Chinatown Restaurant Crawl Shows Solidarity Amidst Unfounded Virus Fears | Eater Chicago

"A late-night Lakeview lounge where a security guard was shot while exiting, suffering six gunshot wounds and remaining hospitalized; the alleged shooter was later shot and killed in a standoff with police. We had an amazing dining experience at Tai's Restaurant! The Singapore Noodle dish was a standout - loaded with a generous amount of juicy chicken, succulent shrimp, and perfectly cooked egg. But the real showstopper was the Shrimp Salt and Pepper. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and full of flavor - it was absolute perfection! The portions were generous, the prices were reasonable, and the service was top-notch. We can't wait to come back and try more of Tai's delicious offerings!

Google
Prompt service, fairly clean interior and nice staffing. Let's talk about Tai's Bistro. Flavorful and quantity-packed Asian food that makes anyone's Asian grandmother proud. I went on a weekday evening to try the well-known salt & pepper pork chops (marinated starched pork, green peppers, jalapeno, garlic, onions, $15). It rose to the occasion and was very juicy and crispy on the surface. I paired it with a cucumber and seaweed salad (with crab stick, $8). Delicious flavor and undoubtedly fresh as well.

Google
I'm not sure where all the 5-star reviews are coming from. We tried three things--a yellowtail and scallion sushi roll, beef pho, and cashew chicken--and none of the dishes were great. Generally they didn't have much flavor. There was nothing wrong with any of the three-- in fact, they look pretty good in the photos--but they weren't that enjoyable to eat. Then there are the menus with no prices. You have to ask the cost for everything if you want to know. The beef pho with flank steak was $14.99 the day we visited, but the worker said the prices change frequently. And for that fairly high price, you pick up your food at the counter and then bus your own dishes. There were a lot of people working, and they were helpful. So I bumped the stars to 3 for service. We would not go back to eat there again, and we wish our $38 for dinner had been spent elsewhere on more satisfying food.

They custom made my meal so that its allergy free! The food here is incredible 😲 you will love it. A fantastic value for the money! Very nice staff :) very knowledgeable! My allergies are so severe that I rarely eat out, but, this restaurant changed that!!

Google
All I can say is wow. We randomly stopped by passing through on a trip and the amount of food for the price is insane. This will feed me for several days and price is about standard around where I live normally. Food was delicious. The beef skewers were outstanding. My husband got the beef mushroom dish and I got the red curry w/ chicken. The red curry was not the best I’ve ever had but better than many I would say I prefer the onions cooked more and that the sauce have more of the coconut milk sweetness but can’t be too picky at this price point. The milk tea w/rainbow jellies is my normal go to drink and that was also good.

Google
Neat place. Counter service with pager pickup. Pad Thai and thai red curry chicken were quite good with generous portions. Spring rolls were just ok and fairly greasy. Good selection of condiments available.

Regina H.

Google
I got the cashew chicken and the spider roll, plus the hot and sour soup! Everything was fabulous! Large portions for the price, and everything was made fresh after I ordered!

Google
Great menu selections! I ordered take-out & i picked up. Very casual high energy atmosphere. I had the Korean beef skewers, crab rangoon, seaweed cucumber salad, fried rice and passion fruit summer iced tea. I loved the beef, salad and tea. The flavors were different and amazing. Had a huge heap of rice. I was not thrilled about the uncovered styrofoam containers used for most of the order (my petty-peeve). Yes i ate the lettuce and greens in the styrofoam too. But, also loved the friendly service there which was so welcoming!🩷 So many more tastes to try there.😉

Yelp
What a great place!! We went for lunch after church on a Sunday afternoon and we were SO impressed!!! Huge portions, flavor bombs, fun atmosphere, and a big menu (something for everyone)! I got pho (and I'm a bit of a pho snob)...it was DELICIOUS!! Husband got a combo lo mein, it was HUGE. Mom got shrimp pad Thai, said it had more shrimp than she could eat. But my highlight was the spicy dumpling app...so unique, ginger-forward and big enough to share between the three of us. Will DEF be back soon! 10/10 recommend! I will say, it's better if you know what you're walking into. It's order-at-the-counter, and our meal was ready in phases. We decided not to be irritated about that. And it was a bit loud for us, but it's very near campus. So you know, When in Rome and all. But my goodness, please check this place out!

Yelp
A friend was in town and suggested we meet at Tai Asian Bistro to eat and catch up on the day before thanksgiving. Ordered crab rangoon (not pictured) and spring rolls. The spring rolls (pictured) were BURNT. Took one bite and could not eat anymore as they also tasted BURNT and overcooked . Their website states: At Tai's Asian Bistro and Sushi in Columbus, OH, everything is prepared with high quality, rich taste and fresh food waiting for you to be served." Yeah, not so much.

Yelp
This place is good for what it is. What is it, exactly? Enormous portions, mediocre food. And I'm definitely not against that, but if you're considering paying Tai's a visit, just go in with that expectation. If a lot of fairly decent food for not a lot of money is what you're looking for, definitely hit it up! If you're looking for high quality, look elsewhere.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
I think this is my second review for Tais but tried something new and had to share. I can always expect a consistent customer experience here, from opening the door to leaving. The Chicken Pho was a 10/10
google avatar

Aminah K.

Yelp
The portions are enormous, but less than average in taste. It reminds me of fast food asian food at the mall. Had a bit of a stomach ache from all the grease. If you're looking for that type of food this is the place.
google avatar

Maggie P.

Yelp
This is such a great place to eat. I live clear across town.... But I will make the 30 min drive to eat here. The prices are a bit steep but all the options I've had so far have been excellent!
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Love this place, one of my favorites in Columbus! Placed an online to-go order which was ready for pickup in 15 minutes even during the dinner rush. Food was delicious (always recommend the chicken pad thai which I ordered with crab rangoon). Serving size is massive too; usually enough to split or have 2 meals. Great atmosphere inside the restaurant, and a convenient location with ample parking. Will be back.

Yelp
Another hidden gem within the Columbus area. Back for my yearly visit! Love this restaurant as it serve some of the best Asian cuisine in the Columbus area. They offer many different Asian style dishes and I don't think I've had a bad one yet. Got the General Tso's chicken this time around. It has a great crunch with just the right heat with it. Note if you love spicy get them extra wet. If you're looking for some punishment get them extra wet and spicy. They loved to be challenged in the kitchen. Staff is quick, nice and ready to go. Both sides of the kitchen are always booming. Yes this place does have a small seating section for sushi lovers too. Most of the sushi's I've had so far have been pretty good.
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
Delicious food - lots of options to pick from. Friendly staff and quick service. Easy to find with lots of parking. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
A weird but good experience. Ordering: the place is kind of...chaotic. You walk in and there is an ordering kiosk/kitchen in the back. The menu doesn't have prices on it, so you're just guessing here. Get in line, place your order, be surprised at the total, and then you'll get a little light up disk thing that they will ping when your order is ready. Seating: see also: chaotic. The place is crowded with long tables, larger people or those in wheelchairs may have trouble traversing through the rows of tables and chairs. There is also a little bar to the side for sushi. Food: ok this is what made it a 5-star rating. The foooood! We got 2 meals and 2 appetizers to share. The shrimp pad Thai was amazing and the tofu curry was perfectly spiced with large chunks of tofu. The portions were HUGE! We also had an order of crab Rangoon and dumplings. Two meals, two apps, and three drinks ran us $67. Considering we took more than half the food home and ate it for days I consider it a good deal!
google avatar

Sammi M.

Yelp
Must visit for Pad Thai! I get the combination pad Thai, no pork sub beef. That's just my preference but it's a great pad Thai compared to others I've had. Not to mention the side of the portions is ridiculous. It feeds me 4 meals. Their noodle dishes definitely give the largest portions, but I've also tried the Mongolian beef and it's VERY good. I switch back and forth between those two dishes. You aren't going to Tai's for ambiance but more for the portions and diverse Asian menu!
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
I generally love my Tai Asian Bistro on West Lane Avenue but I've come to realize that there are just too many dishes on the menu and they don't do some of them well. On a positive note, I like their Vietnamese salad rolls. Wish the dipping sauce was peanut instead of hoisin. The sweet and sour....hard bb balls. Could not eat the dish even after putting sauce on it. The worst won ton soup EVER. Lots of bamboo shoots, little slices of chicken??, a little green vegetable and finally, three won tons!! Yes, three won tons. As my wife said, should have ordered the hot and sour soup!! Disappointing takeout.
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
If you want quick Asian food this is the place ! not like your home cook family meals but close enough. Food court style ,service was fast , large portion , love the boba . Since I moved here for a travel assignment this has been my go to after work.

Apsara K.

Yelp
Noodle was little soggy and tastes more fish sauce on the salty side. Service was great and the restaurant was clean wasn't to busy usually hard to find a set.
google avatar

Jose H.

Yelp
Fast food kind of place, always rush for a good reason. Price/portion versus quality ratio is phenomenal. Be ready to share unless you are on a hunger rush . Loved the Mongolian beef and the Chicken Orange !!!

Tramaine O.

Yelp
Big portions and fresh food. The staff was friendly and get the entrées out hot and fast.

Susan V.

Yelp
Not really what I was expecting....husband ordered the pepper steak and I ordered broccoli chicken. We were informed you cannot order half sizes. My broccoli chicken was decent although the broccoli was very undercooked and hard and I burned my tongue at least twice. I ordered the green boba tea but pretty sure it was just the milk tea...way too many bubble/tapioca balls in it. Husband said his food was bland. Probably won't return. It's nothing special.
google avatar

Barb H.

Yelp
I ordered the Saigon Rice Noodle Salad with chicken which is a lot like Vietnamese bun in the ingredients and flavor profile. In addition to the food shown in my photo, there was a container of dressing and one of chopped peanuts for garnish. It was perfect and everything was fresh and I got a huge serving which I ate for the next 2 lunches. It's fast casual with friendly and quick service. I love their food.

Earl O.

Yelp
The spring rolls were excellent, best I've had in the area. We got the shrimp in lobster sauce and split it. Brought home leftovers split that for lunch the next day. You get a lot of food. Excellent food and place. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
This was a very positive experience. Especially, we do not live in Cbus anymore, however we decided to re-visit this place. The food was great and accurate as well. I do think they can be stingy on sauces (we often order extra). The food was good though, fresh and our family order various items from sushi, hibachi, crab rangoons, sweet and sour shrimp and more. The sweet and sour shrimp was fantastic. We ordered online (easy) and they were quick to make the food.
google avatar

Alexandra E.

Yelp
Delicious! I ordered a Vietnamese sub and a bubble tea and it was about $16! Sub was spicy and crunchy, with so much flavor! The bubble tea was delicious! Place is super busy! I ordered pick up and it said 30-45 minute wait. Very loud when you walk in. Definitely a quick eat unless you're okay with a lot of noise. Will be back and luckily I work next door !

Yelp
I've been to Tai's a few times. It's a pretty popular spot. The order process is at a counter and then you seat yourself. I've had a few different sushi rolls, the pho, the miso soup, and perhaps a couple of other things along the way. The sushi is ok, not my absolute favorite place for sushi but they do have a lot of different options that I haven't tried. I definitely enjoyed the pho and miso soup a lot. The miso is heartier than most miso soups you'll find and filled with lots of greenery (seaweed? not sure). They definitely get busy around dinner time so I would advise going in for lunch or giving yourself a pretty generous window if you're ordering takeout. I'm sure I'll visit Tai's again soon and will report back on other menu options as I try them.

Matthew C.

Yelp
Went to order Singapore Noodles. It normally comes with chicken and shrimp. I don't eat shrimp so I normally substitute the shrimp for tofu. I was told their new policy requires them to charge me for extra chicken and tofu. I asked why I couldn't just substitute one for the other but was told that's just their policy. So for an order of Singapore Noodles, two egg rolls they were trying to charge me $29.95!! I declined and said no thanks. Wont be ordering from here again. Sad because I've been a customer of theirs for over 15 years. Their prices keep going up exponentially and their customer service keeps going down.

Jim S.

Yelp
wonderful food good price use of way to much plastic makes this restaurant no good for carry out. Sorry I cannot continue this abuse of our planet

Joanne J.

Yelp
The employee at the front counter was incredibly rude. I did not like my entree and asked for a refund. I did not want a replacement. After trashing my entree, he picked up his phone and intentionally ignored me. Upon asking him if he was ignoring me, he states that he doesn't do refunds. He eventually did refund my entree but I was appalled at how incredibly rude he was. We usually have great food here but I will never return.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Chinese food establishments in Columbus. I have been here many times. I decided to try the pot stickers and they were very tasty. I also ordered the sesame chicken but without the sesame seeds and it was amazing. Plenty of food for leftovers tomorrow. Order at the counter and your food will be made quickly. TVs playing in the background but you can easily carry on a conversation. This restaurant is always busy with carry out orders. This is not a fancy restaurant but the food is worth it.

Paree C.

Yelp
I always get the chicken pad thai, it's my absolute favorite and fried rice as a side is always a great choice, or even the white rice. My little brother also absolutely loves the spider roll sushi.
google avatar

Les R.

Yelp
I have always loved Tai's Asian Bistro from the moment I first dinned here. It has been one of my Top 5 favorite Columbus restaurants for many years. I had a craving for Pad Thai and we headed out to Tai's. Take it for what it is, but for me, this was not a good experience. Service was terrible, very disorganized and real disappointed in the flavor and in the serving size. Definitely a miss for this visit. I went with the Chicken Pad Thai and immediately noticed the portion size has decreased. It was also served in a plastic to-go container instead of the dine-in plates. The other guest in my party order Shrimp Pad Thai, and received a much larger portion on an actual plate. Very inconsistent and we have had these dishes many times. We had ordered right after each other and I for some reason I had to wait forever for my buzzer to go off with folks after me getting served to the point I thought they missed my order. Oh well, I will try again with another trip but if this was my first impression I would not return. Hoping this was just an off visit as I would hate to give up on this place.

Yelp
Truly a hidden gem! Moving here from Orange County I'm used to some of the best Asian food ever. I was referred to this place from my nail tech and I was so impressed! The food here is always fresh and the staff is very helpful! This will be my go- to in the Columbus area! Salt n pepper shrimp is soooo good!

Yelp
So, it's no secret that I have a love/hate relationship with Tai's Asian Bistro. Love some of their dishes, not so much for others. Mind you I haven't tried every dish. But lunch today was a good example. On the left, Korean Sweet & Sour Pork. What makes this dish Korean compared to their other sweet/sour dishes I have no idea. But it was probably one of the best iterations of SSP I've found so far in Cbus. Lean strips of pork meat in a very crispy deep-fried batter, onion, carrot, green pepper - the only MIA was pineapple. Sauce wasn't heavy and thick and fake red like most Chinese takeaways, it was just sweet enough and had just the right consistency. GOAL! On the right, Peapod Chicken. Essentially their version of Moo Goo Gai Pan. Visually speaking, amazing. Tons of white meat bird, crispy peapods, water chestnuts, bamboo, carrot, mushrooms in a basic white sauce. But alas - nearly zero flavor. Blandness is something that plagues Tai's in my opinion. Ingredients are generally fresh, portion sizes are positively elephantine, service is friendly and efficient most days, not to mention a freaking immense menu. But the chefs somehow seem afraid or unwilling to use seasonings adequately in some dishes. I've got 60 year old tastebuds and need more oomph, people! My plan? Wok hei this dish with some added soy sauce, MSG, garlic, shaoxing wine, white pepper and chicken powder to kick it up a notch. Then maybe it too will be amazing.
google avatar

Zack H.

Yelp
Chef was rude and ignorant, gave us the wrong review and blamed us and was super rude about it when asking for order he said he had no clue and just overall ruined the vibe
google avatar

Pari A.

Yelp
First time here, the crab Rangoon is really good. The shrimp fried rice is a HUGE flavorless portion.....UGH!! Staff didn't really seem to care if people were there or not. Oh well.
google avatar

Tara T.

Yelp
Love the late hours! Portions are huge can get 2 to 3 meals out of one chicken pad Thai.
google avatar

Tom P.

Yelp
This is true one of my favorite places to eat at. The food is always fresh and made to order. Today I ordered the beef and mushroom with the fried rice. It was outstanding, and let me add these portions are huge and can definitely be shared. Sorry no picture of the pork pan fried dumplings, however so good. The serving is 6 to a order which was perfect. The place is always busy and does a great carry out business. If eating in be prepared to walk into a line. They also have a fresh Sushi counter which my niece just loves, also made to order! This is a must try restaurant!

Rachel P.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the portions are huge! You can definitely share or have leftovers for a couple days.
google avatar

Pete B.

Yelp
Order at the counter and get a pager. It's not about the ambiance. Pan asian fare with huge portions, sushi, teas, beer but for me the attraction is the best pho in Columbus. A huge steaming bowl of healing and forgiveness. Able to save your beleaguered soul on a grey day.
google avatar

Rantoul D.

Yelp
The best thing about Tai's is the large portions. The worst thing about Tai's is the mediocre, generic quality of the food. It's not awful. But it's also nothing to write home about. Go. Enjoy. But keep your expectations in check!
google avatar

Abby R.

Yelp
Overall, food is your average quick service Asian food. Flavors are pretty good, and food is definitely hot and fresh- plus the servings are huge. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Service is just alright- didn't really seem to want to be talking to us when taking our order. Restaurant was kind of dirty, tables were being wiped but with the amount of foot traffic, the floors and everything else were just trashed. They did charge an additional dollar for every carry out container if you took your leftovers to go which seemed unnecessary.
google avatar

Diana P.

Yelp
If you're looking for a restaurant that gives you a mound of food, this is your place. Lol. That was the first thing I noticed when walking by people's plates. So much food! The menu is quite large - dim sum, sushi, and typical Chinese food entrees. The guy taking orders was killing it. Super efficient by running both registers himself. I ordered the teriyaki chicken with fried rice. Since I knew the portions would be huge, I suppressed my desire for sushi. Definitely ordering it next time though! It took about 8 minutes until my order was ready. They mistakenly used chicken instead of shrimp in my boyfriend's order, but they immediately caught it and remade it. They were very apologetic and friendly. My food was so yummy. Huge pieces of chicken and a very healthy amount of vegetables. It's the most amount of veggies any place has given me. The only complaint I have about the dish was the salt. It was sooo salty. Even the vegetables were salted - to the point where I could see it dusted on the side of the plate. I was chugging water for the rest of the day! They could cut the salt back by 75% and still be okay. But other than that, the food was great. They have stacks of to-go containers by the pick up counter, which you will need! The price to quantity ratio is excellent!
google avatar

Mazen H.

Yelp
I find it an interesting place. Sometimes it is quantity over quality. Some dishes better than others. Other factors might be how busy the kitchen is. There is a degree of inconsistency but it is not overly bad. The price point is higher than average but the amount of food makes up for it somewhat.
google avatar

EJ D.

Yelp
I remember this place back in the the day while I was in college at OSU. I went today and it is not the same anymore. The quality of food is bad, the fried rice does not taste like anything.
google avatar

Ronda D.

Yelp
Large portions of food done quickly with good service ! Food is always very hot and freshly made. It can get crowded in this small and I don't particularly like the seating with other groups. Just large long tables where you just sit wherever you want. I highly recommend dining in if you don't mind sharing tables. The food is always good here :)
google avatar

Clare C.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night around 8pm. Lots of free parking in the parking lot. The menu is large and has many good options. Lots of seating inside. Very easy to order and then get your food upfront. I was so surprised by the size of my meal! I think I could get 3 meals out of a entree for ~$12.50. Such a great deal. There was a lot of chicken with my meal and the fried rice was really good! I would definitely come back! A great dining experience!
google avatar

Gene W.

Yelp
Tai's formula seems pretty straight forward, ginormous portions of pretty tasty Asian food using good ingredients at an affordable price. I wouldn't say all their dishes were the best version that I've ever had. But the good quality and great quantity, plus vast variety of choices and the laid back dining area rates this place 5 stars. Like so many Asian entrees, one dish can feed 2 folks. Here, the entrees might feed 3 or 4 people! We ordered the Singapore fried rice noodle (came with at least 10 medium sized shrimp + chicken + 4-6 scrambled eggs), the Szechuan ground chicken chow fun (only slightly spicy), and 1 banh mi sandwich (ok). We also ordered 2 iced coffees, very strong and sweet. Total bill was mid-$40's. The only thing lacking in the entrees were veggies, but those we added when we reconstituted the leftover noodles (and there were plenty of leftovers). Great place for folks on a budget (e.g., students) who wanna steer clear of fast food. They also have a full complement of Japanese and Vietnamese dishes if you got folks in your party looking for variety. Seating is pseudo-cafeteria/ food court but not trashy.
google avatar

Payal P.

Yelp
I went here for dinner with my partner and their parents. We ordered four large dishes and crab Rangoon. Reviewing the vegetarian dishes: Thai red curry with tofu and cashew curry with tofu. The Thai red curry was delicious with onions, bamboo shoots, water chestnut, and eggplant. The dish was flavorful but lacked spice which you have to ask for on the side. The cashew curry was a lot of vegetables with a non existent sauce. This curry had fried tofu which was different from the coated tofu in the red curry. Both came with white rice or fried rice as an option. You get a pager when your food is ready. You seat and serve yourself. There are utensils and takeout boxes ready to go. I enjoyed not waiting on anyone serving us (SELF SERVE)! For the price point, amount of food, and quality I definitely recommend ordering a curry or noodle dish from here. I have leftover for days! No pictures but I will be back and will recommend to anyone looking for Thai.

Constance C.

Yelp
Craving hit for egg roll, chicken and veg lo mein and shrimp with lobster sauce so stopped for takeout. Avoided menu and just ordered. The staff handled the order perfectly. The eating and waiting area has a cafeteria feel to it. The portions are large. Next time I'll order a spicier noodle dish. The egg roll had a good thick crunch which was appreciated with a pureed filling instead of the crunchy veggies which was missed. I'll be back to try again.
google avatar

Michael U.

Yelp
A friend invited me to this place saying it was amazing. I obliged of course and when I pulled in I remembered that I had been there a few times. I worked around the corner for years and the office ordered from there. It was delicious then and it's delicious now. They are super super busy but they have the system down pat. The food comes out fast and the portions are huge! But, most importantly, it's all delicious. I'm so glad my friend suggested I "try" this place as it reminded me of it!

Ron H.

Yelp
You'd think this rather crazy if you've not been here, but the portions are sickingly huge. Really, it is off-putting. It is piping hot when it comes, but in all reality, cut the portion size by - 1/2. Taste in what we had, 4 different dishes was rather bland too. Bubble tea excelkent
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
I'm always bummed when I feel like I can't write a great review when I try a new restaurant, but in the interest of total honesty, that's unfortunately where I've landed with Tai's. I had the Fire Cracker tofu and was pretty underwhelmed with the flavor. It was all spice and no substance. My fiancé had General Tso's tofu and we agreed that both dishes were kind of bland. The tofu was chewy, not crispy, and the vegetables were still firm, as though they were barely cooked. Judging by how quickly we were rushed through the line, it wouldn't surprise me if our dishes were "done" a little too early. One Google review compared Tai's to mall food counters and honestly, I kind of agree.
