Where to Find the Best Tamales in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"For the past few years, Elia Nixcugtla, who hails from Sierra Norte de Puebla, has been selling tamales from a small cart shaded by a rainbow umbrella alongside the O’Reilly Auto Parts store on Venice Boulevard, just west of Western Avenue. This cart has found a following for having extra moist corn husk tamales, which cost $30 a dozen. The cart has tamales rojos and tamales verdes, both filled with chicken, as well as rajas con queso. On the sweet side, she serves a tamal dulce of pineapple, raisins, and strawberry. Pull up to the curb next to the stand early for delicious, hassle-free tamales without the long waits. Monday through Saturday, 5 a.m. to 12 p.m., Venice Boulevard just west of Western Avenue." - Bill Esparza

Called to place an order for breakfast, but I was told there only selling tamales today. I went to the restaurant to purchase some tamales and seen the ladies making food for orders 🧐. When I got home to eat my tamales that I just purchased, the MASA was very powdery and did not taste good. My family and I always come here to buy tamales by the dozen but something different something has changed They’re not the same tamales as before at least they don’t taste like The original recipe.

Andrea Valencia

Google
I been a customer for over 10 years before they opened this second location. I loved their tamales as they had plenty of sauce and a very good flavor. Recently they have changed their recipes and it’s no longer the same. The shredded chicken is now cut into small cubes which were dry and lacked salsa. Although the masa is soft it was also very dry and plain. The jalapeño tamales were alright nothing special and the pork tamales were dry and lacked flavor much like the chicken tamales. Other dishes are alright, tlacoyos are pretty good.

KAREN KLEBRIGAN

Google
This is a hidden gem for tlayudas and tlacoyos. I m also a big fan of their crepes 😍they are very clean and the service is always great. You might wait for the food just because it’s made fresh. I come once or twice per month ever since I came first (2 years ago).

Google
Everything that I tried here at this little Mexican spot in a strip mall, just west of Chinatown, was delicious! Love the fresh tasting, handmade tortillas and the few Oaxacan specialty items that I tried, including chorizo, black beans and cactus salad. I also really enjoyed the tamales, particularly the chicken with mole tamale. And the sandia was so refreshing (and tasty) on a hot day. You could really taste the watermelon flavor, rather than just sugar water with a dash of watermelon flavor. Small place, but the two women that were working there are clearly very attentive to details and keeping a clean and organized kitchen. And, they were both very friendly and accommodating.

Google
Well Google had the wrong address but thankfully after 15 minutes of a walk later I finally found this spot which had moved from its original location. Service was Slow - and they take your order at the counter and then if you decide to eat there, things come out slow :( they only have 2-3 people working the counter and cooking. It is a very small shop and they do a lot of takeout orders it seems. Tamales - were Ok. I've definitely had better. The rice plate with refried beans were Ok (not great) - rice felt like overnight reheated old :( Ordered a Crepe to try as well, and the portion was smaller than expected. With a sprinkle of salad, this will likely not be something I order again. Seating inside is available but you'll get some of the fried smoke into your clothes since it's not quite well ventilated being a small place.

Google
Get delivery every year for Christmas and this year was the best ever! Love that you can get a mix of tamales in your dozen. So, so tasty!!

Google
i love this spot. amazing prices and super friendly. great salsas. thank you!

Google
Great find, the tamales are delicious I always purchase 2 dozen of 2 diff. types and share them with friends and almost instantly they're hooked on these tamales.

Yelp
I was excited to get tamales de elote, but to my surprise they didn't have any at the moment. Husband wanted the chicken tamale and they also didn't have any as well. I ended up getting spinach and chessse, mole with chicken, pork and pineapple tamales. To be honest they were not the best, the masa was good, but the filling needed more flavor to it. Portion size was small. As for drinks I got a champurado, it was good. Customer service was ok. It is a small place, but we got there early so we were able to sit and eat.

Yelp
I was looking for something easy to pick up for breakfast and they nailed it. I ordered the green chilaquiles with scrambled eggs & chorizo and it was delicious. I naively thought the green would be less spicy than red but it had a lot of heat! The portion was excellent too. The server was sweet over the phone and in person and the place was very clean & uncluttered. I look forward to trying more!

Yelp
I came across this place walking down Sunset Blvd thinking of getting something small to eat. Crepes really caught my attention. This is a very small place with very few seats. They make mexican food and crepes, kinda an odd combo but im good with it. The staff were friendly, its a mom and pop kinda business. I got the veggie crepe and it was really good! It came with a small side of salad. I would recommend this place! Stop in and support small business!

Yelp
Best tamales so far! Ratio of filling to masa is perfect. Masa is soft, not hard as rock. Every year, my bf and I try to find a good tamale place because the place we tried the year before is meh. We have tried Liliana's, Tamale Man, Tamales Los Angeles, La Morena, Guisados, Maria's in El Monte, Rosie's in Sylmar, various home cooked ones...Alberto's is the best by far!

Yelp
I absolutely love the tamales here! I'm so used to eating dense, dry tamales that lack meat and sauce, but Tamales Alberto are the complete opposite. They are moist, flavorful, and even a little spicy. I've been here a couple of times now and the tamales seem to always be consistent. They're always served hot and the salsas offered on the side seem to be the same ones used in the tamales (except for the mole). Very very good salsas, don't forget to request for them and some sour cream too! Gotta dress up the tamales with every color! The Tamales are also perfectly portioned out even with the meat, no matter which ones you order. My favorite here are the mole Tamales, they even tend to be a lil crispy on some of the edges which give it the perfect bite. The restaurant is small, but very cute. Service also seems to be consistent with excellent service. Do yourself a favor and order one of each next time you go, or at least try a different on your next visit, because you'll definitely be back for more!

Yelp
These are the kinda of places I hope always grace our gentrified neighborhoods! I just ordered a breakfast burrito! No requests! I wanted it how they serve it! The first bite, got men. Flavor filled! These tortillas aren't over the top, where your first bite is just tortilla! I will always support a small business Mike this that authentically does it with care!

Yelp
The most authentic, delicious, richness Mexican food in Los Angeles!! My mouth waters just thinking about their quesadillas with (everything in it of course: cilantro, onion, salsa) ‍ chef's kiss!!!! My forever comfort meal. Photo is a different dish that just hits the spot!!!

Emilio O.

Yelp
The tamales were delicious. I bought 3 dozen for an office party and everyone enjoyed them. They were not shy with portions of meat either. The service was great as well. Ready on time when promised and they offered plenty of plates and utensils to go with the order.
google avatar

Yelp
Always great! I get the pollo asado plate and it's enough for 2 meals, but you might have a hard time putting down the fork. Lol

Yelp
The last time I was at tamales Alberto it as their original echo park location, that was five years ago. It made such an impression with the tastiest chilaquiles ever that I had to come back. I was so glad I came back. Literally my favorite chilaquiles ever. The heat level on the verde is perfect. They use the perfect amount of queso fresco, and I seriously fell absolutely head over heels in love with their toast. So simple and delicious. The service is also great and makes you want to come back. If you love chilaquiles this place is a must

Fancisco M.

Yelp
Localizado en el corazón de echo park se encuentra este pequeño lugar lleno de sabor y tradición, muy auténtico lo recomiendo ampliamente Recomiendo que prueben el plato de Carne Asada

Yelp
Tamales Alberto is located on the other side of the city for me. I don't frequent it often but I wish I did, it's so good!! Maybe it's a good thing it's a distance from me LOL I would be here everyday if allowed. They have 3 different locations. The first one I went to, I ordered a dozen tamales for a friend and I to eat at the park. They have over 14 different flavors and OMG they're deliciousssss. This location, I ordered a champurrado (it was chilly outside), a tamal de pollo con chile verde, and a mulita de carne asada and a gordita de chicharron con chile verde. It was soooooo funny! I came with a friend and I submitted my order, and the lady taking my order asked me, "just ONE drink?" She had thought I was ordering for the both of us. No, it was all for me. Funny! Everything I ordered was amazing. My favorite was the.... No, lol, literally everything was my favorite. I can only imagine how well they do everything else! Order ANYTHING, you can't go wrong. Someone give them a grant to stay in business forever!!!!!! Everything was also affordable. Before landing on Tamales Alberto, we had looked at a few trendy brunch spots, and I'm sure we would have dropped $20-30 on one meal. I paid around $16 for everything I ordered- and you saw, I ordered a lot! I saved some to go, I couldn't finish everything, so technically it was two meals. The only feedback I would give is to add oil to the hinges on their door! They had a lot of customers come in and out and the door kept staying open and it was cold outside. I had to get up out of my seat a good 5 times, it was disturbing me from enjoying my food.

Yelp

Yelp
I'll hedge this review by saying that I've never been to the original Tamales Alberto, and in my experience a secondary location often falls short of the expectations set by the OG. Regardless, my experience at Tamales Alberto 2 fell a bit short of the hype that radiates off of the first location. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Tamales Alberto 2 is nothing fancy, and I'll set your expectation now by saying that you're not going to see a group of little old ladies hard at work making tamales in the back. You've got steam tins, there are tamales inside them, and you're served those tamales more or less immediately upon ordering. That's it. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? The tamales at Tamales Alberto 2 are on the small side and the quantity of filling can really vary based on which one you get, but given they're all priced around $1.50 each you can't really go wrong. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? So I ordered three tamales during my visit, and it was very much a tale of three tamales. They were out of several so I ended up with Beef/Red Sauce, Pork/Green Sauce, and Jalapeno/Cheese. My first Pork/Green sauce was pretty weak, with not a lot of filling and a sauce that really couldn't breach the corn when it came to flavor. From there the Jalapeno/Cheese was equally disappointing as it all kind of tasted like cheesy mush. However, the Beef/Red Sauce (pictured) was phenomenal, with amazing flavors, loads of meat, and a spice that had me sweating. Single Star. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? I need to check out the original plain and simple, but in the meantime Tamales Alberto 2 can be great so long as you win the luck of the literal draw. No Star.

Yelp
While Mom was getting her hair done, I popped in here for a Breakfast Burrito. Previously, this place was a taco shop, but now it's Tamales Alberto 2. Parking: Small plaza with limited spaces. If it's packed, there's some surrounding residential parking (watch out for signs). Mom: "Wow, this tastes so bland. Why didn't you get tacos from the place that you usually get it from?" Me: That place no longer exists. The place that made this Breakfast Burrito replaced them. Mom: "Not good." Took only two bites and hands back to me her half of the Breakfast Burrito. $8.00 Breakfast Burrito served with tortilla chips was not worth it. Presentation wise, it looked good. However, taste wise, that's another story. Filled with eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns and cheese, it tasted very bland. The bacon wasn't even crispy, the sausage had no savory taste to it and the hashbrowns was hella mushy inside. The only enjoyable parts were the flour tortilla, the fluffy scrambled eggs and melting cheese. Also, served with tortilla chips, which tasted alright. Not oily, thank goodness. Drink: I would've considered getting a champurrado, but after reading Yelper Alex C.'s champurrado review, I decided not to get it. I had my Voss water bottle in my car. Service: Not the greatest. The guy ordering before me got great and attentive service. As for my Breakfast Burrito, it was hella slow. Basic ingredients, nothing fancy. After 10mins, I finally got my meal when the cashier noticed my slightly annoyed look. I can't imagine how much slower it would've been if they had more customers or the lunch rush service. Overall, $8 wasted here. Had the Breakfast Burrito tasted good, I would've gotten tamales next time. Shame about the food and service. Jack in the Box down the street makes tastier breakfast burritos. Will not be returning here.

Yelp
The chilaquiles are my new favorite breakfast in Silver Lake-Echo Park -- and it's probably hard to make great chilaquiles.

Yelp
I wasn't a big fan of the Tamales from their Original location, but I'm always willing to check out new locations even if same ownership. Service was very friendly and on the plus side they do have a parking lot that's shared with several other businesses, I don't recall the menu but they are more than just Tamales.... serving several Breakfast items also Tacos, Burritos, Tortas etc... Breakfast Burrito ($8.00) https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=HH5M8jFT4cx323C1lDpE9w&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, Hash Browns and Cheese, average size Breakfast Burrito maybe $1 overpriced, but it was all good, plenty of Bacon and Sausage, eggs were scrambled nicely, hash browns were browned nicely, all very well cooked https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=TeJVg46abXYn9DzWdCwbzA&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg and grab some of their house made salsa https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=GvXJCR-LXVkcCyOLZqKg7g&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg both Roja y Verde were good! 4.5-Stars Tamales ($1.60ea - $18.00 Doz --- I got One Dozen Tamales and found them to be very inconsistent, some much more filling than others, some Masa not spread evenly leaving exposed filling, ALL the Tamales seemed to be under-cooked, the masa still wet, when you picked it up to eat it just fell apart. Oddly they were better the next day after reheating. Mole con Pollo - https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=4y4bG07vq7FtepAC2ZksLw&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg I love Mole and I remembered this was my favorite at other location, taste was great, but as you can see from the photo the masa has separated and you couldn't pick them up to eat https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=ODo5AKUU70IQeeCccJUy_Q&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg good tasting though. 4-Stars Pollo/Verde - https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=o6hudw_xjGIiAIIzuLQvmw&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg You can see how the masa has just not set, it's separating exposing the filling https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=o6hudw_xjGIiAIIzuLQvmw&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg in this case the "lack of" look how thick the masa is and barely any filling, what chicken/verde was there tasted good. 2-Stars Puerco/Roja - https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=H_CJdNdrtbyNrnLwmldR8w&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg Yeah you get the idea of how poorly made these Tamales were, https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tamales-alberto-2-los-angeles?select=42TZL5xV8_X8yS45iifrpg&userid=mXl8GMozjLoraG7PyFHWkg this one had more filling but flavor was just OK. 2-Stars I'd return to check out the Tacos, Tortas etc...but pass on the Tamales!

Yelp
I heard this spot had great / cheap tamales...and they live up to their reputation! A hole in the wall place in Echo Park near Dodgers Stadium. It's an authentic home-cooked experience, with the nicest ladies who cook all the food/prepare the tamales! I prefer this over all the new bougie spots opening on Sunset Blvd. I called in for same day pick-up of 2 dozen tamales, and they were able to have them ready in about an hour! And this was the morning before Thanksgiving. Once I got there, the ladies were so sweet and accommodating. I also ordered a cafe de olla, which was a tad off in flavor (a bit sour) but still drinkable for me. The tamales were amazing! Came piping hot and labeled so you're not guessing what's inside. I ordered the sweet corn, queso jalapeño, and pollo verde. All sooo good! I love it with the salsa verde which is the spicier of the two they have available in the store. They also have breakfast dishes, and prepackaged tamales ready to grab out of the front fridge. Definitely coming back here!

Yelp
Delicious comfort food, affordable and amazing service are some of the best way to describe this place. This is the second location of Tamales Alberto. First location is on Temple. The place is tiny with even more tiny open kitchen area. They're not only serving their tamales alone or in combo plates with rice and beans. They also have Mexican breakfast and lunch plates such as chilaquiles, huaraches, tostadas, gorditas, molletes, burritos, aguas frescas, cafe de olla etc. Check out their menu below. They also have sweet tamales such as pineapple and strawberry. My all time favorite is their strawberry tamal with cafe de la olla for breakie. It reminds me of Chirstmas eve breakfast when my Mexican neighbors/friends share with us their bombdiggity home made tamales. Service is great and prices even greater. Small private parking lot shared with a laundromat and a few other business in the plaza. I absolutely love everything about this new place in the neighborhood. So if you're in the area give it a try you won't regret coming here.

Yelp
Dodger Fans this is right behind Dodger Stadium on Sunset. Go to the bottom of Vin Scully and turn right a few hundred feet on the left side of Sunset. Same as the #1 place on Temple except this place has parking. Very popular at lunch. 3 Mexican mothers in charge of the kitchen. Only goodness can be the result. Got 6 tamales to go with my tinga burrito. Burrito was black beans, mexican rice, cilantro, onions and lots of spicy tinga. Grab a cup of salsa with your order because the take out has lots of chips.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
Incredible tamales, the most delicious cafe de olla. I went in for breakfast and then immediately came back to pick up more tamales for later. A lovely, welcoming atmosphere and great service! Will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Tamales are consistent. The service is great but the stores can be a bit dirty. The atmosphere can be a bit plain. Nonetheless, it's good.

Joe C.

Yelp
This is a great spot for tamales in Echo Park. The verde with chicken is one of the best! The customer service is great and friendly. It's awesome to have this location in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Great place for tamales. Not so great for service from a certain employee. Ordered 2 champurrados and. 4 tamales to go. We tasted/sipped the champurados before paying and noticed the flavor was very bland and off which was upsetting because the grain like texture just made it less appealing. If the issue was just the champurrados, the employee at the register took care of us...however she called out who I assume is the person in charge of the drink. She tasted it and said in Spanish "tastes just fine to me". We didn't agree and didn't take the drinks. As she walks away she says "it's just missing etc" (didn't hear her completely). If the drink is missing an ingredient, don't act like it still tastes good. First employee was the only reason we didn't just leave from those comments. Also they heavily sugar the coffee but not the champurrado??

Michael R.

Yelp
Great spot! Tried their Tacos and they were great. Would definitely come back next time if in the area. The customer service was good and fast.

Nallely G.

Yelp
Hoy visite esté restaurante después de meses. La comida sigue muy rica y fresca. La amabilidad y servicio de las trabajadoras fue excepcional. El único problema es que tendré que ir más seguido por que ese tlayuda estuvo de 100!!
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
The name can be deceiving bc they do sell great tamales; but it's the items on this menu that make this restaurant great. Everything is made from scratch & you can taste it in the food. The owner brings in her Mole from Oaxaca & It's one of the best Moles in LA; dark, almost black & smoky. Try the "Tlayudas" which look like a 14" pizza made on a thin handmade corn tostada loaded with black beans, Oaxacan string cheese, 3 types of meats, avocado, lettuce, & tomato; delicious.
google avatar

Rafael L.

Yelp
If you're in need of a full portion bfast. Definitely recommend the. Chilaquiles Verdes. Mouth watering, make you sweat spicy, delicious and savory flavor. If you're into that authentic Mexican spice. The coffee is full of flavor. Cafe de olla. Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
Some of the best tacos and tamales I've ever had. Very small spot, nice staff and good price. Definitely a killer place for tacos, but the tamales are seriously tasty too.

Yelp
I really recommend this place. The food is really delicious! The two ladies are super nice. My torta and sope were delicious that I ate everything by myself. Let's support our local restaurant. This little restaurant is better that other Mexican restaurant on Sunset Blvd.

Yelp

Josh W.

Yelp
Love the place on Temple and so glad to see an affordable and truly family run spot pop up in the midst of the bland, whitewashed expensive restaurants that pop up on this strip. I love breakfast but truly everything is incredible here!
google avatar

Patricia A.

Yelp
I have bought Tamales from their location on Temple great taste. I hoped that since it was a new location they would have the tamales listed available but to my disappointment it was the same deal. They had 3 out of 12 options. It sucks because they specialize in tamales yet they don't have them available. The girl said she had 2 corn tamales but I would have to warm them up at home.

Dana A.

Yelp
Spinach tamales address my favorite. Masa melts in you're mouth like buttah. Will order again, again and again!
google avatar

Shawn G.

Yelp
Trying to support small business during the corona virus madness? I was, so I stopped by to try this place to get a dozen tamales to bring home. The two ladies working there were super nice. They served us a tamal, then we placed our to go order for 12. Honestly all of the flavors were good but I recommend the queso con rajas the most!
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
I got spicy green chilaquiles they were perfect !! I love that you can customize the spicyness whether you like it mild spicy or hot!! They as well have cool tamales like bean and cheese tamales & they also offer vegetarian tamales such as spinach & cheese !!! So yummy will def be coming back !
google avatar

Neil Y.

Yelp
Chiliequilles verdes so bomb. Come buy a dozen tamales to take with you to the Dodger stadium and feel like a genius.
google avatar

Kiara G.

Yelp
The girls here are always serving up some good food with even better customer service. I had to warm up to this plave since it is under new management. I always go for the taco plate with black beans and rice. So delicious!

Ana A.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat. Food is good, affordable and the service has been very good too!!

Yelp
I got a chicken tamale and a pork tamale with rice and beans. Tamales are decent I guess but a bit small and bland. Could def use more seasoning and better meat to masa ratio. Staff was very nice.
