Tầm Vị

"This vintage tea house feels distinctly North Vietnamese with its nostalgic collection of Chinese furniture, hand-written signs and an antique gramophone and telephone. They serve Northern Vietnamese dishes with some central and southern options. The Vietnamese ham with periwinkle chả ốc (snails) comes with fresh herbs, vegetables and rice vermicelli with fish sauce. The subtle crab soup with canh cua mừng tơi (malabar spinach) comes in a clear broth." - Michelin Inspector

I've visited several Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants, but Tam Vi is the first with an actual star that I had the chance to try. Despite the backlash it has received, I enjoyed my dining experience here. The food is reminiscent of home, evoking a sense of nostalgia. It's clean, fresh, and unpretentious -like a warm hug served on a plate. Here’s what we ordered: • Vietnamese Ham w/ Periwinkle Snails 🐌 Rating: 10/10 💯 A definite must-try! I dream of this dish! 😍 Super duper fun play with flavors and texture without blasting your tastebuds. • Caramelized Pork & Egg 🐷🐣 Rating: 9/10 🙌 Flavor is very balanced and comforting. It actually reminds me of my mother's cooking: I would have rated this higher but some of the leaner cuts of pork are a bit dry. • Banana Flower and Pig Ear Salad 🐷🍌 Rating: 7/10 👍 The pig ears give it that nice bite and chew while the banana flowers, I can’t really distinguish from the other veggies. 😅 The dressing is tasty though and made the dish coherent. It's good but I probably won't reorder this. I’d maybe go for another salad next time.

We loved everything about our lunch here. We didn't have a reservation but they catered for my family of 4 quite quickly. All the staff were just so friendly and helpful. They even asked if we wanted to move to a better table when it became available... Something away from the busy entrance. Food came out quick and tasted fresh and really good. Caramelized pork belly and grapefruit prawn salad were my favourites. Given they were awarded a Michelin star, I can see how some people may have expected a lot more and then rated them lower.

We found this michelin place through recommendation. Booking a spot was not a hassle and everything was smooth. We had dinner, took their morning glory, braised pork , and some other dishes. All dishes were served quickly and they even gave us some advices as the portion were big, so they let us know if what we ordered was enough or too much for us. The service was beautiful, all staff were very friendly. I would love to come back next time coming to Hanoi again!

We did not have a reservation so we had to wait for 15-20 minutes. But they were able to sit us in the end. The food came fast. Caramelized pork was really tender, the cabbage rolled pork was really good, but the star of the show for me was the morning glory with pork belly. Too too flavorful for something so simple. Would recommend getting a reservation for faster service, tho

Overall thoughts: We'd made a reservation a month prior by email, like many others it seemed, and unfortunately, the arrival process was quite chaotic. Staff struggled to manage both reservations and walk-ins, leaving everyone standing around without a clear system. A popular restaurant like this would certainly benefit from using a proper reservation platform to streamline things Thankfully we didn’t have to wait that long for a table - perhaps 15mins or so. Tam Vi offers an overwhelming yet delightful array of home-style North Vietnamese dishes. Opting for the set meal for 3-4 people, it perfectly satisfied three of us. The food truly felt like a home-cooked feast; unassuming dishes surprised with spot-on flavors. Highlights included the delicious betel leaf-wrapped meat, delicate fried tofu, and melt-in-your-mouth pork belly. While some items like the boiled vegetables and non-wrapped spring rolls were unremarkable, the overall experience showcased the authentic heart of North Vietnamese cuisine. It might not be a "shout about it" Michelin star experience, but the genuine care in each dish shines through.

Other than the squid salad, the food came out really quickly which suggests they keep some of the food prepared before hand. Understandable because it is always packed. The food tasted good. The squid salad was my favourite and it paired really well with the pineapple. The clan soup was delicious and the black bean rice and greens were also nicely cooked. We loved the grass jelly with Lotus seeds drink. Perfect for a hot summer day. The service is good and we got our table immediately because we made a reservation.

If you’re visiting Hanoi and want to treat yourself to a Michelin-starred experience without spending a fortune, this place is a must. The food is truly on another level — each dish is crafted with so much attention to detail, unique in flavor, and beautifully balanced. You can really taste the quality and creativity in every bite. The service is equally impressive — super friendly and professional without being stiff. They make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Prices range from around $110,000 to $175,000 VND per dish (about $4.50 to $7.00 USD), which is honestly amazing for the quality you’re getting. It’s an experience that feels luxurious yet accessible. Highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time — this place is popular for a reason!

The place had good food and presentation, but it was surprisingly ordinary. I was slightly disappointed at the stir-fried beef with bamboo as it lacked a bit of flavor and it was mostly bamboo than beef. I recommend getting the spring rolls and the snail dish as it was the best we’ve tasted during our meal. The pandan soymilk tasted like taho if you’re interested in getting that.
