Where to Eat in Denver’s LoHi Neighborhood | Eater Denver

"Keeping it old school, this LoHi longtimer has likely not changed its menu in decades, nor should it: After all, the vast majority of its customers are here for the namesake specialty, filled with red chile and pork or green chile and cheese and topped, of course, with more chile. (There’s also an outpost at the airport.)" - Josie Sexton

Google
My absolute go to for smothered breakfast burritos. I love these smothered burritos and sometimes buy a quart or two of the green chile to pour on breakfast hash browns at home. The tamales are also amazing.

Carter Nelson

Google
Love the crispy chile relleno, solid sides, great spicy green chile. This is the christmas tamale spot, gotta be on top of it during the holidays but it's worth it, love getting a dozen or two whenever I stop in to stock up the freezer. A little corner of the old Northside stands strong, I hope it never changes

Google
Great experience here at Tamales by La Casita, first timer at this establishment, it was recommended by my mom and when it comes to tamales or Mexican food she's very crucial on the food and service.. But again she was right about here.. Food was great, service was fast and the atmosphere was very chill...I had there 2 tamales and 2 overeasy eggs on top and it was awesome the beans where decent and the sauce was spicy but it was just right.. It was a little pricey but it's worth the price I think.. In a very good neighborhood with easy parking access didn't get to try their root beer float unfortunately but I will next time I come... They seem very popular as I saw multiple customers buy them while I was there... Employees where very nice.. The girl who took my order was very sweet also beautiful gave great service also but didn't get here name.. They do also sell beer and margaritas also!! Very clean restaurant!! Definitely recommend if you're ever in that area! 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💯

Google
Come here often to get the tamales and burritos. You just can’t go wrong. Great for the holidays and the pricing is very affordable. A single tamale is like $1.60 and a dozen around $14.60 If you know how hard tamales are to make you deeply value their quality at this restaurant. Definitely check out for great homemade Mexican!

Google
Amazing, authentic tamales. Inexpensive. I love the red tamales but the green tamales are also legit. Highly recommend getting sides of the red and green chili. Friendly staff, clean establishment.

Hector Guerra

Google
Arrived at 5:15am on Friday, December 22nd to purchase two dozen of their delicious tamales. I was about the 15th person in line, first person in line mentioned they arrived at 4:30 so take note for this coming holiday season 🫔 The good: Delicious and authentic Mexican food Nice, friendly staff that provide excellent customer service Indoor and outdoor seating Serve alcohol TV and free papers inside Offer food to go Fast service even when busy Clean dining room Clean bathroom Delicious green chili Free calendar at the end of the year (thank you!) The not so good: Some items may sell out early in the day Small parking lot that is normally full through out the day so plan to park in the immediate neighborhood and walk over They can get busy

Heather Lucero

Google
Great flavors but what is this? My last order of tamales have no filling! No meat. Disappointing

Burton Fleisher

Google
Fantastic tamales, both green and red, wonderful shredded beef burritos on homemade flour tortillas and an Denver "egg roll style" chile relleno. I would get everything again except for the relleno. Amazing bang for the buck in a really comfortable clean restaurant. The counter service was helpful and polite.

Yelp
I love La Casita because they have the most delicious food. They are open very late, but that's OK. We will just go during the day. I love the enchiladas plate. The tamales are good too, but the green chili is the best. I've tasted in a long time and I grew up on the north side.
google avatar

Yelp
Hadn't been here since before pandemic era. Stopped by to get lunch but it was just not good. The taste, the quality of the food, the customer service, literally all down the drain. I wouldn't recommend it anymore.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick service and yummy food. I ordered a breakfast entree during my layover at the Denver airport and it did not disappoint.
google avatar

Corrina A.

Yelp
The green chile and cheese tamales are the best. But, the red ones are really good too. The masa is just perfect and not at all dry. I would definitely recommend for the best tamales in town.

Yelp
After reading a Denver Post article about how they sell 18,000 tamales a day, my interest was piqued. I purchased five dozen tamales here both green and red, and we were not disappointed. Fantastic all around. Nice people. Stellar service.
google avatar

Yelp
I went and had breakfast, which was really good and took home a dozen tamales. So now when I'm in the area to go to Lechuga, I'll go across the street and get a dozen tamales.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
I ate there today & was disappointed. I've gone there many times & enjoyed their food. Today was not good my food was cold & not very enjoyable. I left half of it. I'll go back again but they need to know they failed today.

Yelp
La Casita is known for the best tamales in Denver. If you plan to get tamales at Christmas time, plan to wait in line! They have a full menu of Mexican food for eat in or take out but the tamales are really why most people visit. Find your parking on the street if you can. There is a parking lot, but there are a lot of cars coming and going so it is challenging to navigate. Don't bother calling in to place your order. You will need to wait in line like everybody else. Everybody is congenial, don't worry. Bring some gloves if it's cold outside. If the line is halfway down the block, expect about 45 minutes. Not too bad for the best tamales in Denver.

Rich G.

Yelp
Very tasty food, fresh and hot. Enjoyed the breakfast burrito and thought the green chile was very good. Tamales were good. Enjoyed it a lot, would like to come try again for lunch/dinner.

Victoria A.

Yelp
I have been eating at La Casita for the past 30 years. They have the best green chile and tamales. The portions are very generous and their prices are fabulous. This family owned restaurant has become my family. they are all so friendly and the place is always welcoming and so clean. My adult children and now grand children love this place. Victoria
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
This place has the BEST tamales and pork green chili in town! They also have vegetarian tamales. Those are a bit spicy for my palate so I just stick to the red pork tamales for.

greg s.

Yelp
First visit yesterday. 1 dozen red tamales (they were out of green) 2 pints of green Chile (ordered after our 1st order because it was so darn good) 1 shredded beef burrito with sour cream. OMG it was so good. Now I am thinking I can make it there for lunch from my office. 1 red tamale (also delicious) 2 sophapias, so light and fluffy with powdered sugar and honey on the side, just wow wow wow 2 margaritas which were pretty good. Definitely will be back, potentially Tuesday for lunch !

Yelp
As a Hispanic that move here from Texas, this is Americanized Mexican food. Not what i was expecting, its over hyped enchiladas tasted more like chilli cheese, handheld burger is basically a burrito with a burger patty inside it had more beans than meat. Tamales the masa don't have seasoning on it, has more salsa then meat. Not authentic Mexican food

Doris G.

Yelp
The pice for a dozen tamales is very expensive. The tamales are dry, not a whole lot of chile and meat and mostly masa. I was very disappointed in the quality. No thanks not going there again. I ended up throwing at least 3/4 if the tamale away.

Yelp
Lunch with friends who are co-workers. You order at the counter and find a seat after. No table service. Seating on the patio and inside. They do get a rush at lunchtime so plan accordingly. Lots of seats when we came as many were taking their food to go. I decided on the tamale plate with chicken and pork, green Chile, beans and a tortilla. They had our meals made fairly quickly even with the rush. Called our name and we picked up the dishes from the counter. Large portions. We also ordered chips and salsa and Guac. The salsa was super tasty - slight bite and flavorful. Yum! The tamales were delish. Tender and juicy fillings. The green Chile was nicely seasoned and a nice complement to the tamales. My friends' burritos were large and looked good. After our meals we bussed the table and placed our dishes in a tub. I would like to come back for more. They do have an attached private parking lot but it does fill up. The servers were friendly and helpful. They did bring over a dish that was not ready when the other plates were. It's nice to dine where people are happy.

Yelp
If you're eating huevos rancheros somewhere else, you're missing out!! Don't forget to order one of each tamale & a side of bacon
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
Best tamales ever, anywhere. Julio was great he made me an amazing margarita for the best price in town. Also had a smothered burrito. This green chile is a hidden gem. Best in town. Bet.
google avatar

April J.

Yelp
First time in Denver, and this place was super delicious. Their green sauce is out of this world. I'm sad I didn't get a tamale, but I guess that just means another trip is definitely needed in the future. The food was generously portioned, and their margaritas are on point. Definitely a "must-try" when in Denver.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch at Tamales by La Casita when were in Denver for a few hours before heading out west for a wedding. This unassuming place specializes in New Mexican food and has been open since 1974! The food was really good. I had the tamales con huevos plate: two smothered tamales, two eggs, and frijoles. I chose red and red (red chile braised pork and red chile salsa smothered on top - spicy and delicious) with two over easy eggs. The only negative thing I have to say about what I ordered is that the portions are enormous, so I wish I had been fasting for the morning so I could have finished the whole plate! It was delicious. My husband got a breakfast burrito - smothered and with cheese - which he enjoyed as well. The place is cute - traditional and not fussy. And the service was great as well (you order at the counter and bus your own table, so I didn't have too much interaction with staff - but they were helpful and friendly during the ordering process, since it was our first visit)! Absolutely would return.

Yelp
We love the tamales! We don't live close by but we make it a point to stop by whenever we can. You'll see how popular it is, lines of locals come here when there are so many other choices nearby. The margaritas To Go are also the best!!!
google avatar

Megan A.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. I get the beef and bean burrito smothered with green chili, lettuce and cheese. It is so good.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Love love love this place. I believe its one of the best and delicious green chile around. Must get the tamales, duh. And try the mexican hamburger handheld or smothered.
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
I've lived in Denver about 8 years now and I've definitely been sleeping on Tamales by La Casita. Finally found a place with real New Mexican cuisine. I had to order a red chile frito pie. Highly recommend it!!!
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
No ham breakfast burrito (forgot not on menu) so I chose the breakfast sausage. Then I asked for the customary sopapillas, if they have them made already, but not today sadly. So anyway that burrito was one of the best I've had and even New Mexicans would be proud. I was one for 8 years and hearily recommend Santiagos on south Eubank Blvd or Golden Pride Chicken if ever in Albuquerque . For Denver its Crown Burger on south Colorado Blvd or Little Anitas, Twisters in Aurora, Jalapenos in Lakewood, or Tamales at La Casita up here in the Barrio. You will not regret it probably, highly recommend them so skip anywhere else locally in Highlands.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
Now this is the place! For FIFTEEN DOLLARS 2 of us are satisfied. authentic, filled with love, made by grandmas. Fast good food.
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
I've been coming here for thirty years. Incredible family run and owned business. They are very kind. The tamales are the BEST in Denver hands down. Waiting in line every year just prior to Christmas is one of our favorite traditions. We see the same people who drive in from all over Colorado to get their traditional Christmas Tamales. It's amazing how food connects people. This place connects people with love, happiness and amazing Tamales. Please give them a try, you will be thankful that you did.
google avatar

Austin H.

Yelp
A few recommended this place for the tamales. I got one red tamale and a breakfast burrito and they were both very good. We arrived during the lunch rush and received the food very quickly. The green chile sauce was really spicy, but dam delicious
google avatar

Caleb M.

Yelp
Can't recommend swapping out beans for the hashbrowns when you get the green chili tamale plate. They're buttery and salty and just work well as a vessel for the sauce, which is a little acidic, with nice viscosity and a comforting level of aromatics. The only disappointment was the talames themselves, which were just kind of plain. They are mostly a delivery system for the green chili, but the hashbrowns definitely did it better.
google avatar

Luna M.

Yelp
All the food is always on point, the green tamales are my favorite and customer service is always excellent!
google avatar

Dale Z.

Yelp
Old school, tasty, filling, and flavorful. Despite hearing such accolades, I had never made it through the doors at this Denver landmark. I finally made it, and was not disappointed. The sign on the door indicating "cold tamales only" was apparently there to dissuade large orders. We were able to get hot food and cold beer. I went with two tamales (one red chile pork and one green chile cheese) smothered in green chile, with a side of refried beans. I had corn tortillas on the side. The heat level was perfect, hot but not overpowering. The flavors were solid. The service was good. Prices were decent.
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
Still the best place in north Denver to buy homemade tamales- These days with work and busy schedules making grandma's homemade tamales is to hard to make my own- For special occasions such as family gatherings, my family can still depend on La Casita's to provide the authentic experience taste of a real Spanish tradition. My suggestion is both green and red Chile tamales with their tasty green Chile to smother on top sided with their Spanish rice for the full experience of a memorable meal-

Mark A.

Yelp
Great tamales and they keep it simple - 2 choices: shredded pork (red) and cheese and chiles (green). Get a little of the green sauce to put on the green tamales, and same with the red sauce on the red tamales. They have other great choices for other Mexican dishes but it's the tamales you want. They sell them in dozens and half dozens. Nice patio for eating. Sometimes simplest is the best. Try it you won't be disappointed. Go earlier in the day when they're freshly made.
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
This place is dope. Green chili is the real deal but the red is so good, probably my favorite. Obviously, there tamales are tasty; both meat and veggie are great. My favorite dish is the tamales with two eggs and a Mexican Coke. BUT PLEASE...FOR THE VIGIN MARY's sake STOP using Styrofoam and plastic utensils.

Melissa B.

Yelp
The food is always good. However the customer service is awful depending on who is working the counter. The older folks seem to have better customer service vs the younger folks who are too busy on their phones and eating food. This is the second time I have ordered at the counter to go and my food just sits getting cold while I watch several customers order and get their food. I have left a message for the manager to make him aware we will see if he cares enough about customer service to return my call.
google avatar

Robyn B.

Yelp
Amazing tamales! Exactly what you want: steaming hot and full of flavor. Do yourself a favor and have an inexpensive and delicious meal by grabbing some to go tamales!

Rachel N.

Yelp
I bought 6 dozen of mixed tamales. Always so delicious, fresh & very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Lucy L.

Yelp
Been buying tamales for years but the last time the ojas/corn husks had what looked like black Mold , I have health issues so can't eat them , the manager Julio was rude and unaccommodating about the situation, will not be back beware of mold on the corn husk .
google avatar

Yelp
I used to live bordering North-side Denver but then 100,000+ of my newest BFFs decided to move in during the last 5 years and turn it into the densest inhabited space in Colorado outside of a termite mound. And now like so many things that change over time it just doesn't have the magic it used to have. In social science literature there's a highly technical term for this occurrence: It's called, "Getting f***ing old." But what's the flip side of that coin? The answer is La Casita. La Casita hasn't changed their great street-like food for decades. And aside from a nifty remodel a while back they still make the same incredible tamales with kick your taste-buds salsa rioja y verde, and as importantly, wonderful tortillas and frijoles refritos tellingly made with pure lard. Ummmmmmmmmmm. So no matter the length of time, it's always like coming home when you hit up La Casita. And don't just believe me. Tripadvisor (which I rarely read but stumbled on when I asked Ms. Google where the best tamales were in Denver), with no equivocation at all replied, "La Casita~!" https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g33388-d379624-r121955692-Tamales_By_LA_Casita-Denver_Colorado.html. And ya know what? I totally agree and so will you. Now take a visit to their corner spot at 36th and Tejon and see for yourself. Sign me, David "cabesa di manteca de cerdo" M.

Yelp
After returning a couple more times I am updating my review. Their breakfast burritos are the best in town, the service and employees are always great. It is awesome having a location in the airport as well as it is leaps and bounds better than other food offered in DIA
google avatar

Annarose S.

Yelp
No frills mexican spot for excellent tamales. I love both the red and green, can't choose a favorite because they're both so delicious. Their breakfast burrito is fine but not my preference (most of the filling is soft, almost mashed potato). Service is friendly but have had a couple of issues with not getting all my food, or paying to add chorizo to the burrito but not getting the chorizo, but they've been great about fixing it. I just recommend checking your order before you leave.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Had the green Chile plate and tamale. Both were excellent and the people working were very nice. Food came out quickly and prices were great. I already want to go back.
google avatar

Neål A.

Yelp
Wow! What a surprise! When I was a kid, grandma use to get tamales from a corner hot dog shop for lunch. I remember them being one of the most amazing flavors and have the fondest memories of lunch at grandmas. I haven't found a tamale as good until I had the Tamales By La Casita! A+++ very flavorful, particularly with the green sauce. Great price too. Large and satisfying meal for $9. Also, friendly staff, very fast service and a laid back atmosphere. I'll be a new regular to La Casita.

Anthony M.

Yelp
We have been going to Tamales By La Casita for decades. The food and service has always been excellent!
google avatar

Glenn I.

Yelp
I love their red tamales. Consistently good quality and always friendly service. I wish I lived closer to them.
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
BEST tamales in Denver! Went for Xmas tamales the week of Xmas, crazy busy but the line moved fast! Got both the red and green tamales, both were awesome. Add a pint of red chile to smother and enjoy!
google avatar

Nolan P.

Yelp
The tamales were fantastic. The green chili had an earthy punchy flavor while the red chili had a nice slow building burn. It was all amazing. Worthy of one of the best places to eat in Denver!
google avatar

Neeha I.

Yelp
Their breakfast burrito with chilli was the bomb! Going back second day in a row to get more of it and try other items.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
The hubs and I love a good tamale, especially New Mexico style with green and red chili. We came here for lunch today. My choice was the green chili and cheese tamales with Christmas chili and a single chili relleno. The hubs got the beef burrito, red tamale and cheese enchilada combo plate. We both noticed that our food was tepid right away. Setting that aside, the green chili is very good. Big chunks of pork and a nice hit of heat without being too salty. The chili relleno was a fried pocket filled with cheese but no discernible chili inside just the green chili on top. It was very tasty although not traditional. Overall all of our food was very good and we would definitely come back.
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
My family and I have been faithful customers of La Casita since the late 80's. I now have to ask who changed the tamales recipe!? The red tamales don't taste as good as they did before and the green tamales are too spicy now. We couldn't enjoy the green chili tamales at all, because of how spicy they are. I always thought their tamales were the best, and now I'm wondering what the heck happened? If I have this experience again in the near future, I'll have to find a different restaurant for tamales.
google avatar

Yelp
As a transplant from Texas, anytime i mention I'm on the hunt for good tex-mex(ish) or Mexican food, Denver natives always mention this place (in addition to another staple restaurant). Hubs and I have been on the hunt for a good tamale place so with no breakfast plans on a recent weekend, we decided to give it a try. Note to folks looking for authentic Mexican food: this is definitely Colorado/SW flavor! Ambiance: on Saturday morning around 10ish they were fairly busy. Luckily we were able to find a table for two upon arrival. It's typical small diner decor and tables, so grab a seat and get comfy. Tables are on a first come first serve basis with menus at each table. The waitress/ hosts will stop by to grab your food and drink order. If you're grabbing a to go order or don't want to wait, place your order at the counter. Food: Tamales are in the name so, yeah, get tamales. We went with a half dozen mixed green & red chile. Hubs also ordered a ground beef, bean and cheese burrito. The tamales... the red ones were my fave & by far the best I've had in Denver. Just enough of a kick and tasty. The green ones- I wasn't a fan. The burrito had the cheese on the outside (¯\_(ツ)_/¯). Overall, for $15 bucks, it was a steal. We'll be back.
