The Best Indian Restaurants in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"Ask a local where to find the best Indian food in Nashville and Taj will likely be near the top of the list. This south Nashville restaurant recently moved from its Nolensville Pike location to newer, fancier digs nearby, but it’s still one of Nashville’s most popular places to dive into some chicken makhani, goat vindaloo, and lamb rogan josh. There’s a bit of a wait during peak dinner times, but the lunch buffet keeps things moving." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

Okay, y'all need to know about this amazing Indian place! Seriously, it's a total hidden gem in Nashville that not everyone knows about. They have the most delicious food, and the buffet is incredible, offering a wide variety of dishes. You absolutely have to check it out if you're craving some flavorful Indian cuisine. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Tried their Tawi special, Chicken karahi and butter naan. We really liked the naan that we ordered more later. It was really good, soft and one of the best naan I tried ever! Their chicken karahi was also very delicious. It was not like other Indian restaurants we tried. It tastes very similar to home style chicken karahi. They serve halal meat. Service was also excellent and very professional. Will visit again next InshaaAllah.

Great Buffet for only 15 dollars including tax. My coworkers love this place. Great vegetarian options. Papad is good and their Malai Kofta is great. I didn't like their Palak paneer much. Their naan was okay. Loved the lemon rice. Nice dessert options with Gulab Jaman and Kheer. I wish they had more tables for larger groups of people. You can eat a lot of food in this buffet that will make you sleepy afterward.

Google
Vegetarian food was not at all enjoyable. They added ridiculous amount of green chills when I asked it to make it spicy and it was burning down my throat. I did explicitly mention them not to use chilli to spice it up and I would instead prefer a normal one but they failed to honor that. The naans were not even warm and aloo tikki were half cooked. The service was good though. The waiter took the curry back to kitchen without hesitation, saying he will get it fixed but nothing changed much.

Google
Enjoyed the Buffet Lunch, good options, great pricing. For Vegetarian Buffet, you get appetizers, three curries, two flavors of rice, salad, chutneys and dessert (gulab jamun and mango faluda). Staff is really prompt, as soon as you are done with plate, they pick from your table. Only missing part, they don’t serve unlimited Naan, breads served in buffet is limited to one!

Google
We orders chucken 65 and chilli fish and taj special biryani only the fish is good. And the South Indian people maynot like the food. No proper flavors . Atmosphere is good.

Google
Excellent Indian buffet with a great selection. I've been made aware that the menu items change periodically, and all the available buffet items were delicious. The atmosphere was great as well with plenty of golden/bronze colors throughout. Highly recommend this if you're in the mood for Indian food.

This place was recommended online and we're glad we went. The decor and atmosphere were both excellent. The appetizers were great as well as the entrees.

Yelp
Got: Lunch buffet ($13) - Lamb/goat (forget which one) saag, chicken tiki masala, chicken curry, naan, paneer curry, chicken biryani, yellow daal, pakora, etc... Price: $13 lunch buffet, didn't get the al carte items but seemed to be in $12-$18 range Value: 9/10 for lunch buffet Good array of American Indian food for the buffet. There were 3 types of rice, pakora, tandoori chicken, fish fry, salad bar, 7-8 trays of curry, couple of desserts. The interior is well decorated and clean with a bar area. The servers were attentive and quick to bring water and naan from the kitchen. I stopped at Taj Indian on a time crunch. I had around 30 minutes to fully enjoy the buffet before catching my flight. Sat down around 11:30 am and 60% of the tables were already full with lunchgoers. Food was hot, spiced, and comforting to the soul as it rained outside in humid TN. The paneer was in a cream sauce and tasted similar to the chicken tiki masala. Different options for rice gave endless combinations of flavors with different curries. The standout item was the tandoori chicken and the paneer. The chicken was smokey and charred without being dry. It was still flaky, and succulent, yet smokey with its characteristic flavor. The paneer was creamy with the hints of acidity and sweetness from the tomato pulled the dish together. It was rich without being overly heavy. The naan came out from the kitchen in a basket. This is where I thought some improvement could be helpful. The naan was warm but not hot. Tasted like it sat for a little while. It was fine but was lacking the crispy outside and gluten-chewy, fluffy, soft inside. Overall, would come back. Naan could have been better but maybe it was a one-off. Great value for a $13 lunch buffet that warms the body and soul . Will be back next time I'm back in TN. PS. The food was delicious enough to where I was able to try most of the items and eat my fill to catch my flight. Good food = eat fast

Yelp
Had Indian food with some friends for the first time ever and I could say it wasn't a bad experience. As we went for dinner, I will point out that the prices are average/on the expensive side (in my opinion). With that note, we tried numerous of dishes I wish I taken a picture - but it was delicious for the most part! The men's bathroom was not the cleanest in my opinion and would have appreciated for it to be a bit more upkept. Service did take awhile for the food to come out, and I would say it was ~decently~ business but was far from being slammed. My friend also mentioned that when it comes to service - typically it may seem very "blunt" and a "straightforward" interaction rather than a conversation and exchanging "you're welcome" and "thank you." After this being pointed out, I can definitely see what he was referring to. I also asked for another cup of water and they simply did not get back to me, until I asked the server 2 additional times. Not to mention, but we needed an extra pair of utensils and getting our hands on this seemed too complicated (server just didn't get back to us once again) so we just took a set we saw at a table nearby. You can notice the staff not being very welcoming so it takes away from the experience. (personally - if my friend was not there to introduce me to the culture, I would rather have spent my money elsewhere)

Yelp
Is it fully authentic? Nope. Do I still love it? Absolutely! The weekend lunch buffet at Taj is hands down one of my favorite comfort meals in Nashville. 11-2:30 pm Saturday and Sunday, $13 of (primarily) Americanized Indian food. The new Taj location is a dream: plentiful parking, beautiful spacious interior that means even when they are slammed, they probably have an extra free table. I tend to go on the earlier side of lunch for less of a crowd, and they always seat us quickly and have plenty of options for the pure vegetarian or meat adventurous. My favorites on the buffet items are typically their off-menu items that seem to only appear at the buffet: the mushroom Manchurian, moong dal, and any vegetarian palya have been consistent favorites. I can also never resist the chicken 65 or butter chicken. They add so much unnecessary red dye to their meat items but they are still so addictively tasty. Service can be hit or miss here; sometimes (even if not busy) it's the end of my meal before I see my plate of fresh naan but when serving a dining room this large, I think some of that is to be expected. Please plan to need at least a two hour nap after your meal - but it's all well worth it.

Yelp
The Buffet is well stocked, fresh and fairly priced. This is a much nicer location than where they used to be. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
I know my plate looks messy here (i like to mix my food together) but this place is a 10/10!! I enjoyed everything on the plate! I like that its buffet style which gives you an option to try whatever you want, and I quite literally enjoyed what I got. Its super pretty inside, the service was amazing, and the garlic naan (not pictured) was also a 10/10. I definitely will be coming here again in the near future!

Yelp
Loved this restaurant! The service was quick and the food was great. I would highly recommend going here. I loved the large selection of items to choose from, not just your standard butter chicken and tikka masala. Honestly, the tikka masala was my least favorite. I loved the green chili chicken (can't remember the name of the dish) and the mango chicken. Would recommend sharing the mango chicken and pairing it with another savory dish because it was quite sweet. The chili chicken was cooked perfectly. Spice level here is on par with the culture. If you don't like things hot, get the mild. Medium was great for me because I like some spicy, but anything more than that would have been too much I think. Their chutneys were great too. 10/10 would recommend.

Linda H.

Yelp
The lunch buffet is consistently delicious, and plenty of it. Waiters and staff are hard-working and friendly.
google avatar

Amber A.

Yelp
Got the chicken tikka masala and a piece of naan bread! It was really really tasting. The service was pretty good and the food came out fast. They also provided some chips and sauce for the table at the beginning which was a nice touch. The restaurant is pretty large, clean, and there's a large parking lot! Again, food was yummy! Some really good tikka masala!

Yelp
First time trying Indian food. I got the lamb curry as a recommendation from the waiter. It was delicious an I enjoyed the spices. Though I wasn't a fan of the meat samosa it was very ginger tasting but all together fresh An the garlic naan was delicious an fluffy.

Yelp
Best Indian Food in Nashville. Beautiful new location. Our favorites are the Vegetable Samosas, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, and Palak Paneer.

Yelp
Best Indian buffet I've ever had. Hands down. Huge selection and everything was hot ,delicious and kept filled on the buffet. Plus it was packed so they were obviously working hard to keep it that way. No pics because...hungry. lol. Plus Too many folks in front of the buffet Even so the layout makes for almost no waiting.

Yelp
Service is excellent and food is always hot and fresh. I've been 3 times and even have taken family me to try it out.

Yelp
Excellent food, Buffet so clean, Great atmosphere Great service Easy in and out good parking

Yelp
This was a great spot to try many Indian Cuisines! It has such a luxury ambiance! It has more than 7 pans of hot food, and a salad bar.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Great food and very nice people. A decent buffet even though it's smaller it had all of the good stuff. Just a nice quaint atmosphere with clean surroundings

Larry A.

Yelp
The lunch buffet is great. I love meeting friends here for an afternoon hang. The buffet is always abundant and fresh.
google avatar

Tahseen H.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here so I can only comment on the quality and taste of the food rather than the service. The food itself was quite good however it definitely was not the most authentic Indian food you would find. I received the exact spice level I wanted which was a great plus (some places are iffy with it) but some of the food felt more bland as well. But it was good regardless.
google avatar

Rick J.

Yelp
Tried this place today for their lunch buffet. Not my favorite Indian restaurant but there were some really good dishes. Tables were crowded together and sitting was a little awkward due to the base of the table. It's worth a try if in the area.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
The food was delicious. There was no wait and will definitely come back to check out the lunch buffet.

Rag P.

Yelp
Food: Liked: Chana Masala, Baingan Bharta. Medium spice level was just right. I absolutely hate it when they add semi-cooked green peas in bharta. This one was good. Didn't have much of a Smokey flavor but was pretty good. Chana masala was nice also. OK: bhatura, tandoori roti, masala chai. Chai was good, not too strong, not overly milky, not overly spicy. Would have put it in the don't like bucket but don't feel like dinging them on that. Liked that bhatura was not too oily but I'd have liked it to have some crispy bubbles in the crust. Roti was just ok. Didn't like : Papad they brought out (complimentary) wasn't fresh, it had lost the crispiness. Perhaps the high humidity played a role. But if you're running a restaurant, this isn't something you should pass on to paying customers. Hated: service! Non-existent. Borderline rude waiters. It's almost like you're doing them a favor eating at their restaurant.

Yelp
The new location is awesome. This is top 2 Indian cuisine in Nashville. We love the lunch buffet. Service is really good. This is a go to spot when we want to go out but don't want to make a decision it is always a great time and good food.

Shawn W.

Yelp
The food was delicious. However, the staff was not very welcoming. It seemed as though they didn't want to serve us. I'd rather spend my money where my business is appreciated.
google avatar

Cassady L.

Yelp
This place is incredible. By far the most authentic Indian food we have found so far. They bring warm Naan to the table, the mango Lassi was delicious, and there was lots of choices at the buffet. We will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible Indian Food at TAJ!!! Authentic & well seasoned to taste! A family favorite restaurant!!

S B.

Yelp
Consistently one of the best Indian restaurants in town, even at their new location. The ambiance at the new location is more upscale inside. The food is still good as before. They've worked out the issues they had the first few weeks after opening at the new location, so give them a chance. There are multiple servers who work together to provide you service, so the service model is different from typical restaurants where you have one dedicated server.
google avatar

Rachel O.

Yelp
PERFECT. If you want a super flavorful, spicy, and filling meal, this is the place. Best Indian food I've had in years! The service was impeccable, and the restaurant is clean and beautiful. My husband and I were so happy and Taj has been added to our list of favorites!
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
We went with a big group of approximately 20 people and they accommodated us and it was great! Everyone was even able to pay separately. Great food (I had the butter chicken), great service, and a great time. Will be back for sure!

Clayton Y.

Yelp
Food is very good. Service excellent. Nice and modern and clean. Love the naan n sauces. The vegetarian potato balls in a creamy sauce. Was great.
google avatar

Lena P.

Yelp
If you want fancy and ambiance, this place is not for you. If you want good food- come here by all means. This place was very busy and we waited for food just a tad bit longer than usual, but it was worth it! Starting from fresh soft pakoras, followed by fragrant goat kadai and paneer masala with naan, every bite was amazing! We couldn't stop eating and ended up overeating! No regrets though! We will be back for sure!
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant! My favorite Indian cuisine in Nashville. The new location is clean and modern. They have a wonderful lunch buffet and I've never been disappointed when ordering ala cart or take away. Fresh and flavorful... I want some right Taj right!
google avatar

Sylvia R.

Yelp
My husband and I just stepped off a flight from NY and I had a hankering for an Indian meal. It was rather late in the evening and this place was the closest to the airport. We ordered our standard which is "shrimp tikka masala" The food was okay, we've had better. Dipping the naan into that sauce was absolutely yummy. The meal satisfied our cravings and we appreciated their late hours.
google avatar

Penelope B.

Yelp
I would not recommend the buffet. Every dish tasted the same - kind of a fake Smokey flavor, the regular menu might be better but when the wine and nan are the best part of the buffet don't think I'll bother trying it. I SO wanted to like this place. The decor is nice enough and they had a lot of customers but just not for me. Service was ok.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
I can't recommend this more! It is amazing. Wonderful food, tasty, great environment, top notch service, we had a great meal. If you are in the mood for great Indian food - this is the place.

Cooper G.

Yelp
Excellent lunch buffet. Loved the chicken 65 and the biryani. I will be returning very soon!

Vivian B.

Yelp
5 times we have waited an hour for our pick up order. Let you customers know an accurate time. During Ramadan longer waiting matters.

Clay R.

Yelp
Variety of highly seasoned Indian dishes served on a buffet. The service was great and the wait staff were attentive and well dressed. The restaurant was really nice inside and very clean. The price was very reasonable.
google avatar

Alena B.

Yelp
Loved this place!! Really was craving some Indian food and found a new favorite dish: Lamb Korma! Super flavorful and satisfying

Jabari S.

Yelp
Really really good food! I enjoyed it a lot. I felt there was sometimes more grease than I would like at times but very delicious.
google avatar

Meghin D.

Yelp
Taj India was really good for the price we paid for the lunch buffet. I think the lunch buffet is more directed towards people who have never had Indian or tried Indian. The spice was very mild. I did try some new dishes tho which were fantastic they just ran out very quickly on the popular items. Inside is small but very open and perfect. The fresh naan was spit on crunchy on one side and soft and fluffy on the outside. The buffet had a wide arrangement. A salad, some papadam, and all sorts of different dishes, one was a vegetable meatball in like a korma sauce (had cashews and raisins) and that was honestly my favorite on the buffet. They ran out of it very quickly. My next favorite was the paneer tikka masala and hocus was firm pieces of cheese cooked in the tikka masala sauce and it was delicious. The chicken tikka masala was the same as any other Indian restaurant in the area. The Gulab Jamun were very sweet to finish the dish with, I didn't see any Kheer on the buffet but that was ok. The tandoori chicken was delicious (all dark meat but I prefer dark meat). But honestly my favorite was the vegetable meatball thing, it wasn't like a fake meatball it was almost like a round samosa in a korma sauce and had some spice to it and it was really delicious. Overall I will be back but I wanna try dinner so I can order off the menu and get the spice level I would like. Great service as well.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Always fantastic food here. My favorite is the Chicken Khorma. They do such a nice job, the chicken is always so tender and never over cooked like so many Indian restaurants.
google avatar

Casey C.

Yelp
Unassuming exterior, dark (somewhat dingy) interior, but the food was fantastic! We ordered chicken kebabs and 3 different chicken dishes: butter chicken, cashmere chicken and chicken kitar (sp?) Wine selection was lacking, which is why I rated 4 rather than 5 Will be back to try more things!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a hidden gem and I am flabbergasted I have not been here before today. From living in Chicago for 18 years, it is hard to find amazing Indian food, but finally did at this spot. We tried a variety of dishes and all were phenomenal. They bring you a lentil cracker (very light and airy) with several condiments and each have their own unique flavor and all are delicious. Next, we shared the tandoori paneer (mine and my husband's favorite), lamb vindaloo and Hakka noodles with garlic Naan. Every single item left us wanting more. All were great flavor and we had varying spices (medium to spicy) and it was perfection. The mango lassi was the perfect ending. Definitely our new favorite Indian restaurant and cannot wait to return.

Parth D.

Yelp
I went to the Harding place Branch and it was one the worst Indian food I ever had. In bugget there were many things and everything was equally bad. waiters were rude and only thing good was ice water. good ambiance shit food
google avatar

Donald R.

Yelp
My wife and I tried this place because it was close to the airport and was highly reviewed on Yelp. However, we find it to be "good." We were seated quickly, and someone came over and provided a set up (napkins, silverware, water, etc) quickly, and someone else provided those black sesame seasoned crackers with sauce quickly. Then we waited...and waited. I motioned to someone who looked like the manager. He motioned to someone else, that became our server, albeit not a particularly pleasant one. I pointed to the Singah beer and asked if it was Indian beer. He said it was Indian beer. You can see by the photo that it is Thai beer, so that didn't go as planned. Both of us had the Shrimp Tika Masala and one order of naan bread. The bread was a bit thicker and more bubbly than I've experienced before. The Tika was mild, as we requested, but not as tasty as other places I've been. All subsequent service was very good though. I'm no Indian food expert, but I think I'd try others in Nashville before I returned.
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
Very tasty. Love it! As with all Indian it's pricey but worth it. I've had many times now and will continue to go back:-)
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
The best Indian food in town and enjoy the new location. The lunch buffet is extensive.
google avatar

Pamela D.

Yelp
Food is always hot and delicious. They are friendly and keep the restaurant clean. Always great service here.

Kate R.

Yelp
-Mom liked the Cashmere Chicken & Chicken Korma -Chicken Curry was great - the roti was alright -The Naan was fantastic!

Useless I.

Yelp
The thing about Taj Indian - it's always good. Really good. But sometimes, it is downright magical. This makes it difficult to pick a rating, but I think they should be rated on their consistent performance and the times they hit the ball out of the atmosphere. I'm not taken to waxing poetic about restaurant food. It's good; it's pretty good; not that great, and so on. But the worst day for the classically trained chefs at Taj is the best day for most other places. And when they're batting 1000, the food actually leaves you in a state of satisfied wonderment. Never seen anything like it. The straight-up foodies I know that have been don't have the words to explain it. Roll the dice and come here. You literally can't lose, and you might win really big.
google avatar

Deka S.

Yelp
The place can set about 50 people at the same time. The first time I went there I got the lamb chops it comes with different rices that is also cooked with meat too and OMG it is so good. You can basically order anything and it will come out amazing just make sure you ask your level of spicy because Indians don't play about their heat. Don't forget the mango lassi, so rich, sweet some of you it might ruin your appetite if your that type save it for dessert. Enjoy :)
