The Best Restaurants in Woolwich and Plumstead, South East London | Eater London

"Following the success of a mobile food business, the team behind Tamar’s Restaurant & Bar chose Woolwich as the location for the restaurant’s permanent site, based on the area’s rich African culture. Celebrating West African cuisine, the restaurant serves a collection of broadly Nigerian dishes with other influences also thrown in, including Gambian/Senegalese cheb yacine, also known as “white jollof.” Highlights from the lengthy menu include the likes of pepper soup made with uziza leaves; asun featuring goat meat that’s chopped into bite-sized pieces and ferociously spiced (as it should be); whole grilled tilapia with chilli sauce; and isi ewu, a traditional Igbo specialty of slow-braised goat head garnished with thick rings of raw white onion." - Jonathan Hatchman

I felt like I was back in Lagos, good malt, great tasting of food and selection, nice music and ambience and kind service. As an American visiting London and needing my kick of Nigerian food, this was very much worth it!

Was craving some Nigerian food, I was blessed with the most delicious Jellof, portions were good, service was absolutely amazing, I'll definitely be back again soon.

I was craving Amala so I ordered for Amala and ego riro at Tamar's restaurant. It was my first time. I enjoyed the meal which came with a variety of protein in the soup. The owner of the restaurant is jovial and welcoming. I even got free puff puff(which was also nice)as a first timer

We were in Woolwich staying near this restaurant and decided to have lunch here. The jollof rice was super tasty and well seasoned with my preferred consistency. It was served with slices of cucumber and tomatoes, which we absolutely enjoyed. However, the meatpie we were served was the worst we have ever had. They were wet and soggy on the inside and soaked through to the bottom surfaces of their crusts. None of my children could eat them. One even got nauseous just from taking a bite. And meatpies are their favourite snacks. We thought they might have been microwaved! So Tamar's chef need to do better with their pastries! The server was non-committal when asked about any detail. He says it depends on the chef

This is a nice African eatery tucked right behind Woolich Arsenal Station. They serve good nigerian food that makes you feel like you did the cooking yourself. Very nice and simple surroundings. Will definitely visit again.

Good value, and really nice staff. Asun is definitely the best lamb dish I’ve ever eaten before. All the dishes are really good, would like to try different menu next time.

The jollof is hard and tasteless. They serve the food half hot half cold on the plate. Service is non-existent. No idea why they have so many high ratings, my cousin went here and had the same experience. I want to support small businesses but their attitude is on par with their food. Also very inauthentic. If I were Nigerian I would not claim this place at all.

I specifically told the staff I don’t eat meat on Fridays because of lent.yet my ogbona soup came with cow skin( ponmo).that is meat . This shows a lack of respect and attention to dietary and religious instructions . If a customer say “no meat”, that means no meat in any form.Do better . Staff need to listen more carefully and respect dietary restrictions especially when they’re tied to faith . Totally unacceptable. When the menu stated vegetarian.
