14 Top NYC Restaurants That Feel Like Japan | Eater NY

"In Japanese, “yaki” means grill, while “niku” means meat. Takashi is a 34-seat yakiniku restaurant dressed in wood, with rustic tables outfitted with individual grills that replicate the heat emitted by a charcoal flame. Just like at a Korean barbecue restaurant, diners order off the menu, and raw proteins land tableside, for a cook-your-own meal. While there’s an assortment of cooked appetizers, the focus is on carefully sourced premium beef (including wagyu) from sustainable farms in upstate New York and Japan. There’s both wagyu from Miyazaki, plus an American take on the buttery beef, alongside more adventurous cuts like tongue, stomach, and intestines. Takashi debuted in 2010 from the late chef Takashi Inoue and quickly become a New York fixture for its excellent beef and spartan Japanese look." - Kat Odell

13 Excellent Steak Tartares in NYC | Eater NY

"Grilled meats and offal cuts are basically a requisite when ordering at this West Village spot focused on yakiniku, a tabletop Japanese grilling style. But be sure to check out the wide range of raw meat dishes on the menu, too. The chunky yooke is a particular standout of thin-sliced chuck eye crowned with a quail egg and served atop a shiso leaf. An ideal meal here ends with the vanilla soft serve." - Alexandra Ilyashov

Absolutely fantastic sushi! The fish was incredibly fresh, and every roll was beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor. The menu had a great variety, from traditional nigiri to creative specialty rolls. The ambiance was clean, modern, and welcoming, perfect for a date night or casual dinner. You can tell the chefs take real pride in their work. I’ll definitely be coming back soon. One of the best sushi spots I’ve been to in a long time!

Kathy English

Google
Had the Rainbow 🌈 roll and spicy California Roll. Did take out. This has been the FRESHEST sushi I have ever had in my life. The wasabi paste cleared my sinuses (good thing) and I actually feel energized after eating. I will definitely be back.

Emily Lindsey

Google
Hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had!! I only eat vegetarian sushi so my opinion probably doesn’t matter as much LOL, but this place actually had really yummy veggie (and fruit!) options. The sweet potato roll with chipotle sauce was my favorite. The perfect blend of sweet, savory, and smoky!! The atmosphere was lovely, like a small cafe. It was cool to watch them preparing the meals. My partner got some sashimi and was really impressed with that and his roll! I also got a mango roll and that was SO delicious!! Very unique ingredients, and I THINK they even serve real wasabi!! It was so fragrant and delicious. 100% recommend if you like sushi!

Google
They made a custom roll for me and it was delicious! Tuna, Mango & Jalapeño. = Yum! I would definitely go again. Great prices, delicious food and wonderful service.

Google
Must try!!! The best sushi place in town. The staff were friendly. The food was so good.

Google
I've been wanting to try this place for years, seeing as how the reviews are always positive. I finally was able to see if the reviews were truly deserved. Yes. Yes they are. The 3 stars for atmosphere is strictly due to the tiny dining area, which has a concrete floor and no dividers between tables. This makes it very difficult to have a quiet conversation. Everything was exceptionally clean, including the building exterior. The service was top notch and friendly. The prices were very reasonable given the quality and taste of our order. Despite the items being made fresh on a very busy Friday evening, we waited no more than 10 - 15 minutes for our order. The main star of the show is the food, and it easily took center stage. It was intensely wonderful, and so few things can do that in the first bite. If you have high expectations and have trouble finding good sushi, Takashi is the answer to your wishes.

Google
This is definitely the best sushi I've ever had! I'm not a huge sushi fan, but Takashi makes it taste so good! I ordered the volcano rol, and it's very good. The staff are so nice! I highly recommend stopping here for your sushi fix!

Google
Easiest 5 Star to give this A+ Sushi restaurant. The quality of the fish 🐟 😋 👌 is top-notch. Very kind owners and staff. I try to stop on whenever I'm the area, even if it's just for a "snack," 😉.

Yelp
Easily the best sushi in Central PA! Great quality/value, and BYOB is a nice bonus if you want to bring your own wine, sake, etc. On this visit, we started with the edamame, shrimp tempura, and the Ocean Platter which has a nice variety of sashimi/nigiri and half of their house special Camp Hill roll. Then, we enjoyed 4 different rolls and the fried banana with honey for dessert.
google avatar

Yelp
We found Takashi while in the Camp Hill area and we're so glad we stopped! We dined at lunch, feasting on vegetable spring rolls, a California roll, a gator roll, and vegetable teriyaki with white rice. Our server was prompt and attentive and the meal was fresh and delicious. Takashi The Art of Sushi is worth a visit!

Yelp
My friend and I ate here right before they closed. This place can be considered to be a hole in the wall their food was fresh. Every bite of fish was cold. I wanted to eat every single one we had on the boat but the rice about of the nigiris are too much. Service was amazing here as well. We were greater with a smile and the energy if the server was amazing.

Yelp
Great service and excellent sushi you could really taste the freshness and flavor! This place is a hidden gem!

Yelp
I've had a lot of sushi across the U.S. and around the world, and this was truly some of the best we've ever had. You can bring your own wine or favorite drink and enjoy an incredible sushi dinner. The roll sizes were HUGE, and honestly, everything we tried was amazing. Hands down the best sushi spot in the Harrisburg area!
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
Great service! Amazing sushi. They cater to both types of customers, ones that want more American-fusion and traditional style as well. The fun rolls with lots of flavor is great for anyone! Their sashimi/sushi al le carte was definitely perfectly cut and the rice was portioned to the traditional style! They even had very fresh uni and O'toro which is hard to get in middle PA. Definitely a hidden gem worth coming back to. It is a bring your own bottle of wine place so plan accordingly and you can pair your favorite rolls with your favorite wine. They have a bar seating and tables with a cozy modern/traditional twist with modern seating arrangement.

Yelp
Never once in my life would I except the middle of Pa to have bomb sushi. This was proven wrong on Christmas Eve when we went to Takashi We had a party of about 20. The spot is small so we took up half the restaurant but the staff were awesome. Everyone's drinks were filled so fast, kept checking in to make sure everything was good and super helpful. Two of us ordered shrimp fried rice but were given chicken and they brought us an extra plate of shrimp fried rice and didn't charge us. I will say, that fried rice was BOMB and massive. Also, I'm happy they messed up that order because the shrimp in the fried rice was rubber The sushi itself was a good size roll, fairly priced and awesome. I got the Camp Hill Roll and Flamingo Roll. Any of the rolls that have the chili plum sauce is an automatic get tbh. I cannot imagine you'll find a better sushi spot in Hershey/Harrisburg/Gettysburg/Lancaster/York I'm giving it a 4 because of the surprise given the location Sadly I didn't take any pictures

Yelp
Super clean. Tasty foods. Friendly peeps. In an out of the way place. But quality. Everyone enjoyed.

Yelp
The most beautiful presentation and freshest sushi I've had. It's become my go to spot now. The service is always on point. Salad with ginger dressing is the starting point, sashimi sampler then rainbow roll. Today they had special salmon belly prepared with roe, fresh wasabi greens and toasted slightly. It melted in my mouth. Chef's kiss...

Yelp
THIS PLACE! I've been looking for a good, I mean better than just okay, Sushi restaurant. I need to look no further. I have found it. And while it's not close to my house, I will HAPPILY drive 45 minutes one way to get this over and over. I have sushi all around this country. This place is a 10! Thank you for being delicious, fresh, clean and available! We are in love with y'all!

Yelp
I was a fan. I still like a few rolls a lot. The Panko Crusted Roll is awesome. The Camp Hill Roll was not good. Ratio of rice in roll to content was 2/3 rice. Sauce was boring. The gyoza are good. And we have had some good experiences. Well, this last one was not. We were told 45 minutes. Well, that turned into an hour and a half. And for an hour of it, I was sitting there, unsure of its status, and trying to check in and not make anyone mad. They just kept saying it wasn't done. Nobody updated me. Nobody apologized. And there were a few around me in the same boat. One woman said,"I've went up three times and don't understand where my food is?" At first, the restaurant was busy. But that died off fast. Even if that caused an issue, the customer service aspect was terrible. It was all a guess and hope that somehow it would appear. Next time, I'll go back to Sapporo.

Yelp
The sushi rolls are so delicious!!! The gator roll is my favorite! It's the best sushi place on the West Shore!

Yelp
I really enjoyed this sushi! I am a big sushi fan so I have tried a lot of different restaurants and this one was pretty yummy. I got the Takashi roll and it was a great combination of sweet and spicy with delicious cream cheese too. I also tried the dragon roll which was super delicious, I think that was my favorite roll today. The seaweed salad was also good. My friend got California rolls and crab Rangoon and also said they were really good. I ordered delivery so I am not sure how their atmosphere or service are but I would definitely come back here based on the food!!

Yelp
What a beautiful place! Being from New York, I am incredibly used to having sushi every day as there is a sushi spot on each and every corner. I have been longing to find a good sushi place in the area, and I am so happy that I stumbled upon Takashi. I felt at home. The service is amazing. The owner is always incredibly kind as is the staff. Everyone works together there which I love seeing. It also adds to the service! The sushi is so good! My husband and I have made this our go to spot. I like to eat alllll types of sushi so it's such a relief to see so many options! The restaurant is also BYOB so if you do fancy something to drink while you're having sushi, I would make sure to bring something along as they do not service alcohol. If you like all of the fancy flavors, like I do, I recommend their Ikura sushi! It is amazing. The little salty eggs are filled with so much flavor. Their poke bowls are fantastic as well!! Whether you are new to the area, visiting, or looking for a nice local sushi spot, I definitely recommend!!!

Yelp
Takashi is one of my favorite places to go... SO GOOD!!! Sushi is my favorite food, but this sushi is better than any other sushi! (: :) The service is also AMAZING and so great there! The setting is a small, cozy room with pretty wallpaper and a kid-friendly sushi bar at the front. I think Takashi should expand their business, that would be amazing!

Peggy S.

Yelp
The sushi here is amazing! So fresh, absolutely delicious! It's a a staple in our house. My son who lives in the Boston area always requests Takashi when he is home because it's so much better than what they are able to get up there! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Okay, I gave this place more chances, and safe to say, this is probably one of my favorite sushi spots in camp hill. We came here to celebrate with friends and it was great. They were able to accommodate a 7 person table including two wild kids. We got a boat, and I have to say it was good for the price, but I wish they offered a larger boat. We ordered a bunch of other rolls as well, so it worked out. Our friends were not too familiar with all of the sashimi, so it was great to let them try everything they had on the boat. I recommend almost every roll except for the pink lady roll- that one... idk, it didn't work for my palate but it did look very pretty. My kiddo loves salmon sashimi, so she had two portions of that (4 cuts in total), and she enjoyed her roe and edamame. We ordered a bunch of rolls and they were very good. I will be back again soon! (Sorry, we were so hungry that we dived into the boat before I could take a picture... next time! But I did manage to take two pics of some of the rolls we ordered ).
google avatar

Yelp
I had the Fresh Crab Avocado Roll & Mango Shrimp Roll. Both tasted fresh & delicious. Nice serving sizes on both rolls! I ordered ahead and my food was ready quickly! Friendly staff and cute decor inside the restaurant too! I will definitely visit again.
google avatar

Amber F.

Yelp
This is a very small restaurant, but don't let that fool you from what's inside. My husband and I stopped in for lunch on a Friday and it was not busy at all, we sat right away and were waited on within minutes. We got 4 sushi rolls, seafood spring rolls, and the Takashi salad. Everything was delicious. The rolls were not like anything we have had in the central PA area. SO GOOD! They are a little pricey, but normally good sushi is. It's that old saying "ya get what ya pay for". We will most definitely be returning. PS they also do take out orders
google avatar

Corey K.

Yelp
Fresh fish, great service. BYOB. Food served on time with friendly service. Oh and REAL wasabi!!

Sarah A.

Yelp
I keep coming back here! The food is amazing, the service is quick and friendly! Would recommend a reservation as it fills up quickly! The Takashi roll and a cup of green tea is my favorite. The best sushi in the area!

Ellis S.

Yelp
would give an 100/10 if I could. Food was so good I almost hugged the whole staff. Service was amazing and the food was somehow even better. Looks unassuming from the outside but the inside is really nice. Restaurant was a little cold but the food makes up for it.

Katie H.

Yelp
Visiting from San Francisco, Takashi serves delicious fish at a great value! Welcoming customer service--would visit again! Enjoyed the boat, monster and phoenix rolls.
google avatar

Stephanie I.

Yelp
The menu has a very good selection, but the quality of items seems to vary a bit. I would have rated 4 stars for the food and atmosphere, but unfortunately parts of the kitchen looked a bit dirty from where I was sitting at the bar.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Stop by here with a friend yesterday. Solid spot to get sushi I'd say! I got some gyoza, a shrimp tempura roll, and a salmon avocado roll. It was all very delicious. Service was fast and friendly.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
Ordered for take out and food was ready quick. Got the volcano roll and crab rangoon. Volcano roll was different than other places/original but so good and loaded! The Rangoon was also good and crispy. Highly recommend.

Charles Z.

Yelp
Takashi has been our first choice for sushi for a couple of years now and never disappoints. We tried the baked mussels for the first time and they were very flavorful. Loved the soft shell crab Hobo Spider roll. The tuna on the Red Devil roll melted in your mouth. My partner raved about the salmon teriyaki. #1 for sushi on the West Shore!

Jennifer H.

Yelp
What a superb cozy spot! The food was scrumptious and the portions were generous. Our waiter was so helpful and just attentive enough. I will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Royce S.

Yelp
Amazing food, great ambiance. Even great vegan dishes. Have been here multiple times, will definitely go again

Yelp
Amazing sushi! The Uni and Salmon are phenomenal! The sushi chefs are friendly and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend Takashi to anyone looking for great sushi in the area.

Yelp
Amazing I can not imagine life without this place. I had the spicy Kani salad and kani role also Edamame and California roll. Great service they were very nice and sat us down right away.overall this place was amazing you should definitely go

Jessica S.

Yelp
Used to be my go to for takeout for the family but ordered and it was nowhere near as good as it used to be. The food used to be amazing but today it was really lackluster and not the usual food I have ordered in the last few years. The staff was nice enough and I understand busy days happen. This particular day I just didn't have the time to wait long even though I did wait an extra 15 mins after the actual order stated it would be ready by. Perhaps they should update the online ordering better in terms of time. I was given a time and I showed up a few minutes early. Usually I never had to wait or the order was correct or maybe at most 5 minutes. But if they are busy they should update the online app as needed. This would improve service perhaps by giving a more accurate time. Several other customers waiting felt the same since they followed their time as well but waited longer. Online apps should be updated more frequently especially when busy days happen. Also I had paid extra for a few things added and they forgot it. Told me I was wrong and hung up on me when I called for a refund of missing items. No apologies for the original delay and the forgotten items. Such a shame

Amy G.

Yelp
Fabulous. My son and I stopped in for a late lunch. The place is charming yet modern. Service was good. My son wanted to start with the seaweed salad. Good, but not different from other restaurants. The rolls were where the differences started to be apparent. They have several unique rolls and quite a few common rolls but quite a few of them have a unique twist. I had recommended this restaurant to several people because I had heard such great reviews on the food. But I always gave the caveat that I hadn't eaten there, yet. Now I can give a two-thumbs-up report and confirm the food is excellent. The rolls are of good size and are presented nicely. The flavor is extremely fresh and the balance of ingredients is great. I particularly like finding actual crab options and not just the artificial stuff. We ordered 5 rolls to share (knowing we'd have some to take home). The only one that didn't thrill us was the Camp Hill roll because of the chili sauce. It was too sweet for us, but others will undoubtedly find it perfect for them. The rolls with tempura (soft shell crab and shrimp) were nice and crispy with no greasy taste. Portion size was good without being overwhelming. Seafood was fresh. Vegetables were fresh. Rolls weren't overwhelmed with too much rice. This is one place I can't wait to return to to try more rolls.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible staff. Great food and atmosphere! Will definitely come back anytime I'm in the area.

Yelp
The sushi was sooooo delicious!!! Fresh and tasty. Even the iced green tea was delicious! I'll be back!!

The employee was very friendly and courteous. -California Roll Crab stick, avocado, cucumber -Sushi Samplers (4 pcs) Tuna, salmon, white fish, shrimp -Sashimi Sampler (6 pcs) 2 Tuna, 2 salmon, 2 white fish

Yelp
Best sushi in PA!!! Such a quaint place with amazing hospitality. We sat at the bar and not even 5 minutes after ordering we got our food! We WILL be coming back. Ginger salad was AMAZING. Miso soup was hot and loaded up with seaweed and tofu. The salmon and tuna rolls were delicious. The restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere and soft music that makes dining in wonderful.
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
The sushi was amazing! Went here around 8:30 on a weeknight. It was super busy and we waited for over 20 minutes for our order so don't come hungry. But overall the sushi was good and the sweet potato roll was HUGE!
google avatar

Jarrett M.

Yelp
First time at Takashi and I am very impressed. I wasn't expecting a front row at the bar and learning about black rice. This will now be our go-to sushi establishment.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
A small mom and pop place but seriously it's wonderful. Always very fresh, tasty, and although service can be abrupt, it's always prompt. Have been here like 4 times and highly recommend it. Would eat here a lot more if I didn't live 1.2 hours away!
google avatar

Kendra S.

Yelp
Sushi here is very good. Got take out so I don't know about the service for dine-in but order was ready as soon as I arrived. The Camp Hill roll had loads of flavor. Definitely a must try. Will be coming back!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Took so many online orders they forgot about us in the restaurant. There are only about 8 tables. Seated at 6:10 and didn't get food until 7:35. I had to ask (more than once) how much longer before they even started making it at 7:25 - apparently they forgot about it. Waiting an hour and a half for food is not ok. No offer to comp anything - just said "don't come on Fridays. It's always like this.". Which is valid advice but still...no way to do business. Didn't make a fuss and paid our bill. They either need to shut off online orders or space them out more if they expect to feed seated guests. The longest we went without anyone coming by to our table was about 45 min so service was pretty awful. The sushi was ok, they got the allergy prep right (shocked considering it was more than an hour since they took the order) and the boat looked good but not worth the insane wait. On the plus side I was very well hydrated going through 2 glasses of water before we got our actual food.
google avatar

Mike I.

Yelp
Love the unique rolls (my go-to), but they also have a ton of fusion offerings on the menu as well. It's a tad noisy during the rush ... and the wait is a little longer than some local sushi spots ... but well worth it! Bring your imagination, apitite and a little patience and you'll not be disappointed.

Connor W.

Yelp
So good and yummy, the ambiance is amazing, and the service is great, I really recommended coming here. 5 stars.
google avatar

Kristen O.

Yelp
This is such a hidden gem! The dining area is small but there were only a few other tables filled on a Monday night around 7 pm. We got the crab rangoons and an assortment of rolls to share, plus seafood fried rice. The rangoons were really good in terms of flavor and being crunchy while keeping the wonton wrapped a little chewy. The seafood fried rice was incredible in terms of flavor and texture. I wish it had a bit more seafood (only had 2 shrimp, 2 mussels, one scallop, shredded krab, and a little bit of fish/salmon flakes). The rolls were so good. I definitely recommend the Boston roll and any of the rolls that have coconut shrimp - we had the Bahama roll this time. The wasabi sauce on the Bahama roll was a little overpowering but I loved the flavor of the mango and shrimp mixed together. The happy roll was good, but they forgot to torch one half of the roll to melt the Parmesan cheese sauce on top. The volcano roll was good as well. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
Best sushi around. I come from the East shore for this sushi. Make a reservation. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Philip M.

Yelp
Solidly good sushi in an almost too casual location. I went to this place because I was in the mood for sushi after seeing a movie at the nearby AMC theater and decided to give this place a try. It definitely has a more cafeteria feel, but the menu is full of good options that are prepared well. There is a small amount of parking right in front, but I imagine that will evaporate quickly if they are busy.
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
sushi is always excellent and fresh. best in the area compared to other susbi establishments

Yelp
A new sushi spot within walking distance of my office when I am working in Camphill. The outside is so unassuming but its so cute that they have that wooden Japanese doorway added to the otherwise plain building. They are not offering dine in at this time - take out only. But they have a pretty easy to use online ordering system and are very friendly on the phone and in person. When you walk in there is a table that blocks the way in but it holds sanitizer, clean and dirty pen cups, and all of the pre orders lined up and ready to go. The restaurant area looks clean and all of the staff are wearing gloves and masks so I feel good knowing their sanitation practices when handling raw fish are good. As for the food they have a variety of Asian fusion dishes like teryaki and udon. I was craving sushi because I haven't had good sushi in awhile and I must say it tasted great and fresh. As for the roll, I don't remember which roll I ordered but I don't think I got exactly what I ordered because I am not a fan of a bunch of sauce. However, it was delicious anyway. It was a roll with a couple of pieces of fish (tuna and salmon maybe?), avocado, hmm I don't even know but it was smothered with spicy mayo and siracha and also fried. It was yummy for what it was but I scraped most of the sauce off because I just enjoy the flavors of the ingredients simply dipped in soy sauce and wasabi. So happy for this option! I can't wait to try other dishes that they offer. My coworkers have tried a bunch of different things and have loved them all. You can't go wrong!
