"The concept here is ‘gastro-logic’, a neologism combining the classical Greek root ‘gastro-’, meaning ’stomach’, with ‘logos’, connoting form or law. The name is the chef’s given name, written with characters meaning ‘welcome to the dinner table’. Each time a dish arrives, it is accompanied by a card inscribed with some pearl of ‘logic’. The combination of flavour, aroma and season in each dish respects received tradition." - Michelin Inspector

Rating: 2/5 Stars Restaurant Takumi - Below Expectations for Former Michelin Standard As someone familiar with restaurant operations, this was our group's most disappointing fine dining experience in Tokyo. The establishment appears prioritizing cost-cutting over guest experience. Venue: Uncomfortably cramped with low ceilings, densely packed tables, and narrow service aisles creating excessive noise. Poor space planning for a standalone venue with semi-basement kitchen—more suited to a mall food court than a former Michelin restaurant. Service: Predominantly inexperienced junior staff. We were incorrectly seated twice, relocated each time, and experienced billing confusion with apparent double-charging before correction. Pricing: Beyond the ¥21,780 set menu ("Trusted Classic Course"), expect 10% service charge, separate beverage costs, private room fees, and even birthday message charges. Management claims reduced seating "for comfort," yet space remains inadequate. Concerning approach for a seven-year Michelin veteran. Food - Highlights: Exceptional arugula mousse with sheep cheese Superb duck breast achieving foie gras-like texture Well-executed fish course with fresh salmon Some excellent mousse-based desserts Food - Concerns: Insufficient portions throughout Poor ingredient quality: Wagyu upgrade (extra charge) had excessive connective tissue and poor marbling. Standard lamb breast was nearly inedible—worst main courses at this dining level Technique over-reliance: Mousses in every course feels dated Limited innovation: Fish course conventionally executed; main course's coriander seed substitution lacked impact Dietary issue: Menu's combination of lamb and abundant aged cheeses may trigger histamine intolerance common among East Asian diners, causing post-meal discomfort Service Issues: Chef greeted us initially but kept us waiting 15-20 minutes for requested feedback session while serving another table's birthday dessert. We left when our car arrived. Conclusion: The young chef shows talent but seems constrained by budget pressures. If financial limitations are this severe, reconsidering partnership structure may be necessary. Unlikely to return, though we hope for improvement. Management welcome to respond if any misunderstandings exist.

I truly enjoyed the tasting menu experience. The craftsmanship in cooking is top-notch, and I loved the fusion of French and Japanese ingredients and techniques. The storytelling behind the menu was also well thought out—it felt like a journey. If I had to point out one thing, it would be the restaurant’s lighting. It felt too pale to do the food justice; a warmer tone might enhance the presentation and overall ambiance.

Worst fine dining experience ever — I’ve never been this upset. We were charged the full price for the “standard course,” which was supposed to be heavily discounted (40% off) while the restaurant was actually serving an “innovative course” that was not on discount. The staff never informed us of this upon our arrival. When we raised our questions and tried to clarify the situation, no one was willing to help. The manager even told us that he didn’t care how their pricing system worked. After expressing our concerns, the staff stopped introducing the dishes, stopped greeting us when clearing plates, and even handed us the course explanation in Japanese (while everything had been in English before that). The food itself was okay, but with service this poor, it simply doesn’t deserve a Michelin rating. Highly not recommended for overseas guests.

Takumi is a one star Michelin restaurant on one of the side streets in Nishiazabu. It is a small restaurant with only six tables with simple yet elegant decor. We had an opportunity to try this place since we had a gift certificate for their Furusato Nozei course using ingredients from Shiranuka Town in Hokkaido prefecture. The food and service here is Michelin quality. Everything we got, both seafood and meat dishes, were delicious and beautifully prepared. We were also surprised at the amount of deserts that we got. In addition to the palate cleanser and the main dessert, we got another tray of petit four and three out of the four were almost as big as a single dessert. We were definitely full after the meal and were glad that we were walking for almost half a hour after we had left the restaurant. What also sets this restaurant apart is that they bring you a card with the descriptions of each dish as they come out and don’t spend a long time providing an explanation about each dish. While this is a great restaurant, this place is not for everyone. For one thing it is very quiet so it may feel a bit awkward for some people. For example, when we got seated at our table, it took about 15 minutes for us to place our drink orders and then get the drinks because there were only two waitstaff, but it felt a little uncomfortable because it was so quiet and we felt like we couldn’t really talk during those first fifteen minutes. The noise level got better as the night progressed and we got our food, but I would say the restaurant is still pretty quiet compared to average.

Fantastic restaurant! The chef did a fantastic job of blending fresh ingredients, mixture of different ingredients that expand your tastebud, and the sommelier did a great job of selecting tasty wines that pair well with the dinner. You can expect classic French cousins like Foie Gras, abalone, caviar, perfectly cook Wagyu steak, desserts, etc. All in all, highly recommended!

Michelin 1 star restaurant - better be good, and it was good. For every dish the chef prepares a written explanation together with a sample of real aroma (I.e. a leave of basil) in a small bottle, for every dish, so we can smell before eating. Simply amazing amount of preparation. Wine paring (but expensive, but within expectation of the 1 star) is really well selected, too. My 3rd visit - worth coming back from time to time.

The ingredients are carefully chosen, and they are provided as is to smell and understand the flavor more. Their sweet selection is amazing.

This shy unassuming chef is creative and produces food to delight you. 5 of us were here in late January n though months have passed, I feel compelled to give him the review he deserves. The crew were attentive and tried their best to please. I thought the atmosphere could have been just a teeny bit more upbeat though In any case, kudos to the chef!!
