD is the best!!!

Mina A

Google
I have to say first if your looking quick service this is the place. I always order my food ahead of time even if it’s my first time trying something from here usually never can go wrong. I love there fried rice the shrimp aren’t so small like other places. I always love there sesame chicken which was something new I tried this time. They also always have great lunch specials going on which comes with protein, rice and a egg roll. I definitely recommend this location. If you go and don’t see cars don’t worry most people are picking up there food and heading home.

Google
Family and I had an event to attend up the street from Queens college and our daughter was thinking Chinese. Best Crab Rangoon we've ever had hands down! Everything was excellent, the Crsipy Scallion Chicken was just awesome! The tip rating here is accurate.

Mason P.

Yelp
Great spot for lunch while you're out and about. Great for takeout dinner as well. They have seating inside with a total of about 15-20 seats at about 6-8 tables. The service is great and SPEEDY. Food comes out very hot.

Megan K.

Yelp
General tso chicken was huge, mushy pieces of chicken. I ate some & threw 80% of it away after that. The texture was too weird for me and the fried rice tasted old I've ordered from this place 3 times & this will be the last

Shari C.

Yelp
I have been eating at Taipei Express practically since they opened. Until recently, it was great! Our last 3 orders were terrible. The chicken in Crispy Scallion, Sweet & Sour, and Sesame Chicken was overcooked to the point of being hard to chew. I'll give it one more try, but that's it if they don't get it right.

A S.

Yelp
Ordered takeout, and prices on the website are not accurate. I paid 50% more than I was expecting. Egg rolls were tiny, and due to pricing being wrong online, I'm not sure how much they were but they were small and bland. Orange beef was breaded or something? It was not good. Sesame chicken came in massive pieces due to multiple pieces being breaded together. It was okay. A friend recommended to get the non breaded items, so might try again for some chicken and broccoli or something.

Cindy S.

Yelp
Although the take out was ready when I arrived as requested it was the worst tasting chine food I've had in awhile. Sesame chicken, dumplings, general Tao's chicken. How can they mess it up. Well they did. The flavor was awful and I went there specifically because the reviews indicated the best food. Oh and on top of it all... it was expensive. Definitely do not recommend and will never go back.

Jake A.

Yelp
Quality of ingredients is above average, but it's just a step above the other American Chinese restaurants around, and it loses a star because, it is not cheap. Got the famous scallion chicken, which was pretty good...fame-worthy, however, it is not. I ordered extra spicy and got no spice. Fried rice and egg rolls are nothing to write home about, as are the "homemade" sauces.

Alia D.

Yelp
Best Chinese that I've found in CLT so far. Good quality! Doesn't make me feel "heavy" like most Chinese food.

Precious B.

Yelp
This is our go to as of right now when craving Chinese in Charlotte. I still have yet to find a place that has that true Chinese take out taste. Taipei is always fresh and hot. They are are super friendly and we usually don't have to wait longer than 10 minutes for our order. This visit we got sesame chicken, general tso chicken fried rice and an egg roll. My boyfriend devoured him sesame chicken. Literally left nothing in the bowl. The general tso was surprisingly good. Not as spicy as I would expect and also had mushrooms which I didn't expect but nonetheless I enjoyed. Fried rice could use a bit more umph. Egg roll was okay. Wish it was a little bigger. It's a good place if the craving hits. We will be back.

Kalie L.

Yelp
Great Chinese food. Highly recommend the Crispy Scallion Chicken- it's a sweet sauce that's super tasty and one of their most popular dishes. I added broccoli and onion to mine and it was great. The portions are super large! Also had to get some crab rangoons as an appetizer. This is my new go-to Charlotte spot for Chinese delivery/takeout.

Maria S.

Yelp
I wanted to love it. Though Taipei Express is a few minutes away, it's been 5 years since we ordered dinner. The shrimp shu-man type appetizer was delicious - excellent texture and taste. The entrees, however, were greasy... heavy. A chicken dish and a green bean stir fry arrived steaming away in classic To-Go containers: black plastic bottoms with clear tops. Both over-oiled. Sweet and Sour soup had bland taste and sadly arrived in another typical plastic container. Hot soup in a plastic container that maybe just maybe is not free of various plastic-related carcinogens? Whoa.

Chandra J.

Yelp
After craving Chinese for a few days, I decided to check out Taipei Express while in Charlotte. Based on the glowing reviews, I was expecting some amazing food. However, this was not the case. I ordered the chicken with broccoli and fried rice. It came out pipping hot, and I dug in! Unfortunately, the chicken was super dry, and the rest of the vegetables lacked flavor and umph. Also, there wasn't a lot of sauce. The rice was tolerable, but it just wasn't much without the chicken and vegetables. The meal overall left me and my stomach wanting more. Three stars for the great customer service. If only the service could match the food!

Jeff C.

Yelp
Delicious Asian cuisine highly recommended. Don't miss out a wide variety of dishes, and great service.

Alexa V.

Yelp
First time trying this place and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is for your random Chinese takeout. I got the lunch special chicken and broccoli and the flavor taste just like PF Changs! Fair price too. $9. Friendly service. Clean environment. Will be my favorite local Chinese takeout spot from now on.

Jason B.

Yelp
Meh. Scallion chicken was fair, dumplings were fair, no utensils or napkins on delivery with Door Dash.

Antoinette E.

Yelp
We ordered in on Uber eats and I'd been dreaming of Chinese! And being from New York, I hadn't come across a good restaurant since we've been here. A colleague recommended it to me and I figured, let's give it a try. We ordered the fried wings, sesame chicken, fried rice, seafood lo mein, and crab Rangoon. Everything was delicious. It arrived still extremely hot, which was a pleasant surprise, since it was a bit of a distance. We will definitely return sooner than later!

Chantel B.

Yelp
I lived around here for years and never went . Ended up moving and just so happened to be in the area the other day . I came in around lunch time . I ordered the chicken and broccoli over white rice with an order of shrimp fried rice . I initially got it to go but I was starving so I sat down and ate . The food was HOT! I thought it was pretty good ! The chicken had a crisp to it and the broccoli was cooked well. I finished it all. I like the shrimp in the rice because it was a little crisp to it as well. Overall i enjoyed my meal. I will return .

Natalie P.

Yelp
A conveniently located Chinese restaurant with a big menu. My husband and I ordered from here on a weekday night. When I called in our order of: garlic eggplant, orange chicken, and chicken lo mein, I was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. Sure enough, by the time I parked in one of their parking spaces out front, my food was ready. For those dishes the total came out to about $30. The portion sizes were good and we had left overs for the next day. Overall, the quality of the food was good. Nothing blew my hair back but it definitely hit the Chinese food craving spot. One confusing thing I did note was that when I called in my order, the lady taking the order asked if I wanted spicy or no spicy on the eggplant and orange chicken. I said no spicy but wish I would have been given the option of a spicy scale. It seemed those were the only those two options. Friendly service and indoor seating! If you don't want to sit down to eat then I would recommend their take out.. it was steaming hot even when I got home.

Jamie H.

Yelp
They have a great take out business. Food is good but not awesome. They have good portions. We ordered takeout there for the first time a few months ago and felt that it was awesome! Food tasted very fresh string beans were not so soggy and the hot and sour soup was phenomenal. However, when we ordered today I felt like the food tasted different. I don't know if they have a new chef but the hot and sour soup this time was bland and everything just didn't taste as good as the first time. Wish they had better consistency.

Lisa Y.

Yelp
Three words for you. Hot. Spiced. Pork. I have lived less than two minutes drive from this place for almost 20 years and tonight was my first time ever ordering from there! I don't usually go for fast food type Asian food. But we were very impressed. Very yummy- and at a great price!

Bentley K.

Yelp
The best Chinese food in charlotte, hands down! All of their chicken dishes are really flavorful and use pieces of real chicken (not the mushy stuff you find inside some coated chicken at certain places). However, I DO NOT recommend their fried rice or dumplings, not the best...but everything else I've had here is delicious.

Kate T.

Yelp
With my last review in 2013, and having visited several times over the last couple years, Taipei Express definitely deserves an update review. After moving closer to the area, and not too many Chinese restaurants around I gave Taipai another visit, and since then have picked up and ordered several times. My go to order always includes a Vegetable Spring Roll and Fried Rice, sometimes chicken fried rice, sometimes shrimp fried rice. The spring roll is one of the best rolls I have had. Always fried to perfection with a perfect mix of cabbage and veggies. The fried rice is a generous portion and includes peas, carrots, onion and egg. I love the added onion to my fried rice. Most recently I have tried the Taipei Delight, a mix of chicken and shrimp with veggies in a brown sauce. The portion is nice with a generous amount of veggies including broccoli, carrots, snow peas, which I love. So happy I checked them out again and can say they are a good Chinese spot for pick up!

DeAndra E.

Yelp
The crispy scallion chicken is really good...though it's more crispy than chicken. Got the fried dumplings and would 20,000% NOT recommend. Super doughy and the pork on the inside was a bright, almost hot pink color through and through. I have never had dumplings that were so nasty and off-putting. Threw them away instantly, but should have taken a picture!

John H.

Yelp
Meh. We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Moo Goo Gai Pan. It looked good when we opened it up at home....but it was lacking in flavor and the quality of chicken wasn't great. Loved the water chestnuts!

Heather S.

Yelp
The most excellent customer service I've had in a long while... however, the food was terrible. Pepper steak, orange chicken, white rice, fried rice, and egg roll was our order. The food came out correct but could not have been more bland. The actual chicken wasn't dry but there was so little sauce it felt really dry to eat. The fried rice was flavorless, as was the egg roll. The pepper steak was the most edible but I would never want it again. One star for customer service One star for cleanliness I wouldn't recommend

Todd R.

Yelp
It's just ok. I'm not slamming it, it wasn't bad, it just didn't excite me enough for a higher rating. The food was slightly above average. The egg roll was bland, not sure what it was stuffed with. Fried rice is flavorless with a few frozen peas and carrots. Way too much breading on the generals chicken and no spice. Even for dine in they serve in styrofoam containers and tiny child sized plastic ware is provided for you to fumble with while taking tiny bites. The prices were just ok for todays world and to order you have to try to communicate through plexiglass and struggle to understand the employees through their silly useless masks which is even more of a challenge due to the Asian accent. Wound I return? Maybe, but it wouldn't be my first choice unless I found my self in the immediate area. They were nice and service is fast.

Orlando B.

Yelp
Have been ordering from DoorDash and it's incredible. The beef with garlic sauce is unreal. I think I have an addiction lol. Order it now!

Lauren K.

Yelp
The Garlic Chicken was fresh and oh so saucy you could tell it was garlic but not overpowering. Yess to the Orange Chicken! Great taste, not overly breaded and good portion size. The Pork Fried Rice could have been it's own meal! We got it thinking I wouldn't get rice with my dish but they gave white rice. Still glad I got a side of the pork fried rice. The Egg Rolls were small and not much filling at all - mostly fried breading. Same with the Crab Rangoon. It was all dough and little filling. Would have to say it's probably the worst Crab Rangoon I've had.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Saw a lot of positive feedback about this restaurant on Reddit when looking for Chinese take out. Haven't had any Chinese take out in Charlotte that I have absolutely loved yet, so I figured I would give this restaurant a try. We did a group order so it was quite a lot of items. Wonton soup, egg rolls, beef and broccoli, generals chicken, fried rice and crab Rangoons. The egg rolls are very small - I'm used to getting a much larger egg roll. Still tasted good but wasn't what I was expecting Beef and broccoli was fine. Crab Rangoons were terrible. Hardly any filling at all. You had to break it a part for one small bite of any filling and the rest was just wonton. Definitely would not recommend or order again. Generals chicken was just ok And the fried rice was also just ok- isn't your typical fried rice. It was fast and took no time to pick up. But overall probably wouldn't order again.

Irasema L.

Yelp
Consistently good Chinese food and service for lunch and dinner. Food is ready as scheduled.

Rondel G.

Yelp
Found myself working a block down and had good reviews. Very small for eating in but clean. Fast service and pleasant staff. Had a to go order and food was delivered so hot I had to wait 5 minutes to eat it. I would rather have my food hot and let it cool than served lukewarm. Overall great, fast, and inexpensive place to eat.

Mitch M.

Yelp
Paradoxically posting a review of what is probably my favorite Chinese takeout place to make a negative comment. If you're like me, you probably tend to the same items at your restaurants that you go to over and over. For many years Taipei Express has proven reliably excellent at General's Chicken, Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, Hunan Beef. For whatever reason, I wanted something different today. After scanning the menu, I decided to try Orange Chicken. It was underwhelming -- neither particularly orange, nor spicy (as indicated in the menu). There was plenty of good quality chicken, and there were both pieces of orange peel and hot peppers in the bowl, so if you want a kind of generic Chinese chicken dish, you'll be fine. You can ask them to add vegetables (extra charge) if that's important to you. Portions, as others have noted, are generous -- one dish (which comes with rice) will serve two or preemptively answer questions about what to have for lunch tomorrow.

Sean S.

Yelp
Excellent and consistent "cheap" Chinese food. Been going for years. Highly recommended

John Paul F.

Yelp
For those ordering online- Menu shown on website through Apple Maps is not up to date and reflects lower prices than actual

Zain K.

Yelp
I spent over a month in Charlotte, and generally found its Chinese food offerings lacking. In fact, the only good experience I had was here. They appeared to be doing very brisk business on the mid-week evening when I came, and had a number of people on staff to handle the order flow effectively. My steamed shrimp with mixed veg was plentiful (easily enough for two meals), tasty, and fairly priced, and I particularly liked that they offered brown rice at no upcharge.

Sherry N.

Yelp
Just so-so. Fried rice was flavorless with three carrot chunks and nothing much else.

Marie B.

Yelp
The BEST Chinese food in Charlotte! Everything taste so clean and fresh. Nothing was greasy or heavy, go during lunch they have a decent sized portion that could be saved for dinner! Customer service was quick fast and easy.

Ken G.

Yelp
I haven't even started this food and I'm already ticked off. I'm not home so we ordered delivery from Tai Pei Express. We thought it would be really good. Well... I just opened our delivery and they have forgotten to put eating utensils in the bag. Now we are having to scrounge for something to eat with. Pretty sure it will be cold, or at least not hot when we finally get to eat. Like I said, I'm pretty ticked off. Getting to look at this food with no way to eat it.

Matthew W.

Yelp
Nice people and good food. Scallops with snow peas with blackbean sauce ( special order) is the bomb! Y'all rock!!!

John H.

Yelp
In this COVID world, I've started to branch out and try different take out spots. I believe I've passed this place numerous times on Providence but never have been inside to check it out. They are delivery and take out only at this time, but it was super easy to call and place an order. Ordered some steamed dumplings and the crispy scallion chicken. The portions are very generous and I was able to stretch it for three meals even. Being on Providence, it's a prime location and easy to get in and out of (depending on which direction you are coming from). Taipei Express will definitely be in my rotation especially when I'm craving Chinese food. Excited to try more menu items. Looks like there are really great lunch specials (protein/main + egg/vegetable + fried/steamed rice).

Kelly D.

Yelp
Food was delicious and hot upon arrival - the portions were huge and loaded with real chicken and veggies! I highly recommend trying this spot to fulfill your Chinese craving.

Will T.

Yelp
It was good, nah mean? But I heard fortune cookie was the spot!!! I'm from cincy so I don't know the area.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Crispy scallion chicken, that's all you need to know. The dumplings, soup, and lo mein were all favorites as well!

Ivy S.

Yelp
Busy, busy, busy place. You have to stand in line even if you placed an order over the phone. Line moved pretty quickly. I absolutely love their wings (extra crispy), the crab Rangoon, and house fried rice. Even though the line is almost outside the building, they move pretty fast for taking phone orders and taking in house orders at the same time. I'll be back again and again.

LaShawn R.

Yelp
Taipei Express is a small and busy Chinese restaurant. The owner is usually on register and moves pretty quickly. I ordered the spicy orange, the lunch portion is very filling and comes with your choice of rice and choice between a spring roll or egg roll. I dined in this time around. My food took about 10 minutes to arrive and was brought to the table. There's about 8 tables, half were occupied. Parking is limited.

Meredith L.

Yelp
I had a really good experience getting Taipei takeout this past weekend. There aren't a lot of Chinese takeout options over in Noda so I decided to put in an order here and drive to pick It up. We ordered the General Tso's chicken, spicy, with white rice, vegetable Lo main, and the peppered steak with onions and fried rice. The food was still piping hot by the time I got home, which was great! The food had great flavor and I think the portions were great as well. Perfect to share with someone and still have left overs. My only qualm would be that the pepper steak had way more onions and peppers than actual pieces of steak. Also, the parking was a bit difficult. For a place that only does takeout and dining in, you would think they would have more options for parking off of a busy road. I will definitely order take out again!

Mina A.

Yelp
I have to say first if your looking quick service this is the place. I always order my food ahead of time even if it's my first time trying something from here usually never can go wrong. I love there fried rice the shrimp aren't so small like other places. I always love there sesame chicken which was something new I tried this time. They also always have great lunch specials going on which comes with protein, rice and a egg roll. I definitely recommend this location. If you go and don't see cars don't worry most people are picking up there food and heading home.

Skye B.

Yelp
I'm confused as to why this place is rated 4 stars. The crab Rangoon was 95% pastry with a smear of cream cheese the size of a thumbnail. The vegetable low mein tasted as though it had been reheated with vegetables thrown in for a can, except for the broccoli, that was slightly crunchy. General tso, the chicken was cooked tender, but the flavor wasn't very vibrant. It tasted like something I would buy in the freezer section at the grocery store and heat up at home. The only decent item we tried were the chicken wings. We used the sauce that was served with the crab rangoons to flavor the wings. Would not Recommend dining here if you want good Chinese food.

Michael S.

Yelp
Taste: We were craving good Chinese takeout and we were pleased with this experience. As pictured, I had the Crispy Scallion Chicken (mainly because I saw so many positive Yelp reviews about it) and I'd say it lived up to the hype. It was yummy. My only issue is I ordered it spicy and it just tasted sweet. May have been a busy night oversight. My girlfriend got the 2nd most popular Yelp contender, Sesame Chicken. She really enjoyed it, although did say it was a bit drowned in sauce. We also enjoyed hot and sour soup + crab rangoons, both of which were tasty. Oh and we were able to have 3 meals leftover from this, so expect a HUGE portion size! Service: Effective and efficient. Just like you seem to find in most Chinese restaurants, the order was done in about "10-15 min" Atmosphere: Not a dine-in spot. Walk in, pay, pick up your food. They are efficient and right now they are only allowing 3 patrons a time in for COVID protocol. Cleanliness: Totally fine. Kitchen actually looks surprisingly clean. Overall: Good spot for Chinese takeout around here. Very minimal rough things to say about this place, which is always fantastic! We will be back.

Evan G.

Yelp
Taipei Express on Providence Road in Charlotte is a great place to go for delicious food that is delicious and well prepared. I have been impressed with all of the orders that I have made from here. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you have the best meal.
