"Opened in 1982, Taj Mahal pioneered regional Indian cuisine in New Orleans, expanding to Magazine Street with the opening of Nirvana. The menu is vast, including standard dishes, vegetarian, tandoor roasted meats and seafood, and specialties from the south, including uthappam, a type of dosa made into a pancake and topped with coconut chutney, vegetables, and chili." - Beth D'Addono

"Another restaurant founded by the Keswani family, this Metairie location is run by son Anjay. The menu touches down all around the Indian table, from curries to tandoor roasted meats along with a slew of vegetarian options. Expect authentic flavors, reasonable prices, and a setting that is warm and inviting." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

Yelp

Yelp
I think we have found our new favorite Indian spot in Metairie. Our server, Antonio, was great, very nice and attentive. He recommended the SINDHI ALOO TIKKI appetizer and we absolutely loved it. We will definitely be back to try other things in the menu.

Yelp
We went for lunch for restaurant week, but the owner was really sweet and told us they would be continuing daily specials throughout the summer for lunch. We shared four entrees. All were really tasty. Not much heat so I would ask for spicy next time. The lamb curry and sage paneer were my favorites! Service was good, but it did take a little while. I went on my lunch break and it took about an hour and a half. The place it cute. Nice big tables with traditional Indian vibes.

Yelp
Very good service, quiet, beautiful, and great atmosphere. The food was unbelievable, it was amazing and I recommend this place to anyone

Yelp
Super happy we finally got to check this place off of our list. Stopped in on a Saturday night around 7 and it wasn't super busy, which is what I'd prefer. Our server was the right amount of attentive and made a recommendation that turned out really good. We haven't had Indian food since we moved here over 3 years ago and this place hit the spot. The winner of the night was chicken Tika masala followed closely by the chicken tandoori. We didn't love the lamb byriani but it still wasn't bad, maybe just a bit dry. We'd definitely come back.

Yelp
Hadn't had Indian food in a while and boy, was I glad I had it that day!! So good. Chicken Tikka Masala and the garlic naan were off the chain! (Do people still say that?! Probably not. I'm a dork.) Definitely worth the visit.

Yelp
Delicious Indian food in the heart of old Metairie. If you are looking for an authentic dish, this is the place for you. Not only is the food delicious, but the service is fantastic. Our waiter, Arun, was patient with us as we tried to decided what to get and was always making sure we had everything we needed. Great place!

Yelp
I visited taj mahal during restaurant week. The food was so so good! Lamb korma and samosa chat were the stars. Service was great! Antonio was our sever. He was so attentive and provided top notch service. We'll certainly see him next week.

Yelp
Solid Indian food in a casual setting w good service. The menu is massive and I recommend multiple trips to sample everything.

Yelp
The only reason I'm giving this one star is because tonight I found out I'm allergic to cashews, crazy right. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala and my mom had the butter chicken. The one star isn't because the food was nasty, of course I wouldn't know because the second it ate it I was feeling woozy, the one star is because the menu neglected to list that the CTM also contained cashews. Some items on the menu lists that but neither of our items stated that. So this is a warning to anyone who orders in the future.

Yelp
First things first! The restaurant is GORGEOUS!! There are so many beautiful, unique decorative pieces of art that really highlight the beauties of the culture. Right when you walk in you're hit with so many delectable scents of the fresh food they are preparing for everyone. Even the table setting and chairs made us feel like royalty. The bathroom was clean and glorious. There are a lot of restaurants here that don't put half as much effort and care into the settings but this place went above and beyond. Our server, Glorio, was so kind, patient, knowledgable, and very attentive. The food was also so so so delicious and very affordable. We could barely walk out we were so full!! Do yourself a favor and come by because this place will nOt disappoint

Brian M.

Yelp
I have been coming here for many years. They have so many vegan options and are very accommodating to vegans and vegetarians. The atmosphere is always pleasant and love the aromas that linger from the kitchen. The service is top notch and the food is amazing!

G C.

Yelp
Today I went to Taj Mahal for the first time with a couple of friends. It was lovely. Glorio was very helpful, and the food was tasty. 5 stars. Will return.

Tom S.

Yelp
Oh hell yeah! This is our go to for Indian foo! Wonderful food and great people! Ruby says hell yeah!

Hassan S.

Yelp
It is a bit of a drive from the city but very worth it. Came with a group and this was the only Indian restaurant out of the four that we called that would take a reservation for 6 on a Sunday, so liked them off the bat for that. The seating and dining area were cozy. The service hood. I got the saag paneer which was great. The garlic naan was in point. Also got samosa chaat which was tasty but just a little dry. Also got gulab jamun which was interestingly served cold. Only complaint is they do nickel and dime you, we asked for papers and they brought us a plate with peppers and a quarter onion (see pictures) and they charged us $5 for that. We only saw this later after expensing the receipt. Definitely liked the food but throughly examine your receipt, would of been five stars if the dessert was served warm and if the charges were more appropriate.

Yelp
This place is a staple for us. Have been ordering from them for years and will continue to order from them for years to come. The Lamb Pasanda is my favorite. The chicken tikka masala is my husband's favorite. But everything I've had has been delicious!

Adam C.

Yelp
Good service and food was excellent , highly recommend this place if it's your first time trying Indian food. Nice quite setting and perfect for a date or friendly reunion

Michelle B.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and we were so glad to find an authentic Indian restaurant off the beaten path. The food was delicious and our server Glorio was nice and very attentive and the food came out very fast. Would absolutely recommend!

Jannah S.

Yelp
I absolutely loved my food the chicken biryani was amazing. Very moist and full of flavor I got veggie samosas and naan too everything is amazing and large portions. My server Arun did a great job and the food came out very fast! 10/0 recommend

Anna B.

Yelp
Man...very disappointed. This used to be my go to Indian food place when I lived locally years ago. Moved back recently and ordered a large to go order. To my surprise it wasn't as tasty as it used to be. Each dish was very sweet and absolutely no spice at all. It all tasted the same. The meat dishes had far more veggies than actual meat. $80 for less than mediocre Indian food. Disappointing to say the least.

Amarachi U.

Yelp
Best Indian restaurant in Metairie/NOLA! My server Antonio was very accommodating and very kind. I'll definitely be back soon.

Aaron R.

Yelp
Delicious food Kind staff Cozy inside Would highly recommend this place. Food was delicious. Portions are huge and the staff was so nice.

Hailey M.

Yelp
Food was great! One of the best Indian restaurants in the city. Service was quick and Glorio was very nice. Chairs are also really cool and comfortable!

Genevieve F.

Yelp
I came in here to get Dosa (a southern Indian food which is extremely close to my heart) and was told the southern Indian food was currently unavailable. Boo! I'm nothing if not a god sorry so in ordered and then they brought me Papadum, which is an extremely crispy cracker usually made from nuts or sesame flours served with a nice and sweet and spicy chutney. I ordered Dal Makhani, which is dark with cardamom, butter and curry leaves. I didn't even know there was such a thing as curry leaves so I HAD TO TRY it! Okay, The fall over rice was spicy and yummy and packed full of flavor. The onion kulcha wasa thick bread stuffed with onions. This meal was extremely filling and perfect and worth every calorie.

James L.

Yelp
Butter chicken, lamb dish paneer eggroll, looking appetizer rice, and their bread. All was good. Inside looks much nicer than the outside. Service was good.

Mirabelle Z.

Yelp
Best Indian food in New Orleans!! The food was delicious and staff was extremely welcoming. Antonio and Anila were especially very sweet. thank y'all for a great time!

Karen K.

Yelp
We decided to come here after one of our first places was closed. It did not disappoint. My friend was VERY impressed by the chairs and I can see why. They were vibrant. The food was spectacular though. I love samosas so we had those for our app and did three main entrees - Saag Panner, Chicken Makhanwala, and lamb vindaloo. Of course ordered two orders of garlic naan.

Tina N.

Yelp
Antonio was our server! He was really great!! It was our first time here and food was delicious .The ambiance is really nice. Will be back!!

Joseph L.

Yelp
The entire experience was superb. the cuisine is authentic and skillfully done. The service and concern for us to have an enjoyable experience was exceptional. ambiance is peaceful and relaxing. we have visited several times and the experience is consistently pleasant.

Scott H.

Yelp
Glorio was our server and the food was delicious. We started with the Sindhi Aloo Tikki and the Onion Pakoras. The Lamb Saag for our entree was very good.

Mike S.

Yelp
Excellent Indian restaurant. Huge dinner menu, great food, great value, very good ambiance, great service. Drove 40 miles to meet family for a meal here. Will be doing it again soon!

Galen D.

Yelp
Delicious Indian food! Samosa's, Chicken wings, shrimp coconut curry dishes, mushroom masala, chili chicken were all amazing. The assorted bread basket is a must to soak up all the delicious sauces. Glorio was a great server.

George G.

Yelp
Spent $90 for take out for two people. It was cold and mediocre. I love Indian food so my standards are high but all three dishes lacked flavor and weren't even remotely spicy. I get inflation is an issue and prices are going up everywhere but this place is not worth it.

Jena M.

Yelp
We love Taj Mahal. It is one of our rotational favorites for delicious food every time and exceptional service. Antonio is honest about recommendations and never steers us wrong!

Paige S.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding! Highly recommend the assorted bread basket. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Great service as well. Antonio and the entire team were very attentive and helpful!

Bella M.

Yelp
Amazing! We never really hear anything about this place, but we decided to try it, and it did not disappoint!! The staff was so nice and helpful. Antonio helped us pick a few dishes to try, and they were great. We got samosas, chicken tikka masala, lamb sukha, and tandoori platter! They even brought us gulab jamun for dessert! We will definitely be going back!!

P F.

Yelp
The food was so yummy! The service was great too. Unfortunately I had an allergic reaction as I am allergic to cashews. We mentioned the allergy but due to the language barrier, I don't think they understood. It was my mistake, I should have confirmed.

Janet L.

Yelp
Food was great! Service was excellent! My kids had nut allergies and our waiter explained and pointed out which one they should and should not pick. We will be back!

Angela S.

Yelp
Met up with a friend here and had amazing service and food. Everything was so delicious that I forgot to take pictures.

Meredith A.

Yelp
Antonio was great! Food was so delicious! I just asked Antonio to choose our meal for us and he did an amazing job.

Charlie E.

Yelp
Wonderful Wednesday lunch at the Taj Mahal. Chose Wednesday special consisting of several chicken dishes. Everything was scrumptious. Very satisfying lunch. Excellent service extended to us by Glorio. We shall return.

Vijal P.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you pass it, but when you enter the restaurant it's completely different. The customer service is amazing and the food rocks. It is one of the best Indian food I have had it in a while. They did not have the South Indian dishes but that ok, rest of our food was awesome. Definitely recommend it.

Dominique G.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and each time has been an absolute pleasure, the best is eating in because the waitstaff is phenomenal, Antonio was great!

Terry B.

Yelp
The lamb tiki masala is highly recommended. Great food and service from our server Antonio.

marcela h.

Yelp
Great service, amazing food. Super fast and Arun was great at making sure we could handle the spice level and super attentive!

Brooke B.

Yelp
This place is often hit and miss. Sometimes great, sometimes not so great. I've been a customer here for many years. Tonight we ordered several items including Gobi 65, we instead got paneer. On top of that it was completely inedible, drowned in oil. Samosas were too fried, rock hard and cold. The bread was stale and tough. Additional items included the veggie patties which were also over fried and hard. Called to ask for a refund. They suggested next time they double check the order. No thank you.

Regina C.

Yelp
It had been a long time since I visited Taj Mahal, and I am very happy I returned. I have been reminded of why I thought of it as my favorite Indian restaurant in the GNO area. The food was delicious and the service was great. I was there on a Sunday and ordered the daily special, the non-vegetarian thali (or thaly?). The chicken wings were quite spicy and made a nice appetizer. The chicken tikka masala was perfect, as were the saag and dal. I had never had the desert before, but I tried it and found I do not care for it. But I do not go to Indian restaurants for the deserts anyway. I had iced tea, which was good and strong. Antonio and his crew took very good care of me. They answered my questions and provided recommendations. I will retun. The music and brightly colored furniture made the meal even more enjoyable. This is still a very secial place.

Adam K.

Yelp
BEST INDIAN FOOD IN NEW ORLEANS! The service - impeccable, the food - incredible; this restaurant is 5/5. Antonio, our server, was absolutely delightful. Can't wait to be back!

Tico B.

Yelp
Taj didn't disappoint. Better than last visit - May have new person in Kitchen. All courses were good - samosa could have been hotter. Lamb bhundi and veg bryanni with Golbi Nann. Service was prompt and attentive. Antonio was server and did excellent work. Will be back for sure.

Tom C.

Yelp
This is a very nice place that has maintained consistent high quality of the many year I've been going. Over 20 years!
