The 18 Best Restaurants in Louisville, Kentucky | Eater

"Tucked away in a nondescript spot on Goose Creek Road, there sits a classic Indian restaurant that offers biryani, tandoori specials, a variety of naan, and more. Owner Balwinder Singh has been serving North Indian cuisine since 1996, and Taj Palace offers a menu that boasts dozens of halal options. Singh suggests guests start with tikka masala, with chicken, fish, lamb, shrimp, or goat. Must-try dish: Singh recently introduced Indian-style chicken nuggets, marinated in a blend of cumin, coriander, and turmeric." - Lennie Omalza

I visited Taj Palace and in Buffett the tandoori chicken. Unfortunately, it had a strong unpleasant smell, as if it was not fresh and possibly prepared 2–3 days earlier. This was very disappointing and raised concerns about food quality and hygiene. I hope the management takes this seriously and improves freshness and standards.

We had a family meal on February 14th, 2025. Service is fast, and food is fresh and plenty. It is a new ownership. Garlic Nan is very tasty. I love their Gobi Manchurian. It is the star for this day meal. Their chicken pakora tasted different from the previous visit. Their goat and meat dishes also tasted different. I preferred the previous owner meat dishes. It is still delicious but different. Their salad is very good ! I feel like the cook is good at vegetarian meals. Overall, it is still a good meal for us!

Google
Ordered chicken Tikka masal with mild spice, got no spice so it was bland as you expect, will have to ask if they do spice on a 1 to 5 1 meaning no spice, if so will order a spice level of 2 or 3 for some flavor, will update once I've actually got to try it properly, Naan bread was absolutely delicious, loved the complimentary Indian dish was nice, very clean atmosphere, great service.

Google
Got there 20 minutes after they opened. Place began to fill up fast for a Thursday night. Very attentive staff. Much different than other restaurants as the servers and other staff took care of all tables. No territorial server problems here. Straight forward Indian menu. Food was outstanding and heat level was right where we asked for in our separate dishes. More than large enough portions. Rice was cooked to perfection, fluffy and flavorful. Only complaint was a lack of cashews in the sauce. One in one dish and 2 in the other, but it did not ruin the sauce. Definitely will be going back. $38.00 for two entrees, naan bread and a soda.

Google
It was our first time to eat at Taj Palace. It was delicious. We all got different entrees and were very pleased with flavor, presentation and staff. We will be back. The bread basket had lots of hot bread with 3 different flavors.

Google
The BEST restaurant in Louisville! Have been coming here since 2019. Quick and friendly service, casual during lunch and upscale during dinner. They recently reopened their lunch buffet and it’s amazing! If you don’t know what you like, the variety on the buffet will give you a new favorite. There’s even dessert!

Ritu Rathee

Google
I honestly don’t understand how this restaurant is rated so highly (4.4 stars). I went for lunch recently and my experience was very disappointing. Vegetable Samosa: Completely bland, lacking any spices or flavor, and dripping with oil. Veg Biryani: Not terrible, but definitely nothing special. Dal Makhani : This was the most disappointing. What they served was not dal makhani at all — it tasted like plain dal with just a bit of tempering. Absolutely not the rich, creamy, slow-cooked dish that dal makhani is supposed to be. Overall, the food did not justify the hype or the rating. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic, flavorful food

Google
ALWAYS very delicious and wonderful customer service!!! I come here all the time and the food, the servers, and the atmosphere is always wonderful. I should also mention that their to-go service is very good and they give you SO MUCH food.

Yelp
Ordered carry out at the restaurant. Service was great, fast and the food was the best I have had in Louisville. Chana Masala, garlic naan, veg pokura, and veg samosas. All excellent!

Yelp
We had a wonderful dining experience at Taj Palace in Kentucky. We ordered a couple of naans along with Paneer masala and korma. Everything was fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented. Our server was attentive and served everything with a smile adding to the overall experience. We enjoyed so much that we finished everything and there were no left overs. Highly recommend Taj Palace for delicious Indian food and excellent service.

Bob H.

Yelp
We did take out. The food was delicious; and ready for pick up at the appointed time. They give an abundance of rice. Flavors were good, and the heat was a bit spicy. However, we will definitely return.

Yelp
Had a solid meal at Taj Palace. Had been craving a good Indian meal for a while and was willing to go a bit far given. Informal setting, which means it's good for family and kids. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. Food was good, and we sampled a variety of Saag, Korma, and Tandoori dishes. The spice level and flavors were a bit more muted than I was expecting and used to. Tandoori chicken was also a bit dry. I really liked the Chicken korma and garlic Naan, which was superior. Generally, we left satisfied with the overall meal and atmosphere

Yelp
Stellar Indian food! Everything is delicious. Some favs--garlic naan, vegetable samosa, gobi Manchurian, butter chicken, and chicken tikka kabobs. Comfy seating, booths or tables. Perfect for date night or family dinner. The staff are all amazing and so kind. One of our fav places

Yelp
What a splendid dinner! Started with a double Willet. Priced reasonably and served with a giant ice cube in a substantial glass. Good pour! Next up was the Special Pappadi Chaat. Think Indian nachos. Big pile of beautifully diced fresh vegetables, a couple of different sauces and a cilantro preparation we need to learn to make at home. Perfect first bites confirmed we were going to have a great meal. Wife picked the Malai Kofta and I snagged a couple of bites. Big, complex sauce over the stuffed things. Really, really tasty! I chose the 1/2 Tandoori Chicken for my entree. Loved the bird's flavor but (like most Tandoori chicken I've been served) was a bit dry. Fortunately, they included a sauce chaser with the meal. The Kingfisher I had with the entree arrived with a big, heavy, frozen mug. Love it! There was a wonderful garlic naan and some Gulab for dessert. All in all, a fantastic meal!

Yelp
I went for the lunch buffet at Taj Palace with a friend, first time there. I hate to have to say it, but it was only mediocre. The food wasn't spicy enough, and some of it was positively bland. Lots of chicken and runny sauces, everything kinda ran together on the tongue. I also have to mention - the place isn't altogether clean. There's an unused steam table near the front door, and it looked like somebody cleaned it with ice cream. The carpet needed vacuuming in spots, and the men's room was in sore need of cleaning. There were cobwebs on the walls! I won't be going back.

Yelp
Pani Puri Indian small bubbles It often appears in movies. The juice is very special. After pouring the small bubbles, it is eaten together, which has a layered texture. Three classic curries Butter Chicken curry, Beef Masala beef masala, Lamb Palak spinach lamb curry, three curries, not good looking, but the taste is top-notch.

Yelp
Good food, amazing service! It's always an amazing testament to service when your water glass never hits the bottom. My husband and I are biiig water fans, and they never let us go thirsty! Not only that but they were prompt with letting us order and getting the bill. We didn't feel rushed at all, but also glad we didn't have to twiddle our thumbs and wait for the check! I really enjoyed their garlic naan, it was nice and crispy with a plethora of seasoning. I also enjoyed the potato app, I don't like chick peas however I ate the majority of them! Would def get takeout from here and use their discounts.

Yelp
Taj is the the best Indian restaurant in Louisville. You can never go wrong whether you're dining in or getting it to go.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Taj Palace, imo, has the best saag paneer in Louisville, and I learned with this order that their carryout has very generous portions. I wish I liked their chicken curry as much as the saag paneer, but I found it disappointing. In a previous visit I tried the tikka masala chicken and it is as good as the saag paneer so I believe the chicken curry is an outlier dish. Their garlic naan is also good, but it's fairly standard. They were very kind when I picked up the order, and I appreciated how well balanced the carryout bag was as well. It's the little things sometimes!

Petronia B.

Yelp
Scrumptious!!! Portion size, taste/seasoning/spice all perfect. Service and attention was also wonderful. Loved that the plates and utensils were fine dining. Definitely will return.

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Fantastic Indian food. The portions are quite large, you could almost share with another person.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Their chicken tikka masala is absolutely incredible--perfectly spiced, rich, and creamy, with the ideal balance of flavor. We always pair it with their fresh, fluffy naan, which is just as amazing. Whether dipping the naan into the sauce or enjoying it on its own, every bite is a delight. My whole family loves this spot, and we keep coming back for more. I highly recommend Taj Palace if you're craving authentic, delicious Indian cuisine!

Yelp
Great food, very clean! Very friendly service. Went in around lunchtime only been once would still recommend.

Yelp
I like the buffet lunch! The foods were tasty with a good selection of different dishes. The price was reasonable and a nice service! Will definitely come back!

Yelp
Best Indian food in Louisville. It reminds me of the Indian takeaways I would get when I studied abroad in the UK (they're amazing there and you aren't enjoying the UK right if you don't get curry or paneer while in London). Anyway, they have tons of different types of curries from different parts of the Indian subcontinent. The food is very high quality and so flavorful. Definitely get the Naan, Vindaloo, Spinach paneer, and Punjabi Aloo. The Punjabi dishes are pretty authentic and reminded me of my friend's Punjabi relatives' homemade dishes. This place definitely satisfies.

Yelp
The food is consistently delicious, and the staff attentive. We love Taj Palace and are longtime patrons. We've used them for special family occasions and receptions as well, and never been disappointed. Tip: if you love it really spicy, you'll need to let them know. Mild is very much so (almost no heat). But all the food has wonderful flavor, no matter the spice level.

Yelp
Order here for the first time on Thanksgiving night with a coupon for 25% off. We ordered vegetable pakoras, shrimp vindaloo Indian hot, bhindi bhagram (okra), galub Jamin, rice pudding. The pakoras were satisfactory, and the galub Jamin. The rice pudding was bland. But most importantly, the two entrees were bad enough that I will not return. The okra was so old and dry, almost every piece was inedible, pulling wooden veins unable to be chewed out of my mouth with every bite. I tried to sort through and salvage ANY of it, but the entire dish consisting completely of okra was totally inedible. And the shrimp vindaloo was about as hot as the okra dish even though we asked for extremely spicy Indian hot. There was no depth to it, it didn't taste like vindaloo, and it was like someone opened a can of pureed tomatoes and dumped in a little of some chili powder and then some shrimp and potatoes. There's no onion base or mustard oil base. It was essentially flavorless and like Chef Boyardee quality. Considering that this order was $60, this was not worth not going back for a second attempt

Yelp
I'm visiting from the West Coast. I love Indian food. I found this family restaurant on Yelp. Food is delicious! I ordered to go and had my hot food in less than 15 minutes. The portions are great...I couldn't finish it all...will definitely be eating leftovers tomorrow!
google avatar

Joel P.

Yelp
We enjoyed it. The flavor bursted for minutes in our mouths. Chicken tikka masala, vegetable biryani, vegetable semosa plus a bit more. Our table became packed with foods (and a bottle of wine) within the first 15 minutes we sat down. I'd go again for sure. We do love trying new Indian restaurants so not sure if we'll go back next Indian food craving or within the next three or four. But we'll be back.

Krishna M.

Yelp
We got delivery from taj palace through doordash last night. The food came to our door in less than ten minutes. We ordered Daal Makhni mild Malai Kofta mild and Chicken Makhani mild. They gave us a large portion of rice 2 containers of it with garlic naan. All the food had good flavor. We will definetly be back.

Yelp
Uh oh. I really wanted to like this place, consistency is a problem and with every restaurant, if you're not consistent, well.... this is what happens. Chicken Rogan Josh - Good Paneer Tikka Masala - Good Sauce is good, but thin and was separating. Lamb Vindaloo - yikes. Bland, thin sauce, lacking depth and made worse by about 3.5 ounces of lamb in a $16 takeout pint. What the fuck. This is made worse by the fact that it was poorly cooked, not slowly to the point of falling apart, but more like a chopped pork loin, tough and chewy. Lamb vindaloo should be ping-pong ball sized chunks that are falling apart. Indian food is about bold flavor. Let's see some more of that. And you'd better get back on point with your value. I get bigger and better cooked meat at Wendy's for a better price. Sorry I'm tough, but otherwise we would live in a sea of mediocrity. Overall, lots of potential, the rogan josh and tikka weren't bad, just needs bigger cuts of meat. ( Not necessarily more actual meat, but don't cut it into dog snack size bites.) Give this place a try, I've had pretty good here in previous experiences, but the final critique must include all visits, it wouldn't be fair to review otherwise. Good eating.

Yelp
As you pull up you see that the outside of the building is dated but don't let that deter you. The #1 best thing here is that they have A LOT of vegetarian dishes AND they are all GLUTEN FREE! Win! (They do have Naan for those gluten bread lucky souls that can handle it with no stomach discomfort lol!) They also have meat dishes but imball about the veg ones so that was my focus. Went with my girlfriends and we each got a different dish. They also bring out the thin lentil based crackers at the beginningnwith a few chutneys but that was nothing to write home about and no yogurt based ones to help cool the spicy ones. So that's an area for improvement. Their dishes were all tasty. I ordered mine with Medium (#2) spice bit it came out spice-less. No heat at all, so I recommend a level #3 or up if you want spice. Service was pretty normal and they kept our water glasses full so yay for that! I'm going to hit a different Indian restaurant with my girlie next month.
google avatar

Colton W.

Yelp
Very nice upscale leaning atmosphere. Wonderful food! Flavors were incredible, although I'm sad I only ordered a 2 out of 5 on the spicy scale. Our server was awesome and helped us pick great dishes. All in all, a great experience and we will definitely be back! Although it did remind me of Coldplay.... Because it was all yellow.

Yelp
Yum yum! Based on the recommended specialty of the business I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with Basmati rice and Garlic Naan for dinner last night for a back porch dinner. My dinner date had a lamb dish but to be honest I was so focused on my own meal that I didn't pay much attention to his *grin.* Our starter was the Paneer Afgani which was a delicious un-aged non melting cheese and mixed grilled vegetables dish with a savory white sauce and that was so satisfying it could have been a meal all itself (making for plenty of leftovers for lunch today!). With the current stay at home campaign with COVID-19 the staff at Taj Palace was wonderful about being responsive, accurate and kind on the phone taking our order and so quick being ready with our food! All ready to go for curb side pick up although delivery is also available. I have been into Taj palace in the past for dinner both buffet and table dinner and we have had such a pleasant meal with the dining staff, I am looking forward to spending more time in the restaurant with this staff! In the meantime, we will continue to happily support this local neighborhood restaurant from home.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The service was also right on par. You won't be disappointed with this place.

Yelp
had been craving Indian food and our friend lives close to Taj palace. Decided to order online and And do pick up from the restaurant. My order was timely and available right when it stated it would be. It was also so well packaged. When taking Indian food to go, that is so important and appreciated. The paneer dish was very tasty and had a great spice to it. Also got plentiful rice which was very welcome because it went so well with the paneer. The combination of flavors is done really well and Taj Palace is a really great location for Indian food. I'd love to go back, order online and take it to go. However, it's also a great spot to eat in with such a central location and atmosphere. This is very authentic and I'm very thankful that we have such a solid Indian place in town.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Finally made it to Taj after being on my list for a while. I should have waited a lot longer in this case; authentic Indian food it was not and average at best. To take nothing away from the server who was great and helpful, it was the food that did not come through. I ordered the chicken curry, medium spice with garlic naan. What initially looked good was a watery curry with little flavor. The accompanying rice was enough for three people when just one is eating. Lastly on the garlic naan, very bland and went with everything else served at what seems lower quality. Without the pandemic it seems their mainstay is buffet service not made to order. Sadly a poor experience, cannot return here again.
google avatar

Renuka J.

Yelp
We ordered take out from here the other night. We ordered the lamb rogan josh and malai kofta as well as paneer pakora. Quantity of the paneer pakora was really good and the pakoras themselves weren't too bad. The malai kofta was very good but I was hoping for a few more kofta's in the dish for the price of the item. Lamb Rogan josh was tasty but definitely was low on salt. Also, the portion size was good but the quantity of actual lamb in there was absolutely unacceptable. We payed $18 for a tiny portion of lamb. The price was far too high for the quantity of lamb received. Both items came with large quantities of rice. Overall, the food here was ok but honestly, if I'm craving Indian again, I will likely try another restaurant before coming here again

Netra A.

Yelp
We were celebrating a friends birthday and decided Indian cuisine was what we wanted. We made a reservation the week before for 8. We were seated in our own room and place settings were already in place. There is hand sanitizer at the door and all staff were wearing masks. There were a few other diners but they were spaced out in another room. We had lots of different appetizers and my favorite was the garlic nan. I couldn't stop eating it. I got the lamb kebab for my entree and it came out sizzling hot and smelled so good. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks. The service was great and it was good to get out with friends safely.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
The food here is very good. I think it's the best Indian food in the area. I went for a late dinner last night with my sister. The dining room feels very classy, all of the tables pre-set in a lovely and inviting way. We received great service -- 2 servers checking up on us. I always appreciate when a server checks in about how the food tastes. I got a mango lassi, which I love to get to cool the spice, although they put in some ice cubes which kinda watered it down after so long. We both got the chicken tikka masala. It was good. It's not my favorite in town but quite good. The gravy is creamy and tangy. And maybe a little too tangy for my liking? It had a little hint of sweetness/vinegar which I don't completely prefer but it's all a matter of taste. Someone else might like that. I still enjoyed it. Spice level 3 was just the right amount of spice. The garlic naan was freshly baked, you could smell the garlic and herbs and buttery flavor. If you're in the mood for Indian and you're in the area this is a convenient location and is pretty good.
google avatar

Vern C.

Yelp
We love Taj Palace's understated, quite atmosphere and have been there many times. Both carry out and table service are great. Carry out features larger portions than table service. The menu selection is great; we always order vegetarian.

Suzanne L.

Yelp
We ordered Chicken Tiki Masalla! Medium heat , oh yes! Spinach nan, extra onion chutney! Fabulous!

Hannah S.

Yelp
Taj is THE BEST indian restaurant in louisville by far! i've been eating here for years and thought it was about time to leave them a well deserved review. as a vegetarian, my favorite entrees are the malai kofta and channa masala- medium spice level with garlic naan yum! not only is the food out of this world good, their staff is very friendly and professional. if you get the chance, you should definitely try it! plus they are open late until 10pm which is always a plus :)
google avatar

Bren P.

Yelp
Always one of my fav Indian restaurants. I like to dine in, but this last time I ordered take out and the portions are generous! My go to are the chicken korma, butter chicken, and saag paneer.

Runsha N.

Yelp
Had there been more stars, I would have given all of them. They accommodated us after hours and we dint feel unwelcomed for even a min. Super tasty chaat items. Must have. Loved the food and people. Bless you.

Claire M.

Yelp
We had never had indian food before, and the waiters were extremely helpful and kind with their recommendations, and at least 3 different people were checking in on us. we were underdressed because we didn't know what to expect, but even so the waiters treated us like any other guests. The food came out very quickly and was so simple yet flavorful. We had never had anything like this and if we could go back every day we would. Good cost for what you get.

Diane G.

Yelp
The food was good, not spicy enough even though we requested Indian spicy. Ordered chicken vindaloo, palak paneer, and chicken tikka masala. Prices on on the high side, compared with other Indian restaurants in the general area. Service was good, nice restaurant inside, very quiet.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Always been a pleasant experience here. The food is always hot and the portions are always great. The only reason I'm leaving 4 stars, instead of 5, is because level 5 spice is not spicy enough. I like a lot of spice. Still though, if you're looking for plenty of flavor and a mild to medium spiced dish: PLEASE visit here.
google avatar

Cheri S.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service...always a great experience here...if you've never has the buffet I highly recommend... :)
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
Update- Still the best Indian takeout in town. They never disappoint. We've probably had them a little extra during this pandemic but that's because we know it's always going to taste great. The food is always going to be hot and fresh and both my husband and I crave it often. We've definitely tried many things and enjoyed many things but our go to is the chicken tikka masala with medium spice (A really perfect amount but if it weren't for my husband, I'd go spicier). We always share because it's a ton of food. We get an order of garlic naan always, and usually another type of bread. We get all of three of their sauces in which to dip our bread, but it's the cilantro mint chutney that does it for me. A very favorite sauce of mine, I would put it on anything. Don't let the picture fool you, there was a ton of chicken in that sauce. We still have food left over after both of us eating and our daughter eating plenty of the rice. I've reviewed this place before, but I just needed to give it another shout out because it's always so good!
google avatar

Lana C.

Yelp
I had previously given a glowing review for Taj Palace. It was one of my favorite restaurants for years. Within the last year/year and a half it's not been the same. At one point I was told they had a new chef. I don't know if that is accurate, but I do know the flavor/taste of the food has changed. I'm really sad about this because they've always been my go to in Louisville when I crave indian food. * I've given it a half dozen chances hoping to get back what it used to be. My husband shakes his head every time I try again. Let me know if anyone has recommendations in the area.

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Trash. Total garbage. Used to be a great place to grab an Indian Buffet for lunch but no more. The dirty, stinky steam line is still out there but now you are met with a gruff hello, if they speak to you at all, and given their dinner menu, at full price. No longer good. No longer a bargain. No longer my favorite Indian place.
google avatar

Alexa K.

Yelp
Hands down our favorite Indian in Louisville. Their chicken tikka masala is my in town - I tell everyone, "I could literally drink the sauce." Affordable, delicious and timely - we usually get carry out.
google avatar

Eboniece B.

Yelp
Had a great experience there. Went twice once to order off the menu and again to experience the buffet. Customer service was excellent, server never allowed my drink to go less than half full, which is appreciated. When ordering off the menu the food was fresh and delicious the cost was $22, ($3.00 Chia Tea, $4.00 Garlicky Naan Bread, and the dish with Shrimp was $15) Buffet the food was good as well, but the food selection was limited compared to other Indian buffets. The buffet cost was $11.99. If you have been to a Indian restaurant and know what you like I would recommend this place. However, if you don't know what to order I wouldn't recommend their buffet for a first time experience.

Yelp
My first experience tasting Indian cuisine. A friend recommended so we found our way to try all while talking of trying. In the car we go. I must say I was a bit apprehensive but game to try. As we interned the Taj we were immediately welcomed and seated at our choice. Now I wasn't expecting table clothing stem ware or the service. I wasn't sure of what to order so my friend took the honor to choose several items to share. Oh my each and everyone was delicious. With our choices of heat because I'm not one to breathe fire so mild is me. Our service was great! Our glasses always full. Large choices of wine, bourbon (my fav) along with many other spirits. I've found a new love of cuisine. Now I can't wait to return very soon. Highly recommend Shrimp Vinaloo, Aloo Gondi, Teshmi chicken and Shrimp Tikki Masala. Don't forget the softest herbed garlic dipping breads.

Mia K.

Yelp
I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I have NEVER had a bad experience with Taj. When we eat in the restaurant, the service is always great. The restaurant is always clean and welcoming. All the servers are attentive, nice, and always answers any questions we have about the menu. The chicken Tikka Masala and Naan are to die for, I can't say enough about it. I'll wait until 5 pm just to get Taj instead of ordering from another Indian restaurant. The portions of food are enough to fill you up or even take home for later, prices are fair for the amount you get. If I could eat Tikka Masala and Naan from here everyday, I would 100%!

Yelp
Really great restaurant! The food is spectacular and I can't wait to get some more! I ate the food so fast I forgot to take a picture.
