Where to Find the Best Tamales in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Representing the municipality of San Juan Tabaá in Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte, Salomé Lopez Fabian came to Los Angeles to make a better life for her children through the tamal business, where she also preserves Zapoteco culture inside the Washington Place strip mall. In front of the 99+ Bargains store she sells banana leaf tamales filled with mole amarillo de pollo, mole amarillo de puerco, tamales verdes, rajas, and tamales de frijol — a rolled bean tamal steamed with fresh avocado leaves typically eaten with soup. Lopez’s tamales and guisos are a hit in the Serrano community for their traditional preparation. Washington and Western inside Washington Place, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday." - Bill Esparza

Google
The mole chicken tamales (brown/red sauce) were so good! Tried them at Chicano Park Day and immediately bought 2 more!

Yelp
I heard about this place from a few friends. I love moist tamales and took the trip to get here. Almost drove past it as it's in a small shopping plaza with a lot of people around. I didn't see the cart as it was kinda hidden. They were out of Res and Pork so I got the green chili chicken and Mole. Both were very good. Very authentic and delicious. Wish they had a little more meat but it is what it is. They were $4 each. I will be back for sure. Maybe earlier to make sure I get the Res.

Yelp
I wanted tamales for Christmas and was not sure who had good ones. I called this place and was told they had them. When I arrived they were out, so I contacted the owner who graciously offered to make me some. I was so happy he was willing to do this so close to Christmas. we froze them for the travel. When we arrived to our families home we steamed them, they were amazing! Our favorites were Chicken mole and Chile relleno cheese. I admit I was hesitant being that it was a cart I bought from but the servers and owner were very pleasant and helpful. Thank you

Yelp
The tamales were 8/10 in my opinion, the champurrado is made from water 7/10 (I prefer milk based champurrado). The lady that was there did not provide great service. It seemed like getting back to her conversation was more important than helping out her customers. I was also talking to her in Spanish which I heard her speaking before I stepped up to order. Location was a little rundown, but overall an 8/10 experience.

Yelp
Too much maza not enough salsa and meat. Chicken was dry tasted old or something. She's got good spice and everything but just way too little of the salsa....

Yelp
I left Trang's Seafood Market, and walking to my car, noticed a tamale cart. Actually, what I noticed was a small crowd of people standing around a cart, eating out of tin foil wrappers with plastic forks. Construction workers, teenage kids, moms with laundry baskets on wheels... Everyone looked happy, and it was lunch time, so I sidled up to see what the fuss was about. It was about decent Oaxaca-style tamales, chicken mole wrapped in banana leaf. Other selections were pork, beef, pineapple, cheese and to wash it all down, the classic Mexican breakfast drink, champurrado (atole de chocolate). Ay... Dios Mio! Not the best I've had, but one of the better tamales Oaxaqueños I've eaten north of Ciudad Oaxaca. And at the price, a great value and a nice find.

Yelp
For last 2 years my wife and I have been going to this place to get Tamales for Christmas Eve. We get there early Christmas Eve morning around 6am. We usually get about 60 to 100 tamales. Each Tamale is $2.50. They have Cheese, Pork, Chicken, And Raja. I've tried them all and they are delicious.

Yelp
Big, generous tamales wrapped in banana leaves, steamed, and delicious. I had the chicken mole, a rare treat. It had a little heat and spice, tender chicken, riquísima. The man who runs the cart seems is kind and patient without my morning scatterbrainedness buying the tamales while trying to figure out the bus on my phone. I hope he makes its of money in our neighborhood and sticks around. The cart is the best addition in years.

Yelp
This place isn't too bad, it's a little cart with tamales inside and they have a jug of champurrado which is hit and miss, it is tasty when they get it right though. And they take cash only

Yelp
Tried this place because I've been craving tamales. Super moist and generous portions. Spice was great and I am definitely stopping by again before I leave.

Yelp
Super gross would not waist my money on them! Tamales seemed undercooked. I would rather spend my money at Garcia's Puebla Mercado tames they are fresh and good !!! Don't go to this outside cart shit place!!!!

Sunny S.

Yelp
We tried six different tamales and they were all really good. Never had pineapple tamale and my husband and I both really like it. I would definitely stop here again.

Yelp
These have got to be the best chilie/cheese Tamales I've ever had. Wow, so good!

Yelp
Delicious tamales! Very authentic. Had the beef and Chile con queso. Both delicious and nice and spicy! Highly recommend this little cart.

Yelp
Very good tamales; easy to order by phone or in person. We've had chicken mole, chile verde, and even pineapple. They come wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves. Great for the holidays or just about any get together, these tamales are a fail-safe party pleaser that can impress even the most die hard tamale fans. Viva Oaxaca!

Yelp
Best tamales and champurrado; its always good to be able to drive down to City Heights when craving mexican hot chocolate and mexican tamales. I love it. Very proud to be a mexican. Dont knock until you try it. Besides we all live in California history in my people.
