The 20 Best European Christmas Markets to Visit This Winter | Vogue

"For the last six centuries, a Christmas tree has stood regally in the center of Tallinn’s historic Town Hall Square every single year. (This year’s even reaches 15 meters high.) The medieval Estonian capital, overlooking the Baltic Sea, also hosts an annual market replete with festive atmosphere. Pay a visit to Santa Claus in his cottage on the square, drift over to the stalls to hunt for handcrafted decorations and cozy sheep wool knits, or fill up on sauerkraut and blood sausages washed down by specialty mulled wine. (There are also Estonian gingerbread cookies and cinnamon-cardamom pastries for those with a sweet tooth.) To finish, watch a spirited weekend performance by regional folk dancers and musicians." - Nicole Kliest

Estonia's Christmas Markets

"Centered on Town Hall Square, this festive market unfurls around Tallinn’s legendary Christmas tree—the very spot where Europe’s first public Christmas tree was displayed in 1441—with the city running a September contest to find a full-bodied fir or spruce with dense, symmetrical branches that’s lit at the official opening. From the square’s center, characterful wooden stalls radiate outwards selling woollen scarves and jumpers, sheepskin slippers and blankets, hand-crafted leather gifts, and tree decorations and carved wooden ornaments; overhead, fairy lights glitter against fluttering snowflakes during the short winter days (Tallinn receives just six hours of daylight at the solstice). Warm up with a spicy-sweet mug of glögg—traditionally a mulled wine or spirit flavoured with local berries and fruits, now also offered in non-alcoholic forms—while watching visitors of all ages spin on the carousels, then seek out the piparkoogid stalls for ready-made cookies, intriguingly flavoured doughs, and stunning gingerbread creations, including some made to a “health-benefitting” medieval recipe that border on works of art. If you’re feeling hands-on, head to the craft workshop to make your own Christmas ornaments or try your hand at a reflector (mandatory attire on Estonia’s dark streets), or simply grab a seat by the weekend stage for classic performances in traditional dress while tucking into sausages, potatoes, stewed sauerkraut and black pudding with lingonberry sauce. Opening hours are 10am–10pm from 22nd November 2024 to 27th December 2024." - Elizabeth Winter

I had read so much about the Christmas market and, to be honest, I was slightly disappointed. Half of the stalls are mulled wine stands, although I must say that the wine was extremely good and available in many different varieties. What makes this market worth visiting for me, however, is the warmth of the Estonian people – and the folk groups on stage were simply adorable.

Tallinn’s Christmas Market is an absolute gem! Nestled in the heart of the historic Old Town, it feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The cozy wooden stalls offer delightful handmade crafts, festive treats, and warming mulled wine. The twinkling lights and the towering Christmas tree create a magical ambiance. It’s a perfect spot to soak up the holiday spirit and experience the charm of Tallinn at its best. Highly recommended for a memorable winter outing!

Christmas market is nice and small but gives a vibe of santa in winter with hot cocoa in hand and cinnamon bun

What a fairly take like place to be. Not particularly very big like German markets but very beautifully located in the old town square the market is open from 9-9 and brings delightful experience. Great shops & activity & food booths so all will find reason to visit it. Sellers are friendly . Christmas Market has many traditional performances done on the large stage built next to the shops. Many food options & several interesting shopping . A must see market

This was way worse than expected. We came here just for Christmas Markt cause we read good things. The only good part about it is the location on the historic market square - this did not disappoint but now what is not even close to what I expect from a Christmas Markt: 1) most stores sell cheapest made in china stuff you can get on Temu for hundreds of percent markup 2) the mulled wine is expensive and quite frankly disgusting. We tried three different one, it seems to mostly not even be wine (even some claim falsely Glühwein) but juice with vodka or something 3) the food is also expensive but low quality - sausages look good but… 4) the performance provided has nothing to do with Christmas but is a collection of random dances and weird Santa show calling up foreigners to sing songs?! While the dances were of decent quality they don’t fit. 5) it’s a tiny market - even tiny villages in Germany feature considerably bigger ones… All in all a waste of time and money. We came here for two days to enjoy Christmas Markt and spend about 1 hour there and now rearranged what we do.

One of the most beautiful Christmas markets I've been to. Great atmosphere, always some program and music + great mulled wine and something to eat :)
