Yelp
My friends and I went in this restaurant during the H street festival a while back. It was pretty empty, which was either a sign of the food not being of interest or the restaurant just being new. Turns out it might be both.
When we walked in the restaurant, it smelled kinda peculiar. It smelled like food which is expected, but I wouldn't say it smelled "good". When we walked out, it smelled like someone used the toilet. As for the ambiance, it was okay. It was serviceable for a sushi place.
When we sat down and started looking at our menus, I had this gut wrenching feeling that this place wasn't going to cook any meat up to standard, so I decided to order the vegetable tempura to be safe. A lot of words on the menu were misspelled and I remember the chicken and shrimp tempura's descriptions were switched by mistake. The miso soup is something that comes with the vegetable tempura and it took like 15-20 minutes to come. It wasn't worth the wait because this miso soup tasted watery. I was able to finish it because it wasn't too bad, but I've had better.
Unfortunately the vegetable tempura took longer to come, probably around 30 minutes. The same problem occurred with my friend's dishes as well. Once I got it, they tasted so bland and battery. Vegetable tempura is supposed to be crunchy!! I was very disappointed! The sauce didn't help either, it didn't make a difference. According to my friends, the sushi wasn't very good either and didn't taste fresh. I had a piece of their sashimi and I could see what they meant. It also didn't seem like it was seasoned properly.
The only saving grace in this place was our server. She was very attentive. Always visiting our table to see how we're doing and making sure that the orders are correct. She was extremely apologetic about how long the food was taking and about the quality of the food, even though it wasn't her fault. She deserved a good tip. Honestly, I wish the cooks had come out and apologized because that would be a very honorable thing to do in a Japanese restaurant.
I'd say the only thing I didn't appreciate about our interaction was when the server said that the shrimp tempura is "more popular" and heavily implied that I should've ordered that instead. What's the point of having other things on the menu if they're not gonna be as good as the shrimp tempura? I feel that if a restaurant has something on the menu, then it should be made to a high standard no matter what it is. It's possible some things might be better than others depending on the person, but if the difference is night and day, then that's concerning. I'm glad I didn't order the shrimp tempura anyway, since the batter in the vegetable tempura was soft and bland. Also since their fish didn't taste very fresh, it makes me wonder how they would've handled the shrimp.
Overall, I'd give this place the lowest score possible if it wasn't for the server being good.
