Tak Kee

"It started out as a street-side hawker stall in the 1990s and still retains the casual, vibrant vibe. The second-generation hands-on owner shops for groceries every day and sometimes helps the experienced chefs with kitchen chores. Pork tripe and peppercorn soup is a culinary highlight, using peppers from Malaysia and Indonesia. Regulars also come for its spiced marinated goose liver, crispy chitterlings stuffed with glutinous rice and oyster omelette." - Michelin Inspector

Behind The Bib: Tak Kee in Hong Kong

"Going from strength to strength after three decades in Kennedy Town, this traditional Teochew stalwart packs out weeknights and now wears a Bib Gourmand for great food at reasonable prices. Daa laang–style specialties—chilled fish, chilled crab, stewed goose, and deep-fried Osbeck’s grenadier anchovy—are all about exceptional ingredients: seafood is sourced daily, and even the red bigeye is handpicked for flat-tailed females with smoother flesh. Everyday Teochew cooking is the sweet spot, with a standout whitebait fish fritter that’s dry and egg-fragrant, made by par-boiling two- to three-inch whitebait, drawing off excess moisture, then pan-frying with egg. The kitchen also blends traditions, from a boiled (not double-boiled) pig stomach and white pepper soup—balanced by a mix of frozen and fresh stomach and finished with salted mustard greens for a just-right pepper note—to baked flathead mullet in plum sauce tweaked with Thai cues: herbs stuffed inside, sauce poured on, then wrapped in foil and baked for a more intense yet recognizably Teochew flavor. To drink, Hong Kong-style 7-Up with preserved lemon is a signature; the house lemons are sold in cans because customers take them home. Beyond the food, a thoughtful, modern touch shows in the computerised order system and a day-off policy introduced by Lai, while long-tenured staff (many here 10–20 years) and company trips keep the human warmth that anchors its success; Wong shops the markets each morning, keeps adapting old recipes, and says the Bib brings pressure to do even better." - Michelin Guide Digital-Hong Kong Macau

Tak Kee: The Teochew Spirit

"Opened for thirty years, the Kennedy Town eatery is going from strength to strength. Adding to the great food and reasonable price, its inclusion in the list of Bib Gourmand selection in the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2018 makes the joint all the more popular." - Michelin Guide Digital-Hong Kong Macau

Was here for dinner on a weeknight. Quite packed during dinner time. Made reservation in advance and pre order some dishes in advance. Food quality is good but can be pricey depending on order of food.

Recently dined at this restaurant offering local Chiu Chou food and had a memorable experience. The marinated duck and sausage were perfectly seasoned and incredibly flavorful. The crispy oster cake was a delightful treat. Don't miss the unique "fried noodle by two sides" dish - you won't believe it's noodles! The staff was friendly, the price is reasonable too.

Food looks great but it is mediocre-tasting food for a Michelin-awarded restaurant. Nothing too fancy. The most upsetting thing was the dishonesty and lack of transparency. They ended up charging us for a bunch of things we thought were free because we were not told otherwise. We were charged for the appetizers. They also charged us $60 HKD for the tasteless tea. On top of that, the service fee was 10% of our total bill while in most cases for restaurants that are not high class, they don't charge you tips or service fees. Had they told us they would charge us for these things, my rating might be higher. Instead they dishonestly snuck hidden fees in our bill. We will not be coming back again.

This place has authentic Chiu Chow cuisine. We had the deep fried oysters, oyster and meat congee, fish over daikon, deep fried fish cakes, marinated roasted goose and their special almond beef lung fish soup. As a Michelin recommended I expected but overall decent! Service was a typical and was busy when we were there but still had available tables.

This place does exactly two things right: braised goose and chilled crab. That’s it. Anyone reviewing the stir-fried veggies or whatever is basically the culinary equivalent of ordering an omelet at a steakhouse—then acting surprised when it disappoints. Yes, I know it says it's a chiu chou restaurant, but you should realize it's a goose restaurant first and foremost. The braised goose? Absolute masterclass. Every cut is tender and juicy, even the breast meat (which usually suffers). The goose webs soak up that soy marinade like they were born for it, and the liver walks the fine line—firm enough to hold its shape, but melts on the tongue. Don’t skip those parts; they’re the best bites. Yes, it’s pricey. But restaurant prices have been rising across the board in Hong Kong these days. And for what you’re getting, it’s a fair deal.

Altogether 8 persons. Ordered 8 dishes and a pot of oyster porridge. Portion is big and food tastes okay. However, seating is very packed and no distancing between tables at all. Staff is also very stingy on chili oil. No initiatives to provide Chiu chow chili oil in a Chiu chow restaurant. When we asked for chili oil, staff gave us one small fish if it for 8 persons. Quite ridiculous. Limited meal time for 90 minutes and always coming for reminding.

Yelp
This is a well known restaurant for the locals, they specializes in Chiu Chow cuisine. Being in the Province of Canton, Chiu Chow has its very unique language and culture, this of course includes the food culture! Leaning heavy on fresh seafood, local seasonal ingredients, and no nonsense way of cooking, it is one of the most popular cuisine in Southern China after Cantonese Cooking. One of our family friend has brought us to this restaurant many times, and it never fails to provide top notch flavours and varieties! Special Highlighted dishes: Marinated Goose Meat and all other trimmings; the spirit of this dish is the Marinating Sauce that all the meats are slow cooked in, some stores will boast that their Sauce has been with them for generations, it is highly prized and only the Master Chef can touch the Stock Pot that this precious sauce is kept! Pork Tripe with White Peppercorn and Preserved Mustard Green Soup; long name but it is one of the most famous Chiu Chow style soup that everyone loves, Tak Kee did a very good job here with their version and I almost have to order it every single time! There are just too many dishes that they do really well, the fact that they are always busy makes everything so much fresher! Come at around 5:30 or 5:45 and you will for sure get a table and also avoid the crowd that starts to rush in at around 6:30 or 7:00!! Tip: come hungry, as there will be too many things you will want to try!

Yelp
So I am writing this Yelp review not about going inside the Tak Kee Chiu Chow Restaurant and having a meal, but rather I am writing this review about the "Ah Por Put Chai Gou" that Tak Kee Chiu Chow has given space to to sell her traditional Chinese puddings out front. As recently written in HK Magazine.... "Known lovingly by the residents of Western as "Ah por put chai gou" - "old granny's bowl pudding" - this cheerful old lady has been selling traditional Chinese puddings on the streets of Sai Wan for decades. After she was charged by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the owner of Tak Kee Chiu Chow Restaurant has given her a space in front of this restaurant to continue the business." It was on this snip-it, my husband and I jumped on the ding ding and headed down to 3 Belcher's Street in Kennedy Town. There is also a HKU subway stop directly across the street and I think it is exit C2... a lot of underground walking. First, let me say kuddos to the owner of Tak Kee Chiu Chow for letting this old lady sell her desserts. She is not harming anyone. Also, although we did not eat at Tak Kee Chiu Chow restaurant and we were on a dessert hunt, the restaurant was packed. Because the owner was nice to the old dessert lady, we will follow that good karma and absolutely go back. So the "old granny" was selling three things (all $5HKD a piece). One put chai gou was white with red beans (we think was made with white sugar, my least favorite), one put chai gou that was brown with red beans (we think was made with brown sugar, I liked a lot!) and one black sesame sticky rice patty (this was awesome!). The sticky rice patty was really delicious, perfectly sweet and had great flavor. All of these items were sold to us on a stick and out of a plastic bag. So definitely go get yourself some street side desserts from this super sweet old granny and consider having dinner inside Tak Kee Chiu Chow as well.

Yelp
came here right before they closed for lunch so I have to order quickly. very big menu so it's hard to decide what I want. tried the salty lemon soda drink-it's unique. crispy chiu chow noodle cake is very interesting. you have to eat it dipping into sugar. try a few more other dishes but don't remember the name. will have to come back again to try more dishes.
