The Best Yemeni Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit
"This is a modern Yemeni restaurant inside the former Family Donut shop in Hamtramck that expertly serves the needs of the community. Expect plenty of traditional Yemeni dishes like lamb or chicken haneeth, gallaba, fahsah, and sautéed lamb liver. However, they also serve fattoush, wings, fries, a breakfast sandwich with eggs and white beans, and doughnuts. Taj Al-Yemen is a real melting pot situation that must be experienced firsthand." - Danny Palumbo
Paczki Day 2025: The Best Paczki in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit
"This Hamtramck doughnut shop pulls out all the stops on Paczki Day with classic flavors like custard, cherry, and chocolate cream. The shop uses vegetable shortening, so the pastries are halal. Things get tight in here on the big day so preorders are recommended and can be placed by phone." - Courtney Burk
Great experience at Taj Al-Yemen! The food was delicious, full of authentic flavors, and well-prepared. However, I found that the salt in some dishes was a bit low for my taste. That said, the service was excellent—the waiters were friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed. Overall, a wonderful place to enjoy Yemeni cuisine, and I’d definitely visit again

Food is great, I had a lamb fahsa with bread & a chicken ghalaba with rice, both were very flavorful. My complaint is the service is horrible, the waiter keeps forgetting the order and keeps coming back every 5 mins to ask what we had…. We went for iftar and got our food late… definitely need to work on customer service. The food is the only thing that’s good about this place …

I visited your restaurant, and it’s clear that if you’re not one of the regulars, you get treated poorly. The service was disrespectful, and the food was low quality.

Unfortunately, my experience at this restaurant was very disappointing.
When I sat at the table, I waited a long time for someone to take my order. Eventually, I was told that I had to place my order at the cashier. At the same time, another customer was told to sit down and that the staff would come to take the order at the table.
There is clear inconsistency in how service is provided, along with noticeable delays in preparing the orders and poor attitude from some of the staff.
Overall, it was an unsatisfactory experience, and I won’t be returning unless the level of service and customer care is significantly improved

I went to Taj AL-Yemen simply because it was open early and did not realize the space they took over nor how much variety they have.
1st this was a very famous breakfast spot in Hamtramck before the change of owners and I'm happy to say it still is. Very steady stream of workers coming in for a quick bite or grab coffee and something to go.
2nd the variety is wide and it's all very very good. I ordered fosoulia with egg, chicken galaba but it was too early for tandoori bread. I also got a mango lassi (yes I have to order it everytime I see it)
When I arrived I first drove past remembering the old spot then I double checked GPS. The inside layout of the restaurant has been redone, lots and lots of seating. You still have the doughnut counter but the I noticed Burek, whenever I see Burek I have to order it they have feta and spiced beef. It's super fresh and still warm at 7:15 am.
There's another hot food case, lots of choices but I saw the East African/Western Arabian (Arab/Swahili) style sambosas (yes with the B!) and of course I had to get 6 of those with the spice shake.
Additionally they have the same Arab/Swahili style sesame + honey crackers so I had to get some of these as well.
FINALLY I'm looking and they have the tastiest looking Saffron Rice and it was too fresh to pass up and a medium size box also had to come with me.
Now when I say I bought a lot of food I really mean I bought a lot of food. With tip it was only $70 and I'll be eating for days.
So happy to have found this gem in Hamtramck that opens up super early on my 2nd day of vacation. There's too much good food, the doughnut also look amazing. I'd say you have to go for the samBosas alone.

I ordered the fassolia and was severed the foul. When confronting the staff and the chef I was told I ordered the wrong item. Their menu clearly states fassolia is severed with red beans tomatoes and onions. Completely disheartening experience. I’ve been here a few times but the staff and chef here don’t know what they are doing clearly.
I recommend going to Yamani Café or Sheba Café if you’re looking for authentic yamani cuisine.

Their foods of all time (mornings only) is good for breakfast, but today I had to dine In and honestly the Qalaba with one bread is horrible, the bread wasn’t hot and wasn’t fresh , so be aware for next time people for dining in during their rush hour around afternoon they tend to give you anything and not with care and attention to their customers when eating!

Yelp
It's Taj Al Yemen formerly Family Donut corner of Caniff and Conant in the heart of Bangel Town Hamtramak. The most reasonable price any Middle Eastern restaurant anywhere, price on most items 50 percent cheaper. A full Yemeni menu and still has Donuts and get this Albania Burek
Burek is known as the street food of the Balkans. Got the last one filled with Cheese outstanding Delicious . A full house two sides of dining rooms. Yelp
The food was exceptional I had the best salad ever and it was vegan by design. The way I was able to receive great customer service and recommendations was commendable. Definitely a new fav spot for me and the girls when we want something fresh and light . We are so fast I didn't get a picture and the vibes were dope as well
