This Food-Filled Road Trip Celebrates West Virginia's Appalachian Culture | Bon Appétit

"A rest-stop-style marketplace that showcases West Virginian artisanship—jams, jellies, pickles, stained glass, and handmade furniture—alongside a cafeteria-style café where you can try local-caught trout, fried green tomatoes, and peach bread pudding while chatting across the glass shield; the lively mix of locals makes it a fun spot for people-watching despite its truck-stop feel." - ByCrystal Good, as told to Jen Choi

A nice place to take a break from driving, but if you aren't interested in buying art pieces, it might not be for you. There were plenty of nice things to look at and some local food items (think jams and jellies). There were a few t-shirts and souvenir items, and a place to get some snacks and sit. If you're looking for local hand-crafted pieces, this is the place.

Google
Striking building housing items made or designed in West Virginia. On the outside there's a local artist sculpture garden, picnic table area, small playground. There are tee shirts , blown glass, wood creations, Fiesta Ware dishes, honey, jams, other food, many other items too for sale and a cafeteria and indoor seating area. I thoroughly enjoyed the rainbow trout from West Virginia dredged in seasoned cornmeal and pan seared topped with lemon butter sauce along with the local roasted mushrooms and mashed potatoes with gravy. You pick your meal. Extensive menu including fried green tomato sandwiches.

Google
We love stopping at this welcome center. There is so much beautiful stuff here. So many talented artists of every kind. Prices are reasonable for the quality. I also had a chicken salad sandwich here. Very delicious! Will definitely stop again.

Jeffrey Berman

Google
Architecturally unique and beautiful building that's open, airy, clean, and modern. Amazing variety of high quality items made by local artisans. Love that there's a workshop for wood workers, glass blowers, and pottery. I highly recommend that you check it out and I'm looking forward to visiting again soon!

Google
The restaurant is clearly the winner here. Large portions that taste fantastic. The chicken pot pie is recommended. The crafts are splendid, but most priced very high. $50 for a coffee mug. ? That said, our friends still purchased a $300 jewelry box. Very nice place.

Google
This is a must see art center. Plan at least an hour and buy lunch, or picnic if you are in an RV. We did a glass blowing session, picked up some yummy salsa and spent time perusing the best of West Virginia art and craftsman.

Google
Local WVA display and sell art, crafts, glass, leather, baskets, weaving, quilts, honey, pottery, soaps and lotions and much more!! Food is available in their cafe. I missed the glass blowing! You can watch and you can do glass blowing. What a treat for art enthusiasts!! No admission fee and free parking!

Google
Great beautiful stop through the road, found amazing food, art & culture representing the region on every step of the marketplace. Lovely experience!

Yelp
I've been coming/stopping at Tamarack for ten years now--even I can't believe it! I first stopped here on the way to a Habitat for Humanity trip in NC when I was a graduate student. And to see the way this rest stop/art gallery/museum/gift shop/bookshop/cafeteria has evolved over the years is amazing! I love how they're focused on curating books, merchandise, and even food from West Virginians. If you pass by here, you definitely want to stop! I always recommend it to traveling folks. There's indoor space, outdoor tables, RV/motorhome parking, and space for your pets (they can come inside). The bathrooms are always orderly and clean. Trust me, this is where you want to rest and grab something good to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Tamarack is always high on our list of places to stop when driving through the area. Always good and clean restrooms. This trip was no different. Bathrooms didn't disappoint. We did stop for breakfast. Overall it was pretty good. Definitely got more than we should have ordered. Good coffee and refills too. Well done

Yelp
Rainbow Trout In my younger years, I used to catch Rainbow Trout. Now it is well worth a detour and a few dollars to order Rainbow Trout and fried Green Tomatoes. A true Appalachian Adventure Not soul food, but Mountain food.

Meagan H.

Yelp
3.5 stars. We planned a stop on our way through and thought it would be much bigger. We found it expensive for almost all of the items. It is an interesting model for selling. But not a place to just pick something up driving through WV.
google avatar

Yelp
We absolutely love, stopping at Tamarack. Great place to walk around and stretch your legs wonderful art. The value of the food is amazing all locally sourced I ordered pork chop brined in tea with red potatoes and corn succotash portions are great and this meal cost almost as much as we spend on breakfast at Waffle House without the heartburn.
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
This place is SO darling! Definitely worth a road trip pit stop - local artisan works, a gallery, and even glass blowing classes! You can watch the artisans at work making pottery, glassworks, and woodworking! Small but very tasty restaurant that's order at the counter, indoor and patio seating, and ready to go foods and ice cream! So glad we stopped here!

Yelp
When driving on Interstate 77 in West Virginia, you see signs for "Tamarack-The Best of West Virginia". After driving by for years, at the advice of a friend we made a stop and have since been back many times. The Tamarack Marketplace has just about everything from an artisan's viewpoint. Instead of junky crafts you see at so many places, you see local art of all varieties. We looked around the entire marketplace the first couple of times we visited. but all subsequent visits were on account of the excellent food court. Food is catered by The Greenbriar Resort and it raises the bar for a food court several levels. We both ordered chicken pot pie as we have on most other visits. Outstanding does not adequately describe how good this dish is. Huge chunks of chicken and a crust to die for makes this dish perfect. Since COVID, you now order at a "temporary" station and your food is brought to you. Even though it is a food court, staff is very attentive with refills and anything else you might need. Deserts range from peach bread pudding, coconut cream pie and cherry cobbler. Tonight like most visits, we were to full to have desert. Reasonable prices and outstanding food makes Tamarack a great stop.

Yelp
This place is hard to miss from the road, so naturally, had to pull over & check it out. Rainbow trout, fried green tomatoes & greens. Nice tasty portions & dessert was peanut butter pie. It is rich & decadent so its definitely shareable. Afterwards to ward off food coma & burn off some calories, walk around & browse the different store fronts & galleries.

Tony And Michelle M.

Yelp
I would stop here regularly when this was run by the Greenbrier and the food was outstanding. Now with the generic copycat that has replaced it the food really wasn't worth the detour off the interstate. I got salmon over rice and the salmon was dried out and hard as a rock. I also got strawberry rhubarb crisp, but the bowl was completely filled with and whipped cream and had a tablespoon or two of Barb or strawberry jelly at the bottom. It was terribly disappointing. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that it was a bad day, but I'm not making that detour again.

Yelp
Beautiful stop when traveling on the West Virginia turnpike. The facility is clean, and parking is ample. The entire place is like a large doughnut, so no matter which direction you go it's a big circle. There are plenty of restrooms, a little soup and sandwich shop to dine at with small tables, and an abundance of local art. We came during the holidays, and the facility was nicely decorated for Christmas. Although we did not eat at the Tamarack, I did take a look at the menu and the prices. Food was a bit expensive, and all of the art on display was also pretty pricey. But definitely unusual gifts up for sale, if you're looking for something unique.

Yelp
We literally stumbled upon this spot leaving our hotel the morning we were heading out of town. I was so blown away by the facility I walked away wondering why there aren't more places like this around the country. Part gallery, part shop, part educational center, part restaurant and cafe, part bookstore, and so much more. I loved exploring their offerings like ceramics, blown glass and fused pieces, wood carved figurines and instruments, coal pieces carved into little figurines, quilts and other hand sew pieces, locally made food like jams, jellies, baking mixes, chocolate, honey, etc. There's also a gallery with paintings, sculptures and figurines made from unconventional materials, etc. It's built like a circle so walking through it is easy and you won't miss a thing as long as you keep going in the same direction. They also have several studios behind glass that you can look at while browsing their wares. The studios include ceramics, glass blowing, woodworking, textiles (there may have been one more but I'm blanking on it). I love that they offer these space along with an opportunity to showcase and sell their work. If I were in the area I would love to take a class or workshop here. I can't speak to the food here as I did not eat at the restaurant but I did get some pepperoni rolls to go from the cafe and those were total bangers. I also got a friend who had been kindly watering my gardens a gift, a beautiful ceramic bud vase and some maple syrup. She absolutely loved both! It's not a undoable drive from us here in Detroit so I still keep one eye on their events calendar. I hope we can make it for a performance or workshop one day!

Yelp
It's more like Tamaracket. The signage is horrible trying to get out. There is a road out the back of the plaza that routes you to the area with the next exit and you can get back on 64-E. Beware-the plaza is completely changed. It used to have many restaurants, a Starbucks and lots of bathrooms with a small gift shop. When you get off the exit, it is now a plaza that has parking broken in small groups for parking. It wasn't awesome. It's hard to find a parking spot. Now the new building is a very large gift shop and to get to the bathrooms you have to walk through them into a smaller restaurant area. When you leave it's easy to miss the road that gets you back on 64-E, and if you miss it you have to pay a toll to Tamarack to do a U-turn to get back on 64-E. This used to be our go to but not anymore. If there were better signage it would really help a lot.

Kevin W.

Yelp
This place is great they have a little something for everyone. They even have moonshine jelly.

Yelp
Perfection is the only way I can think to describe this place. It's basically an upscale mall stocked only with regional artisan wares Including the Market. Our meal was beautiful, true to the roots of the cuisine and absolutely delectable. The chicken potpie had a flakey crust with a velvety chicken, peas and carrots mixture underneath that was savory enough to illicit memories of food made with from love. The fried green tomatoes were exactly the right mix of corn meal and flour with no sauce overwhelming the green tomato taste. Too many times I get fried green tomato's prepared with so much sauce that it distorts the flavor of the fruit. Not here! They got it right and true to the dishes roots. Well worth the stop and if you can stay for a few hours and support the local artisans, it will be time well spent. It's right off the interstate, dog friendly areas and plenty of parking. Staff is gracious and accommodating too. A perfect place to stop and spend time soaking up the regions best.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is beautiful and has a lot to see from the outside and the inside. Plenty of artwork, shops and food to experience during your visit. The restaurant serves great fresh meals and there's a specialty coffee shop nearby that you have to try. If you're interested in fine Fiesta dinnerware, this place has a great selection.
google avatar

Cara R.

Yelp
They have a new restaurant here and it's pretty good for the cost. You walk up to order, get a number, and they bring the food. They have simple food like burgers and chicken sandwiches, but they also have entrees. I was skeptical about how the quality was going to be, but it was good. They also sell souvenirs, art, and snacks in the building as well as have restrooms. The only problem with this place is that the parking itself is quite a hike to the building, and then it's also quite a walk to the restrooms after you enter the building. I need a knee replacement, and it was a difficult walk. If you need to stretch your legs and get some food, this is a good place to stop.

Yelp
I can't quite put my finger on what exactly Tamarack Marketplace is, so I'll just list some of the things I observed about it. It looks like a small indoor mall inside. There are little areas to shop for local West Virginia products, like wine, honey, baked goods, artwork and artisan creations. In another area is a gift shop and ice cream parlor. In another area is a restaurant. In another area is a coffee shop. In another area is an art gallery. The inside is shaped like a big circle, so as you wind your way through, you'll eventually end up where you started. OK, now the outdoor space. There's a patio area where you can dine outside or just sit and relax, with beautiful plants and water features all around. In another area is a small playground for young kids. There are outdoor statues here and there. Oh, and this place is super dog-friendly. There are doggie water bowls at the entrance, and dogs are allowed in the patio area. There's lots of grass and space to walk your dog, too. Tamarack Marketplace is a lot of things, but basically, it's a great place to stop and use the restroom, stretch your legs and get a cup of coffee and snack before heading back on the road (like we did). It's an ideal road trip rest stop in West Virginia.

Yelp
Yelp 100 - #10 March 2023 Tamarack Marketplace is a gallery with a cafe and coffee shop inside. The marketplace is in a circle with outdoor seating available in the warmer months. Order Kids cheeseburger and french fry West Virginia Hot Dogs with slaw, chili, mustard and onions. The food was just what we needed after a day of visiting The New River National Park which is just a short drive up the street. On a beautiful day, I would defiantly grab a bite and come back and sit out.
google avatar

Barrett O.

Yelp
Needed a break so this was a cool stop. Browsed some shops & ate at the restaurant. Fried chicken, sweet tater fries & coleslaw. It's a big lovely complex with warmly decorated retail store, working studios for resident artisans, a fine art gallery, a theater, A Taste of West Virginia food court, and the Tamarack Conference Center. Bottom line: It's a great place to stretch your legs, eat, use the restroom, get inspired for more time on the road, and maybe buy a hand crafted piece of local artisan art.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Large selection of local crafts and foods for sale from a wide variety of WV artisans...only downfall is the prices are very high.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
We came specifically to get a bite to eat. I was sorry to see that the Greenbrier no longer handles the food because they had some really excellent choices. That being said, we decided to try this newer iteration and split the two hot dog and fries. They were okay, but the onions seemed to have a lasting flavor into the next day, so maybe they were old. Considering how busy they were, they did move the line pretty fast, but it took much longer than I expected to bring the food out. If I remember correctly, when it was Greenbrier you picked up the food as you went thru the line, but I could be wrong. Anyway, we wouldn't make a point to stop for the food anymore, but still would come by to see the beautiful work by WV artisans.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this location because the travel center is torn down. Well, we found a new stop. Beautiful place. Lots of locals gems for sale. Was excited to sit and have lunch. You stand in line to order, pay, and then they bring you your meal to the table. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Food was awesome. Grabbed some treats for the road.

Yelp
A nice place to stop right off the highway. After a long drive my Mom and I needed a break and stopped at Tamarack Marketplace to use the bathroom, get some food and stretch our legs. The food at the cafe was good, although it did take awhile for it to be brought out. My Mom got the biscuits and gravy and really enjoyed it. I got an omelette and it was okay, but the inside was still runny. After eating we walked around and looked at all the artwork and other craft items for sale. Most items we saw were VERY expensive so we didn't buy anything. Definitely a good place to stop and take a travel break.
google avatar

Megan F.

Yelp
Fabulous market for snacks and souvenirs! This place is essential for both the food options at the cafe, with chefs from The Greenbrier resort. And the artists and gifts that are all like an art museum! They have art on display and for sale. Plus the bathrooms are very clean and they have lots!! I loved my sandwich and shopped in THE GREENBRIER boutique. Amazing!!
google avatar

Lidia H.

Yelp
Lots of variety. Nice place to enjoy the meal. We got the Ruben, chicken pot pie, and meatloaf. Our favorite was the chicken pot pie!
google avatar

Kaci F.

Yelp
I've been to Tamarack on several occasions, including College fairs and for leisure. One day, I took my son and he had a blast. I was really surprised to find hot dogs on the menu. I was even more surprised at how delicious they were! I'll definitely order hot dogs again. My son really enjoyed looking around and it was great for teens and preteens who are interested in learning about Appalachian culture.
google avatar

Antonio A.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way from New Gorge National Park to grab a quick bite to eat. The WV Hotdogs inside of the market are fantastic! My wife ordered a kids Cheeseburger (it's actually adult size) which was great as well. Clean restrooms and some additional shops inside.
google avatar

Jill H.

Yelp
I know what you are thinking. It's a rest area. I thought the same thing a couple years ago and then I was kicking myself for how many times I passed it! Their food is delicious. Typically if I'm "passengering" I get their soup. Their new England clam chowder is insanely delicious and FULL of seafood. Yesterday I got the fried green tomato panini. It was so delicious and full of flavor. The perfect amount of meat. I'm not sure if the batter stuck to the tomato the way they intended but combined with the garlic aioli it was the perfect combination. Must get!
google avatar

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Such a cute place to stop in! A lot of one of a kind handmade gifts, everything from soaps to home decor and anything in between. Great for shopping any time of year but even more so for Christmas shopping. And their cafe has some delicious food. I tried the fried green tomatoes sandwich. They could have been fried harder but it was still delicious regardless. They have a nice size menu of various options to chose from

Alexander A.

Yelp
Prices are too high for the quality provided. The products are not made well and food is not up to par for the price.

John R.

Yelp
My wife and I had dinner at The Tamarack's restaurant yesterday (10-21-24) and were disappointed. I don't know if it's under new management or what but we were sadly surprised at our food. It had been a couple years since we had eaten there and yesterday's dinner was a huge let down from years before. The price was prohibitive at 48.00+ dollars but aside from that the two servings was such a let down to our previous dinners in years past. We will not be eating there again. Such a let down!
google avatar

Yelp
Tamarack Marketplace is a great place to check out local art and culture. I have been here twice on my way to Virginia and it is always a treat! They are open every day except Tuesday. Have plenty of free and accessible parking. It is a one-story building in the shape of a circle so you can start at the front door and walk all the way around to see everything it has to offer. There are also lots of helpful staff that can explain to you the history of Tamarack, help you find a certain item, or give you some visitor information. Inside Tamarack you'll find locally made food items (wine, jellies, honey, etc.), home goods, woodwork, ceramics, glassware, and so much more! You can sometimes watch artists at work at Tamarack and even take lessons with them to make your own unique piece. There's a cafeteria where you can get a sandwich, salad, or a little dessert. It's a great place for all ages and I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Lucy A.

Yelp
Every time I go I love it more! I already stop For food here b/c it has the Greenbrier cafe ( yes the famous Lewisburg WV Greenbrier) and the chefs are trained there as well. You can't go wrong with a brunch here in the weekends and can even get brunch cocktails now in the art room! I love to walk around to see all the beautiful art and come back for dessert from the famous Greenbrier peaches at the cafe! It's a must if you are close by!

Yelp
I think I'm internally an 80-year-old, as kitschy highway-side gift shops definitely pull my attention, especially after I've been driving for 5+ hours straight. [This was before COVID-19 took hold, of course.] All the signs along I-64 in WV eventually lured me in. It's right off the highway behind the Beckley Travel Plaza. They have a decent sized parking lot, outdoor art, and a clean interior. There's a cafeteria, state-themed gifts, local food, and art. I popped over to the local food, mixed a 6-pack of beer (check the dates -- some turned out to be several months old), grabbed some kettle corn for a driving snack, and bought some maple syrup as a gift. The cashier was super friendly and asked everyone where they lived. I heard lots of Ohio, and of course I was in the neighboring state of Virginia. Easy in, easy out. Nice stop to take a break from the curvy roads.
google avatar

Ira W.

Yelp
Very interesting concept in a mall like setting. Lots of vendors selling crafts of different varieties such as pottery, woodwork, and various other items. There is also coffee, snacks, and food with plenty of places to sit either indoors or outdoors.
google avatar

Toby R.

Yelp
We stopped here, a half way point to a trip from OH - plenty of crafts and t-shirts. The restaurant was busy, the food mediocre at best. We had the wedding soup which was watery with a few beans in every other spoonful. Greasy sandwiches.. not recommended: in my opinion you are better off getting a hamburger in Berger King or a Happy Meal in McDonalds
google avatar

Donna C.

Yelp
Great choices! Great shopping. We had two amazing luncheons on a cold day. Our food was served immediately.
google avatar

Denise S.

Yelp
My two sisters and I stopped here on a fall trip on the way up north. Everyone said if you go through West Virginia this is the place to stop. They have great locally made crafts and some are quite exquisite. The food is also good. We ate lunch at the main restaurant and I had a great meal of veggies.

V N.

Yelp
so nice of tamarack to have an event with blasting music that can be heard inside my hotel room over a mile away. This should be illegal. I wasted time the other night driving around their closed facility listed as a rest area and now I can't even rest in my hotel room! I WOULD NEVER SHOP AT A PLACE THST DISRESPECTS THEIR NEIGHBORS LIKE THIS! REALLY AWFUL!
google avatar

Cheramie M.

Yelp
I liked the atmosphere within the facility. They have really nice items that are uniquely priced, for a lack of a better word. Now the food was overhyped by my indulgers. My pot pie, although finished in entirety, was drier than powdered milk. The chili was super sweet, almost as if it was meant for a hotdog just not my stomach. The peach cobbler bread pudding was delightful, however. I would probably return but maybe choose something else before I write them off altogether.

Abigail M.

Yelp
I am a local and grew up going to this place. If you are a collector or tourist it is a great spot to visit. I love the memories connected to it and it is always clean. For kids there is a train with marbles in it for pretty cheap. I do agree that most things are expensive but I do think the food is worth it. They are also known for hosting proms and small shows

Jessica R.

Yelp
If you're staying in Beckley you need to check this place out. It's a collective of local artists and makers, with so much variety. Here is where you'll find a truly unique souvenir, new coffee to try, home decor, or fine art. There really is a bit of everything. Pottery, woodwork, stickers, jewelry, crystals, stained glass, crochet goods, handmade soaps. We stopped in for dinner as well while we were there. Food was pretty good, service was fast. I had the hummus and veggie sandwich and would definitely get it again.
google avatar

Gabriele P.

Yelp
Stopped by to stretch my legs and grab a bite to eat. The reviews were pretty good. It's a bit of challenge to find the entrance coming from Beaver/Beckley. The building is round and full of interesting artisan work. It's has a nice courtyard if you want to sit outside. The food choices are ok and not for the health conscious people. Staff is very friendly but a bit asleep. I ordered the Ruben and it was well presented and ok in taste. Lori from tamarack shop was the highlight with her cheerfulness

Hannah H.

Yelp
This is a nice place in Beckley, WV to shop local artisans. I was super excited when I got in but to my surprise a lot of the items were very expensive. I'm use to paying more for local items being handmade but some of these items were way over priced. We didn't eat here. However, I have heard it was good.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a perfect place for us to stop during our Thanksgiving drive back home through West Virginia . It was time for lunch (late ~2pm) and we wanted to stretch the legs too. Honey who was driving had seen billboards of Tamarack, Arts and Crafts. When we pulled into the road leading up to the Center, it was quite a nice, inviting roadway. The large parking lots were clearly made to anticipate travelers of all types of vehicles, including RVs and Bus. This makes sense if and when their artists may be bringing their works of art. We were hungry and pleasantly surprised to find it not being a standard food court, but a cross between a cafeteria and diner in terms of seeing the menu posted on the wall while you wait in line to order. Since my husband has several food allergies, we have to check what options. I remember him being pleased to find a hot entree he could order, and there were options for sides. I ordered the chicken pot pie and was extremely pleased. It was very delicious and also large in size. I even had our teenage son try some, and he actually finished off the rest of it. He ordered pizza. Though you carried your own order to the cashier and then found a seat from the tables right adjacent to the area, they had employees that went by the dining area and took empty trays, finished plates, etc. Place was kept clean. It was wonderful to walk through the rest of the center. So many beautiful art and products. These ranged from glasswork to wooden instruments. Painting, sculptures, crafts, wooden lazy susan/cutting boards, even shoes - fiber, knitted shawls, stain glass, etc. Too many to list but all quite wonderful. What a great way to stretch your legs. I had posted photos of what I had seen and recommended others passing through WV to stop by. The same is true for anyone else!
google avatar

Dawn R.

Yelp
This is really nice leg stretch/pee break spot. There is a full kitchen for food and so many local artisans selling their unique items. There is a glass blower and woodworking couple on site. The best part is they are dog friendly and welcomed our well behaved dog.
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
Stopped to stretch our legs and get something to eat. Great food, amazing artisans, for unique souvenirs and gifts you can find it here!
google avatar

Cathy E.

Yelp
We love to pull off at Tamarack when traveling through this area. It is a nice rest stop and there are so many beautiful crafts to see while stretching your feet. The gift shop makes a circle and you end up where you began. They have blenko glass, woodworking, pottery, Paintings, and all kind of crafts and art from many West Virginia artists.
